Abstract:Although creativity is a widely praised merit, the psychological costs that an employee may pay for being creative are less examined. The present study advances the research paradigm on the dark side of creativity by focusing on the negative psychological state (social alienation) of creative employees. By building on the studies on the homophily principle and on the cultural perspective of creativity, we investigated why creative employees are more likely to experience social alienation. Drawing on the social capital theory, we point out that social alienation of creative employees depends on their networking ability and harmony enhancement motive. A two-wave survey among 311 employees from 59 Chinese organizations supported the hypotheses. Implications of the findings are discussed for creativity and alienation literature as well as management practice.

Abstract:The need to design structures for ever harsher environments, to greater heights and spans, with greater controllability and durability, and of greater economy and safety, calls for creative solutions by today's structural engineers. This paper examines the issue of fostering structural engineering creativity in students, which does not appear to have been discussed in the open literature. The paper begins with a brief discussion of creativity followed by an analysis of the design process as a creative process. This analysis identifies the deficiencies in the current approach of teaching structural analysis which emphasises the mastery of skills for quantitative analysis hut neglects the development of structural insight and an ability for divergent thinking. A number of measures which may be able to rectify these deficiencies are then discussed These include the imparting of qualitative-analysis skills in students, the use of structural paradoxes to develop problem-solving skills, and a stronger emphasis in teaching on links between structural forms and functional attributes and between different structural forms.

Abstract:Employee creativity has become one of the determinants that enhance the competitiveness of enterprises.Studies have found that the organizational climate is essential for employee creativity;however,the mechanism through which the organizational climate affects employee creativity is still not well understood.The key to stimulating creativity lies in understanding the mental states of those engaged in creative work.Therefore,intrinsic motivation and mental involvement are both potential mediators of the relationships between organizational climate and employee creativity.An analysis of data obtained from 181 employees in various enterprises of Zhejiang province indicates that a supportive organizational climate is positively associated with employee creativity.This relationship was shown to be mediated by intrinsic motivation and mental involvement.These findings suggest that organizations should pay great attention to the mental states of employees while developing a supportive organizational climate in order to promote employee creativity.

Abstract:The creative achievements of eminent genius in Chinese history are of enormous interest. There is, however, uncertainty about the accurate measurement of eminence and creativity. The most tenable measurement approach is historiometric. Nearly all historiometric research on eminence and creative achievement has involved Western samples. The present investigation used historiometry to test two hypotheses about creative achievement with Eastern samples. These point to developmental adversity (DA) and the "madness‐to‐genius link" thought to facilitate unusual cognitive patterns and thus a creative capacity. Here, historiometric methods were applied to a sample of 55 eminent scientists in the Chinese Tang and Song dynasties. DA and mental illness did not significantly predict Chinese scientists' creative outcomes. Other diversifying experiences, such as religious beliefs, migration, and role model mentors, had a positive relationship with eminence and creative achievement. The Tang and Song dynasties had different religious structures, so religion had a different impact on the creative achievements of scientists. In the Tang Dynasty, religion could positively predict the creative achievements of scientists, while in the Song Dynasty it could not. These findings warrant further research using other eminent creators in Chinese history.

Abstract:Background: Yu Dafu, arguably one of the greatest writers in modern Chinese history, is characterized by critics as having a sentimental and decadent style. His life is clearly marked by mood bipolarity, and it seems that his creativity was affected by extreme emotional states. However, this link remains unclear. Methods: Yu's self-assessments in his works and letters are analyzed from the perspective of current psychiatric classifications. Examples are extracted from his writing career and habits to help illuminate the relationship between mental disorders and literary creativity. Results: Yu's writing career seems to be divided into four blocks. He was in a deep depression when he studied abroad and taught in China and experienced a hypomanic episode afterward, when he created a magazine and fell in love. The pattern of his mood changes is consistent with the symptoms of bipolar II disorder. His maintenance of a high degree of literary productivity alongside his anguish during depressive episodes may suggests mixed states. Conclusions: Mood changes shaped Yu's life and writing career. Depressive and hypomanic moods enhanced his creativity in several ways, and some situations in his life indicate that writing and literary pursuits also have reverse effects on one's mental state. The perspective that mental disorders are seen as a certain profile of literary career can help us to better understand the writers. Psychopathology

Abstract:The definition, natural features and appraisal methods of the talent is the focus of the national talent conference held recently. First, the paper outlines various talent views at all times and in all over the world and analyzes its real influence that exerts on the development of talent. It is suggested that typical talent view includes intelligence view, education view, talent view, personnel management view and human resource view. Second, pointing out that the competence and its systematic structure is the natural features of talents; the paper suggests four subsystems of the talent work competence system which includes the foundational qualification, inner core, behavior way and performance indicator of the talent's competence. Last, it explores how to appraise the talent's competence and performance in the human resource development view, and argues that the appraisal of competence and performance should utilize the view of system, dynamic and strategy. Besides, much attention should be paid to the appraisal of the moral factors such as creative mind and responsibility.

Abstract:Existing research has consistently supported a relationship between creative achievement and specific personality traits (e.g. openness to experience). However, such work has largely focused on univariate associations, potentially obscuring complex interactions among multiple personality factors, rendering an incomplete picture of the creative personality. We applied a psychometric network approach to characterize the multidimensional personality structure of highly creative individuals in the arts ("artists") and sciences ("scientists"), using data from three samples ( N = 4,015): college students, a representative adult sample, and the Big-C project of eminent creative professionals. Replicating past work, we found that artists showed reliably higher levels of openness to experience compared to scientists and a control group of less creative people. Psychometric network analysis revealed that artists were characterized by higher connectivity (i.e. co-occurrence) with other personality traits for openness, indicating that openness may be more heterogeneous in how it co-occurs with other personality traits in highly creative people. Across all three samples, we found that the scientists' personality network structure was more cohesive than the personality network of artists and the control group, indicating greater homogeneity in the personality characteristics of scientists. Our findings uncover a constellation of traits that give rise to creative achievement in the arts and sciences.

Abstract:Dissipative configuration theory is one of the self-organizing theories of system science emerging in the past three decades.The psychological system,being a highly complicated self-organizing system,should firstly become opened if it wants operate orderly.Furthermore,recent study of psychology shows that the development and movement of psychological system can only be realized through the insistent process of exchanging material,energy and information with the exoteric environment.It is not difficult to perceive through identification that psychological field of creativity is a typical dissipative configuration system with self-organizing characteristics.This article will use the relevant theories of dissipative configuration to elaborate on the prerequisite and mental mechanism of psychological field of creativity,especially the relationship between its structure,function and fluctuation.

Abstract:The associative theory of creativity states that creativity is associated with differences in the structure of semantic memory, whereas the executive theory of creativity emphasises the role of top-down control for creative thought. For a powerful test of these accounts, individual semantic memory structure was modelled with a novel method based on semantic relatedness judgements and different criteria for network filtering were compared. The executive account was supported by a correlation between creative ability and broad retrieval ability. The associative account was independently supported, when network filtering was based on a relatedness threshold, but not when it was based on a fixed edge number or on the analysis of weighted networks. In the former case, creative ability was associated with shorter average path lengths and higher clustering of the network, suggesting that the semantic networks of creative people show higher small-worldness.

Abstract:Creativity has long been a popular research question among psychologists. Studies in the past few decades have explored the effect of both internal individual factors and external environmental factors on creativity. The findings help shed light on how we can cultivate and further tap creativity. With the increasing role of culture in the study of psychology in the recent decade, researchers have now begun to turn their attention to the study of how culture can influence creativity. Answering this question in a scientific way is of profound significance to the ongoing educational reform in China. Based on the unique thinking style of Chinese people and focusing on knowledge workers engaged in creative activities, our study explored the relationships among thinking style, organizational commitment and creativity of Chinese employees. We theorized that the thinking style of connection and change would influence employee creativity both directly and indirectly. Data analysis from a sample of 134 Chinese subordinates supported our hypothesis, indicating that connection was correlated positively to creativity, whereas change was correlated negatively. Furthermore, connection was found to have a moderating effect on the relationship between organizational commitment and creativity; and the influence of change on employee creativity was partially mediated by organizational commitment. Our findings are of great theoretical and practical significance for understanding the mechanisms the effect of thinking style.

Abstract:Cultivating innovative talents in the humanities and social sciences is a pivotal element in the development of high-level innovative talents with a direct impact on a nation's superstructure and economy. Nevertheless, this area has often been a weak link in the talent market. In response to this challenge, Chinese universities have initiated the "New Humanities and Social Sciences" reform, emphasizing interdisciplinary education to nurture high-quality talents. However, the impact of interdisciplinary education within this context on the creativity of humanities and social science students, along with the intricate underlying mechanisms, remains a question yet to be fully answered. To address these issues, using survey data from 184 students majoring in humanities and social sciences in Sichuan Province of China, we employed structural equation modeling to explore the impact of interdisciplinary education on the creativity of humanities and social science students, the moderating effect of metacognitive awareness and the mediating role of knowledge integration ability. The research findings unequivocally affirm the significantly positive influence of interdisciplinary education on the creativity of humanities and social science students. Knowledge integration ability mediates the relationship between interdisciplinary education and creativity. Furthermore, metacognitive awareness plays a moderating role in the relationship between knowledge integration ability and creativity.
