Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) was a communication system that did not depend on the brain' s normal output pathways of the peripheral nerves and muscles. BCI provided a new communication channel for the patients with severe neuromuscular disorders, and also had potential values in virtual reality, entertainment and aviation. Recently, BCI developed rapidly, and its researches mostly concentrated on feature extraction and translation algorithm. Cortical evoked potentials such as steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and P300 were widely applied in BCI because of simple feature extraction and requiring little training. The progress in SSVEP-based and P300-based BCI was reviewed, and its experimental paradigms and limitations were analyzed in this paper.

PROGRESS IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOPHYSICS

Abstract:In this paper we reviewed the latest development and discussed several problems in current research on brain-computer-interfaces (BCIs), such as overestimating the function of the human brain and lacking understanding on the way the brain stores information. Based on the model of "2D code" data form for brain functions, we argued that current BCI technical solutions are only applicable to some simple application scenarios, such as understanding the emotional type of the subject, the state of life activities, and controlling the external instruments, but they are not capable to obtain accurate details such as memory and thinking in the brain. On the other hand, we believed that here is a large space for the development of information input technologies, i.e., the information input technology. For example, a potential brain stimulation device with multiple regulatory effects and multiple control methods like physical and biochemical technologies may be widely used to treat brain diseases, such as depression and epilepsy, as well as for short-term enhancement of brain power. This work may shed some light on the current research field of brain-computer interface.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication and control system to set up a message or command pathway to external world independent to brain normal output pathway (peripheral nerves and muscles). By this method, people with severe neuromuscular dysfunction can directly express their thought and manipulate the external devices without using human language and actions. This will greatly enhance the ability of these people to manage external event and improve their quality of life. The development of BCI depends on the interdisciplinary clasp of neuroscience, engineering, psychology, computer, and rehabilitation. It has very important scientific significance, academic value and wide application prospects, and has become a hot spot. This paper reviewed the basic principle, research methods, and working progress of BCI in current studies.

Abstract:Brain computer interfaces (BCI) provide a direct communication link between the brain and a computer or other external devices. They offer an extended degree of freedom either by strengthening or by substituting human peripheral working capacity and have potential applications in various fields such as rehabilitation, affective computing, robotics, gaming, and neuroscience. Significant research efforts on a global scale have delivered common platforms for technology standardization and help tackle highly complex and non-linear brain dynamics and related feature extraction and classification challenges. Time-variant psycho-neurophysiological fluctuations and their impact on brain signals impose another challenge for BCI researchers to transform the technology from laboratory experiments to plug-and-play daily life. This review summarizes state-of-the-art progress in the BCI field over the last decades and highlights critical challenges.

Abstract:A brain-computer interface (BCI) establishes a direct communication channel between a brain and an external device. With recent advances in neurotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI), the brain signals in BCI communication have been advanced from sensation and perception to higher-level cognition activities. While the field of BCI has grown rapidly in the past decades, the core technologies and innovative ideas behind seemingly unrelated BCI systems have never been summarized from an evolutionary point of view. Here, we review various BCI paradigms and present an evolutionary model of generalized BCI technology which comprises three stages: interface, interaction, and intelligence (I3). We also highlight challenges, opportunities, and future perspectives in the development of new BCI technology.

Abstract:Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are innovative systems that facilitate direct communication between the human brain and external devices. Leveraging advances in neuroscience and engineering, BCIs can decode neural activity, allowing users to control computers, prosthetics, or even communicate thoughts without the need for peripheral motor activity. While primarily developed for assisting individuals with motor or communication disabilities, the potential applications span from gaming to advanced robotics. Despite rapid progress, challenges remain in achieving high-resolution decoding and ensuring long-term stability. As the field advances, ethical considerations about privacy, security, and human augmentation also emerge. This paper aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the field of BCI technology. The first part illustrates the remarkable evolution undergone by BCI, from electroencephalography (EEG) to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The next part mainly describes the principle of BCI and the devices that are used for processing the interface. The following part highlights the challenge faced by BCI and how ethics and security should be deliberated.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state of research on Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and their potential applications. The objective of this study was to gather information from various sources, including journal articles, conference papers, and books, to analyze the advancements and limitations of BCIs. A systematic literature review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar, with specific keywords related to BCIs and their applications. The selected studies were thoroughly analyzed to identify common themes, methodologies, and key findings. The main contributions of this review include an overview of different types of BCIs, their applications in fields such as medicine, entertainment, and education, and the challenges and limitations faced by BCI technology. The findings highlight the potential of BCIs in restoring motor function, improving the quality of life for individuals with various conditions, and enhancing human-technology interaction. Furthermore, the review identifies future research directions, including signal processing improvements, exploring hybrid and multimodal approaches, conducting long-term real-world studies, addressing ethical considerations, and prioritizing user-centred design. Finally, it looks at current trends in research related to BCI use for medical, educational, and other purposes, as well as potential future applications of this technology. The paper concludes by highlighting some key challenges that still need to be addressed before widespread adoption can occur. By presenting an up-to-date assessment of the state-of-the-art in BCI technology, this paper will provide valuable insight into where this field is heading in terms of progress and innovation.

Abstract:Brain signal patterns generated in the central nervous system of brain-computer interface (BCI) users are closely related to BCI paradigms and neural coding. In BCI systems, BCI paradigms and neural coding are critical elements for BCI research. However, so far there have been few references that clearly and systematically elaborated on the definition and design principles of the BCI paradigm as well as the definition and modeling principles of BCI neural coding. Therefore, these contents are expounded and the existing main BCI paradigms and neural coding are introduced in the review. Finally, the challenges and future research directions of BCI paradigm and neural coding were discussed, including user-centered design and evaluation for BCI paradigms and neural coding, revolutionizing the traditional BCI paradigms, breaking through the existing techniques for collecting brain signals and combining BCI technology with advanced AI technology to improve brain signal decoding performance. It is expected that the review will inspire innovative research and development of the BCI paradigm and neural coding.

Abstract:A brain–computer interface (BCI) can connect humans and machines directly and has achieved successful applications in the past few decades. Many new BCI paradigms and algorithms have been developed in recent years. Therefore, it is necessary to review new progress in BCIs. This paper summarizes progress for EEG-based BCIs from the perspective of encoding paradigms and decoding algorithms, which are two key elements of BCI systems. Encoding paradigms are grouped by their underlying neural meachanisms, namely sensory- and motor-related, vision-related, cognition-related and hybrid paradigms. Decoding algorithms are reviewed in four categories, namely decomposition algorithms, Riemannian geometry, deep learning and transfer learning. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of both modern primary paradigms and algorithms, making it helpful for those who are developing BCI systems.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies have developed as a game changer, altering how humans interact with computers and opening up new avenues for understanding and utilizing the power of the human brain. The goal of this research study is to assess recent breakthroughs in BCI technologies and their future prospects. The paper starts with an outline of the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin BCI technologies. It examines the many forms of BCIs, including as invasive, partially invasive, and non-invasive interfaces, emphasizing their advantages and disadvantages. The progress of BCI hardware and signal processing techniques is investigated, with a focus on the shift from bulky and invasive systems to more portable and user-friendly options. Following that, the article delves into the important advances in BCI applications across several fields. It investigates the use of BCIs in healthcare, particularly in neurorehabilitation, assistive technology, and cognitive enhancement. BCIs' potential for boosting human capacities such as communication, motor control, and sensory perception is being thoroughly researched. Furthermore, the article investigates developing BCI applications in gaming, entertainment, and virtual reality, demonstrating how BCI technologies are growing outside medical and therapeutic settings. The study also gives light on the problems and limits that prevent BCIs from being widely adopted. Ethical concerns about privacy, data security, and informed permission are addressed, highlighting the importance of strong legislative frameworks to enable responsible and ethical usage of BCI technologies. Furthermore, the study delves into technological issues such as increasing signal resolution and precision, increasing system reliability, and enabling smooth connection with existing technology. Abstract:As a new communication system that aims to replace normal output of the central nervous system, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) has rapidly developed in past decades. However, the speed and reliability of current BCI systems remain far below that of conventional communication systems. Recently, visual BCIs have become popular because of the high communication speeds, ease of user training, and low user variation. But, building robust and practical BCI systems still poses a great challenge to researchers. This paper focuses on visual BCI systems, including BCIs based on brain responses to exogenous visual stimuli and endogenous potentials linked to the subject's reaction to the visual stimuli. The paper will review the existing visual BCI systems and explore the challenges in future development.

Abstract:Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an advanced and multidisciplinary active research domain based on neuroscience, signal processing, biomedical sensors, hardware, etc. Since the last decades, several groundbreaking research has been conducted in this domain. Still, no comprehensive review that covers the BCI domain completely has been conducted yet. Hence, a comprehensive overview of the BCI domain is presented in this study. This study covers several applications of BCI and upholds the significance of this domain. Then, each element of BCI systems, including techniques, datasets, feature extraction methods, evaluation measurement matrices, existing BCI algorithms, and classifiers, are explained concisely. In addition, a brief overview of the technologies or hardware, mostly sensors used in BCI, is appended. Finally, the paper investigates several unsolved challenges of the BCI and explains them with possible solutions.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI), an emerging technology that allows communication between brain and computer, has attracted a great deal of research in recent years. Studies have shown experimental results demonstrating that this technology can restore the capabilities of physically challenged people, hence improving the quality of their lives. In addition, BCI has demonstrated remarkable achievements in entertainment and gaming, education, marketing, automation and control, among other science and engineering fields. Notwithstanding its broad range of applications, we noted a paucity of studies that discuss the potential threats of the technology to humans. While most studies focus on the development of BCI applications, efforts should equally be invested to overcome the threats (e.g., security and privacy concerns) and make the technology useful. This work provides our opinions and hypotheses on the future of BCI in revolutionizing our experiences. Furthermore, the work introduces various threats that may negatively impact further advancement of the brain-computer interface field. We have, in addition, proposed a functional model of the BCI system that may address privacy and security issues for the networked BCI applications connected over the Internet. This study opens interesting research opportunities for early and experienced researchers.
