Abstract:the change of altitude in terrestrial ecosystem leaded to the vertical distribution of plant communities. It was an important cause of plant diversity. Exploring the plant vertical distribution pattern and formation mechanism were critical to forest diversity protection. In this article, TWINSPAN (Two-way Indicator-Species Analysis) and CCA (Canonical Correspondence Analysis) were used to divide the woody plant communities and analyze the determinants. The results indicated: (1) the woody plants of Mao’er Mountain were divided into 7 communities. The dominant tree species of each community , in turn, were Castanopsis fabri, Castanopsis fargeisii, Schima argentea, Castanopsis lamontii, Tsuga chinensis, Tsuga longibracterata and Pinus massoniana; (2) altitude was the determinant factor of mountain plant community in middle subtropical zone; (3) soil factors, especially soil type and soil thickness, were the second important environment factors of plant community. In the protecting and restoring of mountain forest in middle subtropical zone, it was very important to select right tree species and restore measures according to plant vertical distribution pattern and formation mechanism. As a result, it would accelerate the restoring process and enhance the protective effect.
