Abstract:The SHG active nontraditional LB architectures of monolayers and multilayers were fabricated based on molecular interactions of hydrogen bonding. After photopolymerization of the diacetylene groups, the SHG thermal stability of the obtained LB films could be improved substantially and all the polymerized films exhibited unique SHG thermal rebounding phenomena.

Abstract:Multilayer nanocomposite films composed of negative charged Ag nanosized particles and cationic polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) molecules were fabricated on polymer modified single-crystal silicon and flat glass slides by a layer-by-layer (LBL) molecular self-assembly technique. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the formed Ag particles successfully absorbed onto the positively charged surfaces. The atomic force microscopy image of a two-cycle Ag/PAH bilayer film showed that no surface damage or defects existed on the thin-films surface. The Ag particles were densely and homogeneously distributed on the surface and relatively uniform in size. Goniometry was employed to verify the assembly process and the water contact angles oscillated regularly, depending on the composition of the outermost layer. By using the LBL deposition technique, a molecular-level ordered multilayer film with the thickness up to 40 layers (20 bilayers) was obtained. Results from UV–vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements revealed that the self-assembly of the Ag/PAH multilayer film was well quantitative and reproducible. Thus we can conclude that the consecutive LBL deposition technique is a feasible and effective way to produce multilayer film and control the surface properties.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical properties of LB(Langmuir-Blodgett) films of four hemicyanine dye derivatives have been studied by optical second harmonic generation, UV-Vis absorption spectrum and isotherms. The relation of the �� to the molecular structure was investigated and the main reason resulting in the �� differences was discussed as well. The sequence of polar chemical groups was proved. The difference of degree of aggregation in LB films was analyzed. Quality of LB films was compared through the relation of optical second harmonic signal intensity to the layer number of dye multilayers.

Abstract:There is growing interest in the study of the classic Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) mono-molecular layers in recent years. Linear optical properties of LB film have been studied thoroughly with surface plasmon spectroscopy [1], but their nonlinear characteristics have not yet been explored. On the other hand, it is already known that second harmonic generation (SHG) is surface-specific for the medium with inversion symmetry and is sensitive to the adsorbed molecules [2], hence the study of LB film with SHG technique is very promising. In this paper, we present the result on the nonlinear property of LB film with arachidic acid [CH3(CH2)18COOH] as our example. We excite the surface plasmons to enhance the gHG so that we can use a rather low-power incident laser beam to prevent the LB film from being damaged when a reasonable amount of SHG signal can be detected.

Abstract:A novel method designed to determine the chromophore orientation in a Langmuir Blodgett (LB) monolayer of hemicyanine dye by second harmonic generation (SHG) is reported. A hemicyanine LB monolayer was deposited on one side of a glass substrate and a stilbazium salt monolayer, whose chromophore orientation was known, was deposited on the other side as a reference. We have observed the interference patterns of the transmitted SHG light fields from both layers when the substrate was rotated. We found that the second-order non-linear polarizability beta of hemicyanine dye is in the opposite sense in relation to that of stilbazium salt. Our experimental outcome confirms that the -N(CH3)2 group of hemicyanine dye points to the hydrophilic glass substrate.

Abstract:The Langmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of a novel crowned [60]fullero-pyrrolidine(CFP) were produced in different conditions. Macroscopic second-harmonic generation of the LB film was investigated by means of AM1 Hamiltonian as well as experiments. The monolayer LB film displayed a periodic fringe pattern. A linear dependence of second-harmonic intensity on the number of layers was observed. The second-order molecular susceptibility χ(2) and hyperpolarizability β were evaluated to be 3.2×10−8 and 8.3×10−29esu.

Abstract:Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film of a hemicyanine derivative, (E)-N-hexadecyl-4-[2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)ethenyl]pyridinium bromide(Hc) was fabricated. The Langmuir film of He exhibited good transfer behaviour. Optical second harmonic generation from the LB film was measured. Macroscopic second-order susceptibility, molecular hyperpolarizability and tilt angle for the molecules on a substrate were estimated to be 7.06 X 10(-6) esu, 6.47 X 10(-27) esu, and 31.6 degrees respectively.

Abstract:Two novel ionic combined amphiphilic nonlinear optical bis-chromophore zinc complexes: bis(E)-[2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)ethenyl]-1-octadecyl pyridinium bis (2-thione-1,3-dithiol-4,5-dimercapto)zinc (3) and bis(E)-[2-(4-dimethyl amino phenyl) ethenyl]-1-octadecyl quinolinium bis (2-thione-1,3-dithiol-4,5-dimercapto) zinc (4) were synthesized by combining a bis-negatively charged zinc complex anion: bis (2-thione-1,3-dithiol-4,5-dimercapto) zinc with a hemicyanine cation (E)-[2-(4-dimethylamino phenyl) ethenyl]-1-octadecyl pyridinium (1) or a quinoline modified hemicyanine (E)-[2-(4-dimethyl amino phenyl) ethenyl]-1-octadecyl quinolinium (2). Their Langmuir films at the air/water interface, the transfer of the Langmuir films to form LB films and the vertical homogeneity of the LB films were investigated. The Langmuir films of the bis-chromophore complexes are more stable than their corresponding dye iodides. Strong second-order nonlinearities from the LB monolayers were observed and the second-order susceptibilities (χzzz(2)) were evaluated to be 230 pm V−1 for 3 and 330 pm V−1 for 4, which were 1.9 or 1.7 times that of the corresponding dye iodide.

Abstract:Multilayers consisting of bilayer alternation of hemicyanine dye and cadmium stearate have been prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. x-ray diffraction and optical absorption spectra are used to characterize their periodic structures and optical properties. The results show that a well ordered superlattice is produced and the hemicyanine dye is in non-aggregated formation in the alternating multilayers.

Abstract:A vertical dipping method is normally employed to prepare polyimide (PI) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films for liquid crystal (LC) alignment due to its dipping effects. In this paper, however, we exploited a horizontal method to make PI LB alignment layers on a novel Langmuir trough using a flowing subphase. The surface morphology of PI LB film deposited on a graphite substrate was studied by atomic force microscopy. Experimental results give evidences that the polymer chains are oriented in the how direction, along which LC molecules are aligned homogeneously. Thus the alignment of LCs may act through the orientation of PI molecules.

Abstract:The amphiphilic C-60-dendrimer conjugates 1 and 2 with one and two glycodendron headgroups, respectively, form stable, ordered monomolecular Langmuir layers at the air-water interface. The bulky glycodendron headgroups in 1 and 2 are very effective in suppressing fullerene aggregation, resulting in reversible compression and expansion behavior. The absence of fullerene aggregation was also revealed by the UV-vis spectra of the Langmuir monolayers and by Brewster angle microscopy. The monolayers of 1 and 2 were transferred successfully as X-type Langmuir-Blodgett films onto quartz slides; such films could have potential applications in optical technology and as biosensors for glycoproteins.

Abstract:Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of hemicyanine dye were deposited onto glass substrates from aqueous subphase. The concentration of potassium iodide (KI) in the subphase was found to have a remarkable effect on both the isotherms and second harmonic generation (SHG) signals of the monolayers. SHG from mixed hemicyanine-arachidic acid LB monolayers prepared with and without KI in the subphase, and SHG from stilbazium salt (which has the same chromophore as hemicyanine except for substitution of the I- ion for Br- in the latter) LB monolayer were also carefully studied. The results of these experiments confirm that the I- ions in the subphase play an important role not only in disintegrating the formation of H aggregates in hemicyanine LB monolayers but also in increasing the monomeric hyperpolarizability beta as a result of changing the charge distributions in dye molecules.

Abstract:The surfactant-capped ZnS nanoparticulate multilayer film has been fabricated by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. ZnS LB firm was investigated by the small-angle x-ray diffraction(XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The results indicate that ZnS nanoparticulate LB film is one-dimensional superlattice.

Abstract:Films of some small molecules on hydroxylated silica surfaces have been prepared successfully by the self-assembly technique, using the condensation of the CHO group of 4-substituted benzaldehyde with the NH2 group of 4-substituted aniline derivatives. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in all the monolayers of the chromophores and changed with different pi-electron systems. The maximum chi((2)) was 7.9 X 10(-10) esu and the orientation angles of the chromophore dipoles of all the films were 33-38 degrees. This method is capable of generating multilayer films. For a Z-type multilayer, the SHG signal increases quadratically with the number of chromophore layers. The films have high structural stability.

Abstract:We report here a new kind of Langmuir Blodgett (LB) film of crown ether with side chains containing mesogenic side chains of biphenyl. The fluorescence spectra of the LB film indicates that all the molecules exist in the "excimer" state. X-Ray experiments of the LB film shows that the layered structure is well organized, and each monolayer has the same uniform thickness about 33 angstrom.

Abstract:A bivalent zinc complex anion: bis(2-thione-1,3-dithiol-4,5-dimercapto)zinc, has been chosen to balance several non-linear optical (NLO) dye cations in the design and synthesis of a series of novel bis-chromophore complex dyes. The Langmuir film-forming properties of these new NLO complex dyes at the air/water interface, the stability and second-order non-linear optical properties of the monolayer and Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer films were investigated. Results show that both the film-forming properties and NLO coefficiencies were improved greatly when the zinc complex anion was incorporated into four types of NLO-active organic dyes.

Abstract:Hemin (iron(III) protoporphyrin IX chloride) and mixed hemin/n-octadecylamine (ODA) with the molar ratio of 1:2 were used to investigate the Langmuir monolayer behavior and to prepare the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. It showed that well-defined Langmuir monolayers were formed at the air-water interface and could be successfully transferred onto solid substrates. UV-vis spectra of hemin indicated the formation of H-aggregate in a LB matrix for the blue shift of the Soret band from 400 nm in solution to 370 nm in LB film. The inlay of ODA molecules partly reduced the aggregation of hemin molecules. Both the small-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of hemin and mixed hemin/ODA LB multilayers exhibited an ordered layer structure in an LB matrix with the d-value of bilayer hemin equal to 4.8 nm. Surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) was used to study the photoinduced interfacial charge-transfer process between a monolayer or multilayer of hemin and mixed hemin/ODA LB films on n- and p-type Si substrates. The results showed that the hemin LB monolayer film had a photosensitization effect on n-type Si. Particularly, the photovoltaic response value at the region of 400 nm which corresponds to the Soret band absorption of hemin molecules was increased 6-fold. The mixed hemin/ODA LB monolayer and multilayer films increased the photovoltaic conversion efficiency by separating the hemin molecules into individual ones with about a 15-fold and 7-fold increment of response value at the Soret band, respectively. But the SPS response value of the hemin LB multilayer film was decreased almost 20-fold and the photovoltaic conversion efficiency was largely reduced.

Abstract:Both the Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of two C60-glycine ester derivatives, C60(C6H9NO4) (1) and C60(C8H13NO4) (2), have been prepared at the air/water interface. The Langmuir films can be readily transferred onto hydrophilic quartz substrates in Z type to form LB films. The LB film of 1 has good vertical homogeneity as indicated by UV-VIS spectra and a SHG study. The second- and third-order molecular hyperpolarizabilities β and γ have been determined to be (2.3 ± 1.0) × 10−29, 3.4 × 10−31 esu for 1 and (1.9 ± 0.8) × 10−29, 3.3 × 10−31 esu for 2, respectively.
