Abstract:Herein, an extremely simple l-alanine-assisted pyrolysis method was proposed for the construction of a novel hierarchically porous hybrid of Fe4N-Fe supported on N-doped carbon nanobelts and Ketjen black carbon (denoted as Fe4N-Fe@N-C/N-KB). It has been found that the participation of l-alanine in pyrolysis can dramatically increase the total pyridinic-N/graphitic-N content in Fe4N-Fe@N-C/N-KB, which is peculiarly conducive to the enhancement of ORR performance. The in-site formation of the Fe4N-Fe heterojunction via the thermal reduction and decomposition of Fe3N as well as the introduction of cheap KB can significantly improve the ORR performance. As a result, the activity, durability, and methanol tolerance of this hybrid are comprehensively better than those of commercial 20 wt % Pt/C, promising future applications in practical devices. Density functional theory calculations disclose that the highly improved ORR activity of Fe4N-Fe@N-C/N-KB also benefits from the favorable electron penetration and excellent electronic conductivity between the Fe4N nanoparticles and the N-incorporated carbon frameworks.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high reaction area (HRA) electrode with finely dispersed electrocatalysts supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for high performance micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC). Ionomer Nafion ® loading by spin-coating on the catalysts was in-detail investigated for performance enhancement in anodic half-cell. Abstract:Designing catalysts with multi catalytic sites is considered as a promising way to solve the sluggish kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and improve the performance of electricity generation in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, a novel hybrid porous electrocatalyst derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is successfully synthesized, which combines graphene-carbon coated CoCu alloy nanoparticles grown in vertical alignment on carbon nanofibers (CoCu@N-CNFs). Apart from this, CoCu@N-CNFs containing both Co-Nx and Cu-Nx coordination environments enhance oxophilicity, thereby boosting the intrinsic activity of ORR. As expected, CoCu@N-CNFs-1:1 exhibits a superior ORR half-wave potential (−0.545 V vs. Hg/HgCl2) and high limiting current density (10.09 mA cm−2), exceeding that of 20% Pt/C. Furthermore, the MFC equipped with CoCu@N-CNFs-1:1 catalyst achieves maximum power density and coulomb efficiency, which are 102% and 112% higher than Pt/C, respectively. Moreover, CoCu@N-CNFs-1:1 possesses high antibacterial capacity, inhibiting the biofouling on the cathode surface, which further ensures the effective and continuous occurrence of ORR at the triple-phase interface of MFCs.

Abstract:The development of high-performance nonprecious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions is critical for the commercialization of fuel cells. In this paper, we report a non-precious catalyst with high-performance, in which Fe and Fe3C is embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (MIL-N-CNFs) by co-electrospinning Fe-MIL and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and pyrolyzing. The mass ratio of Fe-MIL to PAN in the precursors and the pyrolysis temperature were optimized to be 1.5 and treated at 800 °C, respectively. The optimized catalyst exhibited an onset potential of 0.950 V and a half-wave potential of 0.830 V in alkaline electrolytes, thanks to the improved mass transfer kinetics in a meso-porous structure and enhanced reaction kinetics by confined Fe and Fe3C particles. Additionally, the optimized catalyst showed a better methanol tolerance than the commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C, indicating a potential application in direct methanol fuel cells. Serving as the cathode in CCM, the anion-exchange membrane fuel cell reaches a power density of 192 mW cm−2 at 428 mA cm−2 and 80 °C.

Abstract:In this study, Co-porous-g-C3N4(porous Co-Doped graphitic carbon nitride) was synthesized by a one-step calcination method successfully. Co-porous-g-C3N4 was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance, and specific surface area determination. The Photo- Fenton-like system was successfully constructed under the condition of coexistence of Co-porous-g-C3N4 and H2O2. The synergistic effect of Fenton-like system and photo-catalysis was realized. Through the optimization of experimental conditions, the best photocatalytic performance of this heterogeneous reaction system was achieved. The degradation rate of MB (methylene blue, 40 mg/L) could reach 98.3% at 90 min. Co-porous-g-C3N4 had photocatalytic degradation activity for different organic pollutants and had wonderful recyclability and stability. The main degradation effect was attributed to �O2- which could be generated through two channels in the Photo- Fenton-like system. Moreover, the rate of photogenerated electron-hole complexation could be decreased due to the reaction of low-valent cobalt and photoelectrons in this heterogeneous reaction system.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) supported by a covalent organic framework (COF) exhibited a remarkably catalytic performance towards organic pollutants, while the application is limited by the recovery and reuse from the mixture due to the size of Au at the nanoscale. Herein, Au NPs were in situ reduced on the surface of sulfhydryl groups functionalized new COF with NaBH4, followed by the deposition on polydopamine modified micron-sized porous spherical montmorillonite (SMt) to construct a spherical @Au NPs heterostructure. SMt was used here due to its excellent adsorption ability towards methylene blue (MB), increasing the concentration of MB near NPs, thus accelerating the catalytic reaction. Hence, the optimized apparent reduction rate constant (Kapp) and turnover frequency (TOF) in our experiment could reach 8.32 min−1 and 3.2 × 105 h−1, respectively, at 40 °C and pH values of 10, which is much better than the reported. Furthermore, micro-sized SMt with self-sedimentary property could be easily recovered from the mixture without any devices involved. More importantly, the granular micro-sized morphology of the SMt-based heterostructure could facile transport on the product line and reduce the fouling, facilitating mass production NPs based catalyst for application.

Abstract:The functional group -COOH on carbon fiber microcylinder electrode(CFMCE) was formed by electrochemical oxidation with cyclic voltammetry, and the Nile blue modified CFMCE was manufactured by means of electrostatic-attraction. The electrochemical behaviour of the modified electrode was studied, and its stability was discussed. The apparent standard electron transfer rate constant and charge transfer coefficient of fixed Nile blue A at various pH, and the number of H+ participating in electrode reaction were determined. The experiments indicated the modified electrode can catalyze the electrode reaction of hemoglobin at carbon fiber microcylinder electrode.

Abstract:The exploration of new energy is conducive to alleviating the excessive demand for fossil energy. Water electrolysis is a promising mean of sustainable hydrogen evolution. Herein, The Cu/NCF precursor was nitrized to prepare a nitrogen-doped carbon coated multi-component NC@NiCoCu-N/NCF composite material. There is a good synergistic interaction between Cu3N Ni4N Co2N three phases, which makes H2O decomposition and H2 release more balanced during the reaction. By adjusting the content and temperature to explore the law of change of catalyst morphology. The trapezoidal nanosheets were transformed into disordered rough coral-like nanostructure that facilitate better electrolyte penetration and provide more accessible active sites during the nitriding process. Nitrogen doped carbon can enhance the conductivity of the catalyst, ensuring that the internal active structure from the erosion of the electrolyte, improving the structural stability. Therefore, NC@NiCoCu-N/NCF composite exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution performance that the overpotentials can reach 89 mV and 131 mV under the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Chronopotentiometry shows that the catalyst continuous operate at least 48 h and still maintains excellent structural stability. This work has great significance for the development of polymetallic or multicomponent catalysts designed to accelerate the field of hydrogen energy.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials doped with nitrogen/transition metals (metal-N-C) are promising to substitute platinum (Pt) for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Metal N-C can be effectively derived from pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks but usually suffers from microscale aggregation. Herein, we report an in situ approach to anchor zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co, N-doped porous carbon on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), labeled CNTs@Co-N-PC, and investigate its performance as electrocatalysts for the ORR in alkaline medium. This strategy combines pyrolysis with acid etching of ZIF-67 to convert its Co-N-4 frames into stable and dense Co, N-doped porous carbon on the surface of MWCNTs. In the core-shell-like CNTs@Co-N-PC hybrid catalysts, the MWCNTs serving as supports effectively inhibit the aggregation of Co-N-PC and therefore guarantee sufficient active sites available for the occurrence of the ORR. Consequently, these CNTs@Co-N-PC electrocatalysts exhibit comparable activity to commercial Pt/C and are featured with favorable long-term durability and superior methanol tolerance.
Hollow silica-coated porous carbon with embedded iron oxide particles for effective methylene blue degradation

Abstract:A novel catalyst, consisting of hollow silica-coated porous carbon with embedded iron oxide particles (FeO x @C/SiO2), was synthesized by the extended Stöber method. Iron ions were incorporated in a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin in the presence of citric acid to form a template, which was then coated with a silica layer. The iron oxide-embedded porous carbon and hollow silica were simultaneously formed during calcination under N2 atmosphere. Through this process, silica endowed the iron oxide with low crystallinity and small size, resulting in a higher catalytic activity in the heterogeneous Fenton system for the decolorization of a methylene blue (MB) solution within 25 min. Moreover, the sample maintained 78.71% of its catalytic activity after three cycles.

Abstract:The synthesis of mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MCNs), especially with diameters below 200 nm remains a great challenge due to weak interactions between the carbon precursors and soft templates, as well as the uncontrollable cross-linking rate of carbon precursors. Herein, we demonstrate a simple acid-assisted, hydrothermal synthesis approach to synthesizing such uniform MCNs with well controlled diameters ranging from 20 to 150 nm under highly acidic conditions (2 M HCl). Both the carbon precursor and the template are partly protonated under such conditions and show additional Coulombic interactions with chloride ions (acts as mediators). This kind of enhanced interaction is similar to that of the "I+X-S+" mechanism in the synthesis of mesoporous metal oxide, which can effectively retard the cross-linking rate of resol molecules and avoid macroscopic phase separation during the hydrothermal synthesis. Due to their uniform spherical morphology, small diameter, and high surface areas, MCNs can be modified with Fe and N species via impregnation of cheap precursors (ferric nitrate and dicyandiamide), which are further converted into nonprecious electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions. The resulting Fe-N/MCNs exhibit high catalytic activities, long-term stability and improved methanol tolerance under alkaline conditions, which can be potentially used in direct methanol fuel cells and metal-air batteries.
Microwave-assisted synthesis and prototype oxygen reduction electrocatalyst application of N-doped carbon-coated Fe 3 O 4 nanorods

Abstract:To achieve iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–N–C) nanofibers with excellent electrocatalysis for replacing high-cost Pt-based catalysts in the cathodes of fuel cells and metal-air batteries, we have investigated and evaluated the effects of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) concentration and the proportion of iron to PAN, along with voltage and flow rate during the electrospinning process, and thus proposed three criteria to optimize these parameters for ideal nanofiber catalysts. The best half-wave potential of an optimized catalysts is 0.82 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in an alkaline medium, which reaches the best range of the non-precious-metal catalysts reported and is very close to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Furthermore, the electron-transfer number of our catalysts is superior to that of the Pt/C, indicating the catalysts undergo a four-electron process. The durability of the optimized Fe–N–C nanofibers is also better than that of the Pt/C, which is attributed to the homogeneous distribution of the active sites in our catalysts. Abstract:To rapidly obtain a stable Fe3O4@cellulose heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, a novel in situ chemical co-precipitation method was developed. Compared with mechanical activation (MA)-pretreated cellulose (MAC), MA + FeCl3 (MAFC)-pretreated cellulose (MAFCC) was more easily dissolved and uniformly distributed in NaOH/urea solvent. MAFCC and MAC solutions were used as precipitators to prepare Fe3O4@MAFCC and Fe3O4@MAC nanocomposites, respectively. MAFCC showed stronger interaction and more uniform combination with Fe(3)O(4 )nanoparticles than MAC, implying that MAFC pretreatment enhanced the accessibility, reactivity, and dissolving capacity of cellulose thus, provided reactive sites for the in situ growth of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the regenerated cellulose. Additionally, the catalytic performance of Fe3O4@MAFCC nanocomposite was evaluated by using for catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB), and Fe3O4@MAC nanocomposite and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were used for comparative studies. Fe3O4 @MAFCC nanocomposite exhibited superior catalytic activity for the degradation and mineralization of MB in practical applications. After ten cycles, the structure of Fe3O4@MAFCC nanocomposite was not significantly changed owing to the strong interaction between MAFCC and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. This study provides a green pathway to the fabrication of a stable nanocomposite catalyst with high catalytic performance and reusability for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Nanoporous carbon/graphene composites (NCGC) are synthesized via one-step hydrothermal approach combining carbonization, where phenol and formaldehyde are used as carbon sources and triblock copolymers F127 as template. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nitrogen adsorption measurements show that the synthesized NCGC samples possess high surface area over 400 m2.g-1 and mesoporous structures with interconnected pores. The electrochemical studies demonstrate that Pt catalyst with NCGC as support exhibits better eletrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation as compared to the catalyst taking widely-used VulcanXC-72 as support. In addition, the potential formation mechanism of NCGC is discussed.
