Abstract:A new fluorescein-based chemodosimeter (II) for Hg2+ ion was designed and synthesized, and it displayed excellent selective and sensitive toward Hg2+ ion over other commonly metal ions in aqueous media. II was a colorless, non-fluorescent compound. Upon addition of Hg2+ to the solution of II, the thiosemicarbazide moiety of II would undergo an irreversible desulfurization reaction to form its corresponding oxadiazole (IV), a colorful and fluorescent product. During this process, the spirocyclic ring of II was opened, causing instantaneous development of visible color and strong fluorescence emission in the range of 500–600nm. Based on the above mechanism, a fluorogenic Hg2+-selective chemodosimeter was developed. The fluorescence increase is linearly with Hg2+ concentration up to 1.0μmolL−1 with a detection limit of 8.5×10−10molL−1 (3σ). Compared with the rhodamine-type chemodosimeter, II is more stable in aqueous media and exhibits higher sensitivity toward Hg2+. The findings suggest that II will serve as a practical chemodosimeter for rapid detection of Hg2+ concentrations in realistic media.

Abstract:Anthraquinone derivatives with different substituents 1–3 were synthesized by introducing the urea group. Their cations' binding properties were investigated by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. Compared with 1 and 2, 3 with electron-withdrawing group (–NO2) showed a remarkable absorption change for Hg2+ over the other metal ions. The anthraquinone moiety and the N–H fragment of the urea moiety played key roles in sensing Hg2+. The different acidity of N–H fragments of the urea moiety, caused by electron push–pull properties of the substituents on the phenyl para position, is the main reason for recognition.

Abstract:The syntheses and photophysical properties of mercury sensors 2 and 3 (MS2 and MS3), two asymmetrically derivatized fluorescein-based dyes designed for Hg(II) detection, are described. These sensors each contain a single pyridyl-amine-thiol metal-binding moiety, form 1:1 complexes with Hg(II), and exhibit selectivity for Hg(II) over other Group 12 metals, alkali and alkaline earth metals, and most divalent first-row transition metals. Both dyes display superior brightness (Phi x epsilon) and fluorescence enhancement following Hg(II) coordination in aqueous solution. At neutral pH, the fluorescence turn-on derives from greater brightness due to increased molar absorptivity. At higher pH, photoinduced electron transfer quenching of the free dye is enhanced, and the Hg(II)-induced turn-on also benefits from alleviation of this pathway. MS2 can detect ppb levels of Hg(II) in aqueous solution, demonstrating its ability to identify environmentally relevant concentrations of Hg(II).

Abstract:An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active anthracene-based fluorescent chemodosimeter, anthracene-9-carbaldehyde hydrazone (ACH), was synthesized via a facile one-step reaction from anthracene-9-carbaldehyde (AC) and hydrazine monohydrate. The structure of probe ACH was completely characterized by a variety of methods, including MS, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. The probe ACH showed high specificity and excellent sensitivity for Hg 2+ in MeOH-water (9/1, v/v) solution, which exhibited an obvious fluorescence "turn-on" change with a mega Stokes shift of 157nm (λ Ex =256nm, λ Em =413nm) and a low detection limit of 5.67×10 −8 M. Studies of the sensing mechanism indicated that the fluorescence "turn-on" response was presumably owing to the Hg 2+ -promoted hydrolysis reaction of ACH to provide the intensely fluorescent AC. It was worth noting that the reaction-based probe could be successfully used to detect the concentration of Hg 2+ in real water samples and distinguish Hg 2+ on the filter papers and TLC plates. We expect this work can stimulate the emergence of preferable fluorescent chemodosimeter for practical application.

Abstract:The synthesis and crystal structure of an anionic phosphorescent iridium complex TBA[Ir(dfppy)2(NCS)2] (1) were reported. 1 can selectively detect Hg2+ with the help of UV–Vis absorption and emission spectra titration. In the presence of Hg2+, the obvious decrease of the luminescence intensity at 475nm was investigated, which could be observed by the naked eyes. The phosphorescence quantum efficiency in CH3CN solution changed from 0.07 to 0.00085. No obvious spectra changes were observed upon addition of a large excess of other transition metals. Due to its strong thiophilic affinity, the special chemical reaction induced by Hg2+ is responsible for the significant change of absorption and luminescence spectra, which is confirmed by ESI-MS.

Abstract:In the present work, we have synthesized amphiphilic anthraimidazoldione derivative that can form nanoassembly in the aqueous medium. The π-conjugated backbone with facile intramolecular charge transfer from the substituted aryl residue to anthraquinone unit attributed to the profound orange color. Despite having the metal ion chelating aminoethyl acetamide unit, the compound showed no interaction with metal ions in the aqueous medium. However, a highly selective color-changing response, from orange to yellow (Δλ ∼52 nm), was observed upon addition of Hg 2+ ion at micellar interface. Also, a turn-on fluorescence response (∼5.2-fold) was witnessed with Hg 2+ . It was observed that in addition to hydrophobic microenviroment, the orientation of molecules at water-surfactant interface also responsible for the chromogenic response towards Hg 2+ ion. The mechanistic investigation indicated that Hg 2+ ion coordinates with the aminoethyl acetamide unit, resulting restriction in the extent of intramolecular charge transfer. Considering such highly ratiometric response, the present system has been employed for analysis of Hg 2+ ion in diluted urine and blood serum samples. The high recovery values (95.4 % to 104.3 %) with relatively low standard deviations (< 4.2 %) indicated that the present system is fairly successful in screening of complex real-life samples. Finally, we have designed low-cost, reusable, chemically modified paper strips for on-location, rapid analysis of mercury ions.

Abstract:The sensing behavior of 2,5‐thienylene‐bridged tetrakis(2,6‐dichlorophenyl)‐[26]hexaphyrin (2) towards various metal ions and anions were investigated by UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. The molecular sensor using this strapped hexaphyrin (2) displayed highly selective and sensitive colorimetric responses to Cu2+ and Hg2+ in MeOH/THF. The spectral changes are distinctive enough in the visible region of the spectrum to enable naked‐eye detection. The detection limits of Cu2+ and Hg2+ using this chemo‐sensor in a mixed MeOH/THF solution were 1.978 and 1.283 μM, respectively, and 1.052 μM for F‐ in dichloromethane. Chemosensor 2,5‐thienylene strapped [26]hexaphyrin (2) shows absorption responses both a 1:1 molecular ratio for 2 interacting with Cu2+ and Hg2+ and a 1:2 ratio between 2 and F‐ ions.

Abstract:A tetraphenylethene (TPE)-modified rhodanine derivative was successfully designed and prepared, and this luminophor showed intramolecular charge transfer nature from the TPE unit to the rhodanine-3-acetic acid unit. Interestingly, this luminogen not only exhibited typical aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behavior but also showed good cell imaging performance. Remarkably, this AIEE-active TPE-containing rhodanine derivative possessed noticeable solvatochromic fluorescence effect involving multiple fluorescent colors of green, yellow-green, yellow, orange, and red. Meanwhile, this fluorescigenic compound displayed reversible mechanochromic fluorescence behavior based on the mutual transformation of between stable crystalline and metastable amorphous states. On the other hand, this multifunctional fluorophor could selectively and sensitively detect Hg 2+ in an acetonitrile solution. Furthermore, this chemosensor could also be used to detect Hg 2+ on test paper strips.

Abstract:In this work, two structurally novel isomeric diarylethene chemosensors based on a styrene-linked pyrido[2,3-b] pyrazine unit were synthesized by using Heck coupling reaction. Interestingly, the two reported chemosensors exhibited quick colorimetric sequential responses towards Hg2+ and then Sn2+. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity of the diarylethene-mercury dyad 1O ' was significantly quenched due to the formation of a new complex 1O-Hg2 thorn . 1O-Hg2 thorn could be used as a new platform for rapid detection of Sn2+, which involved a conspicuous fluorescence enhancement in the detection progress. Based on the fact that the fluorescence of luminogen 1O could be effectively adjusted by the stimulations of light and metal ions, an integrated combinational logic circuit was constructed with 365 nm UV light, Hg2+ and Sn2+ as input signals and the fluorescence intensity at 560 nm as output signals.

Abstract:A terpyridine derivative DPTP [di-(4-mediylphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyfidine] was conveniently synthesized from 2-bromopyridine via halogen-dance reaction, Kharash coupling and Stille coupling reaction. Then its corresponding ruthenium complex Ru-DPTP [NNN-4,4"-di-(4-methylphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine-N,N,N-tris(iso-thiocyanato)ruthenium(H) ammonium] was obtained and fully characterized by IR, UV-Vis, ESI MS and elemental analysis. The MLCT absorption band of Ru-DPTP was blue-shifted from 570 to 500 nm upon addition of Hg2+. Among a series of surveyed metal ions, the complex showed a unique recognition to Hg2+, indicating that it can be used as a selective colorimetric sensor for Hg2+.

Abstract:Two novel rhodamine-pyrene conjugated chemosensors were successfully designed and synthesized, which exhibited high affinity to Hg2+ ions. As ratiometric chemosensors, each displayed highly selective and sensitive colorimetric and fluorogenic dual-responses toward Hg2+. The comparison of two chemosensors indicated that the spirothiolactone containing sensor was superior to the spirolactone analog in sensing behavior when detecting Hg2+, presumably due to the thiophilic nature of mercury and the different sensing mechanisms in operation. Upon interaction with Hg2+, the spirothiolactone showed a 1:1 stoichiometry for the Hg2+ complex, accompanied with a weakened fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) behavior. Abstract:Hg2+ has a significant hazardous impact on the environment and ecosystem. There is a great demand for new methods with high selectivity and sensitivity to determine mercury in life systems and environments. In this paper, a novel turn-on Hg2+ fluorescent probe has been reported with a naphthalimide group. The Hg2+ fluorescent probe was designed by the inspiration of the well-known specific Hg2+-triggered thioacetal deprotection reaction. A 1,2-dithioalkyl group was chosen as the specific recognition site of Hg2+. The probe showed weak fluorescence without Hg2+, and the color of the solution was light yellow. In the presence of Hg2+, the probe reacted specifically with the mercury ion to produce an aldehyde and emitted strong fluorescence, and the color of the solution also turned light green, thus realizing the monitoring of the mercury ion. The Hg2+ fluorescent probe showed outstanding sensitivity and selectivity toward Hg2+. Furthermore, the Hg2+ fluorescent probe could work in a wide pH range. The linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity at 510 nm and the concentration of Hg2+ was obtained in a range of Hg2+ concentration from 2.5 × 10–7 to 1.0 × 10–5 M. The detection limit was found to be 4.0 × 10–8 M for Hg2+. Furthermore, with little cell toxicity, the probe was successfully applied to the confocal image of Hg2+ in PC-12 cells.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A novel thionocarbonate-coumarin-thiourea triad-based probe with dual recognition sites for sensing mercury (Hg2+) ion was developed. The synthesized probe possessed both fluorogenic ("off-on") and chromogenic (from colorless to blackish brown) sensing performance towards Hg2+ ions. The fluorescence intensity was increased by 70 fold after the addition of Hg2+. As expected, the probe exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ compared to other common competitive metal ions. The fluorescence intensity of the probe improved linearly with the increase of the concentration of Hg2+ (0-40 μM). Also, the minimum limit of detection (LOD) of the synthesized probe was 0.12 μM. Considering the importance of test feasibility in the harsh environment, the developed probe was applicable for detecting Hg2+ ions over a broad working pH range of 3-11. It is reliable and qualifies for the quantitative determination of Hg2+ concentrations in actual water samples. Finally, the probe achieved the bioimaging performance of Hg2+ in living cells and plants with good biocompatibility.

Abstract:A novel thioketal containing fluorescent dye 1OS was elaborately designed for mercury(II) determination, which not only integrated the benefits of the remarkable specificity of Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction and the robust emission of AIEgen in aggregated state, but also provided a surprising platform for ACQ-to-AIE switching, i.e. Hg2+-triggered ACQ to AIE transformation. Once encountered Hg2+ ions, the deprotection reaction happened immediately within seconds, accompanied with a conversion of 1OS (ACQ) to 1O (AIE). Excitedly, the probe shows remarkable selectivity and specificity towards Hg2+ both in solution, aggregated and solid states with significant fluorescence color change. When added trace Hg2+ ions into 1OS solution, its PL intensity declined completely with emission color changed from bright green to darkness with LOD as 0.36 mu M. Oppositely, a "turn on" signal was achieved in the aggregated state (fw = 98 %), which exhibited a dramatically enhancement of PL intensity along with fluorescent emission altered from darkness to brilliant yellow. Other common metal cations gave no interference to the probe. Meanwhile, the constructed test strip could "turn on" signify Hg2+ in water solution.
