Abstract:Detailed understanding and control of the intermolecular forces that govern molecular assembly are necessary to engineer structure and function at the nanoscale. Liquid crystal (LC) assembly is exceptionally sensitive to surface properties, capable of transducing nanoscale intermolecular interactions into a macroscopic optical readout. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) modify surface interactions and are known to influence LC alignment. Here, we exploit the different dipole magnitudes and orientations of carboranethiol and -dithiol positional isomers to deconvolve the influence of SAM-LC dipolar coupling from variations in molecular geometry, tilt, and order. Director orientations and anchoring energies are measured for LC cells employing various carboranethiol and -dithiol isomer alignment layers. The normal component of the molecular dipole in the SAM, toward or away from the underlying substrate, was found to determine the in-plane LC director orientation relative to the anisotropy axis of the surface. By using LC alignment as a probe of interaction strength, we elucidate the role of dipolar coupling of molecular monolayers to their environment in determining molecular orientations. We apply this understanding to advance the engineering of molecular interactions at the nanoscale.
Investigation of Surface-Induced Alignment of Liquid-Crystal Molecules by Optical Second-Harmonic Generation.

Abstract:We apply the technique of optical second-harmonic generation to study homogeneously aligned liquid-crystal cells. The surface dipole sensitivity of the technique made it possible to study the monolayer in the absence and presence of a bulk of liquid crystal. By comparing the monolayer orientational distribution functions of three surface treatments (rubbed polymer-coated substrates, rubbed surfactant-coated substrates, and substrates made from oblique evaporation of SiO(x) film), we find that two different surface-originated mechanisms are effective in aligning liquid-crystal films. For rubbed polymer samples, it is shown that a short-range molecular interaction is responsible for alignment of the first monolayer, which then aligns the bulk via an epitaxylike interaction. Results on polymers with various structures and compositions and rubbed with a variety of rubbing strengths are presented. For the other surface treatments, the first monolayer is isotropically distributed, indicating that a bulk elastic interaction is responsible for the bulk alignment.

Abstract:The Landau-deGennes theory predicts interesting pretransitional surface behavior at the interface between a liquid crystal and a smooth or rough substrate. In the former case, we propose a simple form for the liquid crystal-substrate interaction which yields enhanced surface ordering in the nematic and a uniaxial-biaxial transition in the isotropic phase. For the experimentally accessible range of liquid crystal-substrate interaction strengths, the experimentally observed pretransitional behavior in the isotropic phase is in excellent agreement with the theory. For the case of a rough substrate, pretransitional surface disordering in the nematic is predicted and measured directly by evanescent-wave ellipsometry, while pretransitional random-planar surface ordering occurs in the isotropic phase.

Abstract:The anchoring direction of liquid crystals on a solid substrate surface depends upon many parameters characterizing the liquid-crystal--substrate interface, a variation of which may change this anchoring direction leading to the so-called anchoring transition. Here, based on the Langmuir-Blodgett film technique, we present two model systems to study the relation between anchoring directions and the conformation changes in aligning agents. A double-armed crown ether liquid crystal and a side chain polymer liquid crystal at an air-water interface both show phase transitions, accompanied by conformation changes. However, when the monolayers in different phases were transferred onto solid substrates to orient liquid crystals, we found that for the crown ether material the conformation change can alter the anchoring of liquid crystals between homeotropic and homogeneous alignments, while for the polymer liquid crystal, despite the conformation changes, the liquid crystals can only be aligned homeotropically. The involved mechanisms were briefly discussed in terms of the Landau-type phenomenological theory.

Abstract:The homeotropic and homogeneous alignment of a liquid crystal material, 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), were achieved by Langmuir monolayers of a double-armed crown ether liquid crystal, N,N-bis[4-(4-heptoxybenzoyloxy)benzo-yl]-1,10-diaza-4,7,13,16-tetracyclooxaotadecane (CELC) . We found that when the monolayer was deposited before the phase transition during monolayer compression, it induced liquid crystal alignment homogeneously; when the monolayer was transferred after the transition, homeotropic liquid crystal alignment was produced. Atomic force microscopy was used to examine the morphology and microstructure of the alignment agent. The results show a conformational change of the alignment agent before and after the transition. The anchoring transition is interpreted as the result of orientational change of the CELC monolayer. We present strong evidence that the orientational change of dipoles in the alignment agent can induce an anchoring transition.

Abstract:Different homologues of cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals (CB LC) (nCB with n = 5, 6, 7) present an interesting and novel material system. So far, their orientational behavior at nanoscale has not been extensively investigated yet. Here, we utilized a self-established in situ ball-on-disk testing platform equipped with polarized Raman spectroscopy, to study the ordering performance of nCB LCs confined as a nano-thin lubricating film. The results demonstrated that both external condition as shear velocity and internal molecular alkyl length dramatically affect the ordering process of nCB LC nano-lubricating film, consequently the degree of anisotropy. A simple model, along with detailed physical analysis, has been proposed to explain the observed phenomena. Our findings may provide new insights into controlling the alignment of LCs during lubricating.
Orientational order in liquid crystal surface induced by evaporation of water droplet

Abstract:The evaporation of a droplet induces variety of ordered patterns near the contact line between the droplet and a substrate. This pattern formation involves both the behavior of colloidal suspensions and interactions between a droplet and a substrate. Although studies on the effect of the behavior of colloidal suspensions on the deposition process have been actively conducted, studies on the effect of the interaction between a droplet and a substrate have not been actively conducted because the observation of the interaction is difficult owing to the lack of structural changes in the substrate by the interaction. In this study, we investigated the solvent-substrate interactions by using a water droplet and liquid crystals as a substrate, where the liquid crystals were placed on a glass slide. The orientation patterns of the liquid crystals were induced at the contact line between the water droplet and the liquid crystal and were observed using a polarized optical microscope. Pinning and depinning events were observed at a certain anchoring strength of the liquid crystal on the glass slide and formed linear patterns on the surface of the liquid crystal. Additionally, the interfacial tension between the water and liquid crystal slowly varied at this anchoring strength owing to the variation in the orientation of the liquid crystals. These results indicated that the evaporation-induced patterns appeared when the strength of the solvent-substrate interactions was neutral. The interaction between a droplet and a substrate is important for the fabrication of desired ordered patterns.

Abstract:The monolayer films of a double-armed crown ether liquid crystal have been prepared under low and high surface pressures, which can produce homogeneous and homeotropic alignments of liquid crystals, respectively. The anchoring transition has been interpreted as the result of a conformation change of the aligning agents. This is the first clear experimental demonstration that a conformation change of aligning molecules can induce an anchoring transition of liquid crystals.

Abstract:A disordered nematic surface layer, with negative orientational order or biaxial order, is shown to result from interaction with substrates which favor random planar alignment. We propose a simple interaction Hamiltonian which yields predictions in excellent agreement with measured pretransitional effects for 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl on clean glass and unrubbed n-methylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane substrates. When the dimensionless interaction strength is larger than a critical value, a pretransitional biaxial boundary layer is predicted for a temperature range which is bounded above by surface biaxial-uniaxial and biaxial-biaxial transitions, and below by a complete wetting transition of the boundary layer.

The results provide definitive information about physical mechanisms responsible for the surface-induced bulk liquid crystal alignment. Abstract:Surface second harmonic generation was used to obtain approximate orientational distributions of the side chains and the adsorbed liquid crystal (LC) molecules on a rubbed side-chain polyimide surface. Both the side chains and the LC molecules appear to be well aligned in the rubbing direction but tilted away from the surface in the antirubbing direction. The latter yields a negative pretilt angle in a homogeneously aligned LC film sandwiched between two such surfaces. The side chains and the LC molecules, however, have antiparallel orientations at the surface.

Abstract:It is now well established that topological microstructures play a key role in the physical properties of surfaces. Stimulus-induced variations of topological microstructure should therefore lead to a change in the physical properties of microstructured responsive surfaces. In this paper, we demonstrate that roughness changes alter the wetting properties of responsive organic surfaces. Oriented nematic liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are used to construct the microstructured surfaces via a replica molding technique. The topological microstructure of the surfaces covered with micropillars changes with temperature, due to the reversible contraction of the LCE pillars along the long axis at the nematic-to-isotropic phase transition. This is directly observed for the first time under environmental scanning electron microscopy (E-SEM). A high boiling point liquid, glycerol, is used to continuously monitor the contact angle change with temperature. The glycerol contact angle of the microstructured surfaces covered with small pillars decreases from 118 at room temperature to 80 at 140 C, corresponding to a transition from Cassie state to Wenzel state. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Abstract:A double-armed crown ether liquid crystal is spread at the air-water interface to form a Langmuir monolayer. The surface Pressure-molecular area isotherms indicate that the monolayer undergoes a phase transition when the surface pressure increases, which, by a molecular model, can be ascribed to a change of molecular conformation. The monolayers are deposited on solid substrates to align liquid crystals before and after the transition, and homogeneous and homeotropic alignments can be produced respectively. This further confirms the phase diagram.

Abstract:In liquid crystal materials, frustration between competing interactions and thermal fluctuation results in the observation of many different phases (up to 5) in a relatively narrow temperature window (usually about 30K). Identifying the interactions as well as finding out the nature of those interactions that stabilize those phases is a very important and interesting question. In this thesis, we study the interlayer interactions in smectic liquid crystal materials through the study of surface effects on the phase transition in smectic liquid crystal films. Elevated surface interactions in liquid crystal materials result in surface transitions higher in temperature than the bulk transitions. In the free standing film geometry employed in our research, the nature of the surface order (surface transition temperature, number of surface layers, surface critical exponent, etc.) are intrinsic properties of the system. With the surfaces ordered before the rest of the sample, the interior transitions take place under the effective field created by the ordered surfaces. By studying the effects of this surface field on the interior transitions, as well as the interactions between surface layers and interior layers, and the interactions between the surface layers, we are able to obtain valuable information about the nature of the interlayer interactions in smectic liquid crystal materials. Our results also provide new insights into the nature of the surface transitions in the ordered surface region of the phase diagram.
Chiral fluid membranes with orientational order and multiple edges

Abstract:We carry out Monte Carlo simulations on fluid membranes with orientational order and multiple edges in the presence and absence of external forces. The membrane resists bending and has an edge tension, the orientational order couples with the membrane surface normal through a cost for tilting, and there is a chiral liquid crystalline interaction. In the absence of external forces, a membrane initialized as a vesicle will form a disk at low chirality, with the directors forming a smectic-A phase with alignment perpendicular to the membrane surface except near the edge. At large chirality a catenoid-like shape or a trinoid-like shape is formed, depending on the number of edges in the initial vesicle. This shape change is accompanied by cholesteric ordering of the directors and multiple $\pi$ walls connecting the membrane edges and wrapping around the membrane neck. If the membrane is initialized instead in a cylindrical shape and stretched by an external force, it maintains a nearly cylindrical shape but additional liquid crystalline phases appear. For large tilt coupling and low chirality, a smectic-A phase forms. For lower values of the tilt coupling, a nematic phase appears at zero chirality with the average director oriented perpendicular to the long axis of the membrane, while for nonzero chirality a cholesteric phase appears. The $\pi$ walls are tilt walls at low chirality and transition to twist walls as chirality is increased. We construct a continuum model of the director field to explain this behavior.
