Abstract:Effects of cutting age on short day induced flower bud differentiation and flower quality of cut chrysanthemum Seiun (Chrysanthemum morifolium Tzvel.) were studied.Flower bud differentiation, flowering process and flower quality were investigated in short day treated cuttings which were at different ages by modulating cutting and planting date. The results showed that cutting age was vital for flower bud differentiation and flower quality. The younger a cutting age was,the later the flower bud initiated. When 0 d(the day on the planting date) seedling was subjected to the short day treatment,it took 18 days for the flower bud induction and initiation. However, when the cutting age is 28 d or more,it took only 4 days for accomplishment of the above process. The younger a cutting age was,the longer the process for flower bud induction and initiation took, consequently the later the flowering date was,the poorer flower quality was.4 d is the shortest threshold for short day flower bud differentiation inducing. 28 d is the physiological mature age that is perceivable to flower bud differentiation inducing. In order to meet the standard for export of cut chrysanthemum, the cuttings should be at least 35 d old before it is subjected to flower bud differentiation inducing.
