Case Study of a Web-based Intervention for College Student's Internet Addiction

Abstract:Objective: To illustrate the effectiveness of a web based intervention of internet addiction(IA) in college students.Methods: The pilot study involved the development of an online expert system named Healthy Online Self-helping Center(HOSC) as an intervention tool to treat IA.The system included 4 modules: Ready to start,Understanding myself,Goal of change,and Methods of change.Three cases were reported in this study to illustrate the effectiveness HOSC had on changing college students' Internet addiction behavior.Results: The intervention could effectively reduce two cases' online hours per week as well as their IA scores,and improve online satisfaction and legitimate ratio of internet usage at a 1-month follow-up.Nevertheless,the third case had limited benefits from the intervention.The interview revealed that the intervention could arise the participants' awareness of their internet related problems,increase their motivation to change,and learn the methods of how to change.Conclusion: The HOSC program has potential values when applied in a large scale of population.
