Abstract:In this paper, the exact evolving state for a two-level quantum system is found by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory. In principle, the correction to an arbitrary order in the adiabatic approximation parameter epsilon can be obtained from this exact evolving state. To the n-th order in epsilon, it is shown that the exact evolving state reduces to the superadiabatic basis introduced by Berry recently. The Aharonov-Anandan phase and its adiabatic limit (Berry phase for the system) are also calculated.

Abstract:We show that in a quantum adiabatic evolution, even though the adiabatic approximation is valid, the total phase of the final state indicated by the adiabatic theorem may evidently differ from the actual total phase. This invalidates the application of the linearity and the adiabatic approximation simultaneously. Besides, based on this observation we point out the mistake in the traditional proof for the adiabatic theorem. This mistake is the root of the troubles that the adiabatic theorem has met. We also show that a similar mistake remains in some recent modifications of the traditional adiabatic theorem attempting to eliminate the troubles.

Abstract:The quantum adiabatic theorem states that if a quantum system starts in an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, and this Hamiltonian varies sufficiently slowly, the system stays in this eigenstate. We investigate experimentally the conditions that must be fulfilled for this theorem to hold. We show that the traditional adiabatic condition as well as some conditions that were recently suggested are either not sufficient or not necessary. Experimental evidence is presented by a simple experiment using nuclear spins.

Abstract:Quantum control could be implemented by varying the system Hamiltonian. According to adiabatic theorem, a slowly changing Hamiltonian can approximately keep the system at the ground state during the evolution if the initial state is a ground state. In this paper we consider this process as an interpolation between the initial and final Hamiltonians. We use the mean value of a single operator to measure the distance between the final state and the ideal ground state. This measure resembles the excitation energy or excess work performed in thermodynamics, which can be taken as the error of adiabatic approximation. We prove that under certain conditions, this error can be estimated for an arbitrarily given interpolating function. This error estimation could be used as guideline to induce adiabatic evolution. According to our calculation, the adiabatic approximation error is not linearly proportional to the average speed of the variation of the system Hamiltonian and the inverse of the energy gaps in many cases. In particular, we apply this analysis to an example in which the applicability of the adiabatic theorem is questionable.

Abstract:Recently, quantum adiabatic computation has attracted more and more attention in the literature. It is a novel quantum computation model based on adiabatic approximation, and the analysis of a quantum adiabatic algorithm depends highly on the adiabatic conditions. However, it has been pointed out that the traditional adiabatic conditions are problematic. Thus, results obtained previously should be checked and sufficient adiabatic conditions applicable to adiabatic computation should be proposed. Based on a result of Tong et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 150402 (2007)], we propose a modified adiabatic criterion which is more applicable to the analysis of adiabatic algorithms. As an example, we prove the validity of the local adiabatic search algorithm by employing our criterion.

Abstract:The quantum adiabatic theorem plays an important role in quantum mechanics. However, counter-examples were produced recently, indicating that their transition probabilities do not converge as predicted by the adiabatic theorem [K. P. Marzlin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408 (2004); D. M. Tong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 110407 (2005)]. For a special class of Hamiltonians, we examine the standard criterion for adiabatic evolution experimentally and theoretically, as well as three newly suggested adiabatic conditions. We show that the standard criterion is neither sufficient nor necessary.
The Burst Mode of Protostellar Accretion

Abstract:We present new numerical simulations in the thin-disk approximation which characterize the burst mode of protostellar accretion. The burst mode begins upon the formation of a centrifugally balanced disk around a newly formed protostar. It is comprised of prolonged quiescent periods of low accretion rate (typically $\la 10^{-7} \Msun$ yr$^{-1}$) which are punctuated by intense bursts of accretion (typically $\ga 10^{-4} \Msun$ yr$^{-1}$, with duration $\la 100$ yr) during which most of the protostellar mass is accumulated. The accretion bursts are associated with the formation of dense protostellar/protoplanetary embryos, which are later driven onto the protostar by the gravitational torques that develop in the disk. Gravitational instability in the disk, driven by continuing infall from the envelope, is shown to be an effective means of transporting angular momentum outward, and mass inward to the protostar. We show that the disk mass always remains significantly less than the central protostar mass throughout this process. The burst phenomenon is robust enough to occur for a variety of initial values of rotation rate, frozen-in (supercritical) magnetic field, and density-temperature relations. Even in cases where the bursts are nearly entirely suppressed, a moderate increase in cloud size or rotation rate can lead to vigorous burst activity. We conclude that most (if not all) protostars undergo a burst mode of evolution during their early accretion history, as inferred empirically from observations of FU Orionis variables.

Abstract:We formulate the theory of shortcuts to adiabaticity in classical mechanics. For a reference Hamiltonian, the counterdiabatic term is constructed from the dispersionless Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy. Then the adiabatic theorem holds exactly for an arbitrary choice of time-dependent parameters. We use the Hamilton-Jacobi theory to define the generalized action. The action is independent of the history of the parameters and is directly related to the adiabatic invariant. The dispersionless KdV hierarchy is obtained from the classical limit of the KdV hierarchy for the quantum shortcuts to adiabaticity. This correspondence suggests some relation between the quantum and classical adiabatic theorems.

Abstract:Validity conditions for the adiabatic approximation are useful tools to understand and predict the quantum dynamics. Remarkably, the resonance phenomenon in oscillating quantum systems has challenged the adiabatic theorem. In this scenario, inconsistencies in the application of quantitative adiabatic conditions have led to a sequence of new approaches for adiabaticity. Here, by adopting a different strategy, we introduce a validation mechanism for the adiabatic approximation by driving the quantum system to a non-inertial reference frame. More specifically, we begin by considering several relevant adiabatic approximation conditions previously derived and show that all of them fail by introducing a suitable oscillating Hamiltonian for a single quantum bit (qubit). Then, by evaluating the adiabatic condition in a rotated non-inertial frame, we show that all of these conditions, including the standard adiabatic condition, can correctly describe the adiabatic dynamics in the original frame, either far from resonance or at a resonant point. Moreover, we prove that this validation mechanism can be extended for general multi-particle quantum systems, establishing the conditions for the equivalence of the adiabatic behavior as described in inertial or non-inertial frames. In order to experimentally investigate our method, we consider a hyperfine qubit through a single trapped Ytterbium ion 171 Yb + , where the ion hyperfine energy levels are used as degrees of freedom of a two-level system. By monitoring the quantum evolution, we explicitly show the consistency of the adiabatic conditions in the non-inertial frame.

Abstract:We study neutrino interactions in a hadron gas within a relativistic framework. The hadron matter is described by a non-interacting Fermi gas in beta equilibrium. We show that the introduction of relativistic effects causes a sizable enhancement of the neutrino-scattering cross sections.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a U(1)-invariant expansion theory of the adiabatic process. As its application, we propose and discuss different sufficient adiabatic approximation conditions. Abstract:The simulation of adiabatic evolution has deep connections with Adiabatic Quantum Computation, the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm and adiabatic state preparation. Here we address the error analysis problem in quantum simulation of adiabatic process using Trotter formulas. We show that with additional conditions, the circuit depth can be linear in simulation time $T$. The improvement comes from the observation that the fidelity error here can't be estimated by the norm distance between evolution operators. This phenomenon is termed as the robustness of discretization in digital adiabatic simulation. It can be explained in three steps, from analytical and numerical evidence: (1). The fidelity error should be estimated by applying adiabatic theorem on the effective Hamiltonian instead. (2). Because of the specialty of Riemann-Lebesgue lemma, most adiabatic process is naturally robust against discretization. (3). As the Trotter step gets larger, the spectral gap of effective Hamiltonian tends to close, which results in the failure of digital adiabatic simulation.

Abstract:The propagation of errors severely compromises the reliability of quantum computations. The quantum adiabatic algorithm is a physically motivated method to prepare ground states of classical and quantum Hamiltonians. Here, we analyze the proliferation of a single error event in the adiabatic algorithm. We give numerical evidence using tensor network methods that the intrinsic properties of adiabatic processes effectively constrain the amplification of errors during the evolution for geometrically local Hamiltonians. Our findings indicate that low energy states could remain attainable even in the presence of a single error event, which contrasts with results for error propagation in typical quantum circuits.

Abstract:We introduce a simple framework for estimating lower bounds on the runtime of a broad class of adiabatic quantum algorithms. The central formula consists of calculating the variance of the final Hamiltonian with respect to the initial state. After examining adiabatic versions of certain keystone circuit-based quantum algorithms, this technique is applied to adiabatic quantum algorithms with undetermined speedup. In particular, we analytically obtain lower bounds on adiabatic algorithms for finding k-clique in random graphs. Additionally, for a particular class of Hamiltonian, it is straightforward to prove the equivalence between our framework and the conventional approach based on spectral gap analysis.

Abstract:The theoretical analysis of the Adiabatic Quantum Computation protocol presents several challenges resulting from the difficulty of simulating, with classical resources, the unitary dynamics of a large quantum device. We present here a variational approach to substantially alleviate this problem in many situations of interest. Our approach is based on the time-dependent Variational Monte Carlo method, in conjunction with a correlated and time-dependent Jastrow ansatz. We demonstrate that accurate results can be obtained in a variety of problems, ranging from the description of defect generation through a dynamical phase transition in 1D to the complex dynamics of frustrated spin-glass problems both on fully-connected and Chimera graphs.

Abstract:Quantum adiabaticity is characterized by the evolution of a quantum system that remains close to an instantaneous eigenstate of a time-varying Hamiltonian, precluding transitions between eigenstates. Employing Floquet formalism, we rigorously establish two sufficient conditions that ensure quantum adiabaticity in periodically driven systems, applicable for time evolution of arbitrary length. Distinct from traditional conditions, the Floquet-based conditions are tight for certain specific parameter regimes, dispense with supplementary constraints, and suggest the possibility of adiabaticity at high frequencies. We provide three illustrative examples that compare and contrast the Floquet conditions with traditional ones.

An explicit adiabatic computation procedure is given that generates a ground state from which the answer can be extracted. The amount of time needed is evaluated by computing the gap.
