Abstract:We propose a practically accessible non-mean-field ground state of Bose-Einstein condensation, which occurs in an interspecies two-particle entangled state, and is thus described by an entangled order parameter. A suitably defined entanglement entropy is used as the characterization of the non-mean-field nature, and is found to persist in a wide parameter regime. The interspecies entanglement leads to novel interference terms in the dynamical equations governing the single-particle orbital wave function. Experimental feasibility and several methods of probe are discussed. We urge the study of multichannel scattering between different species of atoms.

Abstract:We consider a mixture of two distinct species of atoms of pseudospin 1/2 with both intraspecies and interspecies spin-exchange interactions and find all the ground states in a general case of the parameters in the effective Hamiltonian. In general, corresponding to the two-species and two-pseudospin states, there are four orbital wave functions into which the atoms condense. We find that in certain parameter regimes, the ground state is the so-called polarized entangled Bose-Einstein condensation; that is, in addition to condensation of interspecies singlet pairs, there are unpaired atoms with spins polarized in the same direction. The interspecies entanglement and polarization significantly affect the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations governing the four orbital wave functions into which the atoms condense, as an interesting interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Abstract:The simple system of two atoms couple to single mode optical cavity with the phase decoherence is studied for investigating the entanglement and Bell violation between atoms and cavity or between two atoms. We show that in the resonance case (i) atom-field entanglement rapidly decays with phase decoherence and disappears in the stationary state, (ii) atom-atom entanglement is more robust against phase decoherence and survives in the stationary state. In the nonresonance case, the pairwise atom-atom and atom-field entanglement is sensitive to the detuning parameter and is not completely destroyed during evolution. On the other hand, violation of Bell-CHSH inequality is very fragile against the phase decoherence and finally disappears in the stationary state. The phenomenon that the more Bell violation, the less entanglement, or vice versa in such a realistic physical system, is revealed. This phenomenon maybe is the consequence of the choice of concurrence as the entanglement measure and the observables to build the Bell-CHSH inequality. The genuine three-partite entanglement is also analyzed by making use of the state preparation fidelity. It is shown that the genuine three-partite entanglement can appear in the evolution of the system even in the presence of the phase decoherence.

Abstract:We examine the practical feasibility of the experimental realization of the so-called entangled Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), occurring in an entangled state of two atoms of different species. We demonstrate that if the energy gap remains vanishing, the entangled BEC persists as the ground state of the concerned model in a wide parameter regime. We establish the experimental accessibility of the isotropic point of the effective parameters, in which the entangled BEC is the exact ground state, as well as the consistency with the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The transition temperature is estimated. Possible experimental implementations are discussed in detail.

Abstract:We investigate the two-dimensional weakly interacting rotating Bose-Einstein condensate by the tools of quantum information theory. The critical exponents of the ground-state fidelity susceptibility and the correlation length of the system are obtained for the sudden change of the ground state when the first vortex is formed. This sudden change can also be indicated by the ground state entanglement. We also find the single-particle entanglement can be an indicator of the angular momentums for some real ground states. The single-particle entanglement of fractional quantum Hall states such as Laughlin state and Pfaffian state is also studied.

Abstract:We study the ground state and classify its phase diagram for a mixture of two spin-1 condensates in the absence of external magnetic (B-) field according to atomic parameters for intra- and inter-species spin exchange coupling and singlet pairing interaction. Ignoring the inter-species singlet pairing interaction, the ground state phases are found analytically. Numerical approach of simulated annealing is adopted when the singlet pairing interaction is present. Our results on the phase diagram and the boundaries between phases allow for easy identifications of quantum phase transitions, that can be induced through the tuning of optical traps and atom numbers. They provide the first insight and guidance for several ongoing experiments on mixtures of spinor condensates.

Abstract:We revisit in detail the non-mean-field ground-state phase diagram for a binary mixture of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates including quantum fluctuations. The noncommuting terms in the spin-dependent Hamiltonian under the single-spatial-mode approximation make it difficult to obtain exact eigenstates. Utilizing spin-z-component conservation and total spin angular momentum conservation, we numerically derive information on the building blocks and evaluate the von Neumann entropy to quantify the ground states. The mean-field phase boundaries are found to remain largely intact, yet the ground states show fragmented and entangled behaviors within large parameter spaces of interspecies spin-exchange and singlet-pairing interactions.

Abstract:A mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 Bose gases exhibits interesting interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Expectation values of various quantities of the collective spins of the two species play crucial roles in the Gross-Pitaevskii-like equations governing the four orbital wave functions in which Bose-Einstein condensation occurs. Consequently, the elementary excitations of these orbital wave functions reflect properties of the collective spins. When the coupling between the two collective spins is isotropic, the energy gap of the gapped orbital excitation peaks. There is a quantum phase transition in the ground state of the effective Hamiltonian of the two collective spins, which have previously been found to be maximally entangled.

Abstract:We propose a protocol to create maximally entangled pairs, triplets, quartiles, and other clusters of Bose-condensed atoms starting from a condensate in the Mott insulator state. The essential element is to drive single atom Raman transitions using laser pulses. Our scheme is simple, efficient, and can be readily applied to the recent experimental system as reported by M. Greiner 413, 44 (2002)].

Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate and detect various kinds of quantum entanglement in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that substantial many-particle entanglement can be generated directly in the spin-1 condensate by free dynamical evolution with a properly prepared initial state. The scheme also provides a simple method to generate three-mode entanglement in the second-quantization picture and to detect the continuous variable type of entanglement between two effective modes in the spin-1 condensate.

Abstract:Spin-orbit coupling related new physics and quantum magnetism are two branches of great interest both in condensed matter physics and in cold atomic physics. With the introduction of a Rashba-like SOC into a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in a two-dimensional bipartite optical square lattice, we find that the ground state of the BEC always favors a coherent condensate than a fragmented condensate and always exhibits very large degeneracy, and most importantly, an antiferromagnetic order of quantum nature emerges when parameters satisfy certain condition. This provides an ideal platform to study the interplay of antiferromagnetic phase and superfluid phase.

Abstract:We show that stimulated scattering of an isolated system of N Bose particles with initially broad energy distribution can yield condensation of particles into excited collective state in which most of the bosons occupy one or several modes. During condensation, the total particle number and energy are conserved, while the entropy of the system grows. Onset of condensation occurs at a critical particle occupation number when spectrum narrowing due to stimulated processes overcomes spectrum broadening due to diffusion. This differs from Bose–Einstein condensation in which particles undergo condensation into the equilibrium state due to thermalization processes.

Abstract:We study the coherent cooperative phenomena of the system composed of two interacting atomic ensembles in the thermodynamic limit. Remarkably, the system exhibits the Dicke-like quantum phase transition and entanglement behavior although the governing Hamiltonian is fundamentally different from the spin-boson Dicke Hamiltonian, offering the opportunity for investigating collective matter-light dynamics with pure matter waves. The model can be realized with two Bose-Einstein condensates or atomic ensembles trapped in two optical cavities coupled to each other. The interaction between the two separate samples is induced by virtual photon exchange.

Abstract:We investigate the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations with the orbital degree of freedom in the three-dimensional cubic optical lattice, which gives rise to various exotic features absent in conventional scalar and spinor Bose-Einstein condensations. Orbital angular momentum moments are formed on lattice sites breaking time-reversal symmetry spontaneously. Furthermore, they exhibit orbital frustrations and develop a chiral ordering selected by the "order-from-disorder" mechanism.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium approach to the dynamics and statistics of the condensate of an ideal N-atom Bose gas cooling via interaction with a thermal reservoir using the canonical ensemble is developed. We derive simple analytical expressions for the canonical partition function and equilibrium distribution of the number of atoms in the ground state of a trap under different approximations, and compare them with exact numerical results. The N-particle constraint associated with the canonical ensemble is usually a burden. In the words of Kittel, "in the investigation of the Bose-Einstein... laws it is very inconvenient to impose the restriction that the number of particles in the subsystem shall be held constant." But in the present approach, based on the analogy between a second-order phase transition and laser threshold behavior, the N-particle constraint makes the problem easier. We emphasize that the present work provides another example of a case in which equilibrium (detailed balance) solutions to nonequilibrium equations of motion provide a useful supplementary approach to conventional statistical mechanics. We also discuss some dynamical and mesoscopic aspects of Bose-Einstein condensation. The conclusion is that the present analytical (but approximate) results, based on a nonequilibrium approach, are in excellent agreement with exact (but numerical) results. The present analysis has much in common with the quantum theory of the laser.

Abstract:The piling up of a macroscopic fraction of noninteracting bosons in the lowest energy state of a system at very low temperatures is known as Bose-Einstein condensation. It took nearly 70 years to observe the condensate after their theoretical prediction. A brief history of the relevant developments, essentials of the basic theory, physics of the steps involved in producing the condensate in a gas of alkali atoms together with the pertinent theory, and some important features of the research work carried out in the last about 25 years have been dealt with. An effort has been made to present the material in a manner that it can be easily followed by undergraduate students as well as non-specialists and may even be used for classroom teaching.

Abstract:We prove two equilibrium properties of a system of interacting atoms in three or higher dimensional continuous space. (i) If the particles interact via pair potentials of a nonnegative Fourier transform, their self-organization into infinite permutation cycles is simultaneous with off-diagonal long-range order. If the cycle lengths tend to infinity not slower than the square of the linear extension of the system, there is also Bose-Einstein condensation. (ii) If the pair potential is also nonnegative, cycles composed of a nonzero fraction of the total number of particles do appear if the density exceeds a temperature-dependent threshold value. The two together constitute the proof that in such a system Bose-Einstein condensation takes place at high enough densities.

Abstract:A nonlinear Schrodinger equation is derived for the dynamics of a beam of ultracold fermionic atoms traversing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate phonon modes are shown to provide a nonlinear medium for the fermionic atoms. A two-fermion bound state is predicted to arise, and the signature of the bound state in a nonlinear atom optics experiment is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate spin dynamics of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with weak Josephson coupling. Analytical expressions of atom-number squeezing and bipartite entanglement are presented for atom-atom repulsive interactions. For attractive interactions, there is no number squeezing; however, the squeezing parameter is still useful to recognize the appearance of Schrödinger's cat state.
