Abstract:Based on the investigation of wild ornamental spermatophyte in Guangzhou,648 wild spermatophyte species were ornamental in Guangzhou,including 136 families and 393 genera.This paper evaluated their ornamental characteristics by AHP,and made suggestions that 109 species had high ornamental value which were devided into 4 types.The native plants such as colored leaves trees,ornamental fruit and flower plants,lianes,ground covers,sciophyte and honey plants had great potential in further exploitation and application in horticulture and Lunar New Year Flower market.Through full development,the human-arbor-shrub landscape harmonious development was promoted in deed.

Abstract:According to the ex-situ conservation means,adaptation,effectiveness etc,the rare and endangered plants under ex-situ conservation in Guilin Botanical Garden are evaluated. The results show that there’s high scientific quality of these plants,more than 96% of the species have been recorded scientifically,75% of them are adapted or constrainedly adapted to habitat of ex-situ area. A few species belong to“conservation collection”including Ginkgo biloba,others are all“collection with conservation value”. Otherwise,species endemic to Guangxi have stronger adaptability than those beyond Guangxi significantly. According to standard of minimum viable population,the ex-situ conservation of 73 rare and endangered plants are effective.
Study on the Relationship Between Plant Diversity and Soil Environmental Factors in Caohai Lakeside Wetland of Guizhou Province

Abstract:The vegetation and soil conditions of wetlands are important sources of nutrients for lake water, and they form the fundamental basis for the ecological services provided by wetlands. In this study, an investigation was conducted on the plant diversity and soil environmental factors in Caohai lakeside wetland. The following results were obtained: a total of 166 species of aquatic plants were found in the protected area, with the highest number of species belonging to hygrophytes. The families with the highest number of plant species were Asterzceae with 26 species and Poaceae with 25 species. There were differences in plant diversity indices among the sampling sites, with the highest Shannon-Wiener index found in the Loulaoshan site, the highest Simpson index found in the Xihai Matou site, and the highest Pielou evenness index found in the Jiangjiawan site. Monte Carlo tests showed that the soil environmental factors significantly influencing the characteristics of wetland plant community diversity were oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) (40.5%, F=23.2, P=0.002), compaction (6.7%, F=4.2, P=0.012), and temperature (5.4%, F=3.6, P=0.022).

Abstract:Background Dai, Hani, and Yao people, in the trans-boundary region between China, Laos, and Vietnam, have gathered plentiful traditional knowledge about wild edible plants during their long history of understanding and using natural resources. The ecologically rich environment and the multi-ethnic integration provide a valuable foundation and driving force for high biodiversity and cultural diversity in this region. However, little study has uncovered this unique and attractive culture to the world. Methods We conducted ethnobotanical survey in 20 villages of Jiangcheng County from 2016 to 2020. Altogether 109 local Dai, Hani, and Yao people were interviewed, and their traditional knowledge about wild edible plants was recorded. Voucher specimens were identified by the authors and deposited in the herbarium of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences (HITBC). The use value was used as a quantitative index to evaluate the consumption frequency and relative importance of the wild edible plants. The Jaccard index was calculated to assess the usage similarity of different areas. The relationship of age and recognized wild edible plants by different ethnic people was performed by R. Results A total of 211 wild edible plants, belonging to 71 families and 151 genera, were recorded. These plants were consumed as wild edible vegetables, seasonal fruits, salads, spices, sour condiments, tonic soups, tea substitutes, liquor brewing, or dyeing materials. The use value (UV), current cultivation, market availability, and the quantitative traditional knowledge inheritance situation of these wild edible plants among different generations, were analyzed. Based on the data from the threatened species list of China's higher plants and the IUCN Red List, the food plant list for Asia Elephant, the Subject Database of China Plant, and the calculated UV score, the top 30 most important wild edible plants were selected for further cultivation in some local villages. Conclusion Traditional knowledge of wild edible plants, owned by Dai, Hani, and Yao people in Jiangcheng County, is rich but at risk of being lost among the young generation. Diversified cultivation of wild edible plants by the local communities could be a solution for the sustainable use of natural resources and to conserve the endangered species in this trans-boundary region.

Abstract:Based on the field survey,the plant diversity of Changzhou Island,Guangzhou was studied.There are a total of 487 vascular plant species belonging to 358 genera,127 families on the island,and the dominating vegetation are secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest and artificial vegetation.The diversity and geographical area of the wild plant on Changzhou Island were analyzed,the results indicated that few families are the dominant components of flora,and tropical elements predominate in the flora but there is a degree influence of temperate elements.Finally,suggestions for the protection of plant diversity were proposed.

Abstract:Fangchenggang is situated in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, renowned for its rich biodiversity and ethnically diverse population. The Zhuang people, constituting the largest minority group in the area, possess a wealth of traditional knowledge concerning wild edible plants (WEPs) owing to the region's favorable environment and dietary customs. With the rapid development of urbanization, tourism, and trade, the Zhuang people's food culture, including the consumption of wild edible plants, has become an attractive aspect of urban development. However, there is almost no comprehensive report available on WEPs consumed by the Zhuang people. The objectives of this study were to: (1) conduct a comprehensive ethnobotanical investigation of the WEPs among the Zhuang people in the region; (2) evaluate the cultural food significance index (CFSI) for the local communities; (3) summarize the cultural characteristics of the wild edible plants consumed, providing scientific support for the development of Fangchenggang as a sustainable and attractive tourism destination.

Abstract:A systematic study of butterfly species and dynamics has been conducted in the Wuyanling of Zhejiang,with sampling plots set and net capture adopted there.Microsoft Excel was utilized to list the butterfly species and the number collected,followed by calculation and graphing to analyze species-abundance curves,diversity index,evenness and dominant degree.The category of butterfly was then used as an indicator to evaluate forest environmental health of these areas.The Wuyanling mountains had 148 species belonging to 9 families,a nationally protected Grade I,Teinopalpus aureus,3 protected species within China,and 11 species native to China,with a diversity index of 1.7570,respectively,which indicated that the environmental quality of the area was excellent.
Comparative Studies on the Ecological Strategies of an Endangered Species Changium Smyrnioides and a Non-Endangered Species Anthriscus Sylvestris

Abstract:Changium smyrnioides Wolff, a monotypic species of family Umbellaceae, has a narrow distribution area and can found only in Yangtze River basin in China; the widespread Anthriscus sylvestris (L.) Hoffm can be found from temperate to subtropical zone in Asia, Europe and North America. Both species have fleshy roots, which are prized in Chinese medicine. Because of the land use, C. smyrnioides has now become an endangered species, while A. sylvestris do not endangered. Comparative studies on the ecological strategies based on the biological and ecological traits of the two species in present paper, aimed to find out the endangered mechanism of C. smyrnioides. Research was conducted at Hangzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, Chuzhou and Anqing. The shoot of C. smyrnioides has only the basal leaf, which ensures it can capture light efficiently at ground level. The aboveground leaf area ratio (LAR_a) of C. smyrnioides was found to be higher than A. sylvestris, suggesting it can capture more light per unit of biomass. After spring time, C. smyrnioides loses its survival competitiveness as other herbaceous species can grow rapidly and impedes sunlight. C. smyrnioides is not a shade-tolerant species, that may explain why C. smyrnioides are typically found in small population under defoliated trees. Conversely, A. sylvestris can increase light absorption and out-compete other herbaceous by its distinct ability to expand densely and occupies extra horizontal and vertical space. In a word, C. smyrnioides is more effective in light capture and water acquisition than A. sylvestris, but the ecological strategy it with cause it specialized or overspecialized to the narrow environment, which were limited under the deciduous trees in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest zone in winter. As the human disturbance (digging for medicinal use and deforestation) becoming serious, C. smyrnioides becoming rare and an endangered plant.

Abstract:Large scale heterogeneous distribution of biodiversity has become a hot topic for ecologists and conservationists. A threat status assessment combined with geographic distribution patterns of threatened plants in China has been conducted at a national scale in this study based upon a distribution database that refers to both specimen records and published references. Currently, 302 threatened plant species are cataloged in the “National Protected Key Wild Plants” in China belonging to 92 families and 194 genera. Results of the assessment according to the Categories and Criteria system of The World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List indicate that three species have been assessed as Extinct in Wild (EW) while a further 79, 99 and 112 species have been assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU), respectively. Distribution patterns of threatened plants were analyzed with GIS to identify areas of high species diversity. It was found that threatened plant species occur unevenly within counties and are concentrated in the following eight hotspots: the central and southern Hengduanshan mountain area; the southeast regions of Yunnan as well as Xishuangbanna and southwestern Guangxi; the southern Hainan island; the border mountainous regions of Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi provinces; the mountainous regions of southwestern Hubei and northern Hunan; southwestern Zhejiang and western Fujian; central Sichuan and southern Gansu; and the western mountains of Guangdong. Moreover, the 12 counties with the greatest number of threatened plant species represent cumulatively more than 50% of the total listed species and, therefore, are the regions in China that should be prioritized for conservation efforts. By overlapping the map of threatened plant species with the distribution of national nature reserves, a gap was identified in protected areas. This research will ultimately provide insights for prioritizing biodiversity conservation as well as processing the mechanisms of distribution patterns.

Abstract:Xishuangbanna is on the northern margins of tropical Asia in southwestern China and has the largest area of tropical forest remaining in the country. It is in the Indo-Burma hotspot and contains 16% of China's vascular flora in <0.2% of the country's total area (19,690 km(2) ). Rapid expansion of monoculture crops in the last 20 years, particularly rubber, threatens this region's exceptional biodiversity. To understand the effects of land-use change and collection on orchid species diversity and determine protection priorities, we conducted systematic field surveys, observed markets, interviewed orchid collectors, and then determined the conservation status of all orchids. We identified 426 orchid species in 115 genera in Xishuangbanna: 31% of all orchid species that occur in China. Species richness was highest at 1000-1200 m elevation. Three orchid species were assessed as possibly extinct in the wild, 15 as critically endangered, 82 as endangered, 124 as vulnerable, 186 as least concern, and 16 as data deficient. Declines over 20 years in harvested species suggested over-collection was the major threat, and utility value (i.e., medicinal or ornamental value) was significantly related to endangerment. Expansion of rubber tree plantations was less of a threat to orchids than to other taxa because only 75 orchid species (17.6%) occurred below the 1000-m-elevation ceiling for rubber cultivation, and most of these (46) occurred in nature reserves. However, climate change is projected to lift this ceiling to around 1300 m by 2050, and the limited area at higher elevations reduces the potential for upslope range expansion. The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden is committed to achieving zero plant extinctions in Xishuangbanna, and orchids are a high priority. Appropriate in and ex situ conservation strategies, including new protected areas and seed banking, have been developed for every threatened orchid species and are being implemented.

Abstract:National key protected wild plants (NKPWPs) are species with important conservation value based on genetics, ecology, culture, and/or scientific research, which are also confronted with serious threats. However, their geographical distribution patterns and conservation status remain unclear. In this study, we compiled 1,032 species of NKPWPs. We measured the diversity to identify NKPWPs hotspots based on species richness, weighted range size rarity and a complementarity‐based analysis. Comparing the distribution and hotspots of NKPWPs with the coverage of Chinese nature reserves (NRs), we assessed conservation effectiveness and identified conservation gaps. The results identified 13 diversity hotspots; only 9.5% of them were covered by NRs with >30% of the grid cell area, and even 19.5% were not covered at all by NRs. Overall, 44.7% of NKPWPs are effectively protected by national NRs. Despite this success, 571 species in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Guangdong, southern Hainan, Taiwan, and northern Xinjiang remain unprotected by NRs. The protected proportion of plants with first‐level protection was lower than that of plants with second‐level protection. The low overall proportion of protected hotspots indicates that the conservation outlook for NKPWPs is not optimistic. This study identifies priority conservation areas and conservation gaps and provides a scientific reference for the conservation of wild plants in China.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The Maolan national nature reserve of Guizhou is located in 107°52′10″~108°05′40″E,25°09′20″~25°20′50″N,it is the best preserved karst forest ecological system in subtropical areas.There are more than 130 species Orchid in Maolan nature reserve.For a long time,the local ethnic minority people had the habit of using part of Orchid plants as medicine.There are 65 species medicinal Orchid plants.The demand of the outside world has increased the outflow of resources of the nature reserve.Some Orchid plants are on the verge of extinct,for example,Dendrobium officinale,Anoectochilus roxburghii,Nervilia fordii and so on.The protection improved greatly,the law enforced strictly at the same time,the medicinal plants of orchids was used correctly guidance,cultivate artificial imitation of the wild organized actively,it is an important way for protecting the traditional culture and the resources orchids plants.

Butterfly diversity and evaluation of forest eco-system health in important ecological areas of Zhejiang Province

Abstract:A systematic study of butterfly species and dynamics has been conducted in the important ecological areas of Zhejiang including the mountains of Longwang, Tianmu, Gutian, Wuyanling and Baishanzu, with sampling plots set and net capture adopted there. Microsoft Excel was used to list the butterfly species and number collected, followed by calculation and graphing to analyze species-abundance curves, diversity index, evenness and dominant degree. The category of butterfly was then used as an indicator to evaluate forest environmental health of these areas. The results reveal that in these areas distribution of butterfly category fitted a logarithmic normal distribution, but the number of each butterfly category was in conformity with the rule of a logarithmic series. The Tianmu and Wuyanling Mountains had a nationally protected Grade II Luehdorfia chinensis and a nationally protected Grade I Ornithoptera alexandrae, 4 and 3 protected species within China, and 25 and 11 species native to China, with a diversity index of 0.9757 and 1.7570, respectively, which indicated that the environmental quality of these two areas was excellent. The mountains of Gutian and Baishanzu had no nationally protected species found and only had 2 and 3 protected species within China and 5 and 15 species native to China, with a diversity index of 1.3492 and 1.1593, respectively, which also indicated a good environmental quality. The Longwang Mountain had no nationally protected species found and only had one protected species within China, 11 species native to China, with a diversity index of 0.8491, which meant that the environmental quality there was relatively poor or the environmental quality there tended to deteriorate. In recent years, such natural climates as acidic rain and typhoon and human disturbance have a different impact on forest environmental health. In the Longwang Mountain, forest environment has been unstable and deteriorated severely, part of which has not been suitable for survival of such insects as butterfly protected species.
