Abstract:The degree of homogeneity determines directly the performance-related properties and service life of asphalt pavements, and influences the overall life cycle cost of pavement preservation. Homogeneity has been an index of asphalt pavement Quality Assurance (QA) / Quality Control (QC). At present the effect of homogeneity on the mechanical response of pavements has been investigated lesser, even homogeneity is paid much attention in the field. The purpose of this research is to study the relation of homogeneity and mechanical response of asphalt pavements. The basic assumptions were introduced in brief. The pavement structural models and structural parameters were also given. Finally based on multilayered elastic analysis software program BISAR, the relationship between homogeneity and the mechanical response of asphalt pavements was investigated via computing the stress, strain and displacement at the bottom of each structural layer. Results show that homogeneity influences the mechanical response of asphalt pavements; under the same vehicle load and natural environmental factors the displacement is more in flexible base asphalt pavement than in semi-rigid base asphalt pavement, and the tensile strain is more at the flexible base bottom than at the semi-rigid base bottom; the tensile stress almost always appears at the asphalt surface and the base bottom, and usually is more at the semi-rigid base asphalt surface than at the flexible base asphalt surface.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:Homogeneity is one of the most important factors affecting the performance-related properties of asphalt mixtures. Pavement condition surveys have shown various patterns of distresses due to segregation and other types of non-uniformity. Most of presently used test methods have limitations to evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity and their test results usually have flaws. The main objective of this research is to investigate the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity using digital image processing, which includes three aspects: (1) to develop the index of homogeneity, (2) to categorize the index of homogeneity, and (3) to examine the main influence factors of the index of homogeneity. By the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient, a method for evaluating homogeneity of a cross section in asphalt mixtures was described in detail, and a method for evaluating the whole homogeneity was also presented. The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.

Abstract:To study the methods of the low-noise asphalt pavement mixture mix design,the paper design used gradation and optimum asphalt content as the two main design specifications of low-noise asphalt pavement mixture design.The search used the table as aggregate grading design and determined the best asphalt content by comparative analysis of theoretical calculations,flow test and asphalt fell tests.The results showed that:Mixture of air voids resulted in using the table had a good linear correlation with target air void.The way of determining the best asphalt content using flow test is more consistent with actual project and easy to spread.

Abstract:Excavation method and construction control of high slope under highway operating condition is still a big challenge, which lacks systemic research so far. The paper takes a typical slope of Hang-Jin-Qu highway as an illustrative example. Rational broaden ways are discussed based on technical and economic comparison. A scheme that first anchoring upper slope and then excavating lower slope is determined based on engineering geological analysis and slope stability evaluation. The anchoring and excavation parameters are optimized using qualitative and quantitative analysis. Monitoring data indicates that the proposed broaden scheme and corresponding reinforcement measures are feasible. The proposed broaden idea and scheme of high slope provide references for similar project.

Abstract:Conventional human-involved maintenance methods for asphalt pavement pose significant challenges when applied to high-traffic road sections, often leading to congestion and safety risks, as well as reduced maintenance efficiency. In recent years, explorations into unmanned construction technology for newly constructed expressways have yielded beneficial and encouraging results. However, its application in road maintenance in more complex environments still needs to be expanded. In this study, an intelligent unmanned maintenance technology for asphalt pavement was applied to the Lilong Highway in Zhejiang Province, China, and the compactability, thickness, surface smoothness, permeability coefficient, and constructure depth of maintenance road sections were measured. Then, based on fuzzy comprehensive mathematics and the analytic hierarchy process, a comprehensive evaluation was performed on the intelligent unmanned maintenance technology, considering the aspects of road quality, safety, application, and socio-economic benefits. The results show that the road quality of intelligent unmanned maintenance technology can meet the road specification requirements. In addition, the membership degree of unmanned maintenance technology in the excellent grade is the highest, reaching 0.805, and the quantified value for the overall evaluation of the application effectiveness of unmanned maintenance technology is 92.10. This means that the final comprehensive evaluation result of unmanned maintenance technology is rated as excellent. The research findings provide decision-makers with valuable insights into the unmanned automation maintenance challenges faced by asphalt pavement, enabling them to implement appropriate measures to elevate the maintenance standards of road transportation.

The available methods for evaluating asphalt mixture homogeneity, or segregation were reviewed. The digital image processing was concisely introduced. The classification of the index of homogeneity was listed and discussed. In the end, the main influence factors of the index of homogeneity were quantitatively analyzed. The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity which is determined by the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number, the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the reliability of the control index APPDI under different base asphalt pavement structures, the research on the correlation analysis between the damage of asphalt pavement and the material strength under high temperature conditions is carried out. Relying on the Guangle Expressway as the project, the distribution of APPDI in the pavement structure was analyzed, and the parameters of the asphalt pavement material were optimized by adjusting the cohesion c and tensile strength ?t of the pavement material, and compared with the results of the Marshall test to determine the optimal parameters of the pavement material. Safety and rationality, comprehensive experimental analysis: It is suggested that the design parameters that should be used in pavement design are cohesion of 0.1630MPa, elastic modulus of 681.41MPa, and Poisson's ratio of 0.35. This research can provide a new idea for the design of structural materials for asphalt pavement.

Abstract:The Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu expressway is the first highway which is built by using World Bank loan in china. With the influence of service life increasing and traffic growing, the diseases appear such as rut, crack and poor flatness, so the use performance of the highway obviously degrades. Pavement overhaul effectively reduces the appearing of pavement diseases and prolongs the service life of the road. This paper conducts a detailed research on the engineering management and construction quality control of the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu expressway overhaul which has strong reference significance on highway overhaul.

Abstract:Significant dynamic deformations during the operation of kilometer‐span high‐speed railway bridges adversely affect track maintenance. This paper proposes a three‐stage smoothness control method based on a comprehensive analysis of track alignment characteristics to address this issue. In the method, historical measured data are grouped into multicategories, and reference alignments for each category are reconstructed. Then, the reference alignment category to which the track to be adjusted belongs is accurately matched. Finally, a novel smoothness optimization algorithm is designed to use the 60 m chord as the optimization unit, and the 10 m and 30 m combined chords within the unit constrain the midchord offset and vector distance difference. The proposed method was applied to formulate the maintenance scheme for the Shanghai–Suzhou–Nantong Yangtze River Bridge. The result indicates that the track smoothness improved by more than 79.7%, and the high‐speed train operational performance improved by over 64.3%, effectively enhancing the maintenance quality.

Abstract:Mountain highways are an important part of road traffic in many countries, but accidents occurr frequently due to complex environmental conditions and driving speeds. Therefore, long-term skid resistance evaluation and driving safety warnings of mountain highways is of great significance. In this study, three types of pavement were studied, namely the Asphalt Concrete (AC-13), the Open-graded Friction Course (OGFC-13), and Semi-flexible Pavement (SFP). Based on a novel accelerated polishing equipment independently invented by Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), the dynamic friction coefficient deterioration of the pavement was analyzed under the coupling influence of different speeds, pavement type, and service life. The mountain highway safety evaluation system was established based on “CarSim” software under the different road slopes and line types. The results show that the SFP has better skid resistance properties than other pavement types. Driving speed should be adjusted in real-time according to different road conditions.

Abstract:Aiming at characteristics and special service conditions of certain engineering of widening expressway,performance experiments of types of asphalt mixture for trial sections are carried out.The results indicate that types of asphalt mixture can be further optimized.Based on above research,correctional AC-16 and AC-20 gradation are recommended,the gradations are more excellent than that of trail sections by experiments and economical analyses.In the terms of the overlay time after widening engineering,pavement structure of the widening engineering is recommended.

Abstract:The actual lifetimes of many highways are lower than that expected based on the initial pavement design, which brings increasingly prohibitive costs of pavement maintenance and repair. Although many works have been done, the real service lifetimes are still disappointing, and the researchers are also trying their best to increase the projects’ life span. In this study, to comprehensively predict the durability and lifetime of newly designed asphalt mixture structures, an asphalt pavement project consisting of three hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures were evaluated. The mixtures were constructed in the pavement project of the Weiwu expressway in Gansu Province. Pavement properties of the asphalt mixtures, rutting and temperature fatigue factors of the dynamic modulus are discussed. The fatigue resistance is supposed to improve on increasing the vehicles’ speed below the freezing point, which may be more suitable for applications in expressways. Meanwhile, the lifetime is measured according to the number of fatigue axle loads calculated, which were corrected between the specimens in the lab and the field core samples. Durability analysis prediction can be obtained based on the fatigue lifetime predictive model accordingly, which can provide more information about the fatigue lifetime and the rehabilitation planning of existing pavements in the future accordingly.

Abstract:The evaluation system of ride comfort has been established by taking the independent suspension vehicle models with ten DOFs as analytical basic and basing on 'ISO2631-1: 1997 (E) Mechanical vibration and shock evaluation of human exposure to whole-body vibration'; the variable rules of Fute's ride comfort along with vehicle parameters, velocity and pavement roughness have been analyzed in stated statistical characteristics range of pavement roughness; the conclusions as follow have been gained: that is pavement roughness and velocity influence the ride comfort markedly; the more wide the difference between the pavement roughness coefficients of the two races is, the more greatly it influences ride comfort; the damping system of vehicle influences the ride comfort markedly; improving the parameters of suspension system can reach the aim of improving ride comfort as improving pavement roughness do.

Abstract:The acceleration of urbanization has promoted the increase in the number of urban highway projects, resulting in an increase of emphasis on the quality of urban highway projects. The quality and safety of highway construction directly affects the driving comfort, safety, and service life after it is put into operation. Among them, asphalt pavement is an important structure in highway construction, and it is also a key link that directly affects the construction quality. In order to ensure the quality of construction, it is necessary to strengthen on-site testing during the construction process to discover problems in time, and to ensure that the construction is up to standard. This paper mainly presents an analysis on the necessity and application of on-site quality inspection technology for asphalt pavement construction of highway engineering, and outlines measures to improve highway engineering construction testing technology.
