Abstract:The dynamic transfer and metabolism of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) from dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense to cladoceran Moina mongolica and then to the larval fish of Sciaenops ocellatus were studied under controlled conditions. It was the first time to take cladoceran not copepod as experimental object in the marine food chain concerning the transfer and metabolism of PSP toxins. The transfer and metabolism of PSP toxins happened when Sciaenops ocellatus preyed on Moina mongolica that had ingested toxic Alexandrium tamarense ATCI01 whose concentration ranged from 550 cells·mL~ -1 to 4900 cells mL~ -1 . All the trophic levels contained C_ 1+2 toxins, while neoSTX toxin was detected in the digestive gland of Sciaenops ocellatus. The ratio of α toxin (C_ 1 ) to β toxin (C_ 2 ) in the Moina mongolica was lower than that in the Alexandrium tamarense and digestive gland of Sciaenops ocellatus. C_ 1+2 toxins in larval fish reduced remarkably in the course of detoxification, and comparatively, neoSTX toxin didn't show the same tendence. The total content of PSP toxins decreased with the detoxification going except that the concentration of dinoflagellate was 550 cells·mL~ -1 .
