Abstract:The master equation is derived for describing spatially correlated decoherence, which includes independent decoherence and collective decoherence as its special cases. Spatial correlation in the decoherence is measured by the correlation matrix or by the independence entropy. By applying the conventional quantum error correction schemes correcting for single-qubit errors, we calculate the state fidelity and demonstrate that these schemes are valid for reducing spatially correlated decoherence. Abstract:We have investigated the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of strongly magnetic chromium atoms. The long-range and anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction leads to an anisotropic deformation of the expanding Cr-BEC which depends on the orientation of the atomic dipole moments. Our measurements are consistent with the theory of dipolar quantum gases and show that a Cr-BEC is an excellent model system to study dipolar interactions in such gases.

Abstract:Quantum systems can be used to measure various quantities in their environment with high precision. Often, however, their sensitivity is limited by the decohering effects of this same environment. Dynamical decoupling schemes are widely used to filter environmental noise from signals, but their performance is limited by the spectral properties of the signal and noise at hand. Quantum error correction schemes have therefore emerged as a complementary technique without the same limitations. To date, however, they have failed to correct the dominant noise type in many quantum sensors, which couples to each qubit in a sensor in the same way as the signal. Here we show how quantum error correction can correct for such noise, which dynamical decoupling can only partially address. Whereas dynamical decoupling exploits temporal noise correlations in signal and noise, our scheme exploits spatial correlations. We give explicit examples in small quantum devices and demonstrate a method by which error-correcting codes can be tailored to their noise.

Abstract:We analyze the long time behavior of a quantum computer running a quantum error correction (QEC) code in the presence of a correlated environment. Starting from a Hamiltonian formulation of realistic noise models, and assuming that QEC is indeed possible, we find formal expressions for the probability of a faulty path and the residual decoherence encoded in the reduced density matrix. Systems with non-zero gate times (``long gates'') are included in our analysis by using an upper bound on the noise. In order to introduce the local error probability for a qubit, we assume that propagation of signals through the environment is slower than the QEC period (hypercube assumption). This allows an explicit calculation in the case of a generalized spin-boson model and a quantum frustration model. The key result is a dimensional criterion: If the correlations decay sufficiently fast, the system evolves toward a stochastic error model for which the threshold theorem of fault-tolerant quantum computation has been proven. On the other hand, if the correlations decay slowly, the traditional proof of this threshold theorem does not hold. This dimensional criterion bears many similarities to criteria that occur in the theory of quantum phase transitions.

Abstract:We show that space- and time-correlated single-qubit rotation errors can lead to high-weight errors in a quantum circuit when the rotation angles are drawn from heavy-tailed distributions. This leads to a breakdown of quantum error correction, yielding reduced or in some cases no protection of the encoded logical qubits. While heavy-tailed phenomena are prevalent in the natural world, there is very little research as to whether noise with these statistics exist in current quantum processing devices. Furthermore, it is an open problem to develop tomographic or noise spectroscopy protocols that could test for the existence of noise with such statistics. These results suggest the need for quantum characterization methods that can reliably detect or reject the presence of such errors together with continued first-principles studies of the origins of space- and time-correlated noise in quantum processors. If such noise does exist, physical or control-based mitigation protocols must be developed to mitigate this noise as it would severely hinder the performance of fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Abstract:The complexity of the error correction circuitry forces us to design quantum error correction codes capable of correcting a single error per error correction cycle. Yet, time-correlated error are common for physical implementations of quantum systems; an error corrected during the previous cycle may reoccur later due to physical processes specific for each physical implementation of the qubits. In this paper we study quantum error correction for a restricted class of time-correlated errors in a spin-boson model. The algorithm we propose allows the correction of two errors per error correction cycle, provided that one of them is time-correlated. The algorithm can be applied to any stabilizer code when the two logical qubits $\mid 0_L>$ and $\mid 1_L>$ are entangled states of $2^{n}$ basis states in $\mathcal{H}_{2^n}$.

Abstract:Cooperative effects in the loss (the amplitude damping) and decoherence (the phase damping) of the qubits (two-state quantum systems) due to the inevitable coupling to the same environment are investigated. It is found that the qubits undergo the dissipation coherently in this case. In particular, for a special kind of input states (called the coherence-preserving states), whose form depends on the type of the coupling, loss and decoherence in quantum memory are much reduced. Based on this phenomenon, a scheme by encoding the general input states of the qubits into the corresponding coherence-preserving states is proposed for reducing the cooperative loss and decoherence in quantum computation or communication.
Accurate optimal quantum error correction thresholds from coherent information

Abstract:Quantum error correcting (QEC) codes protect quantum information from decoherence, as long as error rates fall below critical error thresholds. In general, obtaining thresholds implies simulating the QEC procedure using, in general, sub-optimal decoding strategies. In a few cases and for sufficiently simple noise models, optimal decoding of QEC codes can be framed as a phase transition in disordered classical spin models. In both situations, accurate estimation of thresholds demands intensive computational resources. Here we use the coherent information of the mixed state of noisy QEC codes to accurately estimate the associated optimal QEC thresholds already from small-distance codes at moderate computational cost. We show the effectiveness and versatility of our method by applying it first to the topological surface and color code under bit-flip and depolarizing noise. We then extend the coherent information based methodology to phenomenological and quantum circuit level noise settings. For all examples considered we obtain highly accurate estimates of optimal error thresholds from small, low-distance instances of the codes, in close accordance with threshold values reported in the literature. Our findings establish the coherent information as a reliable competitive practical tool for the calculation of optimal thresholds of state-of-the-art QEC codes under realistic noise models.

Abstract:We exhibit a simple, systematic procedure for detecting and correcting errors using any of the recently reported quantum error-correcting codes. The procedure is shown explicitly for a code in which one qubit is mapped into five. The quantum networks obtained are fault tolerant, that is, they can function successfully even if errors occur during the error correction. Our construction is derived using a recently introduced group-theoretic framework for unifying all known quantum codes.

Abstract:Correlated noise across multiple qubits poses a significant challenge for achieving scalable and fault-tolerant quantum processors. Despite recent experimental efforts to quantify this noise in various qubit architectures, a comprehensive understanding of its role in qubit dynamics remains elusive. Here, we present an analytical study of the dynamics of driven qubits under spatially correlated noise, including both Markovian and non-Markovian noise. Surprisingly, we find that, while correlated classical noise only leads to correlated decoherence without increasing the quantum coherence in the system, the correlated quantum noise can be exploited to generate entanglement. In particular, we reveal that, in the quantum limit, pure dephasing noise induces a coherent long-range two-qubit Ising interaction that correlates distant qubits. In contrast, for purely transverse noise when qubits are subjected to coherent drives, the correlated quantum noise induces both coherent symmetric exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the qubits, as well as correlated relaxation, both of which give rise to significant entanglement. Remarkably, in this case, we uncover that the system exhibits distinct dynamical phases in different parameter regimes. Finally, we reveal the impact of spatio-temporally correlated 1/f noise on the decoherence rate, and how its temporal correlations restore lost entanglement. Our analysis not only offers critical insights into designing effective error mitigation strategies to reduce harmful effects of correlated noise, but also enables tailored protocols to leverage and harness noise-induced correlations for quantum information processing.

Correlated noise enhances coherence and fidelity in coupled qubits

Abstract:It is generally assumed that environmental noise arising from thermal fluctuations is detrimental to preserving coherence and entanglement in a quantum system. In the simplest sense, dephasing and decoherence are tied to energy fluctuations driven by coupling between the system and the normal modes of the bath. Here, we explore the role of noise correlation in an open-loop model quantum communication system whereby the ``sender'' and the ``receiver'' are subject to local environments with various degrees of correlation or anticorrelation. We introduce correlation within the spectral density by solving a multidimensional stochastic differential equations and introduce these into the Redfield equations of motion for the system density matrix. We find that correlation can enhance both the fidelity and purity of a maximally entangled (Bell) state. Moreover, by comparing the evolution of different initial Bell states, we show that one can effectively probe the correlation between two local environments. These observations may be useful in the design of high-fidelity quantum gates and communication protocols.

Mitigating Non-Markovian and Coherent Errors Using Quantum Process Tomography of Proxy States

Abstract:Detecting mitigating and correcting errors in quantum control is among the most pertinent contemporary problems in quantum technologies. We consider three of the most common bosonic error correction codes -- the CLY, binomial and dual rail and compare their performance under typical errors in bosonic systems. We find that the dual rail code shows the best performance. We also develop a new technique for error mitigation in quantum control. We consider a quantum system with large Hilbert space dimension, e.g., a qudit or a multi-qubit system and construct two $2- $ dimensional subspaces -- a code space, $\mathcal C = \text{span}\{|\bar{0}\rangle, |\bar{1}\rangle\}$ where the logical qubit is encoded and a ``proxy'' space $\mathcal P = \text{span}\{|\bar{0}'\rangle, |\bar{1}'\rangle\}$. While the qubit (i.e., $\mathcal C$) can be a part of a quantum circuit, the proxy (i.e., $\mathcal P$) remains idle. In the absence of errors, the quantum state of the proxy qubit does not evolve in time. If $\mathcal E$ is an error channel acting on the full system, we consider its projections on $\mathcal C$ and $\mathcal P$ represented as pauli transfer matrices $T_{\mathcal E}$ and $T'_{\mathcal E}$ respectively. Under reasonable assumptions regarding the origin of the errors, $T_{\mathcal E}$ can be inferred from $T'_{\mathcal E}$ acting on the proxy qubit and the latter can be measured without affecting the qubit. The latter can be measured while the qubit is a part of a quantum circuit because, one can perform simultaneous measurements on the logical and the proxy qubits. We use numerical data to learn an \textit{affine map} $\phi$ such that $T_{\mathcal E} \approx \phi(T'_{\mathcal E})$. We also show that the inversion of a suitable proxy space's logical pauli transfer matrix can effectively mitigate the noise on the two modes bosonic system or two qudits system.

Bounds on Autonomous Quantum Error Correction

Abstract:Autonomous quantum memories are a way to passively protect quantum information using engineered dissipation that creates an "always-on'' decoder. We analyze Markovian autonomous decoders that can be implemented with a wide range of qubit and bosonic error-correcting codes, and derive several upper bounds and a lower bound on the logical error rate in terms of correction and noise rates. For many-body quantum codes, we show that, to achieve error suppression comparable to active error correction, autonomous decoders generally require correction rates that grow with code size. For codes with a threshold, we show that it is possible to achieve faster-than-polynomial decay of the logical error rate with code size by using superlogarithmic scaling of the correction rate. We illustrate our results with several examples. One example is an exactly solvable global dissipative toric code model that can achieve an effective logical error rate that decreases exponentially with the linear lattice size, provided that the recovery rate grows proportionally with the linear lattice size.

Optimal quantum codes for preventing collective amplitude damping

Abstract:Collective decoherence is possible if the departure between quantum bits is smaller than the effective wave length of the noise field. Collectivity in the decoherence helps us to devise more efficient quantum codes. We present a class of optimal quantum codes for preventing collective amplitude damping to a reservoir at zero temperature. It is shown that two qubits are enough to protect one bit quantum information, and approximately $L+ 1/2 \log_2((\pi L)/2)$ qubits are enough to protect $L$ qubit information when $L$ is large. For preventing collective amplitude damping, these codes are much more efficient than the previously-discovered quantum error correcting or avoiding codes.

Abstract:Spin ensembles are promising quantum technological platforms, but their utility relies on the ability to perform quantum error correction (QEC) for the specific decoherence in these systems. Typical QEC for ensembles requires addressing individually resolved qubits, but this is practically challenging in most realistic architectures. Here, we propose QEC schemes for unresolvable spin ensembles. By using degenerate superpositions of excited states, which are fundamentally mixed, we find codes that can protect against both individual and collective errors, including dephasing, decay, and pumping. We show how information recovery can be achieved with only collective measurement and control, and illustrate its applications in extending memory lifetime and loss-tolerant sensing.

Abstract:We present and analyze protocols for fault-tolerant quantum computing using color codes. We present circuit-level schemes for extracting the error syndrome of these codes fault-tolerantly. We further present an integer-program-based decoding algorithm for identifying the most likely error given the syndrome. We simulated our syndrome extraction and decoding algorithms against three physically-motivated noise models using Monte Carlo methods, and used the simulations to estimate the corresponding accuracy thresholds for fault-tolerant quantum error correction. We also used a self-avoiding walk analysis to lower-bound the accuracy threshold for two of these noise models. We present and analyze two architectures for fault-tolerantly computing with these codes: one with 2D arrays of qubits are stacked atop each other and one in a single 2D substrate. Our analysis demonstrates that color codes perform slightly better than Kitaev's surface codes when circuit details are ignored. When these details are considered, we estimate that color codes achieve a threshold of 0.082(3)%, which is higher than the threshold of $1.3 \times 10^{-5}$ achieved by concatenated coding schemes restricted to nearest-neighbor gates in two dimensions but lower than the threshold of 0.75% to 1.1% reported for the Kitaev codes subject to the same restrictions. Finally, because the behavior of our decoder's performance for two of the noise models we consider maps onto an order-disorder phase transition in the three-body random-bond Ising model in 2D and the corresponding random-plaquette gauge model in 3D, our results also answer the Nishimori conjecture for these models in the negative: the statistical-mechanical classical spin systems associated to the 4.8.8 color codes are counterintuitively more ordered at positive temperature than at zero temperature.
