Abstract:This paper uses the background field method to calculate one-loop divergent corrections to the gauge field propa- gators in noncommutative U（1） gauge theory with scalar fields. It shows that for a massless scalar field, the gauge field propagators are renormalizable to θ 2 -order, but for a massive scalar field they are renormalizable only to θ-order.

Abstract:The transverse axial vector and vector anomalies in four-dimensional U(1) gauge theories studied in [Phys. Lett. B 507 (2001) 351] is reexamined by means of perturbative method. The absence of transverse anomalies for both axial vector and vector current is verified. We also show that the Pauli–Villars regularization and dimensional regularization gives the same result on the transverse anomaly of both axial vector and vector current.
Noninvertible anomalies in $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories

Abstract:We study $4$-dimensional $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories with a single massless Dirac fermion in the $2$-index symmetric/antisymmetric representations and show that they are endowed with a noninvertible $0$-form $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ chiral symmetry along with a $1$-form $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ center symmetry. By using the Hamiltonian formalism and putting the theory on a spatial three-torus $\mathbb T^3$, we construct the non-unitary gauge invariant operator corresponding to $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and find that it acts nontrivially in sectors of the Hilbert space characterized by selected magnetic fluxes. When we subject $\mathbb T^3$ to $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ twists, for $N$ even, in selected magnetic flux sectors, the algebra of $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ fails to commute by a $\mathbb Z_2$ phase. We interpret this noncommutativity as a mixed anomaly between the noninvertible and the $1$-form symmetries. The anomaly implies that all states in the torus Hilbert space with the selected magnetic fluxes exhibit a two-fold degeneracy for arbitrary $\mathbb T^3$ size. The degenerate states are labeled by discrete electric fluxes and are characterized by nonzero expectation values of condensates. In an Appendix, we also discuss how to construct the corresponding noninvertible defect via the ``half-space gauging'' of a discrete one-form magnetic symmetry.

ABJ anomaly as a U(1) symmetry and Noether's theorem

Abstract:The Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly determines the violation of chiral symmetry when massless fermions are coupled to an abelian gauge field. In its seminal paper, Adler noticed that a modified chiral U(1) symmetry could still be defined, at the expense of being generated by a non-gauge-invariant conserved current. We show this internal U(1) symmetry has the special feature that it transforms the Haag duality violating sectors (or non local operator classes). This provides a simple unifying perspective on the origin of anomaly quantization, anomaly matching, applicability of Goldstone theorem, and the absence of a Noether current. We comment on recent literature where this symmetry is considered to be either absent or non-invertible. We end by recalling the DHR reconstruction theorem, which states 0-form symmetries cannot be non-invertible for d>2, and argue for a higher form-symmetry reconstruction theorem.

Abstract:Based on the method of computing the curl of vector, axial-vector and the tensor current operator equations, the possible quantum anomaly for the transverse Ward-Takahashi relations in QED(3) and QED(2) theories is studied. The absence of transverse anomalies for both axial-vector current in QED(2) theory and vector (tensor) current in QED(3) theory are verified respectively. Further, it is found that when we ignore the contribution of the three integral-term involving the vertex function in the Wilson line, we can get a set of closed coupled integral Dyson-Schwinger equations in QED(3). Abstract:Anomalies of global symmetry provide powerful tool to constrain the dynamics of quantum systems, such as anomaly matching in the renormalization group flow and obstruction to symmetric mass generation. In this note we compute the anomalies in 2+1d time-reversal symmetric gauge theories with massless fermions in the fundamental and rank-two tensor representations, where the gauge groups are SU( N ), SO( N ), Sp( N ), U(1). The fermion parity is part of the gauge group and the theories are bosonic. The time-reversal symmetry satisfies T 2 = 1 or T 2 = where is an internal magnetic symmetry. We show that some of the bosonic gauge theories have time-reversal anomaly with c − ≠ 0 mod 8 that is absent in fermionic systems. The anomalies of the gauge theories can be nontrivial even when the number of Majorana fermions is a multiple of 16 and ν = 0.

The UV and IR Origin of Nonabelian Chiral Gauge Anomalies on Noncommutative Minkowski Space-time

Abstract:We discuss both the UV and IR origin of the one-loop triangle gauge anomalies for noncommutative nonabelian chiral gauge theories with fundamental, adjoint and bi-fundamental fermions for U(N) groups. We find that gauge anomalies only come from planar triangle diagrams, the non-planar triangle contributions giving rise to no breaking of the Ward identies. Generally speaking, theories with fundamental and bi-fundamental chiral matter are anomalous. Theories with only adjoint chiral fermions are anomaly free.

Abstract:We present a new non-perturbative 't Hooft anomaly afflicting a quantum field theory with symmetry group G = U(1) × Z 2 in four dimensions. We use the Adams spectral sequence to compute that the bordism group ( BG ), which classifies anomalies that remain when perturbative anomalies cancel, is Z 4 . By constructing a mapping torus and evaluating the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer η -invariant, we show that the mod 4 anomaly is generated by a pair of Weyl fermions that are vector-like under U(1), but with only one component charged under Z 2 . We construct a simple microscopic field theory that realises the anomaly, before investigating its impact in the hydrodynamic limit. We find that the anomaly dictates transport phenomena in the U(1) current and energy-momentum tensor akin to the chiral vortical and magnetic effects (even though the perturbative anomalies here vanish), but with the conductivities being fractionally quantised in units of a quarter, reflecting the mod 4 nature of the bordism group. Along the way, we compute the (relevant) bordism groups ( B Z 2 × B U(1)) and ( B U(1)) in all degrees d = 0 through 5.

On the anomaly interpretation of amplitudes in self-dual Yang-Mills and gravity

Abstract:We investigate the integrability anomalies arising in the self-dual sectors of gravity and Yang-Mills theory, focusing on their connection to both the chiral anomaly and the trace anomaly. The anomalies in the self-dual sectors generate the one-loop all-plus amplitudes of gravitons and gluons, and have recently been studied via twistor constructions. On the one hand, we show how they can be interpreted as an anomaly of the chiral U(1) electric-magnetic-type duality in the self-dual sectors. We also note the similarity, for the usual fermionic chiral anomaly, between the 4D setting of self-dual Yang-Mills and the 2D setting of the Schwinger model. On the other hand, the anomalies in the self-dual theories also resemble the trace anomaly, sharing the same type of non-local effective action. We highlight the role of a Weyl-covariant fourth-order differential operator familiar from the trace anomaly literature, which (i) explains the conformal properties of the one-loop amplitudes, and (ii) indicates how this story may be extended to non-trivial spacetime backgrounds, e.g. with a cosmological constant. Moving beyond the self-dual sectors, and focusing on the gravity case, we comment on an intriguing connection to the two-loop ultraviolet divergence of pure gravity, whereby cancelling the anomaly at one-loop eliminates the two-loop divergence for the simplest helicity amplitudes.

Discrete Gauge Anomalies and Instantons

Abstract:We revisit anomalous phases related to large gauge transformations, such as the Witten anomaly. The latter, known to plague $d=4$ $Sp(k)$ theories, is well-understood in terms of $\pi_4(Sp(k))=\mathbb{Z}_2$, but it also has an oblique relation to the instantons, labeled by $\pi_3(G)=\mathbb{Z}$, via the fermion zero mode counting. We revisit this relation and point out how $SU(N)$ theories escape an anomalous sign of the latter type, only thanks to the perturbative anomaly cancelation condition that restricts the chiral fermion spectrum. This leads to the question of what happens if the latter, more mundane anomaly is canceled by an inflow instead. After raising an open question about fractional D3 probe theories, we explore the simplest bottom-up model of such a kind, due to Witten and Yonekura, from which we find the relevant chiral theories to be free of such a disease despite the unrestricted chiral spectra. We close with a simple but often-overlooked observation about how fermionic zero modes enter physics differently between Euclidean and Lorentzian descriptions and point out a related issue in $d=3$.

On Torsion Contribution to Chiral Anomaly via Nieh-Yan Term

Abstract:In this note we present a solution to the question of whether or not, in the presence of torsion, the topological Nieh-Yan term contributes to chiral anomaly. The integral of Nieh-Yan term is non-zero if topology is non-trivial; the manifold has a boundary or vierbeins have singularities. Noting that singular Nieh-Yan term could be written as a sum of delta functions, we argue that the heat kernel expansion cannot end at finite steps. This leads to a sinusoidal dependence on the Nieh-Yan term and the UV cut-off of the theory (or alternatively the minimum length of spacetime). We show this ill-behaved dependence can be removed if a quantization condition on length scales is applied. It is expected as the Nieh-Yan term can be derived as the difference of two Chern class integrals (i.e. Pontryagin terms). On the other hand, in the presence of a cosmological constant, we find that indeed the Nieh-Yan term contributes to the index with a dimensionful anomaly coefficient that depends on the de Sitter length or equivalently inverse Hubble rate. We find similar result in thermal field theory where the anomaly coefficient depends on temperature. In both examples, the anomaly coefficient depends on IR cut-off of the theory. Without singularities, the Nieh-Yan term can be smoothly rotated away, does not contribute to topological structure and consequently does not contribute to chiral anomaly.

Abstract:A zero-dimensional analogue of Witten's global gauge anomaly is considered. For example, a zero-dimensional reduction of the two-dimensional $\SO(2N)$ Yang-Mills theory with a single Majorana-Weyl fermion in the fundamental representation suffers from this anomaly. Another example is a zero-dimensional reduction of two- and three-dimensional $\SU(2N_c)$ Yang-Mills theories which couple to a single Majorana fermion in the adjoint representation. In this case, any expectation value is either indeterminate or infinite.

Abstract:In this work we propose a way to promote the anomalous axial U(1) transformations to exact non-invertible U(1) symmetries. We discuss the procedure of coupling the non-invertible symmetry to a (dynamical or background) gauge field. We show that as part of the gauging procedure, certain constraints are imposed to make the gauging consistent. The constraints emerge naturally from the form of the non-invertible U(1) conserved current. In the case of dynamical gauging, this results in new type of gauge theories we call non-invertible gauge theories: These are gauge theories with additional constraints that cancel the would-be gauge anomalies. By coupling to background gauge fields, we can discuss 't-Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries. We show in an example that the matching conditions hold but they are realized in an unconventional way. Turning on non-trivial background for the non-invertible gauge field changes the vacuum even when the symmetry is not broken and the background is very weak. The anomalies are then matched by the appearance of solitons in the new vacuum.

Abstract:We devise a general method for obtaining 0-form noninvertible discrete chiral symmetries in 4-dimensional SU( N ) / Z p and SU( N ) × U(1) / Z p gauge theories with matter in arbitrary representations, where Z p is a subgroup of the electric 1-form center symmetry. Our approach involves placing the theory on a three-torus and utilizing the Hamiltonian formalism to construct noninvertible operators by introducing twists compatible with the gauging of Z p . These theories exhibit electric 1-form and magnetic 1-form global symmetries, and their generators play a crucial role in constructing the corresponding Hilbert space. The noninvertible operators are demonstrated to project onto specific Hilbert space sectors characterized by particular magnetic fluxes. Furthermore, when subjected to twists by the electric 1-form global symmetry, these surviving sectors reveal an anomaly between the noninvertible and the 1-form symmetries. We argue that an anomaly implies that certain sectors, characterized by the eigenvalues of the electric symmetry generators, exhibit multi-fold degeneracies. When we couple these theories to axions, infrared axionic noninvertible operators inherit the ultraviolet structure of the theory, including the projective nature of the operators and their anomalies. We discuss various examples of vector and chiral gauge theories that showcase the versatility of our approach.

Abstract:The gauge invariant Wess-Zumino action functional in dimensional space is obtained by properly constructing the manifestly gauge invariant -forms which satisfy the Abelian anomalous Ward identity in dimensional space. Apart from its simplicity, directness, the construction clearly embodies the connections between the gauge invariant Wess-Zumino action functional, chiral anomalies and topology.

Abstract:We propose the general idea that 't Hooft anomalies of generalized global symmetries can be understood in terms of the properties of solitonic defects, which generically are non-topological defects. The defining property of such defects is that they act as sources for background fields of generalized symmetries. 't Hooft anomalies arise when solitonic defects are charged under these generalized symmetries. We illustrate this idea for several kinds of anomalies in various spacetime dimensions. A systematic exploration is performed in 3d for 0-form, 1-form, and 2-group symmetries, whose 't Hooft anomalies are related to two special types of solitonic defects, namely vortex line defects and monopole operators. This analysis is supplemented with detailed computations of such anomalies in a large class of 3d gauge theories. Central to this computation is the determination of the gauge and 0-form charges of a variety of monopole operators: these involve standard gauge monopole operators, but also fractional gauge monopole operators, as well as monopole operators for 0-form symmetries. The charges of these monopole operators mainly receive contributions from Chern-Simons terms and fermions in the matter content. Along the way, we interpret the vanishing of the global gauge and ABJ anomalies, which are anomalies not captured by local anomaly polynomials, as the requirement that gauge monopole operators and mixed monopole operators for 0-form and gauge symmetries have non-fractional integer charges.
