Abstract:More than a century is passed since Freud conceived the concept of defense mechanisms. In this article, we retrace the historical evolution of the construct and offer a narrative review of current clinical and empirical literature on its relevance in clinical psychology. Conceptual contributions and empirical findings on the relationship between defenses and personality, as well as between defensive styles and psychopathology (e.g., eating, depressive, and personality disorders) were described. Findings showed that defense mechanisms can help clinicians in understanding the function of patients' symptoms and in tailoring therapeutic interventions. Lastly, we reviewed studies on the potential role of defense mechanisms in unpredictable and changing environmental conditions, such as the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. All these studies support the view that defensive functioning is a key topic in the mental health field, and that the further application of reliable and clinically relevant assessment tools is a pivotal future direction in both research and clinical practice.

Abstract:The concept of defense mechanisms has problems and deficiencies, the most serious its neglect of unwitting, but conscious mental activity in the defense process. Clinical observation shows that individuals, not conscious of their purpose, reflexively think and act in ways that forestall or dispel anxiety. Contrary to Anna Freud's claim, the process of defense is in some measure observable. Self-deception by subjects of coercion can be seen also as a defense against external threat similar to that of internal threat.

Abstract:This paper draws on the writings of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, George Vaillant and other sources in an attempt to derive an exhaustive list of potential defense mechanisms, including some adaptive behaviors conventionally regarded as coping strategies. It then analyses them collectively as a set of well-evidenced patterns of human behavior that might be traceable to common mental operations. It organizes them by whether they modulate attention, affect or data and by whether they negate it or divert it externally or internally. From this, three distinct categories of defense are identified, each of which, it is hypothesized, operates to override a different (anoetic, noetic or autonoetic) layer of consciousness by effecting a mental enactment in substitution for a conditioned primary-process behavioral response associated with one of the negative basic emotions PANIC/GRIEF, FEAR and RAGE, or a diversion of one such behavioral response to another context. These, it is suggested, operate homeostatically to attempt to limit sensory intake (PANIC/GRIEF), modify hedonic valencing (FEAR), or fabricate causal data (RAGE) to reduce the prediction work of consciousness so that emotions remain within viable bounds and automaticity can be resumed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications, including the potential for greater diagnostic precision and efficacy of treatment.

Abstract:Mind-wandering is involuntary conscious experience arising internally,and it's a significant part of "stream of consciousness".The phenomenon of mind-wandering suggests the significance of non-perceptual consciousness in human consciousness system,and the significance of ongoing unconscious processing for individual survival.The research about mind-wandering is becoming the live topic in psychology and cognitive neuroscience.After reviewing the studies about the content of mind-wandering,its relation with emotion and its neural correlates,we discussed the possible mechanism of mind-wandering and its adaptive function.At the end of the paper,we summarised the deficiency of the existing studies,such as the ambiguity in the definition of mind-wandering and the methodological limitations,and the future study trends was developed.
Theoretical foundations of reaction formation as a defense mechanism

Abstract:Among the defense mechanisms, reaction formation is presented as the most stable, pervading the entire personality structure. The source of the defensive energy is explored within the context of drive theory, paralleling superego development and the processes of functional autonomy of other drive derivatives. The dynamics of balancing affect against behavior are analyzed with reference to the adaptive function of compulsion. Reaction formation is shown to relate closely to repression in its capacity for comprehensive impulse negation. the centrality of reaction formation within the constellation of anal characterology is underlined. Implications of the defense are discussed for empirical and clinical research in psychoanalysis.

Abstract:The paper proposes the author’s classification of psychological defense mechanisms, consisting of 20 mechanisms and representing a two-dimensional model. The idea of this model is that these mechanisms have a cross-relationship between 4 levels of the hierarchy (psychotic, infantile, neurotic, and adaptive groups) and 5 types of overcoming frustration which are the basis for the formation and functioning of the defense mechanism. The novelty of the article is the idea that each of the 20 defense mechanisms belongs to one of the 5 types of overcoming frustration — distracting type (mechanisms of regression, action out, compensation, sublimation), «guilty» type (mechanisms of hypochondria, passive-aggressive behavior, reactive formation, altruism), avoiding type (mechanisms of repression, denial, avoidance, suppression), rationalizing type (mechanisms of dissociation, displacement/transfer, rationalization, humor), controlling type (mechanisms of isolation, projection, omnipotence, anticipation). The paper provides description of the defense mechanisms, examples of their manifestation, and possible reasons for their formation. The substantiation of the defense mechanisms’ belonging to the particular groups and types of classification is given. The classification is proposed as a convenient diagnostic tool for counseling psychologists, because it has an optimal number of defense mechanisms, fairly clear criteria for their determination, their location in the structure of psychological defense and the basis for their functioning. The article also provides an overview of current classifications of defense mechanisms and voices problems related to the identification and streamlining of defense mechanisms. These problems are the subtlety of semantic difference and blurring of borders between defense mechanisms, different interpretations in terminology due to difficulties in translation from foreign languages, differences in approaches to hierarchy of defense mechanisms.

Abstract:Objective To explore the characteristics of defense mechanism in schizophrenic patients with ado-lescent onset age or adult onset age. Methods A total of 30 schizophrenic patients with adolescent onset age, 30 schizophrenic patients with adult onset age and 30 normal controls were tested with Defense Styles Question-naire (DSQ). Results The factor scores of immature and mediate defense mechanism were significantly higher in patients, compared with normal controls (P<0.05), the factor score of mature defense mechanism was sig-nificantly positively correlated with onset age of schizophrenia (P<0.01). Conclusion Schizophrenic patients tend to use immature and mediate defense mechanism. Mature defense mechanism would be influenced by the onset age of schizophrenia.

Abstract:The relative evidences from behavioral studies and electrophysiological studies have proved that the memory mechanism plays an important role in language comprehension.On one hand,working memory provides the operable platform for language comprehension,and the limited storage is the cause of comprehension strategies.On the other hand,long-term memory offers necessary backup-support for language comprehension.Based on the discussion upon the relationship between language comprehension and the memory mechanism,the paper retrospectively analyzes the effect mechanism of memory and the nature of the working memory system,summarizes the relative theories and the experimental evidences.In the end,the directions for future researches are put forward.

Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between defense mechanism and personality of depression patients.Methods Forty-six depressive patients and 31 health controls were tested with Swedish University Scales of Personality(SSP) and Defensive Style Questionnaire( DSQ) .Results Comparing with normal controls ,depressive patients tended to use more immature and intermediate mechanism such as projection,passive aggression ,unconscious emerge, fantasy,withdraw,somatization,reaction formation,pseudo-altruism,isolation and intercourse tendency,but less use mature mechanism such as sublimation (P<0.05) .Compared with controls,the depressive patients showed higher SSP scores on Somatic Trait Anxiety(STA) ,Stress Susceptibility(SS) ,Lack of Assertiveness(LA) ,Embitterment(E) ,Social Desirability(SD) and Trait Irritability(TI) (P<0.05) .All other subscales of SSP in depressive patients,excluding Adventure Seeking(AS) ,Detachment(D) ,Verbal Trait Aggression(VTA) and Physical Trait Aggression( PhTA) , were significantly correlated with total score of immature mechanism (P<0.05) .Depressive patient's SSP subscale scores of STA,LA,E,Impulsiveness(I) ,Mistrust( M) and VTA were significantly positively correlated with intermediate mechanism,while mature mechanism were significantly negatively correlated with E and positively correlated with SD.Conclusion Depressive patients show more immature defense mechanism,and have the neurotic and psychotic personality traits.Their personality traits would be correlated with defense mechanism.

Abstract:Defense mechanism is strategies the ego uses to defend itself against the anxiety provoked by conflicts. The aim of the research is to describe the types of defense mechanism in two of Poe’s selected short stories, The Black Cat & The Tell-Tale Heart & to reveal the implementation of characters’ mechanism in solving the conflicts. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a psychoanalysis approach Sigmund Freud’s theory of defense mechanism. The data constitute both primary & supporting data. The primary data derived from E. A. Poe’s Selected Short Stories The Black Cat & The Tell-Tale Heart, while the supporting data were taken by means of library research mainly from books, theses, dissertation, electronic articles & journals. The results show that the characters have performed a range of defense mechanisms in Poe’s selected short stories. In The Black Cat & The Tell-Tale Heart stories, the characters are mainly concerned with repression, denial, reaction formation, rationalization, displacement of self-defense. These characters performed a range of defense mechanism in order to resolve the conflicts.

Abstract:Defense mechanism is a strategy or effort developed by the ego to dispel unpleasant feelings caused by anxiety so that unpleasant feelings and experiences feel better. The purpose of the study are to reveal the type of anxiety experienced by Jacob Barber in William Landay's Defending Jacob and discover how defense mechanisms work to overcome this anxiety. The method used in this study is qualitative by applying Sigmund Freud's anxiety and defense mechanism theory in a psychoanalytic approach. The data in this study are in the form of phrases, sentences, and dialogues contained in the novel Defending Jacob written by William Landay. The results of this study indicate that there are three types of anxiety experienced by Jacob Barber. They are neurotic, moral, and realistic anxiety. In order to overcome these anxiety, Jacob Barber uses five types of defense mechanisms, namely denial, projection, displacement, rationalization, and reaction formation. The types of defense mechanisms that are most often used to overcome the anxiety that arise in Jacob Barber are projection and displacement.

Abstract:Mentalized affectivity is the ability to draw from prior and present contexts to evaluate and modulate one’s emotions. Defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies used to protect a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings. The present study explores the relationship between caregivers’ mentalized affectivity and children’s defense mechanisms. Children who underwent a neuropsychological assessment or an individual psychotherapy intake at a low-fee outpatient mental health clinic were recruited (N = 24 dyads). Caregivers completed the Brief Mentalized Affectivity Scale (BMAS), a 12-item self-report questionnaire to assess three components of mentalized affectivity: identifying, processing, and expressing of emotions. Children completed the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT); responses were coded based on Cramer’s Defense Mechanism Manual. The findings of the analysis are consistent with the hypothesis that denial is more prevalent at younger ages (<8 years), while identification is more common in latency and adolescence (>8 years). Among children older than 8 years old, lower caregiver mentalized affectivity was associated with significantly more primitive defense use (i.e., denial) on the part of the child. Although there were limitations to the findings, results from this exploratory study have important implications for caregiver-child therapeutic interventions and warrant further examination as the sample size grows.

Abstract:Need for Cognitive Closure is one of individuals’ stable cognitive characters. It describes individuals’ motivation to process information systematically when people are facing ambiguous situations. Many researchers found that need for cognitive closure has significant influence on individuals’ information processing and decision making. Generally speaking, individuals with high dispositional need for cognitive closure are more likely to rely on heuristics to make decisions, so they commit to cognitive traps such as over-attribution and primacy effect more frequently. Even though most researchers regarded need for cognitive closure as a stable cognitive character, others found that it could be changed to some degree by environmental factors such as noise in a short term. Thus, in a specific study need for cognitive closure can either be measured by a scale, or be manipulated by changing the level of environmental noise or time pressure. Previous literatures have some limitations as well. Firstly, few studies have been done to investigate how to make people with high dispositional need for cognitive closure to process information systematically. Secondly, almost all of the studies were conducted in laboratories so their external validity may suffer. Thirdly, even though it seems obvious that need for cognitive closure could be applied to the area of conflict research, this promising topic has been neglected totally so far. More studies are expected to overcome those limitations.

Abstract:This research is an analysis of 3 short stories by Shirley Ren The Pink Umbrella (2019), Jason Sanford The Eight-Thousanders (2020) and Alyssa Wong A Fist of Permutations in Lightning and Wildflowers (2016). This research discusses about defense mechanisms applied to oppose reality. Defense mechanisms are commonly used in everyday life, a person applies defense mechanisms when the ego can no longer balance the id and superego and worries arise in the person. However, if this is done to oppose reality, it will cause new prolonged conflict. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method which is using psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud which deals with opposing reality and defense mechanisms. This research aims to find out what types of defense mechanism applied by character and how the symptoms appear. The analysis of this study revealed that the character applies 2 defense mechanisms, namely denial and displacement, to oppose reality and the symptoms that arise. The conclusion of this study is defense mechanisms applied to oppose reality is not good, not to change things that are not desirable but to cause new prolonged conflicts. Opposing reality means not being able to come to terms with reality and not being able to come to terms with one self so that as a result the characters go through life in misery.

Abstract:Research on attitude-behavior relationship was an important topic in Social Psychology. This article focuses on psychological studies on attitude-behavior relationship and analyzes the transition of the research routes on the basic of systematically reviewing the development and change of this relationship. It stresses the factors which influence the relationship of attitude and behavior. The analysis has great significance in understanding and holding attitude-behavior relationship. The article also points out the future direction of attitude-behavior relationship research from personality, culture and the structure of attitude.
