[8] found that AS adults were significantly impaired in the flexibility [Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST)] category; these tasks may be confounded by sustained attention and working memory other than shifting [2] . Rinehart et al. [9] found that AS children did not show deficits in shifting from local to global processing. Dichter et al. [10] found that ASD children were not impaired in shifting conditions compared to controls in the Dimensional Change Card Sort Task; we thought that in these 2 studies (local-global shifting and Dimensional Change Card Sort Task) the rules were explained to the participants in advance, unlike in the WCST and CANTAB shifting task in which the participants were not told about the rules [2] and were required to explore the rules themselves and then switch between rules. Thus, we hypothesized that AS children would not be impaired in the shifting task in which the shifting rule was provided to participants. The present study aimed to test this hypothesis using a modified Stroop task which included a shifting condition; inhibition was tested at the same time. Eleven children with AS (10 boys and 1 girl), with a mean age of 7.43 years, comDear Editor, The term ‘executive function’ is an umbrella term comprising a wide range of cognitive processes and behavioral competencies which include problem solving, planning, resistance to interference or inhibition, cognitive flexibility or shifting, and the ability to deal with novelty, etc. Executive functions are usually impaired in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and they are core deficits of ASD [1] . Inhibition and shifting are important components of executive functions and are related to behavioral problems of ASD, such as repeated and restricted behaviors [2] . There are many studies examining inhibition and shifting ability in children with ASD, and results are not consistent [3–5] . One reason for the inconsistent findings is that the ASD group is not homogenous; autism, high functioning autism, and Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) might be different from each other. AS is a subgroup of ASD with average or above average cognitive function and no language delay in patients’ development, and it might represent a pure autism that is not confounded by learning difficulties in other parts of ASD [6] .
