Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZnO microspheres decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal route. The hierarchical ZnO superstructure was constructed of interconnected nanoplates with numerous voids. Photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements demonstrated that the main defects were oxygen vacancies (V(O)(•)) with minor interstitial oxygen (O(i)(-)) in the hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres. The as-prepared hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres and the AuNPs used to decorate them were examined for their photocatalytic degradation ability and as gas sensors. The photodegradation results demonstrated that the degradation rate constant on rhodamine B for undecorated ZnO microspheres was 0.43 min(-1), which increased to 1.76 min(-1) for AuNP-decorated ZnO microspheres. The AuNP-functionalized ZnO microspheres displayed superior sensing properties, with a 3-fold enhancement in their gas response to 1 ppb of dibutyl phthalate.

Abstract:A self-assembly method is demonstrated to link nanoparticles into nanostructure of nanochain or nanosphere. Gold nanoparticles were covered with capping molecules by forming Au–S bonds with thiol group at one terminate. Another terminating group, carboxylic acid, showed strong complex interaction with inorganic linker Zr4+ to form covalent complex bond. The different nanostructures were obtained by moving a balance between two opposite interactions, the linking interaction of Zr4+ and the electrostatic repulsive interaction of net surface charge. When the capping molecule with different chain length was used, the linked nanochain feature exhibited a tunable interdistance between the neighboring nanoparticles.

Abstract:Growth and assembly of ZnO nanosheets into hollow microsphere are performed using PEG 200 as directing agent. FESEM images show that the average width of these assemblied ZnO nanosheets is around ∼250nm, the length is about 500–800nm and the thickness is about 25nm, the diameter of ZnO-assembled microsphere is about 2–4μm. Study shows that microsphere of ZnO nanosheets have a centre cavity, these microsphere assemblied ZnO nanosheets have a wide visible yellow emission at 567cm−1, confocal laser microscopy of an individual ZnO nanosheets assemblied microsphere also show the intense yellow light emission. The oriented attachment of ∼5nm ZnO nanoparticle building blocks eventually form the ZnO nanosheets. The most plausible dissociation–deposition mechanism that directs the formation of microspheric assembly of ZnO nanosheets is also proposed.

Abstract:Self-assembled zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures consisting of nanorods were synthesized at low temperature by means of a one-step hydrothermal method using a mixture of hexamethylenetetramine, zinc nitrate [Zn(NO3)2·6H2O], and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Freestanding single-crystalline ZnO nanorods with polar surfaces on the sharp ends are congregated by the long-range electrostatic force resulting in the formation of ordered nanorod-based structures. The weak Van der Waals interaction causes random aggregation of some tiny nanostructures on the surfaces of the ordered nanostructures. As a result, sphere-like superstructures revealed by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are formed due to energy minimization. In addition, some interesting Raman and photoluminescence properties of the composite ZnO nanorod structures are also discussed in detail. Our results are beneficial to a better understanding of the formation mechanism of some ZnO superstructures.

Abstract:Uniform Co spherical assemblies were prepared via a facile hydrothermal reduction approach in the presence of surfatctants with a yield of 98%. The assembled nanostructures were composed of ordered nanoplatelets with a thickness of similar to 20 nm, as characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM). This material exhibits ferromagnetic characteristics and has a high surface area, showing potential applications for catalysts and other related nanodevices.

Abstract:Self-assembly of nanoparticles is one of the most appealing fields in nanoscience. In the present article, we demonstrate solvent-directed and anion-modulated self-assemblies of ZnO recrystallized from layered basic zinc acetate nanoflakes by heat treatment in liquid media. Diverse controllable ZnO patterns, including nanodots, nanodisks, twinned mesocrystals, mesoporous nanospheres, unprecedented triangular nanoprisms and porous nanosheets, have been achieved from the same precursor, indicating a fascinating platform for studies of self-assembly. It is confirmed that polar protic solvents such as water, alcohol and methanol not only provide liquid media to disperse the precursor nanoflakes but also force their decomposition under mild conditions without basic additives and direct self-assemblies of the resulting ZnO. Both the physicochemical property and the structure of the solvent play important roles. Due to the anion exchange reactions of zinc hydroxide salts and face-selective electrostatic interactions between the added anions and wurtzite ZnO, the conversion and self-assembly process can be effectively modulated by the addition of anions. When the affinity of added anions to the zinc hydroxide layers is weak, the conversion process will be slackened and the preferential assembly direction of ZnO will be modified. However, when the affinity is strong, other stable zinc hydroxide salts instead of ZnO will be obtained. Our findings give new insights into the solid-phase transformation and assembly from the precursor nanoflakes to ZnO. In addition, the outstanding light scattering feature of the resulting ZnO mesocrystals confers application significance on them.

Abstract:A simple hydrothermal route was developed to synthesize CuO three-dimensional (3 D) hierarchical microspheres with average diameter of about 3 mu m. The formation of CuO hierarchical microspheres involves in two stages: tiny nanoplates attached side by side first constitute 2 D nanosheets via an orientation attachment growth mode. Then as-formed sheets assemble orderly and align radially from the center through a layer-by-layer growth style so as to form well-fined microspheres with a multilayered structure. A systematic investigation was carried out to understand the factors influencing the CuO morphology. The quantity of PEG played crucial roles in the formation of CuO hierarchical structures. The possible growth mechanism was identified to explain the formation of CuO architectures herein.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel one-step method to synthesize nano/micron-sized ZnO spheres assembled from the aggregation of nano-particles. It was observed that ZnO spheres with controllable diameter were obtained when various volume ratios of triethanolamine (TEA) to H2O were used. Increasing the volume ratio of TEA to H2O could favor the formation of densely packed ZnO spheres. The UV–vis absorption spectra show that the absorption peak red-shifts with the increasing average diameter of the spheres. On the basis of the experimental results, we proposed a possible mechanism to elucidate the formation of ZnO spheres.

Abstract:Hydrangea-like hollow microspherical ZnO has been synthesized via a transformation from layered basic zinc acetate (LBZA) and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Investigation of the early stages of the crystal growth revealed a non-classic growth mechanism. With increasing reaction time, (1) amorphous spherical aggregates formed initially, followed by (2) surface multiple nucleation, (3) crystallization into LBZA nanosheets which are vertical to the microspheres' surface, (4) surface condensation leading to the formation of hollow microspheres, (5) extension of the crystallization both inwards and outwards, and (6) transformation to zinc oxide during annealing in air. The detailed formation mechanism of the hydrangea-like microspheres, consisting of thin (∼5.4 nm) LBZA nanosheets, is proposed. The hydrangea-like ZnO exhibited superior photocatalytic performance in dye degradation due to its unique construction and high specific surface area. This work may shed light on crystal engineering of porous microspheres, hollow crystals and thin nanosheets of other materials.

Abstract:Novel superstructures of multilayered ZnO nanosheets with hierarchically porous structures are successfully synthesized from a hydrothermal preparation and thermal decomposition of a layered precursor of zinc hydroxide carbonate (denoted as ZnHC). Nanosheet-based ZnHC microspheres are self-assembled by the hydrothermal process by using zinc nitrate hexahydrate and urea as the starting materials. The corresponding microspheric organizations of multilayered ZnO nanosheets with hierarchically porous structures are obtained by the thermal decomposition ZnHC precursor at 573 K. SEM images show that the average diameter of ZnO assembled microspheres is about 15 μm, and the length of a ZnO nanosheet building block which is made up of thin mutilayered sheets is around ∼7 μm. Studies also show well-crystallized pores with hierarchically distributed pore sizes are embedded in the multilayered ZnO nanosheets building blocks. A plausible dissociation-deposition mechanism using in situ formed Zn(OH)2 nuclei as the "sacrificial" templates for the microsphere assembly is also proposed.

Abstract:A simple approach to control the self-assembly of ZnS nanocrystals into well-defined, uniform, three-dimensional, micrometer-scale, solid ellipsoidal structures with rattle-type, multishelled, and hollow architectures is presented. There is no surfactant or small molecule to assist the self-assembly of the nanocrystals. A possible mechanism of the controlled self-assembly is proposed. The growth process can be divided into two stages: 1) the formation of ellipsoidal architectures via oriented aggregation, the growth kinetics of which is primarily attributed to the charge-charge, charge-dipole, and dipole-dipole interactions of preformed ZnS nanocrystals; and 2) Ostwald ripening, which results in multishelled, rattle-type, and hollow structures. This self-assembly concept is also applicable to other metal sulfides.

Abstract:ZnO ellipsoid-like structures assembled by ZnO nanrods were fabricated from common ZnO whiskers by autoclave tests and pyrolysis integrated method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies reveal ZnO ellipsoidal structures are single-crystals and formed from direct "oriented attachment" of nanorods. Raman and room temperature photoluminescence spectra are also discussed.

Abstract:ZnO 3D microstructures with nano-multipod have been self-assembly synthesized on a post-annealed Ag-coated silicon substrate by sintering the mixture of ZnO and graphite powders in Ar flow. SEM images show that the microstructure has a spherical core and multiple radial nanorods grown around its outside with diameter of about 1-2 mu m and 50-200 nm, respectively. XRD investigation shows the ZnO multipods are of a wurtzite structure. The room temperature photoluminescence spectrum of the microstructures reveals a strong broad green emission band at 530 nm. It is found that the post-deposition annealing treatment of the Ag thin film is a key factor to control the formation of ZnO 3D microstructures. Abstract:Employing NH4BF4 as a fluoride source, novel hierarchical cake-like ZnO microstructures have been fabricated by a simple, template-free, environmentally-friendly DMF (N, N-dimethylformamide)-mediated solvothermal route. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and nitrogen adsorptiondesorption and PL. The SEM and TEM results indicated that the hierarchical cake-like ZnO were assembled from numerous tiny nanoplates. DMF acted as solvent and structure-directing agent to guide the formation of ZnO nuclei and the self-assembled preferential growth from smaller building units (nanoplates) to larger cake-like ZnO microstructures. The as-prepared samples, ZnO or ZnOHF could be regulated by altering the two major reaction parameters (the amount of DMF and fluoride source). Timedependent morphological evolution results revealed that self-assembly and Ostwald ripening were the main formation mechanism for the hierarchical ZnO microstructure. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared ZnO samples was evaluated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV light irradiation. Such hierarchical cake-like ZnO microstructures showed an excellent photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the cake-like ZnO microstructures were chemically stable, and the efficiency remained almost the same after being recycled five times.
Self-Organized Zno Microcombs With Cuboid Nanobranches By Simple Thermal Evaporation

Abstract:Microscale wide and millimeters long comblike ZnO single crystals with well-aligned cuboid nanobranches were fabricated using a double-tube simple thermal evaporation method without the presence of a catalyst at 950 degrees C. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra revealed that the as-grown products had a wurtzite crystal structure. The morphology and microstructure analyses of ZnO microcombs were performed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The ZnO microcombs were about 1-3 millimeters in length, with branching rods about 40 mu m in length and 500-800 nm in width. Selected area electron diffraction confirmed that the branching rods and ribbon stems grew along the [0001] and [01 (1) over bar0] in each direction, respectively. Photoluminescence measurement of the microcombs showed a weak UV emission band and a broad yellow-green emission band centered at 395 and 530 nm, respectively. A possible growth mechanism based on different preferred growth orientations of ribbon stems and branching rods was also proposed.
Hydrogen Bonding Stabilized Self-Assembly of Inorganic Nanoparticles: Mechanism and Collective Properties.

Abstract:Developing a simple and efficient method to organize nanoscale building blocks into ordered superstructures, understanding the mechanism for self-assembly and revealing the essential collective properties are crucial steps toward the practical use of nanostructures in nanotechnology-based applications. In this study, we showed that the high-yield formation of ZnO nanoparticle chains with micrometer length can be readily achieved by the variation of solvents from methanol to water. Spectroscopic studies confirmed the solvent effect on the surface properties of ZnO nanoparticles, which were found to be critical for the formation of anisotropic assemblies. Quantum mechanical calculations and all atom molecular dynamic simulations indicated the contribution of hydrogen bonding for stabilizing the structure in water. Dissipative particle dynamics further revealed the importance of solvent-nanoparticle interactions for promoting one-dimensional self-assembly. The branching of chains was found upon aging, resulting in the size increase of the ensembles and network formation. Steady-state and time-resolved luminescent spectroscopes, which probed the variation of defect-related emission, revealed stronger Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between nanoparticles when the chain networks were formed. The high efficiency of FRET quenching can be ascribed to the presence of multiple energy transfer channels, as well as the short internanoparticle distances and the dipole alignment.
Mechanistic Investigations of PEG-Directed Assembly of One-Dimensional ZnO Nanostructures

Abstract:Mechanistic investigation on spherical assembly of the unique one-dimensional ZnO nanorods, solid nanocones, or hollow prisms with the closed -c end, directed by poly ethylene glycol (PEG) with different molecular weights, has been carried out using spectroscopic methods. The single crystalline ZnO nanoprisms, hollow along the c axis but closed at the -c end, aggregate to urchin-type globules in the microscale when PEG 2000 is used as directing reagent, while spherical aggregates of single crystalline ZnO nanocones are obtained under the direction of PEG 200. Studies reveal that both the PEG molecules aggregate to globules by interacting with zinc species in suitable solvents and englobe the zinc species. By the short time of ultrasonic pretreatment on the solution, a kind of flagellum structure is induced around the globules, in long tubular shapes for PEG 2000 but as shorter wedges for PEG 200. The globules with flagellums are templates for the assembly of the ZnO nanotubes or ZnO nanocones in the hydrothermal treatment. The tiny ZnO crystallites, produced in the hydrothermal process, stack to the templates and amalgamate to single crystalline nanotubes or nanocones, similar to the oriented attachment mechanism. The PEG 2000 template is included in the ZnO cavity of nanotubes, while PEG 200 is excluded from the ZnO nanocones due to the different intertwist properties between the two PEG molecules. Both the urchin-type assemblies, possessing the same external crystalline plane, compose a isotropic powder and emit very strong yellow light, centered at approximately 2.1 eV, under the excitation of the He-Cd laser at 325 nm, which has been correlated to the specific crystal plane. The special powders will be easily coated onto any type of surface for the decoration of a large area of surfaces for future applications.

Abstract:ZnO nanodisk arrays have been prepared by utilizing cooperative surface assembly of surfactants and inorganic species at the solid–liquid interfaces under the mild condition. Photoluminescence measurement showed that the obtained ZnO nanodisk arrays exhibit new optical property comparing to the previous results of diverse ZnO nanostructures. Such nanostructures are expected to find more applications employing their optical and electrical properties.
