Abstract:The solubility of Troeger's base (TB) in SC-CO2/CH3OH was measured at 308K ill the pressure range of 8 to 13 MPa, and methanol concentration ranges from 0 to 20 mol%. The solubility increases dramatically with methanol concentration. Comparison of solubility in supercritical CO2 with and without 10 mol% CH3OH ill the pressure of 8 MPa at 308K implies that both curves are sleep in the lower pressure range but become smooth as the pressure increases.

Abstract:The solubilities of titanocene dichloride in supercritical propane had been investigated under the pressure range from 10 to 35MPa using a flow phase equilibrium apparatus at temperatures of 383.15, 388.15, 393.15, 398.15, 403.15, and 408.15K, respectively. The measured solubilities exhibited a clear dependence on temperature and pressure and could be correlated with the Peng–Robinson equation of state in the fugacity coefficient expression with fairly good accuracy.

Abstract:The equilibrium solubilities of two dodecylpolyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene ether nonionic surfactants (A(EO)BmB(PO)(n)) in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured at temperatures ranging from (308 to 328) K and pressures from (13.6 to 32.0) MPa in a stainless steel variable-volume view cell. The experimental data were correlated using a semiempirical model. The calculated results show satisfactory agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:The triethylene glycol and tripropylene glycol derivatives terminated with the CO2-philic phosphoryl groups, named 2-(2-(2-((2-ethylhexoxy(methoxy)phosphoryl)oxy)-ethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl 2-ethylhexyl methyl phosphate (EG3EH) and 2-(2-(2-((2-ethylhexoxy(methoxy)phosphoryl)oxy)propoxy)-propoxy)propyl 2-ethylhexyl methyl phosphate (PG3EH), were synthesized and characterized. The solubilities of EG3EH and PG3EH in scCO(2) were determined by a static method at temperatures from (313 to 333) K and over a pressure range of (10 to 19) MPa. The values calculated by the Bartle semiempirical model exhibited good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:A flow method apparatus was built for determination of solid solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide. A sampling valve was used to obtain the sample, which was especially effective for the solids with less solubility. To test the system, the solubility of model solute naphthalene at 308K was determined. The experimental data are in agreement with literature values. The system works at temperature from 0 to 80°C and pressure from 0.1 to 40MPa.

Abstract:The solubilities of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether were measured at temperatures ranging from 313 to 363 K and pressures from 8.2 to 18.3 MPa in supercritical carbon dioxide.The solubility data were calculated and correlated using a semiempirical Bartle and Chrastil model,which showed satisfactory agreement with each other and the average absolute relative deviations were in the range of 8.88 %-16.72 % and 6.00 %-7.84 % respectively.According to the theory developed by Kumar and Johnston,solubility data were also used to estimate the partial molar volumes 2 for compounds at different temperatures in the supercritical phase using.

Abstract:The solubility of phenol in supercritical carbon dioxide was measured under the pressure ranging from 8.5 to 16.0 MPa and the temperature from 373.15 to 398.15 K.The experimental results showed that the solubility of phenol in supercritical CO2 increased with pressure,while the effect of temperature on the solubility of phenol was complicated.To be exact,the solubility increased with temperature when the pressure exceeded the retrograde pressure of 11.0 MPa,while the increasing temperature led to decrease of the phenol solubility when the pressure was below1 1.0 MPa.The experimental solubility data were correlated by using the Peng-Robinson equation of state with the van der Waals mixing rule,and the density-based model proposed by Chrastil,inwhich the values of the average absolute relative deviation were 9.25%and 6.33 %,respectively,indicating the correlation results were fairly good.

Abstract:Solubility of quinine in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) was experimentally measured in the pressure range of 8 to 24MPa, at three constant temperatures: 308.15K, 318.15K and 328.15K. Measurement was carried out in a semi-dynamic system. Experimental data were correlated by iso-fugacity model (based on cubic equations of state, CEOS), Modified Mendez–Santiago–Teja (MST) and Modified Bartle semi-empirical models. Two cubic equations of state: Peng–Robinson (PR) and Dashtizadeh–Pazuki–Ghotbi–Taghikhani (DPTG) were adopted for calculation of equilibrium parameters in CEOS modeling. Interaction coefficients (kij & lij) of van der Waals (vdW) mixing rules were considered as the correlation parameters in CEOS-based modeling and their contribution to the accuracy of model was investigated. Average Absolute Relative Deviation (AARD) between correlated and experimental data was calculated and compared as the index of validity and accuracy for different modeling systems. In this basis it was realized that the semi-empirical equations especially Modified MST can accurately support the theoretical studies on phase equilibrium behavior of quinine–SCCO2 media. Among the cubic equations of state DPGT within two-parametric vdW mixing rules provided the best data fitting and PR within one-parametric vdW mixing rules demonstrated the highest deviation respecting to the experimental data. Overall, in each individual modeling system the best fitting was observed on the data points attained at 318K, which could be perhaps due to the moderate thermodynamic state of supercritical phase.

Abstract:In-situ quantitative Raman spectroscopy combining with high pressure optical capillary cell was used to measure water solubility in CO2 at pressures from 10 to 50 MPa and temperatures from 313.15 to 473.15 K. To accurately calibrate Raman system for measuring the concentrations of dissolved water in supercritical CO2 at high pressure and elevated temperature, the unsaturated homogenized solution method that we used for measuring the CO2 concentration in aqueous solution previously was modified to obtain the quantitative relationship between composition (the mole fraction of H2O in the homogeneous phase, xH2O) and Raman peak area ratio (PAR). The Raman quantitative factor PAR/xH2O increases linearly with increasing temperature, deceases with increasing pressure, and is not affected by the mole fraction of H2O in the mixture. 45 solubility data points were obtained, and they are generally consistent with previous experimental studies. However, predictions of the thermodynamic models substantially deviate from the new measurements due to the previous lack of accurate experimental data in these P-T ranges. Parameters of the model were then refined, and the solubility data can now be accurately reproduced by the model.

Abstract:The solubility of glycyrrhizin in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) with cosolvent ethanol at the mole fraction of (0, 0.02, and 0.04) was measured, respectively, at pressures of (9 to 21) MPa and temperatures of (308, 318, and 328) K. The results revealed that the glycyrrhizin solubility depended on the pressure, temperature, and cosolvent mole fraction. The glycyrrhizin solubility in pure SCCO2 was well correlated with Chrastil, Bartle, and Mendez-Santiago and Teja models with the average absolute relative deviation (AARD) below 6.82 %. The glycyrrhizin solubility in SCCO2 with cosolvent was correlated by Chrastil modified by Gonzalez (Chrastil-G), and MST modified by Sauseau (MST-S) models with satisfactory AARD below 3.85 %. The results provide fundamental data in designing extraction of glycyrrhizin from the licorice or preparation of its particle using SCCO2 techniques.

Abstract:Isopleths and solution densities are reported, from ≈ 25 to 100 °C and pressures to ≈ 200 bar, for mixtures of CO2 with pyrazine, 2-methoxypyrazine, 2-acetylpyrazine, 2-methylpyrazine, and 2,3-dimethylpyrazine. These five solute + CO2 systems exhibit type-I phase behavior with similar mixture critical pressures up to 100 °C. The Peng−Robinson equation of state, with kij equal to zero, provides a semi-quantitative representation of the data for all of the pyrazines with the exception of the 2-acetylpyrazine + CO2 system, which required a kij of −0.100 to get a reasonable representation of the data. The data presented here further substantiates the observation that supercritical CO2 can be used to extract pyrazines from natural materials.
Extraction of low volatility liquid mixtures with supercritical carbon dioxide

Abstract:Extraction equilibrium of the equal-molar mixtures of benzyl alcohol-2-phenethyl alcohol and methyl benzoate-benzyl alcohol by supercritical carbon dioxide were determined in a semi-flow apparatus at two temperatures (308.2K and 318.2K) and pressures 8-20MPa. For the system CO2-benzyl alcohol-2-phenethyl alcohol, experimental results show that the solubilities of the two liquids are closely related to the solubility of carbon dioxide in the liquid phase. By means of the mixing rules with binary interaction parameters accounting for the molecular size differences, the Peng-Robinson equation of state can give reasonable correlation for the experimental phase equilibrium data for this asymmetric ternary system. For the system CO2-methyl benzoate-benzyl alcohol, the experimental results show that at higher pressures methyl benzoate concentration in the overhead fluid phase increases dramatically. This suggests that multi-phace co-existence states can occur in these conditions. The results show that, for liquid mixtures with relatively large disparity in molecular structure, there may exist certain temperature and pressure regions within which selectivity for more readily-soluble components increase dramatically.

Abstract:In this work, solubility parameters of the supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) system and the SC-CO2 adding cosolvent systems were calculated using molecular dynamics simulation. How temperature and pressure changes affected the solubility parameter were studied by molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, the mechanism of interaction between cosolvent and SC-CO2 was investigated. It was discovered that the SC-CO2 solubility parameter rose with rising pressure at constant temperature and fell with rising temperature at constant pressure. Additionally, it is obvious that increasing the solubility parameter of the SC-CO2 system as a whole can be achieved by adding a specific quantity of cosolvent. The solubility parameter of the SC-CO2-cosolvent system increased with increasing cosolvent content. The addition of cosolvent to improve the solubility parameter works by increasing the combined system's polar strength. The hydrogen bonding interaction energy has the greatest impact on the increase of solubility parameter.

Abstract:The density of the supercritical fluid seriously affects the solubility of a solute in the fluid.Using Peng-Robinson equation of state,the densities of supercritical CO2 at different operating conditions were calculated.The results of calculation were compared with the existing experimental data reported in the literature.The smallest absolute relative deviation is 0.13%,the largest is 9.44% and the mean is 3.60%.These indicated that the calculated density of supercritical CO2 by PR EOS is in a good agreement with experimental data.Under the pressure ranging from 8.0MPa to 35.0MPa and temperature from 305.15K to 398.15K,CO2 densities were calculated and formed the density map,which will facilitate the searching and interpolation of density.With the increase of pressure and the decrease of temperature,the density of supercritical CO2 increases,as well as the solubility of phenol in supercritical CO2 increases.

Abstract:The binary vapor–liquid equilibrium data of CO2 in diethylene glycol (monomethyl, monoethyl, monobutyl, dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl) ether were determined from 288.15 to 318.15 K at pressure up to 6MPa based on the constant-volume method. It was found by contrast that the ether group in solvents can promote the CO2 absorption, but the hydroxyl group will inhibit the CO2 absorption. Furthermore, the solubilities of CO2 showed an upward trend with the increasing molecular lengths of absorbents. The experimental data were also correlated with a modified Patel–Teja equation of state (PT EOS) combined with the traditional van der Waals one-fluid mixing rules and the results showed a satisfactory agreement between the model and the experimental data.

Abstract:The enhancement of the solubility parameter of supercritical carbon dioxide plays pivotal role in the application of extraction operation. The solubility parameter of supercritical CO2 solvent (SC-CO2) and supercritical CO2 with cosolvent (SC-CO2-cosolvent) system have been studied using the molecular dynamics simulations (MD). The calculated results reveal that the solubility parameters of pure SC-CO2 solvent and SC-CO2-cosolvent both reduce with the raising of temperature, enhance with the raising of pressure, and boost linearly with the raising of their density. The adding of the cosolvent (methanol, ethanol, acetone and cyclohexane) into the SC-CO2 system can enhance the solubility parameter of SC-CO2 solvent significantly, and the solubility parameter boosts with the raising of the cosolvent concentration. The cosolvent effect on solubility parameter of SC-CO2 solvent decreases in the order: methanol, ethanol, acetone, cyclohexane. The hydrogen bonding ability of the cosolvent has significant effect on solubility parameter of SC-CO2 solvent via the strengthening of the interactions among the CO2 and cosolvent molecules.

Abstract:The solubility of 8-hydroxyquinoline lead, lead diethyldithiocarbamate, 8-hydroxyquinoline mercury and mercury diethyldithiocarbamate in supercritical carbon dioxide under different supercritical conditions was investigated by using supercritical extraction device. It was measured ranged from 308.15K to 328.15K for supercritical temperature, and 10 MPa to 30MPa for pressure. The solubility data of metal complexes were correlated and a mathematical model was put forward from a viewpoint of solvent association theory compared to Chrastil’s model. The results showed that SA model gives fairly good agreement with the experiment data.

Abstract:A linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) method was used to develop a predictive model for the diffusivities of organic solutes in supercritical CO2 at infinite dilution. The LSER model was based on the diffusivities of 18 solutes and 104 data points for sc-CO2 in the range of 32–60°C and 8–100MPa. The independent variables in the model were empirically determined descriptors of the solute molecules and the dipolarity/polarizability of CO2 at a given density. The model was tested for prediction accuracy by using the diffusivities of 10 solutes not included in the database. The model provided relative deviations less than 10% in the correlation and prediction of the diffusivities in supercritical CO2 of the organic solutes considered. The accuracy of the proposed LSER model is comparable with He–Yu [31] equation, which is the most effective correlation in the literatures. The coefficients of the model show that diffusivity in supercritical CO2 is strongly dependent on the dipolarity/polarizability of CO2. The hydrogen-bond basicity and dipolarity/polarizability of the solute have significant effects on the diffusivity, whereas the hydrogen-bond acidity and excess molar refractivity are less important. The logarithm of the solute's gas-to-hexadecane partition coefficient used to model dispersion interactions and cavity formation processes was found to be statistically insignificant.
