Abstract:It is well known that the survival rate of cotton seedlings is low, and the growth and development status at this stage is crucial to improve productivity. Plant hormones are important factors that promote the growth and development of cotton seedlings. Growth regulators have the same function as plant hormones. The purpose of this research is to explore the effects of different concentrations of growth regulators on cotton root morphological parameters and enzyme activities, and to find suitable plant growth regulators and their optimal concentrations to improve the growth of the cotton seedling root system. Three cotton varieties, "Zhongmian 619" (Z619), "Xinluzao 27" (Z27), and "Xinluzao 39" (Z39), and three growth regulators, gibberellin (GA3), salicylic acid (SA), and paclobutrazol (PP333), at three concentrations were used in our experiment. In Z619 and Z27, 0.050 mg/L GA3 significantly increased the total root length. Similarly, 0.010 mmol/L SA significantly increased the root growth parameters of Z619 and Z39. In Z619, 0.1 mg/L PP333 significantly increased the total root length and total surface area and reduced the average root diameter. For all three cotton varieties, 0.050 mg/L GA3 increased peroxidase (POD) activity in the roots. In Z27 and Z39, 0.80 mg/L GA3 increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the roots. All SA concentrations increased SOD activity in roots of Z619 and Z27; 0.10 mg/L PP333 significantly increased SOD and POD activities in the roots of Z619 and significantly increased SOD activity in Z27. Principal component analysis indicated that 0.10 mmol/L SA was the optimal treatment for promoting the development of the roots of Z619 and 0.050 mmol/L SA was the optimal treatment for promoting the development of the roots of Z27 and Z39.

Abstract:The results showed that with small dose at square-bloom stage and big dose at peak flowering stage, the regulator Wenzaofeng optimized plant-types of cotton, improved root vigor and leaf photosynthetic rate, enhanced accumulation of dry matter and weight of cotton bolls, yielded temporal and spatial boll distribution, and increased high-quality bolls. Compared with the control, cotton lint yield was increased by 22.9%.

Abstract:In order to determine the effect of newly developed biodegradable liquid mulch (BDLM) on soil temperature, seed germination, and seedling growth of upland cotton, an experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Experiment Station of Zhejiang University in 2018 and 2019. The results showed that BDLM exhibited significant improvement with respect to soil temperature, cotton seed germination rate, stem and leaf biomass (P<0.05) compared with bare soils. In comparison with plastic mulch, BDLM had no significant effects on soil temperature and cotton seed germination rate. In order to evaluate the effect of BDLM residues on cotton seedling growth under different soil types, a pot trial was carried out in a growth chamber. The results revealed that BDLM residues had significant effect on cotton seed germination rate. The interaction of soil types and BDLM residues had significant effects on chlorophyll content, leaf area index (LAI) and soil moisture content (P<0.05). The highest chlorophyll content was observed from loam soils with BDLM residues, and the highest leaf area index was observed from clay soils with plastic residues, and lowest moisture content was observed from traditional loam soils. In conclusion, BDLM has positive effect on cotton growth, however further researches should be proposed during cotton harvesting stage.

Abstract:Cotton bollworm (Heliothis armigera) is a major pest of cotton and other crops. It is important to understand the mechanisms of insecticide tolerance of cotton bollworm on cotton cultivars with host plant resistance to this insect pest. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of cotton pigment glands and their gossypol on the growth, development and insecticide tolerance of cotton bollworm. Three pairs of cotton isogenic lines with glanded versus glandless leaves, as well as artificial diets with 5 levels of gossypol, were used to raise cotton bollworm larvae for five generations. The growth, development and insecticide tolerance of larvae were studied. The results indicated that the cotton pigment glands and higher levels of gossypol resulted in a significant decrease in larval weights and moth eclosion rates and delayed the development of larvae and pupae. Larvae that fed on glanded cotton leaves were significantly more tolerant to two insecticides, cyhalothin and monocrotophos, than those fed on glandless cotton leaves. LD50 values were only increased where they were in amount per unit body weight, and not where were calculated in amount per individual. Also the insecticide tolerance of cotton bollworm larvae increased as the gossypol content was raised from 0 to 0.225% in artificial diets. Meanwhile, the activities of two detoxifying enzymes, carboxylesterase and glutathione s-transferase, were significantly higher in the larvae fed on glanded cotton leaves than those fed on glandless cotton leaves. The activities of two enzymes also increased greatly with the increase of gossypol content from 0 to 0.225% in artificial diets. Across 5 generations of feeding and investigation, the significant inhibition effect on larval growth and larval tolerance to two pesticides were found to be only associated with the feeding by current generation, but were not related to previous diets. The activities of two detoxifying enzymes in larvae were also not enhanced significantly when they were fed continuously on glanded cotton leaves or artificial diet with high gossypol. These results indicated that pigment glands and higher levels of gossypol not only inhibited the growth of cotton bollworm larvae but also enhanced their insecticide tolerance. However, the inhibition effect and enhanced insecticide tolerance were inducible but could not be accumulated or inherited. These results will help us better understand the interaction and co-evolution of insecticide tolerance in larvae of cotton bollworm and host chemical components, and also has provided useful information on cotton bollworm management in cotton production, especially in glandless cotton.
The Effects of Commercial Glyphosate Herbicide on the Seedlings of Transgenic Cotton with Glyphosate Resistance

Abstract:The effects of two commercial glyphosates,10% glyphosate aqueous solution and 95% glyphosate powder,on the seed germination and seedling growth of transgenic cotton with glyphosate resistance were studied,using the transgenic glyphosate-resistant cotton germplasm lines,G6-7 and G6-8,as the materials,and their non-transgenic genetic background cultivar,CCRI-49,as control.All the seedlings of CCRI-49 died on the media with 0.2 mmol·L-1 10% glyphosate aqueous solution or 0.2 mmol·L-1 95% glyphosate powder,indicating that CCRI-49 is very sensitive to both types of glyphosate.The glyphosate resistant cotton germplasms with EPSPS-G6 gene expressed an excellent resistance to glyphosate when they were treated with 95% glyphosate powder,but were seriously damaged when treated with 10% glyphosate aqueous solution.The germination percentage of transgenic cotton germplasm with EPSPS-G6 gene declined by 25%～75% when they were treated with 12.0 mmol·L-1 10% glyphosate aqueous solution,which was significantly lower than that with treatment of the same concentration of 95% glyphosate powder.The differences were also significant between the two types of glyphosates in fresh weight,leaf weight,root weight,hypocotyl length,soluble protein increment and POD activity of cotton seedlings.The present experiment indicated that some of commercial glyphosate products may contain some harmful substances affecting the growth and development of glyphosate-resistant cotton,and therefore should be used carefully in transgenic glyphosate-resistant cotton field.
Effects of Different Planting Patterns on Soil Temperature, Water Use and Growth of Cotton

Abstract:This study was undertaken to examine the effects of flat planting,furrow sowing and film-mulching-bed planting on soil temperature,water use and growth of cotton.Results showed that film-mulching-bed planting increased soil temperature by increasing the daily maximum temperature in the early growth stages of cotton.After flowering,the effects were not obvious.At the same time film-bed and furrow sowing could conserve soil water and reduce soil evaporation.The amount of field water use under film-bed planting was significantly lower than that under furrow and flat sowing by 62.4% and 25.3% in the growth season of 2010,while by 26.1% and 10.3% in 2011.As a result,cotton net photosynthetic rate,biomass and final yield under film-mulching-bed planting were higher than that under furrow and flat planting.Compared with flat sowing,water use efficiency under film-bed and furrow planting was obviously improved by 62.4% and 25.3% for the season of 2010,while by 26.1% and 10.3% in 2011.Though furrow planting was better in soil moisture conservation than flat planting,no significant difference was found on the cotton yield of the two practices.

Abstract:Chemical regulation has beneficial effects on the growth, yield, and fiber quality of cotton with different plant architectures. This study aimed to investigate the combined effects of chemical regulators such as mepiquat chloride (1,1-dimethyl-piperidiniuchloride, DPC), chlormequat chloride (CCC), thidiazuron (TDZ), and ethephon (ETH) during the growth period of cotton. Different combinations of chemical regulators were applied to examine the growth, development, yield, and quality of cotton. The results showed that the application of different chemical regulators had varying effects on the yields of the two cotton varieties with distinct plant architecture. Specifically, K1C1 (before and after topping with 1:1 25% DPC, 50% TDZ, and 40% ETH) and K2C2 (before topping with 25% DPC and after topping with 50% CCC, 50% TDZ, and 40% ETH) were sprayed on 'Wankemian-1' and 'Wanmian-191', thereby increasing the cotton yield. The K2C2 treatment increased the upper half mean length and fiber strength of the two varieties but decreased the fiber length uniformity index. The fiber strength, fiber length uniformity index, and spinning consistency index of 'Wankemian-1' were higher than those of 'Wanmian-191'. Based on comprehensive yield, quality, and economic benefits, K1C1 and K2C2 were determined to be the most effective chemical regulators of 'Wankemian-1' and 'Wanmian-191', respectively.

Abstract:With the same species of soybean Dongnong434 as raw material,plant growth regulator used for chemical control.Different regulators(three iodine acid,nitric acid rare earth and 2-N,N-diethylamino ethyl acetate) are used on the effect of soybean yield,and physiological characteristics and some internal storage material structure change.The results showed that the development of different stages in the soybean sprayed with different plant growth regulator,but its yield and characters than the control group improved significantly.Some physical and chemical indicators have been increased,including use of rare earth nitrate regulators on soybean grain protein and fat content increased effect is the most obvious.Growth regulator cells can impact on the microstructure of stored cell of soybean,the content of soybean seeds cells of the storage material was increased,and the shape of protein was more large at seed filling stage.For the regulator effects on soybean growth and promotion of crop planting to provide some theoretical basis.
The Effect of 20% Confider SL Applied by Different Methods on Growth,Development and Fiber Quality of Cotton

Abstract:There were many papers researching the effect of cultivation on growth,development and fiber quality of cotton,however,the impact of pesticide on it was rarely studied.Based on the study of 20% Confider SL applied in different methods on cotton development and fiber quality,the results showed that the development of cotton plant by treatments of 20% Confider SL foliar application are stronger than that by control,plant size by treatments of 80 g/667 m2 is the strongest comparing with all other treatments,and the number of bolls,the lint percentage are higher as well.Although the plant size is bigger than that of control by treatments of 80 g/667 m2,the numbers of bolls are fewer.It seems that the foliar application showed better effect in the development of cotton than treatments of 20% Confider SL applied in watering root.However,treatments of 20% Confider SL applied in watering root shows better effects on cotton fiber qualities,especially in fiber length,length uniformity,elongation,the index of short fiber as well as textile index.In summary,the treatments of 20% Confider SL foliar application display the good function on cotton development;whereas the treatments of 20% Confider SL applied in watering root obviously improve the fiber quality.

Abstract:The development of cotton (Gossypiwn hirsutum L) floral bud prior to flowering is fundamental for yield formation since it is the initial step in the fruiting cycle. However, little information is available on the early reproductive stage of cotton subjected to plant growth regulators (PGRs). A 2-year experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of gibberellic acid (GA(3)), N6-benzyladenine (6-BA) and N, N-dimethyl piperidinium chloride (DPC) with two application methods [(A) seed soaking and (B) foliar spraying at squaring stage] on cotton floral bud development, yield and yield components compared with the control (water application). The results showed that seedcotton yield increased by 6.394-7.5% and 12.1%43.3% respectively in GA(3) and 6-BA seed soaking treatments, and by 7.7%-8.5% and 8.2%-11.0% after foliar application compared to control due to increased boll numbers, which were associated with higher floral bud numbers. However, there was no response to yield for DPC treatment. Additionally, GA(3) and 6-BA significantly increased photosynthesis rate (Pn) accordingly affecting the subtending leaf carbohydrate content and translocation, resulting in higher sucrose and starch contents in floral buds, which substantially enhanced dry matter of floral buds and reduced abscission rate. Those responses in floral buds are conductive to favorable boll development, which was evidenced by higher boll retention and boll opening rate for GA(3) and 6-BA application relative to control. Specially, 6-BA showed equal effects to GA(3) on yield and yield components with application method B, whereas induced a greater promotion than GA(3) with application method A in the following aspects: (1) square numbers, boll numbers and seedcotton yield increased more obviously under 6-BA than GA(3) ; (2) the increases in boll retention and boll opening rate were larger under 6-BA than GA(3) ; (3) 6-BA induced higher carbohydrate content in floral buds than GA(3).

Abstract:In order to explore the effects of plant growth regulators on the growth of maize under field conditions,hybrid maize Dongnong253 was used as experimental material.Two plant growth regulators,Migao and KP (the main ingredients were DCPTA and ETH) were sprayed on maize leaf on 9-leaf stage,and the water was control.The leaf photosynthetic enzyme activity,mechanical properties of stem and leaf endogenous hormone contents were measured at the five stages,and the yield measurement and correlation analysis were also been conducted.The results showed Migao and KP treatments increased leaf SPAD,Pn,Rubpc and PEPc.Also two plant growth regulators increased leaf IAA,GA and ZR content and reduced ABA content.Simultaneously improved the dry weight per unit length,puncture strength,transverse fold strength,thrust,also reduce the oblateness and grain water content.The yield of Migao content and KP content were higher than those of CK,which was increased by 6.47％ and 9.23％.There is a significant positive correlation between PEPc,RuBPc,SPAD,Pn,IAA,GA,and ZR and yield,and negative correlation between ABA and yield.

Abstract:Considering the control of trace elements in the plant growth environment,the physicochemical properties of a new kind of plant growth regulator were studied.The biology mechanism was discussed while the effect of the tested plant growth regulator on vegetables' yield and quality was also studied.The result shows that this tested plant growth regulator contains many trace elements:S、Fe、Al、Mn、Mg、Ti、Zn、K、B、Mo、Ca、Cu、etc.After application of the regulator,it has beneficial effects on vegetables growth and sprouting,vegetables chlorophyll content,and reduction of the nitrate content of vegetables.

Abstract:The use of DPC in chemical regulation exhibits a trend for developing light and simplified cultivation of cotton in China.The effects of DPC on cotton growth and development can be divided into primary responses and integrate responses.The primary responses are the direct change of the morphology and function of cotton after spraying the DPC,such as the change of agronomic traits.The integrate responses lays a foundation of primary responses,combined with other factors such as the external environment and then formation of change after combined action,such as the change of yield traits.This paper discussed the application technology of DPC in cotton,and the effects of DPC on cotton seed germination,root vigour,agronomic and yield-related traits,fiber quality,physiological and biochemical characteristics and cotton resistance.Finally,the problems of DPC application in cotton were summarized,and the potential application prospect of DPC in cotton breeding was put forward.
Effect of Topping and Retention of Vegetation Branches on Cotton

Abstract:To study the simplified cotton production technology, a field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of topping and pruning on cotton. With transgenic insect-resistance hybrid cultivars ‘Huazamian H318’as materials, 4 treatments (A, B, C, D) were set up. A, B, C, D was topping and pruning, topping and non-pruning, non-topping and non-pruning, non-topping and pruning, respectively. The results indicated that: topping could delay the mean maturity days by 5-6 days. Topping and retention of vegetation branches was beneficial to the dry matter accumulation of stem, leaf and reproductive organs. More bolls per plant, lower boll weight and lint percentage appeared to result from the retention of monopodium. When plant density was the same, non-pruning could produced the same yield as pruning. Topping and pruning had little impact on the fiber quality, so topping and non-pruning was the best.
Effects of Plastic Mulching on Yield and Maturity Performance of Bt Transgenic Cotton in a Costal Saline Field

Abstract:OBJECTIVEThe objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of plastic mulching on lint yield and maturity performance of different types of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.).METHODThree Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis ) transgenic cotton cultivars,33B,SCRC17 and SCRC15 were grown with or without plastic mulching in a costal saline field in Dongying,Shandong in 2004. With the non-mulching treatments as their respective controls,the effects of plastic mulching on lint yield,yield components,earliness and maturity performance of the 3 varieties were examined.RESULTSThe results showed that plastic mulching significantly increased lint yields of the 3 varieties. 33B、SCRC17and SCRC15 produced 20.3%,9.0% and 12.4% more lint with mulching than without mulching. Plastic mulching increased the number of bolls per unit area and the boll weight,but no effect on lint percentage was found. Maturity performance varied significantly between varieties,but there was no significant difference between non-mulching and mulching. The percentages of pre-frost lint of 33B、SCRC17and SCRC15 were raised by 4.3%、3.5%和2.8% with plastic mulching relative to their non-mulching controls,respectively.CONCLUSIONIt was suggested that plastic mulching could enhance earliness and lint yield rather than premature senescence,thus being an important pathway to realize high yield and early maturity for Bt transgenic cotton.
Effect of the Biochemical Agent with the Resistance to Cold on the Physiological and Biochemical Characteristics of Cotton Seedling

Abstract:[Objective] The basis of the extension and application of cotton seed-treating agent was provided through the investigation of its effect on the cotton seed and its mechanism.[Method] The germination of cotton seed,treated with biochemical agent with the resistance to cold,and its seedling growth under low temperature stress were researched with potted experimental method.The physiological and biochemical index: the relative content of water,chlorophyll and proline,the transpiration rate of cotton leaf,was analyzed.[Result] Under both room temperature and low temperature stress,the application of the agent could improve the rate of cotton seedling emergence and its growth,and also,raise the relative content of water and chlorophyll,the transpiration rate of content,meanwhile,promote the accumulation of the osmolyte—proline,reduce the toxicity of MDA and intensify the activity of catalase.The effect of the agent on cotton seed germination and seedling growth under the low temperature stress was more obvious than that under the room temperature.[Conclusion] The biochemical agent with the resistance to cold had better efficiency on the improvement of the metabolism of cotton seed and cotton seedling for its stronger resistance to cold.

Abstract:Salinity stress significantly hampers cotton seed germination and seedling growth. Employing plant growth regulators stands out as an effective strategy to mitigate salt stress. In this study, we assessed the impact of varying concentrations of natural composite salt conditions (0%, 0.6%, and 1.2%) on cotton seed germination, seedling growth, and physiology. Additionally, we explored the effects of compound sodium nitrophenolate (CSN: 2 mg·L−1 and 10 mg·L−1), 24-epibrassinolide (EBR: 0.02 mg·L−1 and 0.1 mg·L−1), and gibberellic acid (GA: 60 mg·L−1 and 300 mg·L−1), against a control (CK: distilled water) group. The results indicate that with an increase in the composite salt concentration, the germination potential (GP) and germination rate (GR) of cotton seeds gradually decrease. Simultaneously, the fresh weight and root vitality of seedlings also correspondingly decrease, while the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation increases. Under high-salt (1.2%) conditions, soaking treatments with CSN and EBR significantly enhance both GP (45–59% and 55–64%) and GR (30–33% and 39–36%) compared to the CK. However, the GA treatment does not increase the GP and GR of cotton. Moreover, under high-salt (1.2%) conditions, CSN and EBR treatments result in the increased activities of superoxide dismutase (56–66% and 71–80%), peroxidase (20–24% and 37–51%), and catalase (26–32% and 35–46%). Consequently, cotton exhibits a relatively good tolerance to natural composite salts. Soaking treatments with CSN and EBR effectively improve cotton germination by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities, thereby strengthening cotton's tolerance to salt stress. These findings offer new insights for enhancing the salt tolerance of cotton.

Abstract:We studied the effects of feeding on different cotton cultivars with different gossypol contents on the development, reproduction and food plant utilization of three successive generations of Cotton Bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner). Significantly higher larval survival rates were observed in three successive generations of H. armigera fed on cotton cultivar "ZMS13" compared with cultivars "M9101" and "HZ401". There was a significant decrease in fecundity in the first generation compared with the second and third generations of cotton bollworms fed on "M9101" and "ZMS13". Cotton bollworm generation significantly influenced mean relative growth rate, relative growth rate and relative consumption rate. The relative growth rate significantly decreased in three successive generations of H. armigera fed on the high-gossypol cultivar "M9101" compared with those fed on low-gossypol cultivar "ZMS13". However, a significantly higher relative growth rate was recorded in the third generation than in the first generation fed on "M9101". Measurements of development and food utilization at the individual and population levels over more than one generation ought to provide a more meaningful prediction of long-term and population dynamics of the cotton bollworm.
