The effects of reaction time, molar ratio of reactants and amount of catalyst on the yield of acetals (ketals) were investigated. The results showed that HMCM-22 was an efficient catalyst for the acetalization and ketalization with high conversion and selectivity in mild conditions.The best reaction condition was as follows: molar ratio of aldehydes and ketones to glycol 1∶1.2, catalyst amount 2 g/1mol aldehydes or ketones, reaction time 2 h. Under that condition, conversion was over 90% and selectivity was over 99%.

Abstract:The acetalization and ketalization of various aldehydes or ketones, namely cyclohexanone, butanone, acetone, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, valeraldehyde, isopentyl aldehyde, octyl aldehyde, and benzaldehyde, with glycol on zeolite Hβ catalyst were studied. Effects of reaction conditions, namely reaction time, mole ratio of aldehydes or ketones to glycol, and catalyst doasge, on reaction were investigated. Zeolite Hβ was an efficient catalyst for acetalization and ketalization with high conversion and selectivity under mild reaction conditions. Optimal reaction conditions were: mole ratio of aldehydes or ketones to glycol 1:1.2, catalyst dosage (1 mol aldehydes or ketones) 2 g, and reaction time 2 h. Under optimal reaction conditions, conversion of aldehydes or ketones and selectivity of acetals or ketals were more than 90% and 98%, respectively.

Abstract:Acetalization and ketalization of various aldehydes and ketones with glycerol by using FeCl3 as catalyst were studied. Effects of reaction time, mole ratio of reactants and amount of catalyst on the yield of acetals (ketals) were investigated. Results showed that FeCl3 was an efficient catalyst for the acetalization and ketalization. The optimal reaction conditions were found as follows: molar ratio of aldehydes and ketones to glycerol = 1 : 1.2, 1 wt% catalyst, reaction time 2 h. Under these conditions, conversion and the selectivity were above 90% and 95%, respectively.

Abstract:Ketalization of cyclohexanone with ethylene glycol was carried out over acid-modified kaolin catalysts. Effects of reaction time, mole ratio between reactants, and catalyst dosage on the reaction were investigated. Under optimal conditions: catalyst dosage(based on 1 mol cyclohexanone) 0.75 g, reaction time 70 min and n(cyclohexanone) ∶n(ethylene glycol)1 ∶1.5, conversion of cyclohexanone and selectivity to product cyclohexanone ethylene ketal can reach 99.9% and 100.0%, respectively. Condensation reactions of different aldehydes or ketones with ethylene glycol could also be conducted over the acid-modified kaolin catalyst. Under above conditions, conversions of aldehydes or ketones and selectivities to the products can achieve more than 91.6% and more than 98.2%, respectively. Acid modification is beneficial to improve performance of kaolin catalyst in condensation reaction.

Abstract:The novel carbon-based acid catalyst has been applied to catalyzing the acetalization and ketalization. The results showed that the catalyst was very efficient with the average yield over 93%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the advantages of high activity, wide applicability even to 7-membered ring acetals, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the green process greatly.

Abstract:The acetalization and ketalization of various aldehydes and ketones with catechol using HAIMCM-41 zeolite as catalyst were studied. Results showed that HAIMCM-41 was an efficient catalyst for the acetalization and ketalization with high conversion and selectivity in mild conditions. The best reaction condition is that molar ratio of catechol to aldehydes or ketones was 1:1.4, catalyst amount was 3.5 g/mol catechol, reaction time was 4 h, n(SiO2)(Al2O3) = 15. Under this condition, conversion was over 85.6% and selectivity was over 99.4%.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:Aroma compound cyclohexanone ethylene ketal was synthesized from cyclohexanone and glycol as starting material with S2O82-/SnO2-SiO2 solid super-acid as catalyst.The catalyst was prepared by precipitation-impregnation method.Factors that affect product yield were investigated.Orthogonal designed experiment was used to optimize reaction conditions.Experimental results showed that S2O82-/SnO2-SiO2 solid super-acid was an excellent catalyst.With conditions of n(glycol)∶n(cyclohexanone)=1.6∶1.0(0.32 mol∶0.2 mol);catalyst dosage of 1.0%(w)of the total reactants;8.0 mL of cyclohexane as water-stripping agent and reaction time 1.5 h;the yield of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal could achieve 97.2%.Stabltity and repeatability of the S2O82-/SnO2-SiO2 catalyst were examined.The yield of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal kept at 90.1% after being re-used for six times.The product was characterized by means of FTIR and GC-MS.Purity of the product achieves higher than 99%.

Abstract:Solid base,KOH/Al_2O_3,was applied as a catalyst in a condensation reaction,and showed advantages over liquid bases.It avoided polluting environment and eroding equipments in using liquid base.In the synthesis of benzalacetone,the yield was above 88% after 3 h.The optimal reaction con- ditions were established:n(benzaldehyde):n(acetone)=1:4,the amount of catalyst is 2g,the best loadings of KOH in the catalyst is 12 mmol/g,reaction temperature is 40-45℃ and reaction time is 3 h.

Abstract:Mesoporous molecular sieves Al-MSU-S has been prepared from the precursor of Y zeolite using 1-hexadecane-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide(CMIMB) as a template in basic medium,which exhibited larger pore diameter,pore volume and surface area.The catalytic activity of Al-MSU-S-Y was studied via the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with glycol.Results showed that it was an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of acetals(ketals).

Abstract:Molecular sieves with different acidities and pore-sizes have been applied to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of carbonyl compounds with glycol. A comparative research on the catalytic activities of the catalysts for certain reactions has been carried out to figure out the relationship between the characters of the catalysts and the activities. The results show that the pore-size of the molecular sieves is one of the most important factors that determine the catalytic activity. Appropriate pore-size is needed for the certain reaction. The acidity is another factor that affects the activities. They also have great effects on the recycled activities of the catalysts.

Abstract:AbstractA clean, facile and practical synthesis of α‐oxoketene S,S‐acetals in water has been developed. Catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) at room temperature in water, a range of β‐dicarbonyl compounds have been converted to the corresponding α‐oxoketene S,S‐acetals in very high yields. The catalyst in the aqueous phase can be recycled after the separation of organic products.

Abstract:Tri-methylammonium-butane sulfonate (TMBSA) ionic liquid (IL) catalyzed efficiently acetylation of acetic anhydride with various alcohols, hydroxyesters and phenols, under solvent-free conditions was described as a novel method. [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid (1.0 mol%) is able to promote quantitative acetylation at low temperature, in high conversion and selectivity (≥95%). The process is highly effective, environmentally benign, and very selective. Furthermore, [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid was conveniently separated with the products and easily recycled to catalyze acetylation reaction again with excellent yields.

Abstract:The rapid rising production of biodiesel has led to a drastic surplus of glycerol, and catalytic conversion of glycerol into value-added products is of great importance. Among of which, solketal, derived from the acetalization of glycerol and acetone, is an important chemical and fuel additive. In this work, a series of solid acid Co[II](Co[III](x)Al2-x)O-4 catalysts were prepared via controlled decomposition of layered double hydroxide and used in the acetalization of glycerol with acetone. It was found that Co[II](Co[III](x)Al2-x))O-4 is highly active and selective for this reaction under mild condition. The selectivity of solketal reached 98.6% with a 69.2% conversion of glycerol at 130 degrees C and 3.0 h over Co[II](Co[III](1.25)Al-0.75)O-4. Characterizations results indicated that the performance of Co[II](Co[III](x)Al2-x))O-4 depended mainly on the acidity of Co[II](Co[III](x)Al2-x)O-4, and the conversion of glycerol increased with the amount of strong acid sites.

Abstract:Glycerol, derived from biodiesel production, is a renewable feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals. Herein, we report an investigation of the acetalization of glycerol with n-octanal by homogeneous acid catalysis in the absence of a solvent, using p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and sulfuric acid, respectively, as catalysts. p-Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, a surfactant-type Bronsted acid, proved to be an excellent catalyst capable of efficiently promoting the reaction under solvent-free conditions, and the yields of glycerol acetals reached 99% under the optimal conditions. The distribution of five-and six-membered cyclic acetal regioisomers varied depending on the reaction time and temperature. Moreover, the amphiphilic properties of the products, with different ratios of five-to six-membered cyclic acetals, have been evaluated by surface tension measurements.

Abstract:Abstract The acetalization of glycerol with acetone to yield solketal was catalyzed by Cs 2.5 H 0.5 PW 12 O 40 (Cs2.5) supported on mesoporous silica under mild conditions. It gave a high glycerol conversion and selectivity to the targeted product even at room temperature (23 °C). We studied the use of both bulk and supported Cs2.5 as catalysts in another highly efficient glycerol acetalization reaction with paraformaldehyde, which gave much higher activity than with formaldehyde solution. For the reaction with acetone, the supported Cs2.5 showed a higher activity than the bulk material because of the high surface area of the mesoporous support. Interestingly, the supported Cs2.5 gave a lower conversion than the bulk for the reaction with paraformaldehyde. This is probably because of the high viscosity of the reaction system with the solid reagent paraformaldehyde. Overall, there is a complex relationship between catalyst, reaction conditions, which include the molar ratio of reactants and temperature, reaction mechanism and thermodynamics that affects the achieved activity and byproduct formation. A discussion about these interactions is included for each reaction.

Abstract:Acetalization of glycerol with acetone could convert surplus glycerol into an important fuel additive (solketal). In this work, a stable solid acid catalyst was synthesized in a facile polycondensation of p-phenolsulfonic acid on KH560 modified SiO2 (PSF/K-SiO2) and used in the acetalization of glycerol at room temperature. Characterization results confirmed that PSF/K-SiO2 possessed larger surface area and surface acidity than that of PSF resin (copolymer of p-phenolsulfonic acid and formaldehyde) and non-modified SiO2 supported PSF resin (PSF/SiO2). As a result, PSF/K-SiO2 was extremely active and stable in the acetalization of glycerol. At 25 degrees C, the detected conversion of glycerol reached 86.3% with a 97.7% selectivity of solketal at 1.5 h. The best yield of solketal over PSF/K-SiO2 could reach 93.1 g-solketal/g-cat/h, and PSF/K-SiO2 could be recycled at least 5 times without obvious decrease in reactivity.
