Abstract:A highly selective and sensitive chromogenic and fluorogenic dual signal responding fluoride-sensor 1, comprising a Ru-bipy fluorophore (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone chromophore was prepared and spectroscopically characterized. Uv-vis titrations with F- revealed the appearance of a new intense absorption band centered at about 580 nm which was accompanied by a dramatic change in color from yellow to magenta, with the association constant logK being 6.71 +/- 0.04. Fluorescence spectra showed that upon addition of F-, the emission intensities enhanced significantly without any change in the excited and emission wavelengths, suggesting a potential photoinduced electronic transfer (PET) signaling transduction mechanism. An easy-to-prepare test paper which was obtained by putting a filter paper into an acetonitrile solution of 1, can detect F- in aqueous media, indicating the potential application for detecting F- in natural aqueous environments without any spectroscopic instrumentation. Spectroscopic titrations of the free ligand were also studied for comparison.

Abstract:Here, a ratiometric fluorescent test paper for the visual and on-site determination of environmental fluoride ions was fabricated by inkjet-printing of the as-prepared "ink" onto a filter paper. The "ink" was prepared by mixing the fluoride-sensitive organic probe (C-TIPS) with red CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in an optimal proportion. The designed fluorescent fluoride probe shows a turn-on effect in the presence of fluoride ions. With the aid of thee red fluorescence of CdTe QDs, the test paper exhibited a distinguishable fluorescence color change from red to purple to blue under a UV lamp. The as-prepared ratiometric-fluorescent test paper displayed a superior sensitivity and visual effectiveness to quantify fluoride ions, with a detection limit of 0.285 mu M which is lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) defined limit (79 mu M). Moreover, the test paper is highly applicable for the detection of fluoride ions in natural waters in a very simple, cost efficient and on-site way.

Abstract:Fluorine as an essential trace element for human body, plays a vital role in human health. However, excessive intake, mainly through potable water, will cause adverse effects on human health. Therefore, establishing simple and effective methods for monitoring the concentration of fluorine in potable water is crucial for environmental protection and human health. In this work, a functional zirconium based MOF with excellent fluorescent detection performance was investigated. Its detection limit of F - was 0.743 ppm in aqueous solution. Based on the excellent sensitivity, a fluorescent test paper which fabricated by in situ growth of zirconium based MOF onto the surface of filter paper was following investigated. The result manifested that the test paper had an effective detection of fluorine.

Abstract:In recent years, the wide application of fluoride materials has grown rapidly, therefore excessive discharge in the surrounding environment, especially in drinking water and organic effluent, has become a potential hazard to humans, and has even resulted in fluorosis disease. The development of a highly effective and convenient method to recognize fluoride anions in surrounding environments seems necessary and urgent. Among which, the development of a colorimetric and fluorescence fluoride chemosensor with obvious color changing allowing for naked-eye detection with high sensitivity and selectivity is more interesting and challenging. In this minireview, current novel colorimetric and fluorescence chemosensors for fluoride anions by hydrogen-bond interaction are introduced, including obvious color changing by naked-eye detection, high sensitivity and selectivity, non-pollution and fluoride extraction ability, aqueous detection, and other additional functions. Finally, the perspective of the fluoride chemosensor design concept and potential evolution trends are pointed out.

Abstract:The instant and on-site detection of trace aqueous fluoride ions is still a challenge for environmental monitoring and protection. This work demonstrates a new analytical method and its utility of a paper sensor for visual detection of F(-) on the basis of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between photoluminescent graphene oxide (GO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through the formation of cyclic esters between phenylborinic acid and diol. The fluorescence of GO was quenched by the AgNPs, and trace F(-) can recover the fluorescence of the quenched photoluminescent GO. The increase in fluorescence intensity is proportional to the concentration of F(-) in the range of 0.05-0.55 nM, along with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 9.07 pM. Following the sensing mechanism, a paper-based sensor for the visual detection of aqueous F(-) has been successfully developed. The paper sensor showed high sensitivity for aqueous F(-), and the LOD could reach as low as 0.1 μM as observed by the naked eye. The very simple and effective strategy reported here could be extended to the visual detection of a wide range of analytes in the environment by the construction of highly efficient FRET nanoprobes.

Abstract:Highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probes with a quaternary ammonium moiety have been rationally designed and developed for fast and sensitive fluorescence detection of fluoride ion (F(-) from NaF, not TBAF) in aqueous solution and living cells. With the sequestration effect of quaternary ammonium, the detection time was less than 2 min and the detection limit of fluoride ion was as low as 0.57 ppm that is among the lowest detection limits in aqueous solutions of many fluoride fluorescence probes in the literature.

Abstract:The extensive use of fluoride in agriculture, industry, medicine, and daily necessities has raised growing concerns about fluoride residue. To date, real-time visual detection and efficient removal of fluoride ions from water remain greatly desirable. Herein, nano-CAU-10-NH2@RhB is introduced as a ratiometric fluorescent probe and efficient scavenger for the intelligent detection and removal of fluoride ions. CAU-10-NH2@RhB is readily obtained through one-pot synthesis and exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for real-time fluoride ion detection, with a naked-eye distinguishable color change from pink to blue. A portable device for point-of-care testing was developed based on color hue analysis readout using a smartphone. A quantitative response was achieved across a wide concentration range, with a detection limit of 54.2 nM. Adsorption experiments suggest that nano-CAU-10-NH2@RhB serves as an efficient fluoride ion scavenger, with a fluoride adsorption capacity of 49.3 mg/g. Moreover, the mechanistic study revealed that hydrogen bonds formed between fluoride ions and amino groups of CAU-10-NH2@RhB are crucial for the detection and adsorption of fluoride ions. This analysis platform was also used for point-of-care quantitative visual detection of fluoride ions in food, water, and toothpaste.

Abstract:Herein, we report a single nanofluorophore "off-on" probe based on the unique fluoride-boron interaction to achieve the visual determination of fluoride ions in environmental water. Red quantum dots (QDs) were modified using 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) to form a stable standard emission probe, and reaction of the probe with catechol formed a five-membered cyclic borate ester, which led to the quenching of the fluorescence emission. The designed nanofluorophore probe showed a turn-on effect in the presence of fluoride ions due to the five-membered cyclic borate ester being transformed into a trifluoroborate, with breakage of the B-O bonds and removal of the catechol from the QDs. The prepared nanofluorophore probe displayed a high sensitivity for the quantification of fluoride ions with a naked eye visual detection limit of 0.4 μM, which was much lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defined limit (37 μM). Furthermore, the probe displayed an effective application for the detection of fluoride ions in environmental samples such as tap water and lake water. The very simple method reported here could be extended to the visual detection of a wide range of analysis assays in natural samples.

Abstract:Based on coumarin dye, a novel colorimetric and fluorescent dual-modal chemosensor (CL) was designed and synthesized for fluoride ion (F-) sensing. The spectroscopic response of CL towards F-could be attributed to the F--triggered multi-hydrogen bond interaction. Job's plot analysis indicates that CL forms a 1: 1 stoichiometry complex with F-. The association con-stant (K-a) was evaluated using the Benesi-Hildebrand method and was found to be 1.986 x 10(3) M-1. The fluorescence detection limit for F-was estimated to be 1.5 ppb based on a 3 sigma/slope. CL could be easily prepared as CL-coated chromatography plates to "naked-eye" detect of F-in different natural water samples at a low detection limit of 1 ppm.

Abstract:A novel fluorogenic receptor 1 was prepared by the reaction of thiosemicarbazide with 1-naphthaldehyde. Based on in situ-formed 1–Fe(III) complexes having the specific binding affinity for F− anions, this sensory system allows rapid recognition and quantitative detection of fluoride in neutral aqueous media in an ‘off–on’ fashion. The fluoride measurement method not only exhibits a low detection limit but also has strong anti-interference ability to common coexisting ions, as evidenced by competitive experiments.

Abstract:Based on a perylene diimide derivatives(PDIs) platform, AM-PDIs was rationally designed and synthesized as a new calorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensor for naked-eye detection of fluoride ion with high selectivity over other halide ions. Addition of fluoride ion to a dichloromethane(DCM) solution of AM-PDIs resulted in an obvious color change (from red to blackish green) because of a large red shift (151 nm) in absorption. The recognition mechanism was attributed to the intermolecular proton transfer between a hydrogen atom on the amide N position of sensor and the fluoride anion. Abstract:The development of a rapid and sensitive method for the detection of fluoride ion (F-) in aqueous systems is of great significance for human health and environmental monitoring. In this study, a zirconium porphyrinic luminescent metal-organic framework (LMOF), PCN-222, was employed as a novel fluorescent probe for the ultrasensitive, rapid and selective detection of F- in water. The PCN-222 probe was prepared by a facile solvothermal method. It exhibited good fluorescence stability and was highly stable in water. The fluorescence emission of PCN-222 could be effectively and selectively quenched by F- due to the strong coordination affinity of F- to the zirconium clusters in PCN-222. The proposed fluorescence method for F- detection based on PCN-222 probe afforded a linear response range of 1 e20 mmol/L and a very low detection limit (0.048-0.065 mmol/L) in reference to many reported F- fluorescent probes. Moreover, a rapid response time (<10 s) was obtained due to the open and uniform pore structure of PCN-222 that allowed the fast diffusion of F- to interact with the zirconium recognition sites. Finally, the PCN-222 probe was successfully applied for the fluorescence detection of F- in real water samples. These results highlight the great application potential of LMOF in the sensing fields. Preparation of Paper-Based Fluorescent Sensors and Their Application for the Detection of Cu2+ in Water

Abstract:Excessive copper (Cu2+) causes adverse effects on human health and the ecological environment. Traditional methods for detecting Cu2+ have drawbacks such as high detection costs, complex operating conditions, and being time consuming. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop simple detection methods to better meet specific health and environment quality needs. In this work, a paper-based fluorescence sensor was prepared (herein referred to as the as-prepared method) by immersing filter paper in aqueous polyethyleneimine (PEI) solution, and its potential use in Cu2+ detection was investigated. The results showed that the as-prepared paper samples, with fluorescence properties obtained by aggregation-induced luminescence of PEI, have selective recognition of Cu2+ based on the internal filtration effect, and the lowest detection limit is 0.03 μM. In addition, the relative error of this method is in the range of 1.80~2.23%, which is relatively comparable to the national standard method (0.63~630 μM), demonstrating high accuracy. Therefore, paper-based sensors with a simple preparation method have potential applications in the detection of Cu2+ in water.

Abstract:The dimeric azulene boronate ester 1 was designed and synthesized as a potential chemosensor for fluoride ion. UV-Vis titration analysis shows that with the enhancement of fluoride equivalents, the absorption peaks have been decreasing at 408 and 434 nm, while the peak at 370 nm has been increasing remarkably. Job's plot proves that the formation of a 1:2 [1.2F]2(-) species is responsible for the observed absorbance enhancement in THE solution. Furthermore, this probe displays a quick response for fluoride ion and the color is from light green to yellow in solution, exhibiting a high selectivity and excellent stability. It is noted that a test paper for effective detection of fluoride has been prepared by using dimeric azulene boronate ester as a colorimetric chemosensor without any spectroscopic instrumentation. In addition, TD-DFT calculation has also been carried out in aqueous media for comparison.

Abstract:Two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons bearing trimethylsilylethynyl groups were designed and synthesized as new colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probes for fluoride anion. Both probes exhibit high specific selectivity and sensitivity for F− compared to other anions. When F− is added to the solution of the probe, the trimethylsilyl substituents can be removed immediately, and the color of the solution changes from yellow to colorless under ambient light. Moreover, test papers based on the probes are prepared, which could be applied to detect F− in organic phase.
A reversible fluorescent sensor for continuous detection of fluoride ion and trace water in chemical reagents

Abstract:Continuously monitorable fluorescence sensors can provide fast, immediate, in-field detection of analytes without tedious process. A simple fluorescent sensor (BN) constructed from naphthol Schiff base was developed for reversible monitoring of F- and trace water. Sensor BN showed specific selectivity toward F- over other anions giving rise to a fluorescence "turn-on" response. After added F-, the BN solution caused a dramatically observable color change from non-fluorescence to blue-green, and the limit of detection reached 78.5 nM. The Job's and 1H NMR analysis confirmed that the recognition mechanism could be concluded to F- caused deprotonation of sensor BN by hydrogen bonding interaction. Moreover, the deprotonated form BN∙F obtained by using F- was acted as excellent sensitivity sensor for trace water detection with instant response through reprotonation. After addition of trace water, the emission color and spectral signal of BN∙F reverted to the original BN sate with the limit of detection of 0.0011 %. The reversible detection characteristic was conducive to the development of an inkless writing and encryption device. And importantly, BN∙F was utilized as a promising fluorescent sensor in the quantitative determination of water content in routinely chemical reagents.
