Abstract:Chinese jujube is one of the earliest domesticated fruit trees in the world. This fruit crop is becoming increasingly popular globally for its outstanding adaptability to marginal land and a broad range of climate conditions. There is a growing demand by growers and consumers for new cultivars with improved yields, earliness, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and fruit quality attributes. Breeding jujube for disease resistance is still in its infancy despite the consensus that disease is the top-ranking production constraint and growing disease resistant cultivars is the most sustainable and cost-effective approach for diseases management. Major knowledge gaps remain to be filled in the current breeding scheme for enhancing disease resistance. These knowledge gaps include, but are not limited to (1) a lack of understanding of jujube pathogens in terms of their taxonomy, epidemiology and genetic diversity; (2) a lack of standardized screening methods to identify host resistance; (3) a high rate of germplasm mislabeling; and (4) ineffective production of hybrid progenies. Nonetheless, recent progress in utilization of male sterile parents in controlled crosses, coupled with mounting genomic information on both pathogens and jujube, will likely speed up the combination of host resistance with other horticultural traits. This article reviews the status of jujube disease resistance breeding and suggests future research needs for developing disease resistant cultivars of Chinese jujube. Although the review focuses on jujube breeding programs in China, the summarized information should be useful to researchers in the international jujube community as well.

Abstract:The main progresses in research on improvement of jujube cultivars and the basis of cross breeding were reviewed. The achievements of seedling selection and the basic research on cross breeding, including biology of pollination, fertilization, embryo development and culture and so on were mentioned. In addition, the identification of male sterility, the inheritance of characteristics in seedlings and identification of hybrids from open pollinated progenies using biological technique were summarized. The problems and prospect in Chinese jujube breeding are also discussed.

Abstract:Jujube fruit is rich in nutrition, and is easily infected by pathogenic fungi during fruit development and postharvest, which leads to fruit deterioration and quality degradation, and brings great economic loss to production. The research progress of jujube fruit pathogenic fungi was reviewed in this paper. The researchers isolated two kinds of fungi, yeast and mold, from different kinds of fruit, it mainly includes Alternaria alternata, Alternaria tenuissima, Phomopsis, Fusobacterium, Rhizomorpha, Trichothecium roseum, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum and so on. Among them, the types of fungi isolated from different cultivars are different. In addition to conventional techniques, people try to control jujube fruit fungal diseases from three aspects: new environment-friendly fungicides, endophytic fungi and broad-spectrum antagonistic strains.

Abstract:Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), an important fruit tree species native to China, has a cultivation and utilization history of more than 7,000 years. It is distributed throughout China now with a very high diversity of germplasms which provides a wide background for breeding. In this paper, the breeding objectives, techniques and achievements in Chinese jujube were reviewed and summarized. The breeding objectives on Chinese jujube changed with the development of economy and the improvement of people's living standards from focusing on high yield and big fruit to good quality, high nutrition, easy-management and high resistance to fruit shrinking and cracking. Nowadays, Chinese jujube breeding practice includes systematic selection, cross breeding, polyploid breeding and transgenic breeding. Selection from bud mutation, local rare germplasms and seedlings, is still a main way to obtain new cultivars in Chinese jujube. Cross breeding of Chinese jujube is very difficult owning to its small flower, cleistogamy phenomenon as well as high rate of embryo abortion. In view of the above obstacles limiting cross breeding, we first carried out researches on special germplasms screening. We found a number of germplasms suitable for parents, such as male sterile, self-fruitless or self-sterile germplasms, and those rich in cyclic nucleotides, saponins, flavones, triterpenic acids, water soluble polysaccharides, vitamin C, or resistant to fruit cracking or shrinking etc. Thereafter, techniques of controlled hybridization, embryo rescue and marker assisted selection were explored to increase the hybridization efficiency and improved in cross breeding. Polyploid breeding were even better practiced and a number of pure polyploids were acquired by combining colchicine application with in vivo bud regeneration technique. An obvious progress has been made in transgenic breeding recently. Some new excellent cultivars for table and dehydration were also briefly induced in the paper.

Abstract:The physiological disorder and infectious diseases of jujube(Zizyphus jujuba Mill.) during storage are summarized in this paper. The physiological disorders include alcoholic fermentation, browning and cold injury. Preharvest infection and wound infection of pathogenic microorganism are the major factors to induce jujube fruit rot during storage. The sorts of pathogenic microorganism include bacterium and fungi. The pathological mechanisms of latent infectious diseases are the main problems for studying in the future. The fruit diseases can be controlled by some basic ways such as preharvest integrated pathogen management, avoiding physical injury during harvest and handling, disinfecting treatment before storage. Biological control is a promising approach to reduce the storage diseases of jujube fruit.

Abstract:Witches'Broom is the most destructive disease of jujube.Study on the Jujube tree disease have been the focus of the study at home and abroad since 1940s,researcher had been made a large quantity researchers on pathogeny elimination and detection of the Witches'Broom. This paper introduced the methods of the pathogeny elimination,including heat treatment,apical meristem culture,micrografting in vitro,selecting high resistant varieties,chemical control and biocontrol and so on.The detection methods of the Witches'Broom disease were also introduced,including electron microscopical and molecular techniques.At last,the advantage and disadvantage of the methods were discussed,the compound methods to eliminate and detect the Witches'Broom were recommend.

Abstract:Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is the most important species among the 170 species of genus Ziziphus Mill., with cultivation area of approximately 1.5 million ha, annual production of more than 8 million t, and annual total output value of more than 15 billion US dollars, all ranking the first of the genus. Chinese jujube is originated from the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River in China and is one of the first domesticated fruit trees in the world. Up to now, it has been introduced into at least 48 countries of the five continents, but over 98% of the jujube production is still concentrated in China. There is also a certain amount of commercial jujube production in South Korea, Iran, Italy, the United States, Australia, etc. Chinese jujube is of very good environmental adaptation, early bearing, easy management, and nutritious fruit. It is of great value to the promotion of people's health and the economic and ecological construction in drought marginal regions. On the basis of analyzing the historical achievements of Chinese jujube production and research and the present status of Chinese jujube development in China, the future of jujube industry was prospected from eight aspects including breakthrough cultivars, fast investment-return orchard establishment, intelligent and efficient cultivation, prevention and control of major diseases, year-round supply of fresh jujube, modern processing, non-fruit function exploring and internationalization of jujube industry. The strategic demands, the developmental goals and the main scientific and technological countermeasures for each of the above-mentioned aspects were briefly analyzed. This paper aims to make a blueprint for the future industry development and indicate the main directions for the future research and international cooperation in Chinese jujube.

Abstract:Jujube ( Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), or Chinese date, is the most important species of Rhamnaceae, a large cosmopolitan family, and is one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees in the world. It originates from the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, the ‘mother river’ of the Chinese people. It is distributed in at least 48 countries on all continents except Antarctica and is becoming increasingly important, especially in arid and semiarid marginal lands. Based on a systematic analysis of the unique characteristics of jujube, we suggest that it deserves to be recognized as a superfruit. We summarized historical research achievements from the past 3000 years and reviewed recent research advances since 1949 in seven fields, including genome sequencing and application, germplasm resources and systematic taxonomy, breeding and genetics, cultivation theory and techniques, pest control, postharvest physiology and techniques, and nutrition and processing. Based on the challenges facing the jujube industry, we discuss eight research aspects to be focused on in the future.

Abstract:Jujube ( Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), a highly nutritious and functional fruit, is reported to have various health benefits and has been extensively planted worldwide, especially in China. Many studies have shown that bioactive components derived from jujube fruit have significant nutritional and potential biological effects. In this paper, the latest progress in research on major bioactive compounds obtained from jujube is reviewed, and the potential biological functions of jujube fruit resources are discussed. As a dietary supplement, jujube fruit is well recognized as a healthy food which contains a variety of bioactive substances, such as polysaccharides, polyphenols, amino acids, nucleotides, fatty acids, dietary fiber, alkaloids, and other nutrients. These nutrients and non-nutritive phytochemicals obtained from jujube fruit have physiological functions including anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-hyperglycemic, immunoregulatory, neuroprotective, sedative, and antiviral functions. Of note is that new constituents, including alkaloids, dietary fiber, and other bioactive substances, as well as the antiviral, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, and neuroprotective effects of jujube fruit, are systematically reviewed here for the first time. Meanwhile, problems affecting the exploitation of jujube fruit resources are discussed and further research directions proposed. Therefore, this review provides a useful bibliography for the future development of jujube-based products and the utilization of jujube nutritional components in functional foods.

Abstract:Jujube fruit, which has been regarded as an excellent product for both food and medicine. In recent years, a large number of biologically active and medicinal substances have been extracted from jujube fruits, including nascent metabolites: carbohydrate, proteins and amino acids; secondary metabolites: alkaloids, triterpenoids, saponins, phenolic acids, flavonoids and cyclic nucleotides, vitamins; and biologically active polypeptides which can be obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis. These ingredients have antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-cancer, liver-protecting, and immune-enhancing effects. Among them, antioxidant has broad application prospects in food health care, medical care, and meticulous chemical products. This paper reviews the research progress of antioxidants in jujube fruit extracts.
Identification of Resistant Cultivar for Jujube Witches' Broom Disease and Development of Management Strategies

Abstract:Jujube witches' broom disease (JWB), a destructive disease caused by phytoplasma (MLO), kills 3-5% or even more jujube trees each year in many orchards. Through 10 years' study and practice, an excellent new cultivar with very high level of resistance to JWB, named 'Xingguang' was bred and released during 2005. It could be used not only to establish new orchards free from JWB, but also to re-construct the crown of diseased tree for recovering normal growing and fruiting. At the same time, a very effective drug combination (oxytetracycline+MgSO4+citric acid) named 'Qufeng No. 1' was screened through indoor and field experiments. According to the results of a large scale field application, the cure rate and effective rate of once trunk injection of the drug combination given before blooming were 85 and 100%, respectively. The cure effects of one injection lasted for 2-3 years and even more. In addition, an integrated strategy was put forward in accordance with trees with different levels of JWB.
Establishment and Application of an in vitro Method for Identification of Resistance to Fruit Shrink Disease in Chinese Jujube

Abstract:To avoid the restrictions of field identification and quicken the screening of high resistant germ -plasms,a simple in vitro method for identification of resistance to jujube fruit shrink disease was established .The fruits were sampled before white-green ripening stage ( around the beginning of August ) , surface sterilized with 70%ethanol alcohol,treated with spraying suspension ( 107 conidial per millilitre) of the pathogens (Alternaria al-ternata (Fr.) Keissler,Phoma destructiva Plowr.and Fusicoccum spp.),then cultured in moisturizing and warming chamber at 25 ℃and 100% relative humidity,and identified according disease index .The resistance of thirty-six cultivars,thirty-three of them showed field resistance and three ones showed susceptible to jujube fruit shrink dis -ease,were tested using the newly established in vitro method,and the results showed that no germplasm reached im-mune level and seven of them behaved very high resistance ,i.e.Changjixin,Kongfusucui,Chengwudongzao,Ping-guozao ,Chuanling , Suyuanling and Liuyuexian .The disease index and development speed of diseased area were much bigger in susceptible cultivars than in resistant ones .The in vitro identification results are basically consistent with those obtained from field survey .The in vitro identification method showed much stronger selection intensity by which germplasm with higher level of resistance could be found .

Abstract:The Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), a member of the Rhamnaceae family, is an important perennial fruit tree crop of substantial economic, ecological, and nutritional value, and is also used as a traditional herbal medicine. Here, we report the resequencing of 493 jujube accessions, including 202 wild and 291 cultivated accessions at greater than 16× depth. Our population genomic analyses revealed that the Shanxi‐Shaanxi area of China was jujube's primary domestication center and that jujube was then disseminated into East China before finally extending into South China. Divergence events analysis indicated that Ziziphus acidojujuba and Ziziphus jujuba diverged around 2.7 Mya, suggesting the interesting possibility that a long pre‐domestication period may have occurred prior to human intervention. Using the large genetic polymorphism data set, we identified a 15‐bp tandem insertion in the promoter of the jujube ortholog of the POLLEN DEFECTIVE IN GUIDANCE1 (POD1) gene, which was strongly associated with seed‐setting rate. Integrating genome‐wide association study (GWAS), transcriptome data, expression analysis and transgenic validation in tomato, we identified a DA3/UBIQUITIN‐SPECIFIC PROTEASE14 (UBP14) ortholog which negatively regulate fruit weight in jujube. We also identified candidate genes which have likely influenced the selection of fruit sweetness and crispness texture traits among fresh and dry jujubes. Our study not only illuminates the genetic basis of jujube evolution and domestication and provides a deep and rich genomics resource to facilitate both crop improvement and hypothesis‐driven basic research, but also identified multiple agriculturally important genes for this unique perennial tree fruit species.

Abstract:Ziziphus jujuba Mill., as one important fruit tree cultivated in China with a long history belongs to Rhamnodiaceae genus. 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) are important active substances in jujube, whose metabolism relative to human cancer, liver and respiratory diseases are related. Studies in plants have shown that many physiological processes are associated with changes in cyclic nucleotide levels. In addition, the content of cGMP in jujube is hundreds of times higher than that in other plants. Guanosine cyclic phosphate is controlled by guanosine cyclase(GC) and guanosine-5'-triphosphate (GTP) synthesis. GC as one vital second messenger in signal transduction has attracted more and more attention in the past two decades. According to relevant research progress, the research findings of cGMP in jujube and the research progress of GC in plants are summarized.

Abstract:The genus Zizyphus , which originated in Indo-Pak and China where its cultivation dates back more than 4000 years, is widely distributed globally. Most of the commercial jujube cultivars in the world are recommended through a direct selection replaced with developed through a direct selection. Thus, it was necessary to develop superior genotypes through segregation populations. A Jujube breeding program has recently been implemented to develop improved cultivars by crossing local cultivars with Asian cultivars for drought and pest tolerance. This review describes the importance, morphology, distribution, and current cultivation practices of jujube plants. Different traditional breeding techniques regarding their limitations are discussed with close attention to breeders with a lot of useful exploration. Modern emerging tools including tissue culture, plant genetic engineering to develop transgenic cultivars, as well as molecular breeding techniques that are promising in terms of basic and applied plant sciences are discussed.

Abstract:In this article, a review of the mechanisms that have been developed to improve the efficiency of Chinese jujube (Ziziphus Jujuba Mill) was made. This fruit is considered as an economic crop in the arid and semiarid regions especially in China, where the cultivation methods alternate between traditional and intensive. In the former the trees are large and planted with relatively wide space, whereas in the latter the trees are dwarfed with tight spacing among them. Mechanisms which were studied and tested, for each cultivation method, were summarized and compared in terms of fruit collecting efficiency and rate of damage. These mechanisms were branch beating, trunk shaking, air shaking for traditional cultivation and tree shaking, canopy shaking, and vacuum suction for intensive cultivation. The comparison indicated that as the efficiency increase for any single mechanism the rate of damage increases accordingly. Therefore, a combination of mechanism would maintain the efficiency and reduce damage. In particular, a combination of a mechanism of tree shaking, developed earlier for blueberry, and trunk shaking was thought to be with high potential of low rate of damage. This article also spots on the possibilities of fully automating the post-harvest operation of fruit grading by describing a number of previous articles that have tackled fruit sorting not only for fruit processing but also for fresh market. The hope is that this review will spark the renewal of research and development of the cultivation of Chinese jujube so as to meet the increasing demand.
