Asthma questionnaire survey among the physicians of Respiratory Medicine in Shanghai area

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the overall situation of the implementation of standard methods of diagnosis and treatment of asthma by physicians in Shanghai. Methods We designed an asthma questionnaire which was completed through Shanghai Medical Association as one of the main activities of "2004 world asthma day". Results Totally 124 physicians from the hospital outpatient department(OPD) and emergency ward of different levels completed the questionnaire.In the implementation of Global Initiative for Asthma(GINA) strategy field,most physicians could answer correctly,but it should be improved in the aspect of treatment of mild persistent asthma which was relatively better-done among the attending physicians and associate professors.Those physicians from the tertiary hospitals completed the questionnaire better than those from the secondary and primary hospitals.And physicians specialized in respiratory medicine completed better than physicians of other specialties.In the treatment field,most physicians could correctly differentiate the common inhalers,but there was still some disparity among the specialists and non-specialists.In the survey of the most difficult target of GINA,most physicians thought the dysfunction of respiration,symptoms as well as the down-regulation of quality of life caused by asthma were the most difficult problem encountered,but less attention was paid to admission, emergency and the drug adverse effect. Conclusions From this survey,we conclude that it's very necessary to intensify the implementation of GINA strategy among the physicians,and we should pay more attention to the popularization of new drugs and preparations for asthmatic patients.
