Abstract:As natural tracers, stable isotopes have been extensively used in plant physiological, ecological and environmental research. Recently, animal physiological ecologists have also applied stable isotope techniques to study plantanimal relationships. The isotopic compositions of animal body generally reflect and integrate their diets over a time period ranging from hours to years to the lifetime of an individual. When animal living habitat changes or animals move to a new environment, the animal isotopic compositions will shift accordingly. Thus, stable isotope signatures of an animal can truly reflect its food sources, habitat, distribution and movement patterns during a given time period. Moreover, by analyzing animal-tissue isotopic compositions at different temporal scales, we can improve our understanding of animal adaptation to environmental changes. Stable isotope technique also provides an ideal tool to study animal foodweb relationship and community structure because of isotopic fractionation during the processes of nutrient assimilation by animals. Stable isotope technique can continuously measure animal trophic position in a foodweb, which can eventually reveal the predator-prey relationship and its role in determining matter balance and energy flow in the entire ecosystem. Stable isotope technique has been one of the most important and efficient tools in studying plant-animal relationship. In this paper, we first review recent advances in the application of stable isotope techniques to plant-animal relationship research then evaluate their advantages and disadvantages, and finally discuss some future directions associated with stable isotope applications to plant-animal relationship research.
Present Status and Application Perspectives of Stable Isotopes in Coastal Wetland Ecosystem Research: A Review

Abstract:The coastal wetland ecosystems in the ecotones of terrestrial and marine systems have unique ecological characteristics, high ecosystem service values, and plenty of natural resources, but are severely impacted by human activities. Stable isotopes, as natural tracers, have become the important tools in coastal wetland ecological and environmental research. This paper reviewed the applications of stable isotopes in researching the food sources and food web structures of wetland animals, the water sources and water use efficiency of coastal wetland plants, and the potential responses of coastal ecosystems to the environmental pollution, biological invasion, elevated CO2 concentration, and human activities. The deficiencies in the applications of stable isotopes in researching coastal wetland ecosystem, such as the sample treatment and trophic enrichment measurement in food web study, and the water extraction method and the selection of instruments in water source research were discussed, and some future directions in the applications of stable isotopes in coastal wetland ecosystem research, including the assessment of wetland ecological restoration and the carbon cycling and greenhouse gases emission were proposed.

Abstract:This paper described the application of stable hydrogen,carbon and oxygen isotopes techniques in tracing sources of plant water and water use efficiency. Since the process that plant roots uptake water is non-fractionating,plant xylem water has the same composition of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes as soil water utilized by the plant. By analyzing the composition of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of plant xylem water and potential sources of water,we could quantitatively determine the contributions of the sources to plants. For the study of water use efficiency,there were many researches showed that the composition of stable carbon isotopes of leaves can be an indirect indicator of plant water use efficiency. Photosynthesis is one of the most significant processes of carbon isotope fractionation in nature. So,stable carbon isotopes techniques had become the best way to study the long-term water use efficiency of plant leaves presently. As a safe tracer material,stable isotopes technique will help people to understand the plant's ecophysiological process. Anyway,with the continuous improvement of techniques,stable isotope techniques will be widely used in many areas of ecology.

Abstract:Stable isotope technique is important for understanding the structure and function of soil food web, which is considered as a belowground black box. We reviewed typical application cases of stable isotope techniques in the research of soil food webs, including to determine food sources and feeding preferences of soil fauna by using isotopes, and to analyze the trophic structure of soil food webs through isotope fractionation effects during the process of feeding and nutrient sequestration by soil fauna. Additionally, stable isotope techniques could reveal the role of soil biota at different trophic levels within soil food web in ecosystem matter and energy flow, which favored to carry out accurate and efficient research on the contribution of soil food webs to soil carbon and nitrogen cycling process and the corresponding influence mechanism. We further put forward the limitations of current stable isotope techniques and the future development directions.

Abstract:Real-time tracking of single-cell plant metabolism with stable isotope (SIP) and micro-Raman has enhanced the understanding of photosynthetic functional reactions attributed to CO2 utilization. For instance, a Haematococcus lacustris cell was cultured with different levels of 13CO2 isotope substitution (1,2) for tracking its astaxanthin accumulation by micro-Raman (3,4). Raman-SIP has shown high accuracy using scatterplots between 13C and 12C Raman intensities during its 10-day evolution (5). Therefore, this technology has promise for future applications. Abstract:This is an eclectic review and analysis of contemporary and promising stable isotope methodologies to study the biology and ecology of arthropods. It is augmented with literature from other disciplines, indicative of the potential for knowledge transfer. It is demonstrated that stable isotopes can be used to understand fundamental processes in the biology and ecology of arthropods, which range from nutrition and resource allocation to dispersal, food‐web structure, predation, etc. It is concluded that falling costs and reduced complexity of isotope analysis, besides the emergence of new analytical methods, are likely to improve access to isotope technology for arthropod studies still further. Stable isotopes pose no environmental threat and do not change the chemistry or biology of the target organism or system. These therefore represent ideal tracers for field and ecophysiological studies, thereby avoiding reductionist experimentation and encouraging more holistic approaches. Considering (i) the ease with which insects and other arthropods can be marked, (ii) minimal impact of the label on their behaviour, physiology, and ecology, and (iii) environmental safety, we advocate more widespread application of stable isotope technology in arthropod studies and present a variety of potential uses.

Application of stable isotope technique in the study of plant water use

Abstract:It has seen an increasing number of studies in plant ecological research using stable isotope techniques during the past two decades. Applications and advances of stable isotopes of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in plant-water relations have been briefly summarized. Studies on hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios of xylem water in plants provide new information on plant water sources, competition for water among different functional types, hydraulic lift by deep root plants, and rainwater use patterns by plants under natural conditions. Analyses of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in tree rings have the potential to detect long-term patterns of plant water use. Stable carbon isotope discrimination provides a useful measure of integrated carbon-water balance in plants, and is generally correlated with plant water use efficiency. Carbon isotope discrimination changes with habitats, showing an increase from cool moist to hot dry conditions. Carbon isotope values in different plant tissues/organs can be used to examine plant water use strategies across different temporal scales. Recently, the isotopic values of leaf water, water vapor from leaf surfaces, atmospheric water vapor, and the sources of water taken up by plants have been used to estimate the proportions of plant transpiration and evaporation in water vapor efflux from an ecosystem. Stable isotope techniques play a critical role in tracing the movement of water along the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum.

Abstract:As a main life element, carbon plays important role in the matter cycling in soil-plant system. Stable carbon isotope 13C has been widely used in the study of carbon cycling in soil-plant system, due to its safe, no pollution, and easy to be handled. Through the analysis of both natural and labeled 13C organic matter in soil-plant system, a better understanding of the mechanisms of photosynthesis, the distribution of photosynthates in plant-soil system, the fate of plant litter, and the source of new carbon in soil could be achieved. In this paper, the applications of stable carbon isotope technique in the researches of photosynthesis, reconstruction of paleoclimate, turnover of soil organic matter, and interactions between plants and rhizosphere microorganisms were briefly summarized, and the perspectives of the application of stable carbon isotope technique were also discussed, based on the issues existed in current researches.

Abstract:As global change becomes a more important research topic, scientists tried different ways on various geologic records in their research. This paper introduces and reviews the organic carbon isotope method used to trace environmental change, including its mechanism, research objects, obtained results and problems.It is considered that ()~(12)C prefers to enrich in C—H bond rather than in C—O bond, causing much lower negative δ~(13)C for biotic matter or organic carbon than that for inorganic carbon. Difference in photosynthesis distinguishes plants into three groups with distinctive δ~(13)C, i.e. C_3, C_4 and CAM. The C_3 plants have δ~(13)C=-20‰～-32‰,average -28‰ and the C_4 plants have ()~(13)C=-9‰～-17‰,average -14‰. Climate affects the style and strength of photosynthesis, causing distinctive development of plant group in unique environment with distinctive total organic δ~(13)C value. The difference in δ~(13)C of total plants can further result in local characteristic δ~(13)C of animal fossils on the biological chain, such as fossil teeth, and even characteristic inorganic δ~(13)C. Therefore,carbon-isotopic study of biotic chains and their ramifications or products is an effective way to understand local or temporal environments. Accordingly, the geologic records are divided into two large classes, i.e. organic and inorganic records. Organic records include fossil plants,such as tree rings, fossil animals,such as teeth, continental sedimentary organic matter,such as coal, marine sedimentary organic matter and soils (ramification of biotic matter). These research records have been used successfully to trace environmental changes of various aims. The authors believe that organic carbon isotopic study will play a more important role in revealing significant mass extinction, finding oldest C4 plants, understanding origin of earliest life on earth, verifying the existence of extraterrestrial life and determining the relation between organic matter and mineral resources.More attention will be paid to the detail of fractionation of carbon isotopes during carbon cycling. Obviously, complexity of these problems needs the inter-discipline collaboration.

Abstract:The study on potassium isotopes( 41 K/ 39 K, usually expressed as δ 41 K) can be tracked back to the 1930s.However, due to the limitation of the low analytical precision at that time, no obvious breakthrough had been made in the study of potassium isotopes for a long time. With the rapid development of mass spectrometry analytical technology during the early 21st century, especially after the application of collision reaction cell technology into the multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry（MC-ICP-MS）, the analytical precision of potassium isotopes was greatly improved（up to 0.06‰）. Thus, the potassium isotope study is once again widely concerned by researchers in the field of geology. In this paper, we have systematically introduced the latest research achievements in fields of the analytical techniques, main reservoirs compositions and fractionation mechanism of potassium isotopes, and have elaborated in detail the latest progresses of potassium isotopes in studies of continental weathering intensity, petrogenesis, hydrothermal fluid and mineralization processes, and planetary origin. In general, although the application of potassium isotopes in the study of high temperature geochemistry is still in its infancy, it can be predicted that potassium isotopes will have more extensive applications in studying the paleo-environment, paleo-climate, diagenetic and metallogenic processes as well as the crust-mantle material circulation in the future.

Abstract:The trophic dynamics of wetland organisms is the basis of assessing wetland structure and function. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen have been widely applied to identify trophic relationships in food source, food composition and food web transport in wetland ecosystem studies. This paper provided an overall review about the current methodology of isotope mixing model and trophic level in wetland ecosystems, and discussed the standards of trophic fractionation and baseline. Moreover, we characterized the typical food sources and isotopic compositions of wetland ecosystems, summarized the food sources in different trophic levels of herbivores, omnivores and carnivores based on stable isotopic analyses. We also discussed the limitations of stable isotopes in tra-cing food sources and in constructing food webs. Based on the current results, development trends and upcoming requirements, future studies should focus on sample treatment, conservation and trophic enrichment measurement in the wetland food web, as well as on combing a variety of methodologies including traditional stomach stuffing, molecular markers, and multiple isotopes.

Abstract:Calcium isotope,one of non -traditional stable isotopes,has been a research hotspot in isotope geochemistry field since the last decade.Calcium isotope ratios are widely measured by TIMS or MC-ICP-MS,and are expressed as δ44/40Ca or δ44/42Ca respectively.Variations of δ44/40Ca in nature are mainly from -2.0‰ to 2.0‰,spanning only a limited range of 4.0‰ .The hypotheses of kinetic and equilibrium fractionation can interpret some of calcium isotope fractionation observations,but more work is needed to better understand the fractionation mechanism.Up to now the geological application of calcium isotope includes:(1)Paleoceanography temperature reconstruction based on δ44/40Ca of planktonic foraminifera G.sacculifer;(2) Geochemical cycling of calcium in ocean;(3)Estimation of pCO2 in terms of seawater calcium concentration.

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometry is the study of mass balance of multiple chemical elements in ecological ecosystems:it analyzes the constraints and consequences of these mass balances during ecosystem processes such as competition,predation,parasitism,and mutualisms,based on general laws of physics,chemistry,and biology.At present,C:N:P stoichiometry has been incorporated successfully into many levels of biology from molecular,cellular,individuals,population and communities to ecosystem and globe.Thus,ecologists have become aware that stoichiometry could provide a new tool to study ecology in most ecosystems.Along with this trend,C:N:P stoichiometry is actively used in ecological interactions since C,N and P are the three most important elements during ecological interactions.This article reviews the application of C:N:P stoichiometry to the studies of ecological problems at different levels,including species,community and ecosystem.Meanwhile,we also put forward some perspectives for future research to be conducted with an aim to promote this discipline of research in the world.

Abstract:Trophic relationships between species in ecosystems are characterized by food webs. However, there is less research on the differences in food web characteristics at larger spatial scales. This study discusses the spatial variations in food web structures across 13 freshwater ecosystems located east of the Hu Line, based on stable isotope techniques. The results show that there are significant spatial differences in the structure of the food web of the studied ecosystem, which is associated with human activities, seasonal variation, environmental factors, etc. Additionally, this study describes how fish exhibit different dietary strategies in response to the fluctuations of food resources, such as the temporal lag of stable isotopic values and changes in trophic ecological niche width (overlap or differentiation). Finally, we summarize the potential uncertainties in the application of stable isotope techniques, emphasizing the necessity to carefully consider these uncertainties when utilizing stable isotope data for ecological research to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the results. The study provides theoretical support for the regional-scale management of freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:利用现代生物学最新研究成果和研究模式,对生物及其生活环境中的元素和稳定同位素之间存在的对应关系进行总结和分析认为,生物因生理、地化环境、元素形态及其利用原则等内外因子而对其生活环境中的元素和稳定同位素存在不同程度的选择性吸收、利用和富集,具体的选择性利用机制均可以从生物的形态构造直至分子水平上加以解释。当环境中元素、同位素含量发生变化时,生物因其对各元素生态幅和耐受限度的差异而并不完全对环境中化学因子的变化产生一致性的响应,分别表现为时代效应、耐受限度效应和生态幅重叠等效应等。部分生物壳体"第二层"与其围岩碳、氧同位素比值及其变化趋势保持着较好的一致性。上述认识不同程度地在泥盆纪腕足类Rhynchospirifer属和Stringocephalus属为代表的生物壳体"第二层"及其围岩的研究中得到验证。

Abstract:The development of the economy and society makes heavy metals (HMs) pollution more and more serious. And, pollution source identification is the primary work of environmental pollution control and land planning. Notably, stable isotope technology has a high ability to distinguish pollution sources, and can better reflect the migration behavior and contribution of HMs from diverse sources, which has become a hot research tool for pollution source identification of HMs. Currently, the rapid development of isotope analysis technology provides a relatively reliable reference for pollution tracking. Based on this background, the fractionation mechanism of stable isotopes and the influence of environmental processes on isotope fractionation are reviewed. Furthermore, the processes and requirements for the measurement of metal stable isotope ratios are summarized, and the calibration methods and detection accuracy of sample measurement are evaluated. Besides, the current commonly used binary model and multi-mixed models in the identification of contaminant sources are also concluded. Moreover, the isotopic changes of different metallic elements under natural and anthropogenic conditions are discussed in detail, and the application prospects of multi-isotope coupling in the traceability of environmental geochemistry are evaluated. This work has some guidance for the application of stable isotopes in the source identification of environmental pollution.

Abstract:Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have led to a rapid and sustained increase in reactive nitrogen production, resulting in nitrogen enrichment at the Earth's surface and triggering many ecological and environmental issues. Stable isotopes are effective tools for tracing the sources and mechanisms of environmental processes. The nitrogen isotope values in surface environments integrate the isotope signatures of different nitrogen sources and the isotope fractionation effects of transformation processes. The composition of nitrogen isotopes can thus be utilized to trace the sources and cycling of nitrogen at the surface, aiding the development of strategies to reduce reactive nitrogen emissions, and assess the ecological effects of nitrogen enrichment. We reviewed the research progress on nitrogen isotope in the sources of reactive nitrogen in atmospheric systems, plant nitrogen utilization, and tracking of nitrogen processes in forest ecosystems. We further discussed how to gain a more systematic and accurate understanding of nitrogen cycle within and between the various spheres of the surface environment.
