Abstract:About 90% of municipal solid wastes (153 million tons in 2007) are filled in landfills, which have great potential stability and pollution problems, in China. Sustainable technologies are attended to solve these problems and improve the landfill performance. These technologies can reduce landfill area through centralization and large-scale landfilling. High-performance collection and control measures of leachate and landfill gas are developed to reduce landfill pollution loading. The biodegradation process of solid waste is accelerated to increase landfill capacity. The concept of. Systems engineering. is implemented in design, operation and management of landfills to achieve a higher performance. This paper presents primary research works of mainland China in the sustainable landfill technologies, including solid-liquid-gas interaction, temporal and special variation of waste engineering properties, and control of leachate, gas, stability and pollution. Finally, aspects worthy of further research are addressed.

Abstract:Hangzhou is one of the eight pilot cities for the sorting, collection and disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in China. An overview of current status and future plan of MSW disposal in Hangzhou is carried out. The sorting ratio of MSW was estimated to be less than 25% in 2016. It imposes heavy burden on government’s plan of increasing the incineration ratio from 40% to 80% and composting 200 tons of food waste daily in 2020. Through comparison of the landfills, incineration plants and composting plants in Hangzhou, the current standards for the pollution control of MSW disposal facilities are discussed. The risk evaluation during the design period and the monitoring data disclosure during the operation period are suggested to be the mandatory provisions in the future revision of these standards. The work conducted in this paper would provide reference for other cities facing the problem of MSW disposal during the fast urbanization process.

Abstract:Sanitary landfilling is the most important methods of municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal in China. Landfill sites are always set up in mountain valley, on plain or besides seashore. A complete landfill consists of four parts: base system, cover system, leachate collecting system and gas venting system. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art landfilling technology in China and discusses the on-going and recently completed research projects dealing with the landfill disposal of MSW.

Abstract:Treatment technologies of sewage sludge are introduced,and their advantages and disadvantages are also analyzed in details.Because of the disadvantages of the traditional treatment technologies for sewage sludge,such as landfill,sea dumping and land application,thermal treatments(i.e.pyrolysis,incineration and gasification) are more attractive.Although incineration technology is the main method in use,gasification technology of sewage sludge is more prospective,and it is necessary to make further study on the technology in the future.

Abstract:With rapid economic growth and massive urbanization, the types and quantities of municipal solid waste continue to increase, and many cities have already faced the situation of “garbage siege”. Municipal solid waste not only seriously pollutes soil, water and atmosphere, but also endangers human health, influences urban landscape and damages the image of the city. This paper reviews the current status and classification of municipal solid waste in China, and discusses the solid waste treatment technologies of landfilling, incineration, composting and pyrolysis. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of these treatment technologies applied to some developed countries are evaluated to inspire the innovation of new methods and ideas for solid waste treatment.

Abstract:The actualities of disposal or treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Zhejiang Province were reviewed, and the imperfection and limitation of MSW disposal by a single way, such as landfill, incineration and composting, were summarized and discussed in the paper. As an advanced way, the integrative treatment is apt to actualize the principles of reutilization, minimization and innocuity of MSW. The system of integrative treatment based on recycling, composting, incineration and landfill of MSW was put forward. Finally, the key techniques of the realization of the integrative treatment were discussed.

Abstract:Purpose Urbanization and industrialization in China has resulted in a dramatic increase in the volume of wastewater and sewage sludge produced from wastewater treatment plants. Problems associated with sewage sludge have attracted increasing attention from the public and urban planners. How to manage sludge in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the critical issues that modern societies are facing. Methods Sludge treatment systems consist of thickening, dewatering, and several different alternative main treatments (anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, drying, composting, and incineration). Agricultural application, landfill, and incineration are the principal disposal methods for sewage sludge in China. However, sewage sludge disposal in the future should focus on resource recovery, reducing environmental impacts and saving economic costs. Results The reuse of biosolids in all scenarios can be environmentally beneficial and cost-effective. Anaerobic digestion followed by land application is the preferable options due to low economic and energy costs and material reuse. Conclusion It is necessary to formulate a standard suitable for the utilization of sewage sludge in China.

Abstract:China has endured the increasing generation of municipal solid waste; hence, environmental analysis of current waste management systems is of crucial importance. This article presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment of three waste treatment technologies practiced in Hangzhou, China: landfill with and without energy recovery, and incineration with waste-to-energy. Adopting region-specific data, the study covers various environmental impacts, such as global warming, acidification, nutrient enrichment, photochemical ozone formation, human toxicity and ecotoxicity. The results show that energy recovery poses a positive effect in environmental savings. Environmental impacts decrease significantly in landfill with the utilization of biogas owing to combined effects by emission reduction and electricity generation. Incineration is preferable to landfill, but toxicity-related impacts also need to be improved. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis shows that the benefit of carbon sequestration will noticeably decrease global warming potential of both landfill scenarios. Gas collection efficiency is also a key parameter influencing the performance of landfill. Based on the results, improvement methods are proposed. Energy recovery is recommended both in landfill and incineration. For landfill, gas collection systems should be upgraded effectively; for incineration, great efforts should be made to reduce heavy metals and dioxin emissions.
Approach of technical decision-making by element flow analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation of municipal solid waste stream

Abstract:This paper deals with the procedure and methodology which can be used to select the optimal treatment and disposal technology of municipal solid waste (MSW), and to provide practical and effective technical support to policy-making, on the basis of study on solid waste management status and development trend in China and abroad. Focusing on various treatment and disposal technologies and processes of MSW, this study established a Monte-Carlo mathematical model of cost minimization for MSW handling subjected to environmental constraints. A new method of element stream (such as C, H, O, N, S) analysis in combination with economic stream analysis of MSW was developed. By following the streams of different treatment processes consisting of various techniques from generation, separation, transfer, transport, treatment, recycling and disposal of the wastes, the element constitution as well as its economic distribution in terms of possibility functions was identified. Every technique step was evaluated economically. The Mont-Carlo method was then conducted for model calibration. Sensitivity analysis was also carried out to identify the most sensitive factors. Model calibration indicated that landfill with power generation of landfill gas was economically the optimal technology at the present stage under the condition of more than 58% of C, H, O, N, S going to landfill. Whether or not to generate electricity was the most sensitive factor. If landfilling cost increases, MSW separation treatment was recommended by screening first followed with incinerating partially and composting partially with residue landfilling. The possibility of incineration model selection as the optimal technology was affected by the city scale. For big cities and metropolitans with large MSW generation, possibility for constructing large-scale incineration facilities increases, whereas, for middle and small cities, the effectiveness of incinerating waste decreases.

Abstract:According to the “harmless, reduction and recycling” processing principle, landfill method, incineration and compost method were studied that secondary pollution and resource waste problems were unavoidable. From the perspective of circular economy, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) separation and integrated utilization technology was proposed. The composition of MSW was investigated. The influence to sorting equipment by the garbage component properties was analyzed. On the basis of the full analysis of relating technology drawbacks, the sorting equipment, such as crush equipment and air classification equipment, were designed. Organic bacterial manure is produced by organic material, which was sorting from MSW. Plastic-wood is produced by mixing plastic and wood powder. Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) is produced by papers and textile.

Abstract:The authors analyzed the influence of waste management philosophy under sustainable development principle and development of key regulations and technical guidelines such as landfill directive and packaging directive of European Commission to the waste treatment method in developed countries,and discussed the development of some of kernel waste treatment technologies including waste incineration,mechanical-biological treatment,gasification and landfill.The authors suggested that China should actively develop eco-technologies in waste treatment and the central government should supply economic support and policy guidance to these technologies and formulate sustainable waste management strategy so as to change the present passive situation of end-of-pipe treatment.

Abstract:The basic demands of municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal are the prevention of hazards to public health, reduction in the quantity and volume, and recycling of waste materials. The solid waste in China is typically of high moisture content, low heat value, and low grade quality. In this paper, the cur-rent status of MSW disposal in China, including its strong and weak aspects, is discussed, pointing out that the objective for future development should be the recycling of waste materials. Abstract:The current design of municipal solid waste landfills is primary based on a permanent storage and containment or dry cell concept. The idea is to minimize the amount of water entering the waste to restrict formation of leachate and gas to reduce environmental impacts. However, as the containment system ages it may become ineffective and introduce a long-term risk of uncontrolled leachate and gas leaks. In recent years, there has been a strong trend to shift the philosophy of landfill design from the dry cell towards a wet cell, for example, the bioreactor. The bioreactor has a lot of advantages, compared with the traditional dry-cell concept, but it is incomplete in its concept. After discussing on the advantages and disadvantages of the current landfills, the author suggests a new landfill concept, which has to be further investigated by experimental and theoretical research.

Abstract:<p>Although municipal solid waste (MSW) has a potential risk for human health and ecological environment, it is gradually considered as one of the most renewable resources. To maximize resource utilization of MSW and its elimination, numerous efforts have been devoted worldwide to develop a systematic MSW management coupled with technologies in treatment and resource utilization (TTRU). This paper mainly focuses on MSW in eight eastern coastal regions in China on the aspects of background information (MSW generation, population, gross domestic product (GDP)/gross regional product (GRP)), related laws (acts, regulations), MSW characteristics (composition, separation, collection, transport) and TTRU. Besides, emerging technologies in MSW resource utilization for waste-to-energy (WtE) and waste-to-material (WtM) are reviewed for the first time. Finally, a comparison based on above information is conducted between China and selected developed regions, namely Berlin, Tokyo, and Singapore. The findings for China are summarized as follows: (1) MSW generation keeps a strong increasing trend especially in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces, while MSW generation shows spatiotemporal variation in eastern coastal cities, provinces, and special zones; (2) MSW composition characteristics is complicated with a >50% moisture content and is dominated by 52.8–65.3% kitchen waste, 3.5–11.9% paper, and 9.9–19.1% rubber & plastics; (3) MSW management system needs to be optimized in China; (4) The MSW is treated by 52% landfill, 45% incineration and 3% composting technologies and utilization efficiency in China is much lower than that of developed countries; (5) Advanced and emerging technologies for MSW resource utilization are required and several potential WtE and WtM technologies are listed. Eventually, (6) Recommendations for developing an optimal system integrating MSW management with enhanced TTRU are presented, and technology transfer potentials from Berlin, Tokyo, and Singapore are noted.</p>

Abstract:The engineering properties of waste materials are important to landfill volume design, landfill stability analysis, leachate controlling system allocation and settlement evaluation. For Chinese landfill improvement, some tests were carried out in laboratory or in situ to study the waste properties: composition, unit weight, moisture content, porosity, shearing strength, etc. The discussion of test results and comparison with some foreign values indicate that both landfill construction and solid waste management needs ameliorating in China.
A Comprehensive Assessment of Typical Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Technologies in China

Abstract:The Chinese municipal solid waste treatment method is changing from sanitary landfill to waste incineration.Based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP),a comprehensive assessment of the four typical incineration technologies applied in municipal solid waste treatment in China was conducted according to their reliability,economics and applicability.The study shows that domestically-supplied fluidized bed incineration technology would be applicable for waste incineration in most big cities in China,while the layered incineration technology is proper for large and more modernized cities with better waste magement systems and large-scale or centralized municipal solid waste treatment.Rotary kiln incineration and incineration pyrolysis technology could be used in small cities or industrial park areas whose solid waste has more complex composition with heterogeneous size,but dioxin emission control should be enhanced if such technologies are applied.
