Abstract:Electronic auction is one of the basic businesses in electronic commerce. The protection of bidder privacy and the prevention of bidder default are the key problems need to be urgently solved. At the same time, the study of general auction protocol, which can be applied in any type of auction, is still very weak. Aiming at these shortcomings, This work designed a new secure auction protocol in the case of protecting bidders. Using the digital signature and encryption technology, this proposed protocol not only guarantees the non-repudiation and anonymity of bidders, but also ensures that nobody can manipulate other bidders in the whole auction. And also, this protocol achieves the valuable property of bid secrecy and verifiability. Even when malicious bidders collude with auctioneers, it is still secure and valid. Compared with previous works, this protocol provides better generality, and is suitable for large-scale distributed auction.

Abstract:Compared with paper-based voting, electronic voting not only has advantages in storage and transmission, but also can solve the security problems that exist in traditional voting. However, in practice, most electronic voting faces the risk of voting failure due to malicious voting by voters or ballot tampering by attackers. To solve this problem, this article proposes an electronic voting scheme based on homomorphic encryption and decentralization, which uses the Paillier homomorphic encryption method to ensure that the voting results are not leaked until the election is over. In addition, the scheme applies signatures and two layers of encryption to the ballots. First, the ballot is homomorphically encrypted using the homomorphic public key; then, the voter uses the private key to sign the ballot; and finally, the ballot is encrypted using the public key of the counting center. By signing the ballots and encrypting them in two layers, the security of the ballots in the transmission process and the establishment of the decentralized scheme are guaranteed. The security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can guarantee the completeness, verifiability, anonymity, and uniqueness of the electronic voting scheme. The performance analysis shows that the computational efficiency of the proposed scheme is improved by about 66.7% compared with the Fan et al. scheme (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.future.2019.10.016).
A Highly Efficient Secure Electronic Auction Protocol with Full Anonymity and Fairness

Abstract:The protection of bidder privacy and the prevention of bidder default are the keys in the designing of secure auction protocol. But up to now, the research on both of them is still very weak. Aiming at this drawback, this paper designed a new secure and efficient auction protocol. Using the digital signature technology and bit commitment protocol, it not only guarantees the non-repudiation and anonymity of bidders, but also ensures that nobody can manipulate others in the whole auction And also, this protocol achieves the valuable properties of bid secrecy and verifiability. Even when malicious bidders collude with auctioneers, it is still secure and valid. More importantly, this protocol supports the second-price principle and optimal distribution of goods. Compared with previous works, this protocol provides better extensibility and higher efficiency, and is suitable for large-scale distributed auction.

Abstract:With the widespread use of mobile devices, authentication and privacy of identification become important issues. We analyzed the security flaws and shortcomings of a delegation-based authentication protocol which was proposed by Caimu Tang, et al., and provided an improved protocol. We use elliptic-curve cryptography and hash chain to ensure the safety of system in our scheme. The research results reveal that the improved protocol can not only corrects the security flaws but also improve the efficiency of key management and reduce the computational load.

Abstract:A vast number of e-voting schemes including mix-net-based e-voting, homomorphic e-voting, blind signature-based e-voting, blockchain-based e-voting, post-quantum e-voting, and hybrid e-voting have been proposed in the literature for better security and practical implementation. In this paper, we review various e-voting approaches to date. We first compare the structures, advantages, and disadvantages of the different e-voting approaches. We then summarise the security properties of the e-voting approaches in terms of their functional requirements and security requirements. In addition, we provide a comprehensive review of various types of e-voting approaches in terms of their security properties, underlying tools, distinctive features, and weaknesses. We also discuss some practical considerations in the design of e-voting systems. Subsequently, some potential research directions are suggested based on our observations.

Abstract:The most distinct character of electronic voting is that voters need not to vote at a certain ballot box. With the development of Internet, electronic voting is becoming an important field in electronic commerce. The basic security requirements for electronic voting are anonymity of the voters, privacy and fairness of the votes. In fact, electronic voting can be regarded as a multi-party computation, where distributed parties wish to securely compute the votes in electronic voting systems. In this paper, we redefined the types of parties in electronic voting by using definitions in rational multi-party computation. More specifically, voters are regarded as rational other than honest or malicious, where voting is considered as a social choice. Rational voters care about their utilities when they decide to vote. We first present a rational secret sharing scheme (RSSS) and then construct an electronic voting protocol based on this RSSS.
Towards Everlasting Privacy and Efficient Coercion Resistance in Remote Electronic Voting.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a first version of an e-voting scheme that achieves end-to-end verifiability, everlasting privacy and efficient coercion resistance in the JCJ setting. Everlasting privacy is achieved assuming an anonymous channel, without resorting to dedicated channels between the election authorities to exchange private data. In addition, the proposed scheme achieves coercion resistance under standard JCJ assumptions. As a core building block of our scheme, we also propose a new primitive called publicly auditable conditional blind signature (PACBS), where a client receives a token from the signing server after interaction; the token is a valid signature only if a certain condition holds and the validity of the signature can only be checked by a designated verifier. We utilize this primitive to blindly mark votes under coercion in an auditable manner.

Abstract:The integrity of electronic voting systems is critical in safeguarding the democratic process worldwide. This study addresses the twin challenges of bribery and coercion that undermine most existing electronic voting systems. Recognizing the limitations of current security measures, which fail to protect voter autonomy even after the disclosure of voting secrets, we propose an innovative level-five secure e-voting system. By integrating an additional setup phase, our system maintains voter volition, ensuring security even when key secrets are compromised. Utilizing cryptographic techniques, blind signatures, and subliminal channels in conjunction with smart card PIN mechanisms, our approach not only bolsters system security but also enhances its potential for widespread adoption. This work underscores the importance of advanced cryptographic methods in developing coercion-resistant electronic voting systems that prioritize voter privacy and choice.

Abstract:For actual voting, the most important thing is voter privacy. Ring signatures widely used in electronic voting protocols to protect voter privacy due to unconditional confidentiality. It has been found that electronic signature protocols based on mathematical complexity are not secure. We propose an electronic voting protocol based on quantum ring signatures. The generalized GHZ state is prepared and distributed by a trusted third party (TTP), so that all users in the ring can effectively act as voters or verifiers. Users in the ring and TTP use quantum key distribution technology to share keys and encrypt messages. The entire protocol uses one-time secret technology to further enhance the security of the voting process.

A Practical Quantum Designated Verifier Signature Scheme for E-voting Applications

Abstract:Although most of the quantum signatures can be verified by a designated receiver, they do not match the classical designated verifier signature since an indistinguishable signature cannot be efficiently simulated. To adapt quantum signatures in specific environments like E-voting and E-bidding, several quantum designated verifier signature (QDVS) schemes have been proposed. However, it is still too complicated and infeasible to implement existing QDVS schemes in practice. In this paper, we propose a practical QDVS scheme without entanglement for E-voting applications. It only involves the quantum processing part of the underlying quantum key distribution (QKD) to generate correlated key strings, which protects the communication against potential eavesdroppers. The proposed scheme can be easily and efficiently deployed over the existing QKD network without complicated quantum operations. We further show that our QDVS scheme satisfies the required main security requirements and has the capability against several common attacks.
AvecVoting: Anonymous and Verifiable E-voting with Untrustworthy Counters on Blockchain

Abstract:E-voting plays a vital role in modern social life. However, traditional e-voting systems usually rely on a trusted third party and therefore non-verifiable and prone to a single point of failure. In recent years, many researchers have tried to turn to blockchain to eliminate the vulnerabilities of e-voting systems. However, blockchain-based e-voting brings new problems in protecting voters’ privacy and ballots’ confidentiality, and causes a great performance degradation. In this paper, we propose AvecVoting, an anonymous and verifiable blockchain-based e-voting scheme, providing both strong security and high performance. Specifically, we utilize threshold encryption and one-time ring signature to protect voters’ privacy and ballots’ confidentiality. Furthermore, to improve the performance, we introduce the concept "counter" to count the ballots. Through the carefully designed RandomSortition and reputation-based PayOff algorithms based on smart contracts, AvecVoting can achieve correct counting even when some counters are untrustworthy. Our security and performance analyses show that AvecVoting provides strong security such as anonymity, non-repeatability, confidentiality, verifiability, etc., and meanwhile overcome the performance issues caused by blockchain and provides good efficiency in both voting and counting stages.
Towards Secure Virtual Elections: Multiparty Computation of Order Based Voting Rules

Abstract:Electronic voting systems are essential for holding virtual elections, and the need for such systems increases due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing that it mandates. One of the main challenges in e-voting systems is to secure the voting process: namely, to certify that the computed results are consistent with the cast ballots, and that the privacy of the voters is preserved. We propose herein a secure voting protocol for elections that are governed by order-based voting rules. Our protocol offers perfect ballot secrecy, in the sense that it issues only the required output, while no other information on the cast ballots is revealed. Such perfect secrecy, which is achieved by employing secure multiparty computation tools, may increase the voters' confidence and, consequently, encourage them to vote according to their true preferences. Evaluation of the protocol's computational costs establishes that it is lightweight and can be readily implemented in real-life electronic elections.

Abstract:Abstract The potential of electronic voting to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the voting process is immense. However, its security and privacy are still a major concern. Traditional methods of securing such systems, such as digital signatures and public key cryptography, are not always ideal when it comes to safeguarding the confidentiality of ballots. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for securing electronic voting ballots that utilizes homomorphic encryption. This method allows for the computation of ballots without needing decryption. The proposed e-voting system is composed of three servers. The first one is an e-voting server that stores the voter's information before it is sent to the tallying or decryption server. The latter two are used to calculate the total vote count and decrypt it. To evaluate the performance of this proposed system, we performed a series of tests on its various components. These included its execution time, memory usage, CPU usage, and communication overhead. The results of the tests revealed that the proposed system is secure and can maintain acceptable performance levels. The proposed system's accuracy and robustness are comparable to that of conventional e-voting systems. Its ability to withstand attacks is greatly enhanced by implementing homomorphic encryption. The proposed e-voting system we presented exhibited the security and privacy benefits of homomorphic encryption. By enabling computations on encrypted data without needing decryption, it helps protect the ballot's confidentiality and provides reliable and accurate results.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of internet technology has raised attention to the importance of electronic voting in maintaining democracy and fairness in elections. E-voting refers to the use of electronic technology to facilitate the casting and counting of votes in elections. The need for designated verification arises from concerns about voter privacy, auditability, and the prevention of manipulation. Traditional e-voting systems use cryptographic techniques for security but lack verifiable proof of integrity. Integrating e-voting with a quantum designated verifier could address these challenges by leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to enhance security and trustworthiness. In light of this, we propose a quantum e-voting scheme that uses a designated verifier signature. To ensure the confidentiality and authenticity of the voting process, the scheme uses quantum features like the no-cloning theorem and quantum key distribution. The proposed scheme has security properties like source hiding, non-transferability, and message anonymity. The proposed scheme is resistant to many quantum attacks, such as eavesdropping and impersonation. Due to designated verification, the scheme minimizes the risk of tempering. This paper provides a detailed description of the proposed scheme and analyzes its security properties. Therefore, the proposed scheme is efficient, practical, and secure.

Abstract:Electronic voting plays a key role in the functioning of modern democracies. However, existing electronic voting protocols have some disadvantages, such as inability to trace the identity of malicious voters, insecurity of the voting process, and lack of a score voting paradigm. To address these issues, we propose a novel blockchain-based publicly traceable self-tallying voting protocol that implements scored voting. The protocol enables voters to score each candidate within a specified range. At the end of voting, the candidate with the highest total score is declared the winner of the election. Meanwhile, we take advantage of traceable ring signatures and homomorphic time-lock puzzles to balance the anonymity and accountability, and guarantee time-bounded privacy of the ballots. We prove that the proposed protocol satisfies the properties of full-anonymity, linkability, public traceability and time-bounded privacy. In addition, performance analysis shows that our protocol guarantees various properties of score voting with reasonable overhead.

Abstract:In today’s digital environment, the voting system has moved from paper based to a digital system. A digital e-voting system has many properties such as transparency, decentralization, irreversibility, and non-repudiation. The growth in the digital e-voting system raises many security and transparency issues. In this paper, we used the blockchain technology in the digital electronic voting system to solve the security issues and ful?ll the system requirements. It offers new opportunities to deploy a secure e-voting system in any organization or country. The solution is far better as compared to other solutions because it is a decentralized system, containing the results in the form of bit-coins, having different locations. We will also analyze the security of our proposed voting system, which shows our protocol is more secure as compared to other solutions. The paper proposes a novel electronic voting system based on block chain that addresses some of the limitations in existing systems and evaluates some of the popular blockchain frameworks for the purpose of constructing a blockchain based e-voting system. In particular, we evaluate the potential of distributed ledger technologies through the description of a case study namely, the process of an election, and the implementation of a blockchain based application, which improves the security and decreases the cost of hosting a nation wide election.

By combining robust security and scalability, <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$S^{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> Voting provides reliable technical support for conducting large-scale elections. Utilizing advanced technologies such as <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Homomorphic Time-Lock Puzzle (HTLP)</i> and <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">one-time ring signature</i> , the system safeguards voters' privacy and ballot confidentiality. The approach involves dividing voters and miners into smaller shards, and implementing shard managing mechanisms to ensure security and enhance system efficiency. Through thorough security analysis, we demonstrate that <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$S^{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> Voting not only meets the fundamental security requirements of e-voting but also offers verifiability and strong robustness-essential elements for successful large-scale elections. Moreover, experimental results indicate that <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$S^{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> Voting significantly reduces the computational burden on individual miners and minimizes system processing time compared to existing blockchain-based e-voting solutions.

Abstract:Recently, Qiu et al. proposed a semi-quantum voting scheme based on the ring signature (International Journal of Theoretical Physics, 60: 1550–1555(2021)), in which the signer and verifier only need to measure the received particles with Z-basis and perform some classical simple encryption/decryption operations on the classical message. Although their scheme is very efficient, it cannot resist the eavesdropping attacks and forgery attack. In this paper, first, the eavesdropping attacks on Qiu et al.'s scheme are proposed. Second, we show the forgery attack on their scheme. Then, based on the GHZ state, an improved semi-quantum electronic voting protocol is proposed. In the new protocol, the eavesdropping check technology not only can be used to detect the eavesdropping, but also can be used to share a random number. By using the random number and the shared key, the signed vote is encrypted so that it is infeasible for the adversary to trace the signer's identity and forge a valid signed vote. The new protocol overcomes all the security drawbacks of the old protocol. What is more, it has better practicability and efficiency than the similar semi-quantum voting protocols.
