Abstract:Objective To investigate the auditory function and hair cell damages of guinea pigs after exposing them to music played by MP3 players though an earphone. Methods The guinea pigs were allocated into two groups: the control group and the experimental group. The animals in the experimental group were exposed to music played by MP3 players through an earphone for 14 days(5 hours / day),while the control group received no music exposure.Auditory function was assessed by auditory brainstem response(ABR) before, during, and after exposure.Surface preparations were made to document the hair cell loss. Results During and after exposure, the ABR thresholds in the experimental group rose significantly, whereas no apparent change was found in the control group. The differences between the two groups were evident.Surface preparation of cochlear basilar membrane showed partial loss of outer hair cells in the experimental groups after exposure. The degrees of hair cell loss varied with different turns of the cochlea. The most severe loss was found in the basal turn, and the outer hair cells in the second and third rows had greater damage than in the first row.The miss rates of outer hair cells were significantly different between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion Music played by MP3 players through an earphone could cause auditory impairments in guinea pigs.Such impairments were expressed as rises in ABR thresholds and partial losses of outer hair cells.
