Abstract:Organic homostructures with tunable physiochemical properties were fabricated by simply changing the isomer molecules via the "cocrystal engineering" approach. The morphology of the cocrystals can be changed into rod-like or branched, with superior waveguide and multi-directional waveguide performance, respectively, which contributes to the realization of optical waveguide modules with integrated functions.

Abstract:One dimensional(1D)organic axial micro/nanocrystals serving as the building block towards integrated nanostructures have been demonstrated in various nanosystems[1-3].As an emerging solid-state platform,these micro/nanostructures are increasingly being regarded as potential candidates for constructing optoelectronic circuits.Despite remarkable achievements,pioneering works simultaneously revealed the shortage of non-guidance for molecu-lar nucleation in these 1D axial micro/nanostructures[4-6],posing a great challenge for the practical applications.From this perspec-tive,there is urgent to develop special 1D axial micro/nanostruc-tures to promote the generation of highly ordered integrated structures.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) crystalline organic frameworks with complex topologies, high surface area, and low densities afford a variety of application prospects. However, the design and construction of these frameworks have been largely limited to systems containing polyhedron-shaped building blocks or those relying on component interpenetration. Here, we report the synthesis of a 3D crystalline organic framework based on molecular mortise-and-tenon jointing. This new material takes advantage of tetra(4-pyridylphenyl)ethylene and chlorinated bis(benzodioxaborole)benzene as building blocks and is driven by dative B-N bonds. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the framework reveals the presence of two-dimensional (2D) layers with helical channels that are formed presumably during the boron-nitrogen coordination process. The protrusion of dichlorobenzene units from the upper and lower surfaces of the 2D layers facilitates the key mortise-and-tenon connections. These connections enable the interlocking of adjacent layers and the stabilization of an overall 3D framework. The resulting framework is endowed with high porosity and attractive mechanical properties, rendering it potentially suitable for the removal of impurities from acetylene.

Abstract:Sophisticated architectures assembled from a single class of subunits by cooperative interactions are ubiquitous in nature. The construction of their artificial mimics, however, remains one of the most formidable challenges facing synthetic chemists. Here, we report a hierarchical diamondoid superstructure- namely, a supramolecular diamond- -that is constructed from the multiple-level self-assembly of a highly symmetrical salt, hexakis[(4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium)methylene]benzene hexafluorophosphate. The uniform octahedral single crystals, with 96 cationic organic fragments and 96 counteranions in a unit cell, can be prepared quantitatively in a controllable one-step procedure within seconds at ambient conditions. The sizes of the resulting samples are modulated from 280 nm to 660 mu m. The mechanism of the self-assembly was elucidated at the atomic level. As proof of its intrinsically cationic superstructure with mobile anions, the three-dimensional nanoporous framework can exchange efficiently with metal oxoanions. This research shows that precisely tunable hierarchical assemblies can translate charged molecules into complicated architectures.

Abstract:Novel fluorescent organic soft porous crystals have been designed and prepared based on a multi-substituted silole bearing 1-phenyl-2,2-dicyanoethene moieties (molecule 8). 8 exhibited a series of emission colors, ranging from yellow to dark red with an over 70 nm shift of emission maximum. Molecule 8 also showed the ability to reversibly switch between different solid states, and a typical mechanofluorochromism was observed by cyclic operation of the grinding–heating–cooling processes. In addition, two single crystals (O and R) were successfully obtained in proper conditions, and the crystallographic data indicated that crystal O and R had reasonable hollow structures, inside which different solvent molecules were selectively encapsulated. More importantly, we have presented a proof-of-concept example of the strategy for the designation of organic soft porous crystals with a conjugated fluorophore and demonstrated the successful achievement of softness, porosity and crystallization ability. This design strategy is instructive to design and construct organic soft porous crystals with other conjugated building blocks and develop novel smart and stimuli-responsive photo/electronic materials.

Abstract:Organic heterostructured micro-/nanomaterials (OHTMs) integrating heterostructured advantages and organic material character have drawn strong attention in nanoscience and nanotechnology to meet the ever-increasing technological requirements. However, the fine synthesis of OHTMs with high spatial/angular characteristics remains challenging because of the complex epitaxial relationships of material combinations. Herein, we develop a rational sequential self-assembly strategy to synthesize the OHTMs composed of m-BCB or o-BCB one-dimensional (1D) microrods or microbelts as trunks and TPBe 2D microplates as branches via regulating the pi-pi interaction intensity (vertical bar Eo-BCB = -25.56 kcal mol(-1)vertical bar > vertical bar Em-BCB = -15.49 kcal mol(-1)vertical bar > vertical bar E-TPBe = -5.06 kcal mol(-1)vertical bar). Notably, both the lattice matching and the surface-interface energy balance prefer heterogeneous nucleation and epitaxial growth of the branch part on the surfaces of the preformed seed trunk part. Our sequential self-assembly approach demonstrates a universal avenue to precisely synthesize the OHTMs in a desired mode, which provides promising candidate for the integrated optoelectronics.
Controllable Fabrication of Organic Cocrystals with Interior Hollow Structure Based on Donor-Acceptor Charge Transfer Molecules

Abstract:Fluorescent hollow organic molecular cocrystals comprised of (E)-4-(2(anthracen-9-yl)vinyl)pyridine-1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (APE-TCNB) were prepared via a surfactant-mediated co-precipitation method. The size and morphology of these cocrystals could be easily tuned by varying the type and concentration of the surfactant, incubation time, and temperature. Moreover, optical fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy characterization indicated that the APE-TCNB microcrystals contained two symmetric empty cavities when 3-(N, N-dimethyldodecylammonio)propane sulfonate (BS12) was used as the surfactant. The cross-polarized microscope and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements both showed that the prepared microcrystals exhibited high crystallinity. APE and TCNB molecules were found to align parallelly along the crystallographic a-axis in the crystal lattice, and the strong π–π intermolecular interactions facilitated the formation of unique crystal chambers. A series of measurements and characterization, including UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, steady-state, and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, also verified that strong charge–transfer (CT) interactions had been established in the APE-TCNB microcrystals. Moreover, these APE-TCNB microcrystals could emit bright red luminescence, which extended to the near-infrared region (~800 nm), displaying a strong charge-transfer property. Here, we have shown a general facile way to make organic cocrystals with complex structures and topologies using a self-assembly method.

Abstract:Abstract In the development of new organic crystals for nonlinear optical and terahertz (THz) applications, it is very challenging to achieve the essentially required non‐centrosymmetric molecular arrangement. Moreover, the resulting crystal structure is mostly unpredictable due to highly dipolar molecular components with complex functional substituents. In this work, new organic salt crystals with top‐level macroscopic optical nonlinearity by controlling the van der Waals volume ( V vdW ), rather than by trial and error, are logically designed. When the V vdW of molecular ionic components varies, the corresponding crystal symmetry shows an observable trend: change from centrosymmetric to non‐centrosymmetric and back to centrosymmetric. All non‐centrosymmetric crystals exhibit an isomorphic P 1 crystal structure with an excellent macroscopic second‐order nonlinear optical response. Apart from the top‐level macroscopic optical nonlinearity, new organic crystals introducing highly electronegative fluorinated substituents with strong secondary bonding ability show excellent performance in efficient and broadband THz wave generation, high crystal density, high thermal stability, and good bulk crystal growth ability.

Abstract:A novel class of crystalline porous materials has been developed utilizing multilevel dynamic linkages, including covalent B-O, dative B←N and hydrogen bonds. Typically, boronic acids undergo in situ condensation to afford B3O3-based units, which further extend to molecular complexes or chains via B←N bonds. The obtained superstructures are subsequently interconnected via hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, producing crystalline porous organic frameworks (CPOFs). The CPOFs display excellent solution processability, allowing dissolution and subsequent crystallization to their original structures, independent of recrystallization conditions, possibly due to the diverse bond energies of the involved interactions. Significantly, the CPOFs can be synthesized on a gram-scale using cost-effective monomers. In addition, the numerous acidic sites endow the CPOFs with high NH3 capacity, surpassing most porous organic materials and commercial materials.

Abstract:The formation of two-dimensional (2D) oriented porous organic cage crystals (consisting of imine-based tetrahedral molecules) on various substrates (such as silicon wafers and glass) by solution-processing is reported. Insight into the crystallinity, preferred orientation, and cage crystal growth was obtained by experimental and computational techniques. For the first time, structural defects in porous molecular materials were observed directly and the defect concentration could be correlated with crystal growth rate. These oriented crystals suggest potential for future applications, such as solution-processable molecular crystalline 2D membranes for molecular separations.

Abstract:As an emerging class of porous crystalline material, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have received considerable research interests in terms of exploring new architectures and functions. Herein, we developed an unprecedented "H-shaped" monomer, upon self-polycondensation, which facilely produced a benzoimidazole-based COF (H-BIm-COF) with a rarely reported brick-wall topology. H-BIm-COF displayed high crystallinity, nano-sized porosity, and high thermal and chemical stabilities. Interestingly, H-BIm-COF based membranes showed selective permeability towards different solvents, which related to the size and polarity of the guest molecule. Additionally, initial study suggested the COF displayed excellent rejection efficiency towards ionic dyes, for example chromium black T (99.7 %) and rhodamine B (97.3 %). This work provides insights into developing new topological COFs by designing monomers with new configurations.

Abstract:Through regulating the thermodynamic/kinetic growth pathways, a controlled self‐assembly strategy for precise synthesis of organic cocrystals with desired morphologies is demonstrated. The comparable π–π interaction along [011] and charge‐transfer (CT) interaction along [100] facilitate the formation of microplates under low solution concentration, while strong CT interaction along [100] leads to the fabrication of microwires under high concentration. Precise fabrication of organic micro/nanostructures with regular morphology has gained a considerable concern in developing high‐performance optoelectronic devices, which is still a huge challenge to realize tunable morphology without the dependence on molecule packing arrangement. Herein, a thermodynamic/kinetic controlled self‐assembly for triphenylene‐7,7,8,8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane (TP‐TCNQ) cocrystal, with well‐defined microwires and microplates based on the same crystal structure, is proposed. With the low solution concentration of C = 5 mm, the comparable growth rates along [011] driven by π–π interaction and along [100] driven by charge‐transfer (CT) interaction facilitate the formation of thermodynamically favored shape of microplates. In contrast, the prominent CT interaction along [100] leads to the construction of microwires at kinetic state under high‐concentration solution of C = 10 mm. Furthermore, the prepared TP‐TCNQ microwires and microplates demonstrate isotropic photonic transmissions with the low optical loss coefficient of 0.033 and 0.042 dB μm−1, respectively. This strategy provides a novel avenue to finely construct the organic microcrystals with desired morphology for potential optoelectronics.

Abstract:Although the synthetic chemistry leading to interlocking molecular [ n ]catenanes of organic polyhedra ( n = 2–3) and rings ( n = 2–130) is established, the analogous chemistry that pertains to infinite three-dimensional systems ([ ∞ ]catenane) remains undeveloped. We report a series of [ ∞ ]catenane covalent organic frameworks (termed catena-COFs). These were synthesized by linking 4,4′-(1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)dibenzaldehyde to either of tris-(4-aminophenyl)-amine, -methane or -methanol through imine condensation. These combinations give discrete adamantane-like polyhedra, catenated by virtue of the copper(I) ions templating a mutually embracing arrangement of PDBs (points-of-catenation), which ultimately results in infinite catena-COF-805, 806 and 807. The crystal structures of these COFs obtained from electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were determined to be isoreticular and to adopt the bor-y structure type.
Tuning the Topology of Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks via Steric Control: From pts to Unprecedented ljh

Abstract:Whether or not the topology of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) can be tuned via steric control remains a big question and has never been reported. Herein, we describe the designed synthesis of two highly crystalline 3D COFs (3D-TPB-COF-OMe and 3D-TPB-COF-Ph), through the polycondensation of tetra(p-aminophenyl)methane and methoxy- or phenyl- substituted 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)benzene on the 3- and 6-positions. Amazingly, by using the continuous rotation electron diffraction technique, 3D-TPB-COF-OMe is determined to have a 5-fold interpenetrated structure with a reported pts net, while 3D-TPB-COF-Ph adopts an unprecedented self-penetrated ljh topology (ljh = Luojia Hill) that does not exist in the database of ToposPro. Therefore, by altering the substituents from methoxy to phenyl groups, the topology of designed 3D COFs changes accordingly, and a rare net is now available. Abstract:Multicomponent crystalline heterostructures are a powerful approach to integrate different functional materials into the ordered structures. Here we describe three-dimensional spherical assembly of binary organic solids that consist of electron donor and acceptor molecules. A mechanistic study of heterostructure formation reveals that the dewetting and drying-mediated assembly processes are responsible for the spherical crystallite formation. The assembled spherical heterostructures are highly tunable, crystalline and chemically stable, exhibiting phase separation controlled optoelectronic behavior. This simple, generalizable three-dimensional assembly can be modified for the formation of ordered functional organic multicomponent heterostructures for emerging applications.
