Abstract:The fact that web-building spiders have been found in almost all the families of spiders,which indicates that the non-web-building may evolve from web-building spiders.Webs are used to capture prey,therefore the structure and mechanical properties of the webs can affect the efficiency of prey capture and foraging investment.Under different conditions,spiders may change structure and mechanical properties of their webs to adjust foraging strategy and keep their webs intact.Because of the special status in web evolution and the simple and regular structure,orb-web is by far the best of all web types.This article takes orb-web as a typical example to review the adaptation of structure and mechanical property of webs under different conditions.
