Abstract:The grassland of Yunnan-Guizhou-Sichuan Province serves as an important part of grassland in China,which plays an important role in the construction of ecological civilization and global climatechange.It is of great significance to analyze the change of net primary productivity (NPP) of grassland.This study calculated the NPP of grassland using the improved CASA model,and analyzed spatio-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of grassland ecosystem productivity in Yunnan-Guizhou-Sichuan from 1996 to 2015 based on the remote-sensing image data of AVHRR and MODIS,and the meteorological data of the surrounding areas.The results showed that:(1) The NDVI values of grassland in Yunnan,Guizhou and Sichuan Province obviously showed a regular pattern during the past 20 years,and the annual average value of NDVImax showed an increasing trend in 97.18％ of the grassland area.(2) The NPP of Yunnan-Guizhou-Sichuan grassland showed a spatial pattern of ‘ low value in the northwest,high value in the southwest and medium value in the east'.The annual average NPP was 420.85 gC · m-2 in the past 20 years.(3) The annual average NPP value of Yunnan-Guizhou-Sichuan area had a certain fluctuation,and it increased at the rate of 7.232 2 gC · m-2 · a-1 in the past 20 years.The NPP was the highest in summer with an average value of 160.25 gC · m-2.It showed an average NPP value of 109.10 gC · m-2 in spring and 106.10 gC ·m-2 in autumn.The average value in winter was 54.03 gC · m-2,which is the lowest.
INTEGRATION OF GROUND SAMPLING WITH SATELLITE IMAGING THROUGH GIS DATABASE TO MONITOR RANGELAND PRODUCTIVITY FOR GRAZING IN NORTH CHINA

Abstract:Due to population pressure and over-grazing, ecological degradation of the rangeland in north China becomes more and more serious in past decades. The degradation has caused many concerns from both domestic China and nearby countries such as Japan and Korea. Several big sandstorms invading north China in recent years have been commonly viewed as the direct results of rangeland desertification and environmental deterioration in the region. To balance pasture grazing activities and ecosystem sustainability, monitoring grass productivity of the rangelands is very necessary. In the study, we use gross primary production (GPP) images generated from MODIS data to integrate with ground truth measurements for rangeland productivity monitoring in north China. Totally we obtain 991 ground samples taken in different periods in recent years. The samples are divided into two datasets: 528 for model development and 433 for model validation. The GPP images obtained from NASA’s global GPP program are used to compute annual GPP image. Image GPP datasets matching the ground samples are then retrieved from the annual GPP image using ArcInfo program for model development. Three models are proposed for estimation of actual grass production: L1, L2 and L3. Coefficients of the models indicate that ½~¾ of GPP can be converted into actual grass production if the rangeland ecosystem is under its natural development without disturbance by grazing. A strategic model is developed using the three models. The model uses L1 when GPP 500 g/m 2 . Validation with another independent dataset indicates that the combined model has an estimation error of ~46 g/m2 and a relative error of 28% for those samplings with light to middle level of grazing. Application to the rangeland and comparison with current grazing intensity reveals that overgrazing was a common phenomenon in the region.
The comparisons of carbon sink/source of Chinese grassland ecosystem using different approaches

Abstract:Grassland ecosystem, one of the widely distributed vegetation type, is of great significance in estimation of global carbon cycle. The grassland net primary productivity (NPP) plays an important role in global change and carbon balance; it is always used as an index of C cycle in terrestrial ecosystems at landscape and regional scales. This paper compared grassland net primary productivity (NPP) estimation methods, including filed observation and models (mainly climate productivity model, process model and light energy use efficiency model). As every method has its limited, it was convenient and prompt to estimate NPP using remote sensing data and could achieve fast monitoring of all kinds of vegetation. Meanwhile, these researches, such as influence on the terrestrial ecosystem carbon source/sink caused by climate change and atmospheric CO2 increase and effects on carbon cycle caused by terrestrial ecosystems type conversion, are not studied enough; either scene simulation based on models or contrast studies, there is even larger gap in this research in China. Therefore, we studied the NPP of the main grassland in China( Sinkiang, Inner Mongolia, grassplot in Southern China) using the Remote Sensing(RS), Geography Information System(GIS), modified Cellular Automata(CA) and integrated model with high precision testified by MODIS data and meteorological data, which is much more suitable for grassland in China, and extend to the Europe and North America, then grassland ecosystem carbon source/sink estimation using remote sensing data is proposed. The results will provide the scientific basis for the government to account grassland carbon balance and carbon storage in the future. Under the condition of increasing measuring precision and region density, it is superior to use remote sensing in grassland NPP measurement, which provides baseline for the terrestrial carbon cycle mechanism and global carbon balance research.

Abstract:Grassland ecosystems play important roles in the global carbon cycle. The net primary productivity (NPP) of grassland ecosystems has become the hot spot of terrestrial ecosystems. To simulate the NPP in the grasslands of southern China, we built a land portfolio assessment (LPA) model. The LPA model was named according to the framework and principle of this model. From the framework of the model aspect, it was mainly driven by two parameters: leaf area index (LAI) and photosynthesis accumulation (PA). LAI is an extremely important structural characteristic of grassland and directly related to the exchange of energy, CO2 and mass at a variety of scales. PA is represented by the amount of net photosynthetic production based on fixed-point observation. From the principle of the model aspect, it is represented by the inherent implication of NPP and a part of land portfolio assessment. The results showed that the NPP values in the study area had a decreasing trend from east to west and south to north and that the mean NPP was 320 g C m−2 year−1 from 2001 to 2010. Correlations analysis showed that the correlation coefficient (r) between NPP and highest monthly mean temperature of a year was the maximum (0.6422), and the r value between NPP and annual precipitation was the minimum (0.3821). Using trial and error, the LPA model accurately simulated the NPP dynamics of southern China’s grassland ecosystem, and the results were biologically realistic.

Abstract:The temperate grasslands in China play a vital part in regulating regional carbon cycle and climate change. Net primary productivity (NPP) is a crucial index that reflects ecological function of plants and the carbon sequestration capacity of grassland ecosystem. Climate change can affect NPP by changing vegetation growth, but the effects of climate change on the NPP of China's temperate grasslands remain unclear. Based on MODIS data and monthly climate data during 2000–2020, this study explored the spatiotemporal changes in grassland NPP and its response to climate change in temperate grasslands of China. We found that the annual NPP over the entire China's temperate grasslands increased significantly by 4.0 gC/m 2 /year from 2000 to 2020. The annual NPP showed increasing trends for all the different grassland vegetation types, with the smallest increase for temperate desert steppe (2.2 gC/m 2 /year) and the largest increase for temperate meadow (5.4 gC/m 2 /year). The correlation results showed that increased annual precipitation had a positive relationship with the NPP of temperate grasslands. Increased summer and autumn precipitation could increase grassland NPP, particularly for the temperate meadow. With regard to the effects of temperatures, increased temperature, particularly the summer maximum temperature, could decrease annual NPP. However, increased spring minimum temperature could increase the NPP of temperate desert steppe. In addition, this study found, for the first time, an asymmetric relationship between summer nighttime and daytime warming and the NPP of temperate meadow. Specifically, nighttime warming can increase NPP, while daytime warming can reduce NPP in temperate meadow. Our results highlight the importance of including seasonal climate conditions in assessing the vegetation productivity for different grassland types of temperate grasslands and predicting the influences of future climate change on temperate grassland ecosystems.

Evaluation of Net Primary Productivity and Its Spatial and Temporal Patterns in Southern China’s Grasslands

Abstract:The net primary productivity (NPP) of grassland ecosystems is an important indicator of the capacity for carbon (C) absorption. The Global Production Efficiency Model was adopted to simulate NPP in southern China’s grasslands and to analyse the temporal and spatial dynamics from 1981 to 2000. There was a high correlation between measured and simulated values (R2 = 0.84). Based on the data from 1981 to 2000, the mean annual NPP was 1082 g C m–2 year–1, and the highest value (1798 g C m–2 year–1) was in Hainan province, and the lowest value (500 g C m–2 year–1) was in south-western Tibet. The highest mean NPP values were in the permanent wetlands (1193 g C m–2 year–1) and savannas (1137 g C m–2 year–1); woody savannas had an intermediate value (1087 g C m–2 year–1), and the lowest NPP occurred in typical grasslands and open shrubs, the mean values were 709 and 689 g C m–2 year–1, respectively. Temporally, the total NPP in southern China’s grasslands slightly increased in the 20-year period, especially from 1981 to 1990. The mean annual total of NPP in the 20 years was 0.758 Pg C. Inter-annual variation in total NPP was driven mainly by mean annual temperature rather than mean annual precipitation. The results suggest that grassland ecosystems in southern China have a large C sink.

Abstract:To address severe grassland degradation, the Chinese government implemented national restoration programmes, which in turn drove a research focus towards assessment of the environmental effectiveness of such initiatives. In this study, net primary productivity (NPP) was used as an indicator for assessing the impacts of land use and cover change (LUCC), improved land-use management and climate change on the grassland ecosystem of the Shiyanghe River Basin. NPP was calculated on the basis of the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach model, which is driven by a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index and meteorological data. The LUCC data for 2001 and 2009 were derived from MODIS land-cover data. During the study period, the net increase in grassland development was 51055km(2), with 804% of the newly developed grasslands attributed to desert-to-grassland conversion. The total NPP of grasslands in 2009 increased by 65962Gg C compared with that in 2001. The contributions of human activity and climate change to total NPP increase were 133 and -33% respectively. Land conversion and improved management measures directly increased grassland NPP. These factors are dominant positive driving forces, whereas warm and dry climates impose adverse effects on grassland restoration in the study site.
The Variation of Landscape and NPP of Main Pastoral Grasslands in China

Abstract:To explore the grassland ecosystem productivity and landscape ecological patterns of main pastoral grasslands in China, it provides a theoretical basis for the efficient implementation of ecological engineering and rational management of grassland resources in the region. This study analyzed the changes in grassland area, landscape index (LSI), and net primary productivity (NPP) in seven major pastoral areas in China in 1985, 1995, 2005, and 2015. Results showed that (1) the sizes of the grassland study area in 1985, 1995, 2005, and 2015 were 248.34, 243.93, 245.80, and 244.660 km2(,) respectively. (2) The dominance of grassland in the landscape pattern increased from 2005 to 2015 as compared with that in 1985-1995 and 1995-2005. The degrees of spatial heterogeneity were reduced. (3) The grassland NPP showed spatial and temporal differences. The average NPP of grassland increased by 21.30, 16.47, and 36.17% during 1985-1995, 2005-2015, and 1985-2015, respectively. From 1995 to 2005, the average NPP decreased by 5.05 gC/m(2), which is equivalent to -3.61% of the average NPP in 1995. The total amount of grassland NPP in the study area was the greatest in 2015, showing increments of 36.37% and 16.61% compared with those in 1985 and 2005, respectively.
Field‐based Estimation of Net Primary Productivity and Its Above‐ and Belowground Partitioning in Global Grasslands

Abstract:Net primary productivity (NPP) in global grasslands is a critical component of terrestrial carbon cycling and the primary source of food for herbivores. However, the size and spatial distribution of NPP across global grasslands remain unclear, especially for belowground NPP (BNPP), which limits our understanding of above- and belowground carbon cycling and the assessments of herbivore food security. Here, we compiled a comprehensive grassland NPP database with 1,467 field measurements to estimate the spatial distributions of aboveground NPP (ANPP), BNPP, total NPP (TNPP), and the fraction of BNPP (f(BNPP)) using the random forest (RF) model. The global mean grassland ANPP, BNPP, TNPP, and f(BNPP) were 433 +/- 31 g m(-2) yr(-1), 593 +/- 47 g m(-2) yr(-1), 979 +/- 78 g m(-2) yr(-1), and 0.54 +/- 0.02, respectively. The total ANPP, BNPP, and TNPP over global grasslands were 6.84 +/- 0.49, 9.36 +/- 0.74, and 15.46 +/- 1.23 Pg C yr(-1), respectively. ANPP, BNPP, and TNPP exhibited decreasing trends from low latitudes toward the poles. The spatial pattern of f(BNPP) was almost opposite to that of ANPP. Climate was a major determinant in shaping the spatial distribution of ANPP and TNPP, while soil and vegetation had significant impacts on that of BNPP and f(BNPP). Our findings suggest that field data-driven estimation of NPP using the RF model could be a useful approach for obtaining spatially explicit NPP of grasslands, particularly BNPP products, and that more attention should be paid on belowground and non-climatic factors to better assess the carbon cycle in global grasslands.
Grassland gross carbon dioxide uptake based on an improved model tree ensemble approach considering human interventions: global estimation and covariation with climate

Abstract:Grassland ecosystems act as a crucial role in the global carbon cycle and provide vital ecosystem services for many species. However, these low-productivity and water-limited ecosystems are sensitive and vulnerable to climate perturbations and human intervention, the latter of which is often not considered due to lack of spatial information regarding the grassland management. Here by the application of a model tree ensemble (MTE-GRASS) trained on local eddy covariance data and using as predictors gridded climate and management intensity field (grazing and cutting), we first provide an estimate of global grassland gross primary production (GPP). GPP from our study compares well (modeling efficiency NSE = 0.85 spatial; NSE between 0.69 and 0.94 interannual) with that from flux measurement. Global grassland GPP was on average 11 ± 0.31 Pg C yr-1 and exhibited significantly increasing trend at both annual and seasonal scales, with an annual increase of 0.023 Pg C (0.2%) from 1982 to 2011. Meanwhile, we found that at both annual and seasonal scale, the trend (except for northern summer) and interannual variability of the GPP are primarily driven by arid/semiarid ecosystems, the latter of which is due to the larger variation in precipitation. Grasslands in arid/semiarid regions have a stronger (33 g C m-2 yr-1 /100 mm) and faster (0- to 1-month time lag) response to precipitation than those in other regions. Although globally spatial gradients (71%) and interannual changes (51%) in GPP were mainly driven by precipitation, where most regions with arid/semiarid climate zone, temperature and radiation together shared half of GPP variability, which is mainly distributed in the high-latitude or cold regions. Our findings and the results of other studies suggest the overwhelming importance of arid/semiarid regions as a control on grassland ecosystems carbon cycle. Similarly, under the projected future climate change, grassland ecosystems in these regions will be potentially greatly influenced.
Indirect Effects of Water Availability in Driving and Predicting Productivity in the Gobi Desert

Abstract:Climate is the fundamental determinant of plant metabolism and net primary productivity (NPP). However, whether climate drives NPP directly or indirectly is not well understand. The Gobi desert across a precipitation gradient in the arid zone provides an ideal naturally-controlled platform for studying the precipitation-productivity relationships. We conducted 3-year experiments in four Gobi desert shrublands across an aridity gradient in Gansu Province of China to test the relationship between water availability and shrub productivity as well as the relative importance of the possible factors driving productivity (using piecewise structural equation modeling) and to explore the appropriate variables for predicting productivity (using three spatial models). The results showed that water availability indirectly affected the NPP via stand biomass, while stand biomass had a significant direct effect on NPP regardless of whether the leaf water content and stand height were considered. The model based on stand size (71.6%) and the model that contained both stand size and water availability (72.3%) explained more of the variation in the water-NPP relationships than the model based on water availability (37.3%). Our findings suggest that even in extremely water-limited areas, the effects of water availability on plant growth and the kinetics of plant metabolism could be indirect via plant size, demonstrating the importance of plant size as an indicator of shrub productivity. This study explains the mechanisms underlying the NPP driving pattern and proposes a practical NPP model for arid ecosystems.
[Estimation of Net Primary Productivity in Middle Reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River and Its Two Tributaries].

Abstract:Based on the MODIS data and field measurement, the net primary production (NPP) in 2000 and 2006 in the middle reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River and its two tributaries in Tibet were estimated by using a mathematic model. The results showed that in study area, the NPP decreased gradually from valley to ridge, which was accorded with the gradients of precipitation and temperature. The annul NPP per unit area was averagely 86.8 g C m(-2) a(-1), and was 2.15 g C m(-2) a(-1) higher in 2006 than in 2000. Farmland ecosystem had the highest annual NPP per unit area (243.1 g C m(-2) a(-1)), while desert ecosystem had the lowest one (36.5 g C m(-2) a(-1)). The average total NPP in the two years was 512.8 x 10(10) g C a(-1), with the value in 2006 being 12.7 x 10(10) g C a(-1) higher than that in 2000. Meadow ecosystem had the highest annual total NPP (194.4 x 10(10) g C a(-1)), while desert ecosystem had the lowest one (30.3 x 10(10) g C a(-1)). In 2000-2006, the NPP value in the areas with strong human disturbance (0-4 km away from road) had a decreasing trend, while that in the areas difficult for human to reach was in adverse.
The spatial distribution patterns of grassland NPP in south China based on climate productivity models

Abstract:According to the climate data of nearly 31years(1980-2010),the grassland net primary productivity(NPP)in south China was estimated based on 5kinds of climate productivity models.The results showed that the spatial distribution patterns of southern grassland NPP simulated by 5kinds models were consistent.The regions of minimal NPP were distributed in the northwest of Sichuan,then the value of NPP gradually increased from the northwest to the southeast in south China,and the regions of maximal NPP were distributed in the eastern and southern coastal areas.But there were certain differences between the model estimation results.The sequences of maximal NPP estimated by the models from maximum to minimum were successively Miami model,Thornthwaite Memorial model,Zhou Guangsheng model,Chikugo model and Zhu Zhihui model.The sequences of minimal NPP estimated by the models from maximum to minimum were successively Chikugo model,Zhu Zhihui model,Thornthwaite Memorial model,Miami model and Zhou Guangsheng model.The sequences of average NPP estimated by the models from maximum to minimum were successively Miami model,Thornthwaite Memorial model,Chikugo model,Zhu Zhihui model and Zhou Guangsheng model.The maximum,minimum and average value of the estimation results of 5kinds of models was 1 676.26,664.71and 1 201.64g·m-2, respectively,and they were all in the middle level,and close to the Chikugo model estimation results.The model validation showed that the values of relative error,root mean square error(RMSE)and relative root mean square error(RRMSE)of Zhou Guangsheng model were the smallest,and R2 was bigger than other 3 models.The above results showed that it was appropriate to estimate the grassland NPP in south China based on Zhou Guangsheng model.
Divergent dynamics between grassland greenness and gross primary productivity across China

Abstract:Grassland, the most widespread vegetation type in China, has been greening recently.However, the extent to which the greenness has been translated into productivity and the underlying mechanism of the decoupled grassland greenness and productivity remains unclear. In this study, we detected the trend of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and gross primary productivity (GPP) of grassland in China from 2000 to 2019 and analyzed the driving mechanism of the inconsistency between them. It was found that the relative increase rate of productivity (27.27%, p < 0.05) was much greater than that of greenness (14.54%, p < 0.05) across grasslands in China from 2000 to 2019, especially in temperate regions. The temperature and precipitation were the main factors influencing the grassland growth change, and the impact of temperature and shortwave radiation on productivity was greater than on greenness. However, the increase of grassland greenness was not fully translated into productivity in subtropical and tropical grass as well as shrub. This study revealed the dominance of climatic factors in the translation process from ecosystem structure to function, which highlighted the challenge in enhancing carbon uptake capacity of terrestrial ecosystem facing accelerated climate change.

Contrasting Performance of the Remotely-Derived GPP Products over Different Climate Zones across China.

Abstract:Precise quantification of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) has been recognized as one of the most important components in understanding the carbon balance between the biosphere and the atmosphere. In recent years, although many large-scale GPP estimates from satellite data and ecosystem models have been generated, few attempts have been made to compare the different GPP products at national scales, particularly for various climate zones. In this study, two of the most widely-used GPP datasets were systematically compared over the eight climate zones across China's terrestrial ecosystems from 2001 to 2015, which included the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) GPP and the breathing Earth system simulator (BESS) GPP products. Additionally, the coarse (0.05(o)) GPP estimates from the vegetation photosynthesis model (VPM) at the same time scale were used for auxiliary analysis with the two products. Both MODIS and BESS products exhibited a decreasing trend from the southeast region to the northwest inland. The largest GPP was found in the tropical humid region with 5.49 g C m(-2) d(-1) and 5.07 g C m(-2) d(-1) for MODIS and BESS, respectively, while the lowest GPP was distributed in the warm temperate arid region, midtemperate semiarid region and plateau zone. Meanwhile, the work confirmed that all these GPP products showed apparent seasonality with the peaks in the summertime. However, large differences were found in the interannual variations across the three GPP products over different climate regions. Generally, the BESS GPP agreed better than the MODIS GPP when compared to the seasonal and interannual variations of VPM GPP. Furthermore, the spatial correlation analysis between terrestrial GPP and the climatic factors, including temperature and precipitation, indicated that natural rainfall dominated the variability in GPP of Northern China, such as the midtemperate semiarid region, while temperature was a key controlling factor in the Southern China and the Tibet Plateau area.
Performance of the Remotely-Derived Products in Monitoring Gross Primary Production across Arid and Semi-Arid Ecosystems in Northwest China

Abstract:As an important component to quantify the carbon budget, accurate evaluation of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) is crucial for large-scale applications, especially in dryland ecosystems. Based on the in situ data from six flux sites in northwestern China from 2014 to 2016, this study compares seasonal and interannual dynamics of carbon fluxes between these arid and semi-arid ecosystems and the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the reliability of multiple remotely-derived GPP products in representative drylands was examined, including the Breathing Earth System Simulator (BESS), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and data derived from the OCO-2 solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (GOSIF). The results indicated that the carbon fluxes had clear seasonal patterns, with all ecosystems functioning as carbon sinks. The maize cropland had the highest GPP with 1183 g C m−2 y−1. Although the net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) in the Tamarix spp. ecosystem was the smallest among these flux sites, it reached 208 g C m−2 y−1. Furthermore, distinct advantages of GOSIF GPP (with R2 = 0.85–0.98, and RMSE = 0.87–2.66 g C m−2 d−1) were found with good performance. However, large underestimations in three GPP products existed during the growing seasons, except in grassland ecosystems. The main reasons can be ascribed to the uncertainties in the key model parameters, including the underestimated light use efficiency of the MODIS GPP, the same coarse land cover product for the BESS and MODIS GPP, the coarse gridded meteorological data, and distribution of C3 and C4 plants. Therefore, it still requires more work to accurately quantify the GPP across these dryland ecosystems.

Abstract:Grassland ecosystems are a significant part of the global ecosystem and support the livelihoods of millions of people. The Inner Mongolia grassland is the largest temperate grassland in the world, and an important ecological barrier for China, but due to human activities and climate change it has been faced with an ecological crisis in recent years. In this study, a modified Carnegie-Ames-Stanford approach (CASA) model based on the Google Earth Engine platform was used to determine the net primary production (NPP) in the Inner Mongolia grassland from 2000 to 2020. The results show that the average annual NPP of the Inner Mongolia grassland is 278.63 g C/m2, and 83.22% of the total area has shown an increasing trend during the study period. We also analyzed the impact of land-use/cover change (LUCC) and climatic factors on NPP. We found that: (1) the total area of grassland increased from 2000 to 2010 and then decreased from 2010 to 2020. During the whole study period, although the grassland area increased slightly by 4728.69 km2 because of LUCC, the overall effect of LUCC on grassland NPP was negative, with a loss of 17.63 Tg C compared to an increase of 16.38 Tg C. (2) The main meteorological factor affecting the NPP of the Inner Mongolia grassland is precipitation, followed by sunshine duration and temperature. About 97.06% of the grassland shows a positive correlation between NPP and precipitation. (3) The results for NPP and its changing trends are not completely consistent in the long- and short-term study periods. Considering the instability of grassland growth, it is necessary to take the periodic variation of precipitation into account when studying NPP. These results could provide basic information for policy formulation and scientific research into the ecological environment management of grassland areas in the future.

Abstract:To estimate the leaf area index( LAI) in large areas,this paper analyzes the relationships between normalized difference vegetation index( NDVI) and the grassland LAI based on MODIS data in the southern grassy mountains and slopes of China.By using nonlinear fitting equation we constructed the basic estimation model of grassland LAI with NDVI as the independent variable and introduced precipitation and temperature as regulatory factors.The model was validated with observed data in different years and the results showed that there was a good correlation between the simulated and observed LAI value with a statistically significant level of R2.RMSE was 0.302 and RRMSE was 0.154.It was also found that the spatial distribution of grassland LAI in south China showed a remarkable zonal characterization,and temporal distribution showed a single peak curve.These results provided a theoretical basis for the effective management of southern grassland resources and the carbon sink estimation of the nationwide grasslands.

Abstract:We developed a sophisticated method to depict the spatial and seasonal characterization of net primary productivity (NPP) and climate variables. The role of climate variability in the seasonal variation of NPP exerts delayed and continuous effects. This study expands on this by mapping the seasonal characterization of NPP and climate variables from space using geographic information system (GIS) technology at the pixel level. Our approach was developed in southeastern China using moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The results showed that air temperature, precipitation and sunshine percentage contributed significantly to seasonal variation of NPP. In the northern portion of the study area, a significant positive 32-d lagged correlation was observed between seasonal variation of NPP and climate (P<0.01), and the influences of changing climate on NPP lasted for 48 d or 64 d. In central southeastern China, NPP showed 16-d, 48-d, and 96-d lagged correlation with air temperature, precipitation, and sunshine percentage, respectively (P<0.01); the influences of air temperature and precipitation on NPP lasted for 48 d or 64 d, while sunshine influence on NPP only persisted for 16 d. Due to complex topography and vegetation distribution in the southern part of the study region, the spatial patterns of vegetation-climate relationship became complicated and diversiform, especially for precipitation influences on NPP. In the northern part of the study area, all vegetation NPP had an almost similar response to seasonal variation of air temperature except for broad crops. The impacts of seasonal variation of precipitation and sunshine on broad and cereal crop NPP were slightly different from other vegetation NPP.
Spatio-Temporal Variation and the Associated Factor Analysis of Net Primary Productivity in Grasslands in Inner Mongolia

Abstract:The grassland ecosystem in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) serves as a vital ecological barrier in northern China, and the vegetation productivity in the grasslands exhibits considerable temporal and spatial variations. However, few studies have examined the long-term variations in the NPP in the IMAR and quantified the effects of natural factors and human activities on the NPP. The study modeled the net primary productivity (NPP) of the IMAR's grasslands using the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach (CASA) model and employed linear regression, trend analysis, and spatial statistics to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns in vegetation productivity and explore the impact on the NPP of natural and socio-economic factors over the past two decades. The results reveal that the average NPP value from 2001 to 2021 was 293.80 gC∙m−2 a−1, characterized by spatial clustering of a relatively high NPP in the east, a low NPP in the west, and an annual increase of 3.26 gC∙m−2 over the years. The NPP values varied significantly across different vegetation cover types, with meadows having the highest NPP, followed by typical steppe and desert grasslands. The spatial distribution pattern and temporal changes in the grassland productivity are the result of both natural factors and human activities, including topographical properties and socio-economic indicators such as gross domestic product, night-time light, and population. The results for the NPP in the IMAR were based solely on the CASA model and, therefore, to achieve improved data reliability, exact measurements in real field conditions will be conducted in the future. The findings from the spatial clustering and temporal trajectories of the NPP and the impacts from the factors can provide useful guidance to planning grassland vegetation protection policies for the IMAR.
