Matched case-control study on eating disorders in obese school children

Abstract:Objective To explore the eating disorder status among school children,and to provide references for preventing obesity and eating disorder.Methods According to the BMI classification standards,186 obese children and 372 health children of 2 to 4 grades in 6 primary schools in Shanghai were investigated with Eating Disorders Inventory of Children(EDI-C) by 1∶2 matched case-control study.Results More children whose scores of drive for thinness and body dissatisfactory subscales over typical clinic and elevated clinic standards in case group than that in control group;More children whose scores of low self-esteem and interceptive deficits subscales only over elevated clinic standards in case group than that in control group;While in terms of bulimia subscale,more children whose scores over normal standards in control group than that in case group.The negative attitudes to body satisfaction and drive for thinness among case group were significantly higher than control group(P<0.05).The attitudes and behaviors to bulimia were more serious among girls,but statistical analyses revealed no significant age differences in the EDI subscales.Conclusion Eating disorders and related symptoms,such as body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness,are related to children obesity.Since its continuous effect on adulthood,there is a need for complete prevention and proper interference.
