Abstract:Presently the engineering ethic has been undergoing a great change,which can be elucidated from the perspective of information philosophy.While the traditional print written language has created a world of object,that is,a "symbolically generalized communication-medium",on which the traditional engineering ethic is based;modern network communication-technique-medium has created a world of object characteristic of individuality,on which contemporary engineering ethic is based.Information philosophy agrees that this is a process in which the information data has been steadily accumulated,and it agrees that any accumulation of information data can signify that of meaningful goodness ethically.

Abstract:The author examines the current status of documentology. The difference between documentary, ontological and theoretical knowledge is explained as related to the sciences of documentary information, and development of documentology is discussed through the lens of the theory of the structure of scientific knowledge. Based on the logical typology of cognition objects as subjects of thought, the just identifications of subjects of thought and concepts related to information units denoted by the term “document” and related terms, are offered. The author analyzes several popular interpretations of various information units. The need for the common intertheory of documentology addressing the phenomena, processes, info units within the documentation activities and provision of socially significant information to the society, is substantiated.

Abstract:Abstract This theoretical essay discusses documentary analysis and bibliographic research methodologies, both in the context of Education, briefly approaching different study subjects and methodologies. The article is divided into four sections: in the first section, we present some introductory notes on the subject; in the second section, we approach the notion of historical documents and the way they can be included in Education research; in the third section, we present the methodologies adopted in bibliographical research; in the fourth section, we make some final remarks. The reflections on the matter are presented in order to contrast these two fields, exposing the theoretical and methodological elements that distinguish them.

Abstract:Documentary narrative visualization is a data visualization approach using the features of documentary film. Researchers in the field of visualization are searching for better methods of constructing narratives from data sets. In this article, we explore the structure and techniques of documentary film and how they apply to the practice of constructing narrative visualization with video. We review the structural aspects of documentary film with examples relevant for narrative visualization. Using six of the highest quality video-based narrative visualizations, we conducted a study of user preferences for three pairs of videos. The video pairs were specifically matched to highlight unique features available in documentary film. Using the preferences expressed by our participants, we performed an empirical study to examine the documentary features most valued by our participants. Our results provide implications about the style and features of documentary film that are most useful in the construction of narrative visualization. Overall, this work provides a clear starting point for the construction of documentary narrative visualization providing content creators with specific techniques that will improve engagement of their content.

Abstract:As the foundational people of the philosophy of information in France and China, Gilbert Simondon and Wu Kun constructed the eminent informational ontology respectively. They both took their first steps from the study of ―Being as Reality‖, settled the foundation notion of systematic reality above all; then criticized and developed the basic problem of philosophy and the conception of information in the cybernetics from different orientation according to their own interesting ; both of naturalism, compared to Simondon, Wu Kun defined the essence of information more precisely, and described the abundant properties of it; based on the informational ontology, the transform of philosophical notion does not only reflect on Simondon’s idea of knowledge, but also take place in the whole philosophical system and even its history. Abstract:In the context of intelligent media, communication ushers in an unprecedented transformation. As an important way of cultural communication, documentary production is exploring the deep integration with emerging technologies. As an important part of documentary creation, historical documentary films are constantly integrated with intelligent technology in reality creation due to their special attributes. The research scope of this paper is under the national "new quality productivity" development strategy to explore the application and potential of intelligent technology in the content shaping of historical documentary films. It is mainly reflected in the selection of massive historical literature materials through artificial intelligence algorithms, the full integration of classified valuable information, and the provision of creative materials and basis for film creation; Post editing and special effect processing through intelligent technology to enhance the film's expressiveness; Restore historical moments and shape spatial scenes through intelligent technologies such as AR, VR virtualization and face recognition; Accurate calculation between works and audiences is achieved through data analysis, and communication channels are expanded. The coupling development of intelligent technology and historical documentary creation promotes its content innovation, stimulates its creative potential, and realizes the digitalization and intelligent content shaping of historical documentary. Through this article, I hope to provide new ideas for the intelligent development of historical documentary creation.

Abstract:Taking an epistemological theoretical approach as our starting point, we can think of museology as an intellectual exercise that helps us establish an open dialogue with other systems of thought, such as the social sciences or information and communication sciences, so that we can perceive reality in all its complexity. At this point, however, the question arises of whether or not museology shares the same objective as these disciplines. From our point of view, we believe museology to be a social science that encompasses the museum object as a document that transmits information and knowledge about reality, and constitutes itself as a support for constructing collective memory. For this reason, museology cannot ignore those other subjects that deal with the documentation of memory. This leads us to ponder the role played by archival and library science within the field of museology. The answer can only be that these areas must be regarded as true documentary sources for museology. Why? Because they consider the museum objects as documents bearing information and knowledge. They also help to conceive the museum as a space and instrument for communication. This constitutes the theoretical basis for the work of the museum.

Abstract:This paper casts light on cultural heritage storytelling in the context of interactive documentary, a hybrid media genre that employs a full range of multimedia tools to document reality, provide sustainability of the production and successful engagement of the audience. The main research hypotheses are enclosed in the statements: (a) the interactive documentary is considered a valuable tool for the sustainability of cultural heritage and (b) digital approaches to documentary storytelling can provide a sustainable form of viewing during the years. Using the Greek interactive documentary (i-doc) NEW LIFE (2013) as a case study, the users’ engagement is evaluated by analyzing items from a seven-year database of web metrics. Specifically, we explore the adopted ways of the interactive documentary users to engage with the storytelling, the depth to which they were involved along with the most popular sections/traffic sources and finally, the differences between the first launch period and latest years were investigated. We concluded that interactivity affordances of this genre enhance the social dimension of cultural, while the key factors for sustainability are mainly (a) constant promotion with transmedia approach; (b) data-driven evaluation and reform; and (c) a good story that gathers relevant niches, with specific interest to the story.

Interactive Documentary: A Production Model for Nonfiction Multimedia Narratives

Abstract:This paper presents an interactive production model for nonfiction multimedia, referred to as interactive documentary. We discuss the design of ontologies for authoring interactive documentary. A working prototype supports the use of reasoning for retrieving, composing, and displaying media resources in real-time. A GUI is designed to facilitate concept-based navigation which enables queries across media resources of diverse types. A dual-root-node data design links ontological reasoning with metadata, which provides a method for defining hybrid semantic-quantitative relationships. Our application focuses on archiving and retrieving non-text based media resources. The system architecture supports sensory-rich display feedback with real time interactivity for navigating documents’ space. We argue an experience of narratives evolves through the performitivity in the interactive narrative structure when the constituents are mediated by common ontology. The consequential experience identifies a renewed practice of oral tradition where the accumulative sensorial propositions inform narratives, such as in performance practice.
On the Nature of Information: How FAIR Digital Objects are Building-up Semantic Space

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned about the nature of information and how to gather and compose data with the help of so called FAIR digital objects (FDOs) in order to transform them to knowledge. FDOs are digital surrogates of real objects. The nature of information is intrinsically linked to the kind of questions one is asking. One might not ask a question or get philosophical about it. Answers depend on the data different disciplines gather about their objects of study. In Statistical Physics, classical Shannon entropy measures system order which in equilibrium just equals the heat exchanged with the environment. In cell biology, each protein carries certain functions which create specific information. Cognitive science describes how organisms perceive their environment via functional sensors and control behavior accordingly. Note that one can have function and control without meaning. In contrast, psychology is concerned with the assessment of our perceptions by assigning meaning and ensuing actions. Finally, philosophy builds logical constructs and formulates principles, in effect transforming facts into complex knowledge. All these statements make sense, but there is an even more concise way. Indeed, Luciano Floridi provides a precise and thorough classification of information in his central oeuvre On the Philosophy of Information (Floridi 2013). Especially, he performs a sequential construction to develop the attributes which data need to have in order to count as knowledge. Semantic information is necessarily well-formed, meaningful and truthful. Well-formed data becomes meaningful by action based-semantics of an autonomous-agent solving the symbol grounding problem (Taddeo and Floridi 2005) interacting with the environment. Knowledge is created then by being informed through relevant data accounted for. We notice that the notion of agency is crucial for defining meaning. The apparent gap between Sciences and Humanities (Bawden and Robinson 2020) is created by the very existence of meaning. Further, meaning depends on interactions & connotations which are commensurate with the effective complexity of the environment of a particular agent resulting in an array of possible definitions.In his classical paper More is different (Anderson 1972) discussed verbatim the hierarchical nature of science. Each level is made of and obeys the laws of its constituents from one level below with the higher-level exhibiting emergent properties like wetness of water assignable only to the whole system. As we rise through the hierarchies, there is a branch of science for each level of complexity; on each complexity level there are objects for which it is appropriate and fitting to build up vocabulary for the respective levels of description leading to formation of disciplinary languages. It is the central idea of causal emergence that on each level there is an optimal degree of coarse graining to define those objects in such a way that causality becomes maximal between them. This means there is emergence of informative higher scales in complex materials extending to biological systems and into the brain with its neural networks representing our thoughts in a hierarchy of neural correlates. A computational toolkit for optimal level prediction and control has been developed (Hoel and Levin 2020) which was conceptually extended to integrated information theory of consciousness (Albantakis et al. 2019). The large gap between sciences and humanities discussed above exhibits itself in a series of small gaps connected to the emergence of informative higher scales. It has been suggested that the origin of life may be identified as a transition in causal structure and information flow (Walker 2014). Integrated information measures globally how much the causal mechanisms of a system reduce the uncertainty about the possible causes for a given state. A measure of "information flow" that accurately captures causal effects has been proposed (Ay and Polani 2008). The state of the art is presented in (Ay et al. 2022) where the link between information and complexity is discussed. Ay et al single out hierarchical systems and interlevel causation. Even further, (Rosas et al. 2020) reconcile conflicting views of emergence via an exact information-theoretic approach to identify causal emergence in multivariate data. As information becomes differentially richer one eventually needs complexity measures beyond {Rn}. One may define generalized metrices on these spaces (Pirró 2009) measuring information complexity on ever higher hierarchical levels of information. As one rises through hierarchies, information on higher scale is usually gained by coarse graining to arrive at an effective, nevertheless exact description, on the higher scale. Abstract:As a kind of thinking mechanism that grasps motion, change and development of objects on the whole, systematic thinking contains a whole set of thinking principles, methods and operation procedures. With the uprising popularity of studies on informational system science and complexity theory, information reveals a new field that the philosophy of the past has not discovered. Wu’s works are putting forward a wholly new scientific thinking way: the Informational Thinking. We can conclude rationally from Wu’s explanations of information that the character of informational thinking way can include and surpass the basic idea of systematic thinking way. So far as the whole process of scientific cognition is concerned, functions of informational thinking are expanded in several aspects.

Abstract:The development of information technology has promoted the generation of a new scientific research paradigm.Social sciences and humanities have gradually developed a data-driven research method in recent years.From the perspective of visualization, the current status of visualization applications in digital humanities was summarized from three levels, task, data, and application, through the analysis of papers at the digital humantites conference organized by alliance of digital humanities organizations.By analyzing different projects setup by different experts with different backgrounds, i.e., humanities, visualization, and art.The great potential of multidisciplinary cooperation to improve the quality of digital humanities plus visualization projects was revealed.The practice of Peking University in exploring this new paradigm of multidisciplinary cooperation in digital humanities plus visualization was shared, which included education in multidisciplinary, practice experience on promotion, and research experience in intelligent visualization.Finally, two ways for the future development of the interdiscipline between digital humanity and visualization were revealed, the cooperation between experts and the collaboration between humans and computers.
