Abstract:This paper discusses some important problems that China is facing in GIS specialty talents education based on a primary investigation into the present situation of China's college GIS specialization education. First, according to the disciplinary characteristics and talents conditions of GIS, three major characteristic features that GIS talents need possess are presented, together with the corresponding designing of the courses framework. Second, in accordance with the trend of world higher education development, this paper puts forward three different targets and their corresponding modes for college GIS talents education in the 21st century, with an aim to connect with the international GIS education. Third, in order to promote the quality of education effectively, this paper also advances some opinions on the tasks in today's upcoming education reformation, so as to ensure the development of China's GIS talents education in correct direction and hence to meet the urgent needs of specialists in China's economic construction and scientific development.
