Abstract:The traditional college English intensive reading class is mostly taught by teachers, students are passive learners, and the learning atmosphere is serious and the study is inefficient, which cannot meet the high requirements of modern society for the practical knowledge and ability of contemporary college students. The traditional class education mode should now been changed. In English intensive reading class, students show negative participation or even non-participation, so the teacher has become the master of English class teaching. The communication between students and teachers in speech, behavior and emotion is not ideal, therefore, on the basis of the inability to interact, teaching becomes more boring, students are more reluctant to participate in it. To solve this problem, the author tries to analyze the internal factors that influence students’ effective participation in intensive reading class, and external factors affecting students’ effectiveness. The effective participation strategies are put forward.

Abstract:This paper aims to depict the current situation of application of critical reading skills and strategies among the undergraduates in reading books in English in a local university in the coastal city in China. The findings turn out that critical thinking strategies are used neither automatically nor frequently among the undergraduates. The findings are complemented by data collections from classroom observations, interviews, questionnaire, reading comprehension tests and notes taken in class. In order to have a better understanding of the reasons underlying the infrequent use of critical reading skills and strategies, a qualitative study was conducted in 12 volunteers. This study also reveals that college English for general purpose has, to some extent, contributed to improvement of students’ use of critical thinking skills in reading. It is worth pointing out that the role of College English for General Purpose is not merely for imparting use of English to students but also taking on a vital role of cultivating students’ critical thinking and enhancing the application of critical thinking skills and strategies in reading. This paper has implications for college English teachers in their teaching practice for desirability of enhancing critical thinking in college students. Explicit and systematic teaching of critical thinking strategies is surely encouraged, complete with critical writing in the process of teaching College English for the General Purpose.

Abstract:"English Reading" is a professional compulsory course combining theory with practice. This course covers English language knowledge, culture and literature knowledge, national knowledge, cross-cultural communication knowledge, basic knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, etc., aiming to improve students' reading efficiency and ability to obtain main information, especially text appreciation, rhetoric and critical thinking ability. The task of the lesson is to cultivate students' ability of discourse analysis, semantic appreciation, logical thinking, independent thinking and proficient communication, so as to make them become "application-oriented talents” of high-quality and with innovative consciousness and creative ability". The study aimed to correlate the reading comprehension of English linguistic students, then inform some pedagogical implications for the teaching of reading comprehension (Cuc Thi Kim Pham, 2017). Through the data analysis of an authoritative reading test officially organized by the university, the author found that a large proportion of students in sophomore year failed to perform well in the test and did not demonstrate excellent reading skills. The reasons are as follows: firstly, the "teacher-led role" is neglected in reading teaching; Secondly, students ignore discourse analysis in reading; thirdly, the students' understanding of vocabulary is limited to the meaning of completely equivalent Chinese; Fourth: Grammatical awareness is not strong. The author finds out the problems that students have in reading, and combines relevant cases to conduct in-depth discussions on these issues.

Abstract:English reading strategies and awareness of reading strategies are of great significance for English learners to master and possess high English reading abilities, but in reality, learners' ability to apply English reading strategies is still unsatisfactory. Moreover, this issue seems to be a common and urgent issue for all learners of English as a second language. This study taking a Chinese university (Hunan University of Science and Engineering, HUSE) as an example, using the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) to measure three broad categories of reading strategies, 527 respondents involved, through comparing data mean values of English majors with non-English majors and the composite mean value of these respondents, found that: (a) English major students have higher reading strategy awareness than non-English major students; (b) English major and non-English major students are at different levels in terms of reading strategy awareness and generally have a moderate level of reading strategies; (c) There is great room for improvement in university students’ reading strategy. Centering on how to make good use of the teaching resources of reading courses and how to use innovative ways and methods to enhance the awareness and ability of college students' reading strategies, this study puts forward four measures, namely, attaching importance to reading strategy education in reading course teaching, attaching importance to the leading role of reading course teachers in improving students' reading strategy level in curriculum teaching, attaching importance to students' main role, and strengthening students' reading strategy training.

Abstract:As is known, listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four basic language skills. Reading includes reading aloud and silent reading. Since the 1990s, with the popularity of Communicative Teaching Method, schools emphasize the cultivation of language application and communicative ability more and people pay less attention to reading aloud. Gradually students don’t think reading aloud is important any more. However, reading aloud is not only the starting point in English learning but also the foundation of mastering the target language. Ignoring the teaching of reading aloud exacerbates the problem of the “dumb-Chinese English”. Reading English aloud is very meaningful in oral English and it is also one of the effective ways to improve students’ English language ability. This paper focuses on how to effectively apply reading aloud in oral English teaching from the following aspects: the relation between English reading aloud and language sense, the negative impact of ignoring reading aloud, the basic methods and the application of the skills in reading aloud.

Abstract:A study was made to compare communicative teaching method with traditional teaching methodology in teaching College English Intensive Reading to two different classes in the past two years. The results showed that: communicative method can arouse more enthusiasm from students than traditional method; communicative purpose can be achieved in classroom teaching through making students' activity the center of class,conducting an English class with context and changing “duck-feeding” teaching model.

Abstract:Based on the related theories of cognitive psychology for reading strategies,using the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods,classifying the subjects as successful learners and less successful learners,we conducted a questionnaire survey of the reading strategies of college English Learners and it has been found out that compared with the less successful English learners,the successful English learners in reading activities can make more effective use of reading strategies and have a more specific and definite scheme for cultivating their reading ability for future learning.The training of reading strategies must be based on the firm grasp and improvement of basic language knowledge.

Abstract:This paper discusses the application of organizing strategy in Chinese reading instruction of senior grade in deaf schools from the perspective of practice.It concludes that: the application of organizing strategy can effectively develop students' language and thinking abilities,advance students' monitoring level of reading,promote students' integrated understanding of the texts and improve efficiency of instruction.It suggests that: when using organizing strategy to teach reading in senior grade in deaf schools,teachers should carefully study the textbook and combine the organizing strategy with traditional excellent instruction experiences.

Abstract:English reading, as an important part of high school English teaching, plays a great role in high school English teaching. Therefore, English teachers should pay attention to the cultivation of students’ reading ability. In the actual teaching, the method of teachers to cultivate students’ reading ability is relatively single, mainly through reading the text, which leads to the unsatisfactory reading effect. The reason for this situation is that teachers do not take into account the differences between students, and the one size fits all teaching method is difficult to improve students’ reading ability. In English reading, hierarchical teaching method is adopted, which is combined with students’ reading ability, so that each student’s reading ability can be improved. Therefore, this paper analyzes the application of layered teaching in senior high school English reading, hoping to provide reference for senior high school English reading reform and improve the level of English reading teaching.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the application and effect of action research in college English listening teaching. By conducting an action study from finding problems, reconfirming problems, designing action plans, final actions to reflection, with a hybrid approach to research design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, the study employed questionnaire survey and interview to understand students' satisfaction with listening teaching and the existing problems, namely, the inappropriateness of listening task design, the limits of vocabulary, the lack of listening skills and strategies. Subsequently, a series of solutions are proposed and applied into actions. Teachers adjusted their teaching strategies according to the initial feedback and implemented a series of innovative teaching activities, such as group discussion, role playing, simulate real situations, interactive listening games, and the use of multimedia materials. During the implementation process, researchers regularly collect feedback from students and analyze the data together with teachers to further optimize teaching methods. The results show that action research not only improves students' listening skills and learning motivation, but also enhances their critical thinking and autonomous learning ability. In addition, the teaching practice of teachers has been significantly improved.

Abstract:Reading is not only one of the difficult problems for students, but also one of the most important teaching parts for teachers. 126 students in Xingfeng Jiudu Middle School were taken as the research objects, and their English reading learning was investigated by means of questionnaire survey, so as to find problems existing in junior English reading teaching. Based on the three characteristics of discourse reading: integrity, comprehensiveness and applicability, the paper analyzes junior English reading teaching strategies from the three aspects of pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. The research shows that under the guidance of discourse reading theory, using the method of discourse reading teaching is beneficial to stimulate students' interest in reading and improve their reading ability. For English teachers, it is also a good way to improve teaching efficiency and reduce teaching pressure.
A Study of Embodied-Cognitive Teaching Approach to Teach English Reading in College

Abstract:English Reading plays an important role in English learning. Hence, improving the learners' English reading ability is one of the key issues for English teachers in colleges. This study conducts an experiment on teaching English Reading for the freshmen of E-Commerce major in a higher vocational college, in which the experimental group adopts the Embodied-Cognitive Teaching approach and the control group the traditional teaching approach. In order to ensure the reliability of the study, the data of the two groups of learners are obtained and recorded from the teaching platform. With the help of SPSS Statistic analysis software, the study finds that there is no significant difference in the scores of the instant intensive reading test and the instant vocabulary test between the experimental group and the control group. But there is significant difference in the scores of the instant extensive test and after-class vocabulary tests between the two groups; the experimental group performs better than the control group on the aspects of conceptual understanding and word decoding skills, which shows that Embodied-Cognitive teaching approach helps to improve the learners' reading ability and is one of the new and effective ways for teaching English Reading in Chinese colleges.

Abstract:While research has indicated that college students may benefit from collaboratively reading academic texts, little is known about how they co-construct comprehension through text-based discussions. This case study focused on two groups of undergraduate students with different degrees of participation in discussions – one active group and one silent group – in a course on English for academic purposes (EAP) at a Chinese university. Drawing upon classroom observation and semi-structured interviews, the study investigated the spontaneous use of reading strategies in 10 post-reading group discussions and probed into the key processes for comprehension building shared by the two groups. The findings suggest that the students utilized a series of reading strategies and drew on the ideational and linguistic resources shared within the group to build comprehension. Three key processes for comprehension co-construction were found: (1) paraphrasing to contribute personal understanding, (2) elaborating to clarify meanings, and (3) summarizing to build consensus. Pedagogical implications concerning the instruction and task design for collaborative academic reading are discussed.
