Abstract:Propionate is a kind of new,efficient and safe additive with the functions of anti mildew,anticorrosion and treatment of diseases,which is widely used in feed processing industry.Propionate is decomposed into propionic acid and mineral elements in the rumen,and propionic acid is the main active ingredient.Propionate can promote rumen development,regulate blood glucose,maintain energy balance,therefore,it has been used to treat ketosis in practice production.At present,the propionate has been studied mostly at the rumen infusion stage,and in vitro experiments are focused on the liver gluconeogenesis pathway,which revolves around energy metabolism.But there are a few researches about the effects of propionate on production performance and fermentation.With the development of study of short chain fatty acids in the medical field,it brings a new opportunity for its development in husbandry.Whether propionate has the ability to promote rumen development,alleviate inflammation and enhance immunity needed to be further explored and verified.This paper mainly introduces the metabolic pathway and the mechanism of propionate and its application value in ruminant animal nutrition,combined with the production performance and maintain health,in order to reveal its potential value and provides scientific basis for its application in ruminant.

Abstract:Guanidinoacetic acid is a kind of amino acid derivative, is also an important new nutritional feed additive, its application effect at home and abroad has been widely recognized. In this paper, from the physiological functions of guanidine acetic acid, the growth properties of cattle and sheep and cattle and sheep slaughtered on the performance and meat quality, et cetera were summarized, the guanidine acetic acid is obtained to improve ruminant production performance and slaughter performance and meat quality, but also found that for different species, the respect such as gender and age are still lack of production and machine rational research.

Abstract:In order to resistanting and improving the performance of ruminant animals,the use of antibiotics are very common,but with the public concerning about animal-derived food chemicals residue of antibiotics,the development of new safety of ruminant instead of chemical additive and additives become very essential.Including saponins,many biological active substances in regulating rumen fermentation and animal performance can replace chemical additives.Because of the chemical structure and saponins,additive amount and diet composition,to promote saponins,many studies need to saponins chemical structure and diet nutrition and systematic research of ruminal microbes.The present paper reviews and discusses the effects andmode of action of saponins on microbial community and fermentation in the rumen,and ruminantperformance.

Abstract:The review discussed the application status of three feed additives from the point of view of the reduction of ruminal methanogenesis.Yeast has been commercially accepted and has an effect on ruminal methane production.Organic acids has been well verified experimentally to decrease methanogenesis but has not yet to enter widespread practical usage.Plant extracts have not been substantively verified although theoretically sound.In fact,the ultimate success of any of these approaches on reducing methanogenesis will rest not only on their biological efficacy but also with their economic impact.

Abstract:Cellulose decomposing bacteria as a new green feed additive can increase the conversion rate of roughage, improve the rumen environment and performance of anmial, and supplies a considerable number of feed resource to livestock breeding. Abstract:Probiotics act positively on rumen feed digestion and ruminant production as feed additive, these additives are diverse and exerting their action through different mechanisms. This review gives an overview of the probiotics feed additive and summarizes the current status of lactic acid bacteria, yeast and Bacillus which are the most common used feed additive to improve milk performance and health in dairy cattle. This yields a comprehensive idea of the reviewed studies on lactic acid bacteria, yeast and Bacillus to enhance further research in dairy cow industry.

Abstract:The research on regulation of gut health of livestock has been focused on in recent years.As novel prebiotics, arabinoxylan (AX) and arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (AXOS) show better proliferation effects on Bifidobacterium than fructooligosaccharides and other oligosaccharides.Besides, AX and AXOS can efficiently regulate the health of hindgut (colon and cecum) via fermentation in the hindgut to produce non-branched short chain fatty acids and inhibit protein fermentation to lower the production of toxic substance (phenol, ammonia and so on).Structural differently AX and AXOS have different fermentation properties and can produce synergistic effect.This paper reviewed the research progress of prebiotic effects of AX and AXOS in recent years,which provides a theoretical basis and instruction for their application in livestock industry.[Chinese Journal of

Abstract:Background Ruminal methane (CH 4 ) emissions from ruminants not only pollute the environment and exacerbate the greenhouse effect, but also cause animal energy losses and low production efficiency. Consequently, it is necessary to find ways of reducing methane emissions in ruminants. Studies have reported that feed additives such as nitrogen-containing compounds, probiotics, prebiotics, and plant extracts significantly reduce ruminant methane; however, systematic reviews of such studies are lacking. The present article summarizes research over the past five years on the effects of nitrogen-containing compounds, probiotics, probiotics, and plant extracts on methane emissions in ruminants. The paper could provide theoretical support and guide future research in animal production and global warming mitigation. Methods This review uses the Web of Science database to search keywords related to ruminants and methane reduction in the past five years, and uses Sci-Hub, PubMed, etc. as auxiliary searchers. Read, filter, list, and summarize all the retrieved documents, and finally complete this article. Results Most of the extracts can not only significantly reduce CH 4 greenhouse gas emissions, but they will not cause negative effects on animal and human health either. Therefore, this article reviews the mechanisms of CH 4 production in ruminants and the application and effects of N-containing compounds, probiotics, prebiotics, and plant extracts on CH 4 emission reduction in ruminants based on published studies over the past 5 years. Conclusion Our review provides a theoretical basis for future research and the application of feed additives in ruminant CH 4 emission reduction activities.

Isolation and functional analysis of acid-producing bacteria from bovine rumen

Abstract:Ruminants such as cattle rely mainly on microbes in the rumen to digest cellulose and hemicellulose from forage, and the digestion products are mainly absorbed and utilized by the host in the form of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This study aimed to isolate acid-producing strains from the cattle rumen and investigate their functions. A total of 980 strains of acid-producing bacteria were isolated from cattle rumen contents using a medium supplemented with bromocresol green. Combined with the test of acid production ability and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology, five strains were selected based on their ability to produce relatively high levels of acid, including Bacillus pumillus , Enterococcus hirae, Enterococcus faecium , and Bacillus subtilis . Sheep were treated by gavage with a mixed bacterial suspension. The results showed that mixed bacteria significantly increased the body weight gain and feed conversion rate of sheep. To investigate the function of acid-producing bacteria in sheep, we used 16S rDNA sequencing technology to analyze the rumen microbes of sheep. We found that mixed bacteria changed the composition and abundance of sheep rumen bacteria. Among them, the abundance of Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota , and Proteobacteria was significantly increased, and the abundance of Firmicutes was significantly decreased, indicating that the changes in gut microbiota changed the function of the sheep rumen. The acid-producing bacteria isolated in this study can effectively promote the growth of ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, and can be used as additives to improve breeding efficiency, which lays a foundation for subsequent research on probiotics.

Abstract:Ever since the European ban on use of in-feed antibiotics in food animals, the search for alternate antibiotic-free growth promoter is undertaken worldwide. There are few alternatives such as probiotics, pre-biotics, phytochemicals, enzymes and organic acids. Among these alternatives, the organic acids or simply acidifiers play an important role in gut health in animals. The acidifiers could be used to favourably manipulate the intestinal microbial populations and improve the immune response, hence perform an activity similar to antibiotics in food animals in countering pathogenic bacteria. Acidifiers also improve the digestibility of nutrients and increase the absorption of minerals. The incorporation of organic acids also leads to thinning of the intestinal lining which facilitates better absorption of nutrients and its efficient utilization. However, their effect will not be similar among all types of organic acids as their mechanism of activity is based on its pKa value. Moreover, there are claims about the neutralization of acids by the secretion of bicarbonates in the initial part of intestine, reactivity with metallic items in feed mills and reduced palatability due its bitter taste demands non-reactive and targeted delivery for better performance. Currently, coated salts of acidifiers are available commercially for use in food animals especially pigs and poultry. The present review highlights the role of different acidifiers in livestock nutrition with their potent applications in improving nutrient digestibility, mineral utilization, meat quality, enhancing immunity, antimicrobial effects in countering pathogenic bacteria, boosting performance and production, and thus safeguarding health of livestock animals and poultry.

Abstract:In order to achieve the sustainable development of society and reduce environmental footprint of chemical industry, some cleaner and greener production methods are still needed. Microbial fermentation has shown great potentials for sustainable production of chemicals, which can convert renewable resources into different products under mild conditions. Particularly, organic acids production has become a highly competitive and rapidly developed field, as they show broad applications in food, cosmetic and medical areas. Especially, yeasts have shown many advantages in organic acids production especially at high osmotic pressure or low pH. Accordingly, this review will discuss the latest progress of engineered yeasts as cell factories for organic acids production. Different strategies for improvement of organic acids production will be introduced, and future perspectives will also be proposed.

Abstract:Animal production depends on nutrient utilization and if done there is an accelerated momentum towards growth with a low cost to feed ratio Public concern over the consumption of pork with antibiotic residues of the animals fed with antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) has paved the way to use other additives like herbs and their products, probiotics, prebiotics etc. Numerous feed additives are in vogue for achieving this target and one such classical example is the usage of organic acids and their salts. Usage of organic acids was in progress for over four decades. Early weaned piglets are (3–4 weeks age) exposed to stress with a reduced feed intake, little or no weight gain. This post weaning lag period is due to a limited digestive and absorptive capacity due to insufficient production of hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzymes and sudden changes in feed consistency and intake. Lowering dietary pH by weak organic acids was found to overcome these problems. The main activity of organic acids is associated with a reduction in gastric pH converting the inactive pepsinogen to active pepsin for effective protein hydrolysis. Organic acids are both bacteriostatic and bactericidal. Lactic acid has been reported to reduce gastric pH and delay the multiplication of an enterotoxigenic E. coli. These acids are the intermediary products in Kreb’s cycle and thus act as an energy source preventing the tissue breakdown resulting from gluconeogenesis and lipolysis. Excretion of supplemental minerals and nitrogen are minimized with organic acids as these form complexes with minerals and aids for their bio-availability. Short chain fatty cids like acetic, propionic and n-butyric acid produced by microbial fermentation of dietary fibre in the large intestines may increase the proliferation of epithelial cells and have stimulatory effects on both endocrine and exocrine pancreatic secretions in pigs. Organic acids also enhances apparent total tract digestibility and improves growth performance. It is concluded that organic acids and their salts increase the protein utilization especially in weaner pigs and improves production indices.
