Patient delay and the impact factors for senile pulmonary tuberculosis in rural area

Abstract:0bjective To further analyze the situation of patient delay and the impact factors for senile pulmonary tuberculosis in rural area,and to improve the work of tuberculosis control in rural senile population.Methods A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted.In addition to establishing the specialized outpatient cases,a consecutive sample of rural patients,aged 60 years and over,with newly smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis was interviewed from January 2005 to June 2008.Patient delay was defined as more than 2 weeks from first symptoms to first visit for doctors.Results Patient delay was rather common in TB patients,with 58.1% of TB patients delayed in seeking health care.The average time of patient delay was 7.8 weeks.Factors significantly contributing to patient delay were lack of the knowledge of tuberculosis prevention and cure,financial difficulties and inconvenience in seeking health care and so on.Conclusions Patient delay is rather common in rural senile population.TB awareness should be improved by targeted health promotion activities,and integrated measures should be taken to change the health care seeking behaviors in the rural senile population.
