Abstract:Literary texts constitute an important part of the history of literature and function significantly in the narration of the history of literature.They are the starting point and the end of the studies of literary history.Before the publication of A Brief History of Chinese Fiction by Lu Xun,attention paid to fiction was rather limited in the field of literary history,and there was a void of a perspective or narrative strategy incorporating a specific text history and its literature property into the historical narration.A Brief History of Chinese Fiction utterly changed the situation by citing a great amount of extracted fictional texts to show its readers directly an explicit outline of the evolution of Chinese classical fiction.Lu Xun's emphasis on texts,his peculiar understandings of literature and his insights into history are clearly shown in this book.Nevertheless,as a monograph written in certain historical period,there are some improper texts cited in it.As the studies of the history of literature and the history of fiction deepen,new citations have substituted the old ones,which is a manifestation of the academic development.In the sense of reconstructing a coordinate system for literary history,close readings of texts and extractions of meaningful episodes will change the landscape of the history of fiction.
