Abstract:A three dimensional hydrodynamic model, using a sigma coordinate grid in the vertical, with subgrid scale diffusion represented using a range of turbulence energy closure schemes, is used to examine M(2) tidal elevations and currents in the Irish Sea. Changes in turbulence energy intensity in particular surface turbulence with variations in mixing length formulation is also considered. A no-slip condition is applied at the sea bed and the sensitivity of tidal elevations and particular tidal currents to changes in bottom roughness length and formulation of mixing length are examined; also detailed comparisons are made with measurements. From these comparisons it is evident that the bed roughness has a major influence upon tidal elevations, and current profiles in the near bed region. Near bed currents are also influenced by the form of the mixing length close to the sea bed, although its value in the upper part of the water column is of less importance. However, the vertical variation of turbulent energy, in particular its surface value, is very sensitive to the mixing length.Elevations computed with the three dimensional model with various closure assumptions are compared with those from a 2D-vertically integrated hydrodynamic model. In general the two dimensional model appears to reproduce elevations slightly more accurately than the three dimensional model. A 'hybrid' three dimensional model using an identical bed stress formulation to that in a two dimensional model is used as a means to compute currents and turbulence energy intensities while maintaining the same elevation distribution as that computed with a two dimensional model.
Three-Dimensional Tidal Dynamics in a Bended Deep Waterway

Abstract:For the complicated shoreline and bathymetry near the Zhoushan archipelago sea area, the 3-D tidal characteristic in the channel is complicated to handle and requires a detailed research. In this paper, a 3-D current model is established through FVCOM to study the tidal dynamics characteristic. The measured data of the current in the Zhoushan archipelago are collected to test the model, and the simulating process is generally consistent with real data. Conclusions are as follows by analyzing flow field, tide level, cross-section velocity distribution and distribution characteristics of residual current and so on. Tidal current near the Zhoushan archipelago sea area is largely affected by the inconsistent tidal power from different channels, the large curvature of main channel, Coriolis force and the channel opening direction and so on. The tides are larger along the northern bottom during the flood and larger along the southern surface of the Luotou channel during the ebb.
A Numerical Study on the Effect of Tidal Flat’s Slope on Tidal Dynamics in the Xiangshan Bay, China

Abstract:The Xiangshan Bay is a semi-enclosed and narrow bay, which is characterized by large scale tidal flats and has been historically utilized through coastal construction and aquaculture engineering. The hydrodynamic model using the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model（FVCOM） was constructed to examine the changes of tidal dynamics due to the variation of tidal flat slopes. According to the model results, a decreased slope of a tidal flat would amplify the M2 tidal amplitude and delay the M2 tidal phase in the inner harbor, due to an increased tidal prism, and vice versa. The amplitude of the main shallow-water tide M4 would be amplified/dampened in the entire bay due to the changed bottom friction, if the tidal flat’s slope were reduced/increased at the Tie inlet. The phase was advanced. The change of a tidal flat’s slope at the Tie inlet had greater impacts on tidal amplitude,phase and duration asymmetry, than that at the Xihu inlet. The impact of changes of the tidal flat slope at the Xihu inlet was small and was constrained locally. Changes in the tidal flats’ slopes at the Tie and Xihu inlets changed the tidal duration asymmetry, residual current and tidal energy via modulating tides. The ebb dominance decreased when the tidal flat’s slope at the Tie inlet was changed. Decreased/increased ebb dominance occurred when the tidal flat’s slope was reduced/increased at the Xihu inlet. The residual current and tidal energy density was amplified/dampened and more/less tidal energy was dissipated, with reduced/increased slope at both of the inlets. The findings in this study are instructive to coastal engineering and estuarine management.
Fluid Mud Dynamics and Its Correlation to Hydrodynamics in Jiaojiang River Estuary, China

Abstract:The Jiaojiang Estuary is a macro-tidal estuary with high turbidity and funnel-shaped geomorphology. Estuarine geomorphology and shipping are highly affected by sediments and heavy coastal engineering. Based on observed data and numerical simulation results, we studied the characteristics of the suspended sediments and fluid mud in the estuary. By considering two-way coupling of water–sediment density and the process of fine sediment flocculation, a three-dimensional sediment model of the Jiaojiang Estuary was established and effectively calibrated using the measured data on tides, currents, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Field data analysis indicated that SSC and sediment transport rate in both the main tidal channel and shoals were positively correlated with the flow velocity in the low-frequency part during both the spring and neap tides. The model results revealed that the net sediment flux is controlled by advection and moves landward upstream of the main tidal channel. Fluid mud is formed near Haimen station, with tides influencing the spatial and temporal variations in its thickness and speed. Sediment is actively exchanged among fluid mud-water-seabed, with sink and source processes dominating near the bay mouth and the Haimen station, respectively. Sediments weaken the seaward residual currents slightly by changing their viscosity and the von Karman constant, and the stratification process is affected by changes in water density. The findings of this study provide a foundation for the study of material transportation in an estuarine ecosystem.

Abstract:Oceanic turbulence plays an important role in coastal flow. However, as the effect of an uneven lower boundary on the adjacent turbulence is still not well understood, we explore the mechanics of nearshore turbulence with a turbulence-resolving numerical model known as a large-eddy-simulation model for an idealized scenario in a coastal region for which the lower boundary is a solid sinusoidal wave. The numerical simulation demonstrates how the mechanical energy of the current is transferred into local turbulence mixing, and shows the changes in turbulent intensity over the continuous phase change of the lower topography. The strongest turbulent kinetic energy is concentrated above the trough of the wavy surface. The turbulence mixing is mainly generated by the shear forces; the magnitude of shear production has a local maximum over the crest of the seabed topography, and there is an asymmetry in the shear production between the leeward and windward slopes. The numerical results are consistent with results from laboratory experiments. Our analysis provides an important insight into the mechanism of turbulent kinetic energy production and development.

Abstract:In this study, the wave-induced mass transport and internal mixing under regular waves propagating in a flume are numerically investigated by a VOF-type (Volume of Fluid) method. A two-phase VOF method based on a multi-phase flow mathematical theory is implemented in a constraint interpolation profile (CIP)-based model to track the free surface and water-water interface simultaneously under Eulerian framework. First, the numerical validation is performed on Stokes drift distribution under regular waves propagating in a flat bottom flume. Good grid convergence and mass conservation are verified. The computed results show favorable agreement with theoretical solution and experimental data. The regular waves propagating over a submerged breakwater are further investigated, focusing on the mass transport and internal mixing in the long term evolution of flow field. The mass transport and water exchange in the vicinity of breakwater are presented qualitatively. A significant water mixing and broken interface are observed even if there is no regular waves breaking. Results indicate that the CIP-based model coupled with the two-phase VOF method can provide a different perspective to study wave-induced mass transport and internal mixing in coastal zone.
Dynamics of Sediment Transport and Stratification in Changjiang River Estuary, China

Abstract:Suspended sediment transport and stratification in the entire Changjiang River Estuary were examined using the field data of sea-surface level, currents, salinity, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). The data were simultaneously observed at one-hour intervals and at six vertical layers at 23 stations covering two spring tidal cycles in May, 2004. The results showed that ebbing tides had a longer tidal duration and stronger tidal currents than flooding tides, due to a fresh water discharge. The tidal range reached about 4 m and the peak tidal current of about 2.9 m/s occurred in the north passage in the observed period. A stratification caused by salinity and suspended sediment appeared and varied with tides indicated by the overall Richardson number. The potential energy anomaly was larger when SSC was factored in to the water density. A stratification ratio (S-r), which is the ratio of potential energy required to induce complete mixing to the overall potential energy, was proposed to measure the degree of sediment stratification. S-r values indicated that mixing the stratified turbid water took as much as 0.25% of the overall potential energy at a particular field station. A turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) was observed in the north passage, where the salt-fresh-water interface and stratification appeared, due to the advective and tidal transport component. The main components controlling the vertical-averaged net sediment transport were the Eulerian velocity, Stokes drift and tidal pumping. Salinity intrusion creates the stratification in the north passage, which depresses the turbulence and re-suspension of sediment. The stratification is further enhanced by the vertical distribution of suspended sediment, which results in a TMZ and induces sediment deposition/trapping in the channel. Hence, the SSC was essential to be considered in the study of estuarine stratification, particularly in the highly turbid estuaries.
Numerical Study of the Tides and Residual Currents in the Qiongzhou Strait

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional ECOM model, the tide, tide-induced residual current, wind-driven and density currents in the Beibu (Tonkin) Gulf and Qiongzhou Strait are diagnostically computed in fine grid. The tides and tidal currents in the Beibu Gulf and Qiongzhou Strait are well reproduced. The model results show that the semidiurnal tidal wave propagates eastward from the Beibu Gulf through Qiongzhou Strait, while diurnal tidal waves enter the strait from both the eastern and western sides and interact on the southeast coast of the strait. The formation processes of the residual currents in Qiongzhou Strait in summer (August) and winter (January) are mainly discussed. It is shown that the total residual currents (coupling effect of wind, tide and density) in the strait are westward in both summer and winter. The water volume transported from the east to west into the Beibu Gulf is 0.026 Sv in summer and 0.116 Sv in winter. Numerical experiments indicate that the dominant factor affecting the residual currents in the strait is not the wind stress but the tidal rectification. The westward tide-induced residual current, driven by the tidal rectification, is rather strong in the strait with water volume transport of 0.063 Sv. The wind in summer only reduces the westward tide-induced residual current to a certain extent, and the wind in winter approximately doubles the westward tide-induced residual current through the strait. The density current contributes little to the total residual current in both summer and winter.

Abstract:A brief outline of the major steps in the formulation of a non-linear three-dimensional baroclinic model suitable for studying the generation of the internal tide and associated mixing is presented in the first part of this paper. A two prognostic equation turbulence energy model is used to compute the mixing. A comparison of linear inviscid solutions computed with the model and published solutions in the literature, demonstrate that accurate numerical solutions can be obtained provided the grid is sufficiently fine to resolve the significant vertical and horizontal changes associated with the internal tide. An indication of the grid resolution required in the model is presented in this paper. A comparison of internal tidal current magnitudes, displacements and mixing intensities shows that with strong tidal forcing there are significant differences between the linear and non-linear model. Also in the case of strong forcing the numerical form of the advection scheme used in the density equation is particularly important. A detailed discussion of the reasons for differences in the internal tide computed with linear and non-linear models and the importance of the intensity of the barotropic tidal forcing is presented in this paper. On the Influence of Stratification and Tidal Forcing Upon Mixing in Sill Regions

Abstract:A cross-sectional non-hydrostatic model with idealized topography was used to examine the processes influencing tidal mixing in the region of sills. Initial calculations with appropriate parameters for the sill at the entrance to Loch Etive showed that the model could reproduce the main features of the observed mixing in the region. In particular, the hydraulic jump in the sill region was reproduced, as was an intense mid-water jet that was observed to separate from the lee side of the sill. Shear instabilities associated with the jet appeared to be a source of mixing within the thermocline. In addition, internal lee waves were generated on the lee side of the sill, with the observed amplification because of trapping during the flood stage. Their magnitude and hence the mixing increased with increasing Froude number (F (r)). In the case of vertically varying buoyancy frequency, its value near the sill top determined the F (r) number, with its value below influencing internal waves magnitude at depth. At high F (r) values particularly with strong currents, short waves and overturning occurred.
Influence of Stratification Upon Diurnal Tidal Currents in Shelf Edge Regions

Abstract:A three-dimensional stratified tidal model of the Hebrides shelf area off the west coast of Scotland is used to examine the spatial distribution of the M-2, O-1, and K-1 tides in the region. The model has a finer horizontal finite-difference grid than previous models of the region, with a biharmonic form of horizontal diffusion, and the total variation diminishing scheme for density advection. By this means horizontal diffusion is kept to a minimum and internal tidal effects can be included.Preliminary calculations assuming a homogeneous sea region show that the model can accurately reproduce the M-2, O-1, and K-1 tidal elevations in the region. An enhancement of the O-1 and K-1 tidal elevations and currents at the shelf edge to the northwest of the Hebrides is found in the model, in agreement with theory and observations. However the enhancement of the diurnal tides, in particular tidal currents along the shelf edge, is larger than that found in the observations, with some regions of local enhancement that are not supported by observations.Including stratification effects reduces the diurnal tidal currents along the shelf edge and removes the areas of spurious local intensification, giving a distribution in good agreement with observations. A reduction in the amplitude of the diurnal tidal currents at the shelf edge can also be achieved in the three-dimensional model by relating bed stress to depth-mean currents tin essence a two-dimensional model). Although this reduction improves the agreement with observations, regions of spurious; intensification still remain, which can only be removed by including stratification effects.

Abstract:The major steps in the formulation of a three-dimensional shelf edge model using a sigma coordinate system in the vertical are briefly described. Vertical diffusion of momentum is parameterized using a range of turbulence closure models, and results are compared with earlier calculations using a simple flow-related viscosity. The influence of the magnitude of horizontal eddy viscosity upon spatial variability at the shelf edge is examined. The model is applied to the calculation of M(2) and O-1 tidal elevations and currents in the shelf edge region off Scotland (the Hebrides shelf), and comparisons are made with data collected in the region. Computed M(2) tidal elevations and currents are shown to be in adequate agreement with observations, with no significant differences between tidal profiles computed with the turbulence energy models or the earlier calculations using a simple viscosity model. The magnitude of the horizontal eddy viscosity does not appear to affect this component of the tide. Tidal currents in deep water are not influenced by the presence of a specified (diagnostic) temperature profile, although this does influence the profile in some shallow sea regions. Computed O-1 tidal currents in the shelf edge region exhibit local spatial variability and are significantly influenced by the magnitude of horizontal viscosity and grid resolution.

Abstract:In order to understand the influences of tide, waves and sediment sizes on the sand exchange between an estuary and the adjacent coastal region, three estuaries around North West England were chosen for detailed study using a numerical morphological model system, TELEMAC (Hervouet and Bates, 2000). The numerical model was calibrated against available field measurements for both hydrodynamics and sediment transport. Simulations on sediment transport under a representative combined waves and tidal condition were carried out. Comparisons of the model results across the three different estuaries concentrate on effects from seabed bathymetry, hydrodynamics and sediment sizes under the complex tide and wave interactions. It is clear that the dominant hydrodynamic processes of an estuary are influenced by the tidal asymmetry, wave-driven currents and wave-induced stirring effects, which are all affected by the local seabed bathymetry given the same input tide and waves. Generally, it is found that the net sediment transport direction at the estuary mouth depends on the relative strength of landwards transport in the shallow water depths due to tidal asymmetry and seawards transport within the estuary's deep channels. In addition, the overall sediment flux direction is largely dictated by local and surrounding sediment sizes.
A process study of the interaction of tidal currents, tidal mixing and density gradients in a region of freshwater influence

Abstract:A three dimensional unstructured grid model of the west coast of Britain is used to study the process of the interaction of tidal currents, tidal mixing and density gradient in the Liverpool Bay region. Calculations with M2 tidal forcing and omitting freshwater discharge show that tidal currents in the region are strong (of order 1ms−1), with tidal current ellipses essentially rectilinear in the surface and bottom. In the absence of tidal forcing, the freshwater is confined to a thin surface layer. With the inclusion of tidal mixing the surface layer thickens, and in the shallow water area mixed layer occupies the whole water depth. This has a significant effect of reducing its lateral spread. A detailed study of time series of velocity, salinity and turbulence reveals that at flood tide, more saline water is advected into the coastal region and rapid vertical mixing occurs, whereas at ebb tide, fresher water is advected over more saline water. The induced strong pycnocline uncouples surface and bottom layers leading to more circular tidal ellipses which rotate in opposite directions in the vertical, as found in observations. The three dimensional nature of the model reveals that this process involves both horizontal and vertical density gradients, and shows significant horizontal variability in the Liverpool Bay region.

Abstract:In order to understand the influence of tide on sand exchange between an estuary and adjacent coastal region, three estuaries around North West England were chosen for detailed study using an open-source numerical morphological model system, TELEMAC. The source code of model was modified to customize tidal conditions and bed sand sizes. An "input- reduction" method was used to model sediment transport under several tides. "Morphological representative tide" was further achieved for long-term morphological modelling. It is clear that the dominant hydrodynamic processes of an estuary are influenced by tidal asymmetry. Local sediment transport is affected by seabed bathymetry and tidal asymmetry. Furthermore, shape and bathymetry of an estuary can influence tidal elevation and velocity. Tidal range can change transportation of the tidal wave which further changes the range of sediment transport.

Abstract:This paper briefly describes the development of a three-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamic model of the sea region off the west coast of Scotland, the North Channel, and the Irish Sea. The model uses a sigma coordinate in the vertical, and subgrid-scale mixing of momentum is parameterized by a vertical eddy viscosity computed using a turbulence energy submodel. Numerical calculations illustrate the importance of wind direction and topography in determining flow pathways along the west coast of Scotland, through the North Channel, and within the Irish Sea. The role of a northward flow into the Irish Sea through St. George's Channel, arising from wind events over the Celtic Sea, in controlling the flow in the North Channel and deep regions of the Irish Sea is also considered. The series of calculations presented here helps to explain the spatial and temporal variability of the observed flows (from both direct measurements and tracer studies) found off the west cost of Scotland and in the North Channel and the Irish Sea.
Influence of Multiple Sills Upon Internal Wave Generation and the Implications for Mixing

Abstract:A cross sectional non‐hydrostatic model of a fjord is used to examine to what extent the internal tide is modified by two closely spaced sills. The model is forced with an M2 barotropic tide and internal tides, unsteady lee waves and a jet are generated at the sills. In contrast to an isolated sill, calculations with two closely spaced sills show that the presence of the second sill leads to standing internal wave generation with associated changes in wave spectrum and Richardson number in the inter sill region. Associated with these there is a cascade of energy towards short waves leading to enhanced mixing between the sills. This increase in mixing is consistent with enhanced mixing between closely spaced sills found in observations. It is also relevant to enhanced oceanic mixing and suggest that future mixing measurements should focus on these regions.

Abstract:A fully nonlinear, three-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the Irish Sea, using a range of turbulence energy sub-models, is used to examine the influence of the turbulence closure method upon the vertical variation of the current profile of the fundamental and higher harmonics of the tide in the region. Computed tidal current profiles are compared with previous calculations using a spectral model with eddy viscosity related to the flow field.The model has a sufficiently fine grid to resolve the advection terms, in particular the advection of turbulence and momentum. Calculations show that the advection of turbulence energy does not have a significant influence upon the current profile of either the fundamental or higher harmonic of the tide, although the advection of momentum is important in the region of headlands. The simplification of the advective terms by only including them in their vertically integrated form does not appear to make a significant difference to current profiles, but does reduce the computational effort by a significant amount.Computed current profiles both for the fundamental and the higher harmonic determined with a prognostic equation for turbulence and an algebraic mixing length formula, are as accurate as those determined with a two prognostic equation model (the so called q(2)-q(2)l model), provided the mixing length is specified correctly. A simple, flow-dependent eddy viscosity with a parabolic variation of viscosity also performs equally well.

Abstract:A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model covering the area off the west coast of Scotland and part of the ocean beyond, and extending south through the North Channel and into the Irish Sea is used to examine wind-driven and oceanically forced currents in the region. The effect of friction on the shelf due to tidal currents upon the extent to which the shelf edge flow can “leak” onto the shelf is also considered. Calculations in which an Atlantic inflow is introduced in initially deep water, and subsequently shallow water off the west coast of Ireland, demonstrate the processes by which this inflow can cross the shelf edge, and Atlantic water can reach the west coast of Scotland and enter the Irish Sea. The interaction of this flow with wind-induced flows due to uniform southerly and westerly winds is also considered. Also, the role of a northward flow into the Irish Sea through St George's Channel in modifying the wind and Atlantic forced currents on the shelf is examined. The spatial variability and the level of interaction between these flows help to understand the spatial and temporal variability found in the measurements in the region.
Effect of Water Depth and the Bottom Boundary Layer Upon Internal Wave Generation over Abrupt Topography

Abstract:The role of water depth and bottom boundary layer turbulence upon lee-wave generation in sill regions is examined. Their effect upon vertical mixing is also considered. Calculations are performed using a non-hydrostatic model in cross-section form with a specified tidal forcing. Initial calculations in deeper water and a sill height such that the sill top is well removed from the surrounding bed region showed that downstream lee-wave generation and associated mixing increased as bottom friction coefficient k increased. This was associated with an increase in current shear across the sill. However, for a given k, increasing vertical eddy viscosity A v reduced vertical shear in the across sill velocity, leading to a reduction in lee-wave amplitude and associated mixing. Subsequent calculations using shallower water showed that for a given k and A v, lee-wave generation was reduced due to the shallower water depth and changes in the bottom boundary layer. However, in this case (unlike in the deepwater case), there is an appreciable bottom current. This gives rise to bottom mixing which in shallow water extends to mid-depth and enhances the mid-water mixing that is found on the lee side of the sill. Final calculations with deeper water but small sill height showed that lee waves could propagate over the sill, thereby reducing their contribution to mixing. In this case, bottom mixing was the major source of mixing which was mainly confined to the near bed region, with little mid-water mixing.
