Abstract:This work is devoted to the development of methods for constructing asymptotic formulas as x→∞ of a fundamental system of solutions of linear differential equations generated by a symmetric two-term differential expression of odd order. The coefficients of the differential expression belong to classes of functions that allow oscillation (for example, those that do not satisfy the classical Titchmarsh–Levitan regularity conditions). As a model equation, the fifth-order equation i2p(x)y′′′′′+p(x)y′′′′′+q(x)y=λy, along with various behaviors of coefficients p(x),q(x), is investigated. New asymptotic formulas are obtained for the case when the function h(x)=−1+p−1/2(x)∉L1[1,∞) significantly influences the asymptotics of solutions to the equation. The case when the equation contains a nontrivial bifurcation parameter is studied.

Abstract:It is shown that if the equation where R ( z , f ) is rational in both arguments and , has a transcendental meromorphic solution, then the equation above reduces into one out of several types of difference equations where the rational term R ( z , f ) takes particular forms. Solutions of these equations are presented in terms of Weierstrass or Jacobian elliptic functions, exponential type functions or functions which are solutions to a certain autonomous first-order difference equation having meromorphic solutions with preassigned asymptotic behavior. These results complement our previous work on the case of the equation above and thus provide a complete difference analogue of Steinmetz' generalization of Malmquist's theorem.

Abstract:In this work, we are concerned with existence of solutions for a nonlinear second-order distributional differential equation, which contains measure differential equations and stochastic differential equations as special cases. The proof is based on the Leray--Schauder nonlinear alternative and Kurzweil--Henstock--Stieltjes integrals. Meanwhile, examples are worked out to demonstrate that the main results are sharp.

Abstract:We are surveying recent results that describe second order differential operators having only algebraic solutions in the sense of Galois theory. We call such operators algebraic. For hypergeometric operators, this problem was studied by Schwarz and Klein who also gave results that describe all second order linear differential operators with a full set of algebraic solutions. Starting from their work, we see algebraic operators as pull-backs of algebraic hypergeometric operators via Belyi functions. We are surveying some of the main results describing second order operators with a full set of algebraic solutions, especially those obtained by using the properties of the pull-back functions. Using the Grothendieck correspondence, these properties transfer to properties for their corresponding dessins d’enfants.

Abstract:In this paper, the growth of the meromorphic solutions of the equation f” = L(z,f)(f')^2 + M(z,f)f' + N(z,f) where L, M, N are birational functions, is studied. We prove that if L(z, f) satisfies a quite general condition, then f must be of finite order. Furthermore, if (L(z, f)≡0, and M(z, f), N(z, f) are polynomials in f, then the order of any entire solution of the equation is a positive integral multiple of 1/2.
