Study on utilization of mine concentrated brine by bipolar membrane electrodialysis

Abstract:Concentrated brine is mine water that has been desalted and concentrated, and widely exists in coal mine wastewater treatment projects, effective treatment is the key to achieving zero discharge. The three-septum bipolar membrane electrodialysis was used to prepare hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide from secondary reverse osmosis concentrated brine with an external direct electric field. In this process, H + and OH - could be hydrolyzed from water on the bipolar membrane, and salt ions passed through the exchange membrane respectively. We investigated the effects of membrane type, current intensity, pretreatment, and operation mode on the concentration of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, and assessed the economic performance of the device. The experiment results show that the salt ion content and electron current are the main factors of membrane voltage, product concentration, and current efficiency. Organic components, soluble silica in secondary reverse osmosis concentrated brine can be removed with chlorine strong base anion exchange resin, while the sulfate radical turn into chloridion. The acid-alkali yield of Fumasep fkb pk130/Fumasep fab pk130/Fumasep fbm pk is significantly lower than that of JQ-C81/JQ-A81/JQ-AC91 under the same conditions. With the batch mode, the current intensity is 4 A, and the mass fraction of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide products reaches 4.7% and 5.7% respectively after the domestic combined membrane electrodialysis for 4 h, which can be used in pH adjustment and chemical cleaning process. The experimental results show that bipolar membrane electrodialysis realizes the salt resource utilization based on desalting secondary reverse osmosis mine concentrated brine and recycling desalting water, which has good economic benefits. The operating cost of the process is 159.03 yuan/t, while the profit of the hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide products is 177.42 yuan/t. It provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for the applied research of bipolar membrane electrodialysis for the treatment of secondary reverse osmosis mine brine.
