Abstract:In this paper, the long time behavior of nonautonomous infinite dimensional dynamical systems is discussed. Under the spectral gap condition, It is proved that there exist inertial manifolds for a class of nonautonomous evolution equations.

Abstract:The almost sure asymptotic stability of higher-dimensional linear stochastic systems and of a special class of nonlinear stochastic systems with homogeneous drift and diffusion coefficients of order one is studied. Based on the well-known Khasminskii's theorem, a new approach for obtaining the regions of almost sure asymptotic stability and instability without evaluating the stationary probability density of the diffusion process defined on unit hypersphere is proposed. Two examples of two and three degree-of-freedom linear stochastic systems are given to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed approach combined with stochastic averaging.

Abstract:In this article, we devote to the existence of an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ ($d=2,3$). Our results can be summarized as two aspects: Firstly, we construct an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{T}^{2}$; Secondly, we extend slightly the spatial averaging method to the abstract case: $\partial_{t}u+A^{1+\alpha}u+A^{\alpha}F(u)=f$ (here $0<\alpha<1$, $A>0$ is a self-adjoint operator with compact inverse and $F$ is Lipschitz from a Hilbert space $\mathbb{H}$ to $\mathbb{H}$), and then verify the existence of an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equation with the hyperviscous index $5/4$ in $\mathbb{T}^{3}$.

Abstract:In this paper, the long time behavior of the dissipative generalized (2+1)-dimensional long–short wave equations was studied in dynamics. By applying projecting operator and the eigenvalue methods, the approximate inertial manifolds were constructed. And it is proved that arbitrary trajectory of the dissipative generalized (2+1)-dimensional long–short wave equations goes into a small neighborhood of the approximate inertial manifolds after long time.

Abstract:The aim of this expository paper is twofold. We start with a concise overview of the theory of invariant slow manifolds for fast-slow dynamical systems starting with the work by Tikhonov and Fenichel to the most recent works on infinite-dimensional fast-slow systems. The main part focuses on a class of linear fast-reaction PDE, which are particular forms of fast-reaction systems. The first result shows the convergence of solutions of the linear system to the limit system as the time-scale parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. Moreover, from the explicit solutions the slow manifold is constructed and the convergence to the critical manifold is proven. The subsequent result, then, states a generalized version of the Fenichel-Tikhonov theorem for linear fast-reaction systems.

Inertial manifolds for the two-dimensional hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:This study establishes the existence of inertial manifolds for the hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equations (HNSE) on a 2D periodic domain: \begin{equation*} \partial_t u+ \nu(-\Delta) ^{\beta}u+(u\cdot \nabla )u+\nabla p=f, \;\; \text{on} \;\; \mathbb{T}^2, \end{equation*} with $\nabla \cdot u=0$, for any $\beta > \frac{17}{12} $. The exponent $\beta = \frac{3}{2}$ is identified as the "critical" value for the inertial manifold problem in 2D HNSE, below which the spectral gap condition is not satisfied. A breakthrough in this work is that it extends the theory to "supercritical" regimes where $\beta < \frac{3}{2}$. An important aspect of our argument involves a refined analysis on the sparse distribution of lattice points in annular regions.

The strong unstable manifold and periodic solutions in differential delay equations with cyclic monotone negative feedbck

Abstract:For a class of $(N+1)$-dimensional systems of differential delay equations with a cyclic and monotone negative feedback structure, we construct a two-dimensional invariant manifold, on which phase curves spiral outward towards a bounding periodic orbit. For this to happen we assume essentially only instability of the zero equilibrium. Methods of the Poincaré-Bendixson theory due to Mallet-Paret and Sell are combined with techniques used by Walther for the scalar case $(N = 0)$. Statements on the attractor location and on parameter borders concerning stability and oscillation are included. The results apply to models for gene regulatory systems, e.g. the `repressilator' system.

Infinite Number of Integrals of Motion in Classically Integrable System with Boundary (Ii)

Abstract:In Affine Toda field theory, links among three generating functions for integrals of motion derived from Part (I) are studied, and some classically integrable boundary conditions are obtained. An infinite number of integrals of motion are calculated in ZMS model with quasi-periodic condition. We find the classically integrable boundary conditions and K+/-, matrices of ZMS model with independent boundary conditions on each end. It is identified that an infinite number of integrals of motion does exist and one of them is the Hamiltonian, so this system is completely integrable.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to construct invariant manifolds for a coupled system, consisting of a parabolic equation and a second-order ordinary differential equation, set on T3$$\mathbb {T}^3$$ and subject to periodic boundary conditions. Notably, the “spectral gap condition" does not hold for the system under consideration, leading to the use of the spatial averaging principle, together with the graph transform method. This approach facilitates the construction of the relevant invariant manifold, characterized by attributes such as Lipschitz continuity, local invariance, infinite dimensionality, and exponential tracking, thus mirroring the properties traditionally associated with a classical global manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we study slow manifolds for infinite-dimensional evolution equations. We compare two approaches: an abstract evolution equation framework and a finite-dimensional spectral Galerkin approximation. We prove that the slow manifolds constructed within each approach are asymptotically close under suitable conditions. The proof is based upon Lyapunov-Perron methods and a comparison of the local graphs for the slow manifolds in scales of Banach spaces. In summary, our main result allows us to change between different characterizations of slow invariant manifolds, depending upon the technical challenges posed by particular fast-slow systems.

Abstract:The current paper is devoted to the asymptotic behavior of a class of stochastic PDE. More precisely, with the help of the theory of integrated semigroups and a crucial estimate of the random Stieltjes convolution, we study the existence and smoothness of center-unstable invariant manifolds and center-stable foliations for a class of stochastic PDE with non-dense domain through the Lyapunov-Perron method. Finally, we give two examples about a stochastic age-structured model and a stochastic parabolic equation to illustrate our results.

Dynamics of non-autonomous systems with nested invariant cone structure and its applications

Abstract:The current paper is devoted to the investigation of the influence of nested invariant cone structure on the dynamics, in the context of non-autonomous (time almost periodic)cases. We first prove that the nested invariant cone structure can persistent under C1 perturbations; and the dynamics of the omega-limit set of any precompact orbit can be reduced to the dynamics of a compact invariant of a suitable finite dimensional system(see Theorem 2.1). In some special cases, the dynamics of any omega-limit set generated by the skew product semiflow of such a system is similar to a one-dimensional system, that is, the omega-limit set contains at most two minimal sets, and any minimal set is an almost automorphic extension of its base flow(a universal phenomenon in multi-frequency driven systems, introduced by S. Bochner), these results are also correct for such systems under C1 small perturbations(see Theorems 2.2, 2.3). To our best knowledge, it is the first paper to touch the global dynamics of abstract non-autonomous systems with invariant nested cones; the setting is general, since it contains an autonomous system plus an almost-periodic perturbation term, and a periodic system with another periodic perturbation term (these two periods are irrationally dependent)as special cases. The results can be viewed as a generalization of important works of W. Shen and Y. Yi(1995 J. Differential Equations 122 114-136) for scalar parabolic equations with separated boundary conditions, Y. Wang(2007 Nonlinearity 20 831-843) for tridiagonal competitive cooperative systems(see Section 4).

Abstract:There are many interesting dynamical systems in which degenerate invariant tori appear. We give conditions under which these degenerate tori have stable and unstable invariant manifolds, with stable and unstable directions having arbitrary finite dimension. The setting in which the dimension is larger than one was not previously considered and is technically more involved because in such case the invariant manifolds do not have, in general, polynomial approximations. As an example, we apply our theorem to prove that there are motions in the -body problem in which the distances among the first n bodies remain bounded for all time, while the relative distances between the first n -bodies and the last two and the distances between the last bodies tend to infinity, when time goes to infinity. Moreover, we prove that the final motion of the first n bodies corresponds to a KAM torus of the n -body problem.

Abstract:We study the long-time behavior, within the framework of infinite dimensional dynamical systems, of the Cahn–Hilliard equation endowed with a new class of dynamic boundary conditions. The system under investigation was recently derived by Liu–Wu (Arch Ration Mech Anal 233:167–247, 2019) via an energetic variational approach such that it naturally fulfills physical properties like mass conservation, energy dissipation and force balance. For the system with regular potentials, we prove the existence of exponential attractors, which also yields the existence of a global attractor with finite fractal dimension. For the system with singular potentials, we obtain the existence of a global attractor in a suitable complete metric space.

Abstract:This article, based on the typical discrete-time semi-martingale convergence theorem, establishes several generalized versions of invariance principle for describing the long-term dynamical behaviors of discrete-time stochastic dynamical systems. These principles are suitable for investigating the dynamics in autonomous or non-autonomous systems and their applicability is demonstrated via using several representative examples. Particularly for autonomous systems, the established principle renders it possible to estimate the time when an orbit, initiating outside a particular bounded set, finally enters it. Furthermore, we provide a generalized version of discrete-time semi-martingale convergence theorem, and offer a counterexample to urge attentions to some delicate conditions that must be taken into account in the use of some version of convergence theorem.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Volume 23, Issue 2, Page 1052-1089, June 2024. Spectral subspaces of a linear dynamical system identify a large class of invariant structures that highlight/isolate the dynamics associated to select subsets of the spectrum. The corresponding notion for nonlinear systems is that of spectral submanifolds—manifolds invariant under the full nonlinear dynamics that are determined by their tangency to spectral subspaces of the linearized system. In light of the recently emerged interest in their use as tools in model reduction, we propose an extension of the relevant theory to the realm of fluid dynamics. We show the existence of a large (and the most pertinent) subclass of spectral submanifolds and foliations—describing the behavior of nearby trajectories—about fixed points and periodic orbits of the Navier–Stokes equations. Their uniqueness and smoothness properties are discussed in detail, due to their significance from the perspective of model reduction. The machinery is then put to work via a numerical algorithm developed along the lines of the parameterization method, which computes the desired manifolds as power series expansions. Results are shown within the context of two-dimensional channel flows.

Abstract:We consider the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid on a compact Riemannian manifold $\sM$ with boundary. The motion on $\sM$ is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the fluid is subject to pure or partial slip boundary conditions of Navier type on $\partial\sM$. We establish existence and uniqueness of strong as well as weak (variational) solutions for initial data in critical spaces. Moreover, we show that the set of equilibria consists of Killing vector fields on $\sM$ that satisfy corresponding boundary conditions, and we prove that all equilibria are (locally) stable. In case $\sM$ is two-dimensional we show that solutions with divergence free initial condition in $L_2(\sM; T\sM)$ exist globally and converge to an equilibrium exponentially fast.

Abstract:We study the long-time behavior of non-autonomous stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo systems on thin domains. As the (n+ 1)-dimensional thin domains collapses onto an n-dimensional domain, an n-dimensional limiting FitzHugh-Nagumo system is derived. This n-dimensional limit?ing system encodes the defining geometry of the (n+1)-dimensional system. To justify this limiting process, we show that the pullback measure attractors of the FitzHugh-Nagumo systems on thin domains are upper semi-continuous as the height of thin direction tends to zero.

Abstract:The study of long-term behavior of a solution generated by dynamics on time scales always gains a great amount of attentions both from Engineers and from mathematicians. In the paper, a generalized invariance principle, which not only includes the case described by the conventional invariance principle but also involves the case where the sign of the Delta derivative of the Lyapunov function along with the solution is not determined, is established. This consequently allows us to verify the stability and boundedness of the solution generated by a much wider class of dynamic equations on time scales by utilizing this generalized principle.
