Abstract:With media integration advancing to a deeper construction phase, the pattern of city community communication also develops and transforms in the accelerated integration, hence exhibiting new communication paradigm and presentation forms. The present essay focuses on the dynamic model of community communication. By analyzing the nature, transformation, ideology condition of community communication, we intend to summarize five types of communication forces:driving, transmitting, clustering, ritualizing and structuring. Besides, we exert emphasis on such new practical features as idiosoma communication, landscape communication and personal ritual occurring nowadays, and attempt to disclose its repositioning in the construction process of the state and the region.

Abstract:The emergence of new information and communication technologies and new social communication practices has called for the transformation of communication studies.Communication researchers have been asking a number of questions:Can the new information and communication technologies lead to a paradigm shift in communication theories?Are classic communication theories still applicable to the new media environment?What are the new research questions that emerge in the new media age?What are the interactions between the new information and communication technologies and new media research?How do the new media studies transform the current communication research?How should Chinese new media research be developed under the background of globalization and unique context of Chinese society and culture ? Based on the review of previous research,this study analyzes three approaches to new media studies,namely social scientific,critical,and interpretive paradigms,and reveals three findings.First,it is the changing communication activities and practices in which people engage that lead to the changing views of communication,such as a shift from″media-audience″study to ″new media-user″study.Moreover,the development of new media industry not only generates new research objects and theories,but offers new perspectives and methods to test classic theories.Second,in examining the relationship between new media technologies and social change,this study concludes that technological determinism is usually a dominant paradigm in the early phase of new media technologies.As these new technologies diffuse,researchers will turn to a social shaping perspective that focuses on how new media technologies are shaped by various social forces on the one hand,and are shaping social life in socio-historical contexts on the other.Third,the emergence of new media events has become a unique and influential communication phenomenon that attracts the attention of a large number of Chinese communication researchers.Nevertheless,most of these studies are case studies and are limited to the application of western theories to the Chinese society,thus failing to provide any insight into the communication mechanism in the Chinese new media environment.Against such a backdrop,this study suggests apossible direction for Chinese scholars to facilitate a″cultural shift″of new media research,to adopt the″thick description″method of cultural sociology to reveal the specific implications of new media events,and to uncover the socio-psychological consequences of these events and their associated social factors in the Chinese context.The goal is to highlight the interplay of different social forces in new media studies in transitional China.Meanwhile,scholars should take advantage of new media technologies to develop new research methods and procedures,to explore unique research questions in the Chinese social and cultural context,and to generate new theories that can facilitate the development of communication research.

Abstract:The growing number of new urban migrants is a critical issue facing the transitional China.Whether these new migrants can adapt to the new city life and achieve their life goals is closely related to the economic development and social harmony of the overall Chinese society.Among all the factors that may influence the quality of life of urban migrants,the role of media is increasingly salient.This study focuses on the impact of social media on new urban migrants' social integration and subjective well-being.Based on an online survey of urban migrants in Hangzhou,this study revealed that social media use can indeed contribute to urban migrants' social integration,particularly their perceived social identity and weak social ties,but helps little with strong social support and real world social participation.In addition,while social media use does influence urban migrants' subjective well-being,different types of use may have different effects.If urban migrants use social media for writing and self-expression,they will feel happier.In contrast,if they use social media for reading and social observation,they will feel less happy.Finally,urban migrants' social integration,particularly their level of social identity,is significantly associated with their subjective well-being.

Abstract:The Metaverse foretells a new round of technological innovation and network integration in the long history of digital revolution. It will not only change the internet industry but also reshape the field of communication. Although the concept of “Metamedia” precedes the Metaverse, it accurately predicts the dialectical relationship between new media and old media in the digital age, which is always constituting, shaping and relying on each other. Based on this relationship, the Metaverse is strengthening a “communication about communication”, that is, the process of “meta-communication”. As a space for Metamedia and metacommunication, the Metaverse, with its internal mechanism and technical characteristics, recalls context and consensus, voices and speech, and at the same time reveals the reflexivity and the infrastructure nature of the media that are neglected before. At the same time, the Metaverse could be disembodied, unreal, closed and without privacy, posing serious risks to this new communication revolution.

Abstract:Two affordances of digital communication technologies, persistent contact and pervasive awareness, are ushering in fundamental change to the structure of community. These affordances break from the mobility narrative that has described community since the rise of urban industrialism, including accounts of networked individualism and a postindustrial or a network society. In contrast to images of late modernity, which suggest that mobility will be maximized to the point where people are nearly free from the constraints of time, space, and social bonds, persistent–pervasive community renews the constraints and opportunities of premodern community structure. As a result of persistence—a counterforce to mobility—relationships and the social contexts where they are formed are less transitory than at any time in modern history. Through the ambient, lean, asynchronous nature of social media, awareness supplements surveillance with the informal watchfulness typified in preindustrial community. It provides for closeness and information exchange unlike what can be communicated through other channels. Social media and the algorithms behind them generate not only context collapse but an audience problem that, when managed through a dynamic balance between broadcasting and monitoring content, enhances indicators of awareness and availability of social ties. Persistent–pervasive community represents a period of metamodernity. It is a hybrid of preindustrial and urban-industrial community structures that will affect the availability of social capital, the success of collective action, the cost of caring, deliberation around important issues, and how lives are linked over the life course and across generations.

Abstract:: Traditional rural communities have been profoundly damaged by rising mobility and openness in rural society, changing farmers into "atomized" entities, and communal identity has become illusive. We performed an in-depth analysis in Village L, Chongqing, using the constitutive community communication theory and the research methodology of cyber-ethnography, to evaluate the function of WeChat groups in altering local identity and sustaining rural order. According to the study, L village residents who are gone from their hometowns can establish a "virtual presence" by joining WeChat. The social relationships and structures of the rural community are reorganized in the "public space" created by WeChat groups, thereby realizing the reconstruction of the rural community.

Abstract:Community vitality is essential to human health and quality of life through promoting various human activities. However, many Chinese cities witnessed declining vitality during massive suburbanization. Exploring community vitality is an effective way to measure the attractiveness and cohesion of community development towards better governance and planning design. However, extant literature overlooks the disparity in community vitality between core areas and periphery and corresponding driving factors. Therefore, we examined the core-periphery disparity of community vitality in Chongqing based on mobile phone signaling data and explored the nonlinear effects of multi-scale factors using Machine Learning models. Results indicated that Chongqing has concentrated high vitality in core areas but dispersed low vitality in the periphery. We found that neighborhood-level factors (e.g., land use mixture) are prominent in influencing cores' vitality, while community-level factors (e.g., building density) are critical in fostering peripheral vitality. Inner sky view indexes exhibit a negative-to-positive effect on vitality in the cores. Higher road intersection density promotes vitality in the periphery when exceeding a certain threshold. The relative importance of proximity to the (sub)centers and parks varied between daytime and nighttime. We call for targeted measures to enhance community vitality within effective ranges.

Abstract:The history of the evolution of media shows that the introduction of a new medium does not mean the end or death of an existing old medium. The continuing overall growth and expansion of the media industries during the last century supports this assertion. Will the emergence and development of digital media forms mean the death of the traditional media forms? Are the traditional media forms losing credibility and relevance? The answer is not in the affirmative. This is because when newer forms of communication media emerge, the older forms usually do not die, rather they continue to evolve and adapt. Digital media forms do not arise spontaneously and independently from old media. They are related and connected to old media. “Mediamorphosis” is the term used to describe how media forms evolve and adapt with each other. This is the bedrock of this paper. It is aimed at using analytical method to examine the contexts of mediamorphosis, digital media forms and how African traditional media forms have evolved, adapted and coexisted with the digital media forms. The study also establishes whether the traditional media forms have disappeared or not and whether they are still relevant in this era of digital media convergence. The study recommends among others, that the traditional media be used alongside these digital media forms to achieve the Millennium Developmental Goals (MDGs) of most governments in developing nations.

Abstract:There are a number of important technological changes in the history of human civilization.They often bring about revolutionary significance in the development of media.Mobile newspapers,digital journals,e-books and many other new media forms mark the arrival of the digital media age.New media technology has changed the form of newspapers,periodicals and books,as well as the way in which communication and cultural transmission take place.The great impact of new media turns out to be very similar to that of theory of cultural transmission pattern proposed by an anthropologist,Margaret Mead.The development of digital print media makes the experience of the new generation different from the previous ones,which reflects a reverse socialization procedure in Post-figurative culture.The reason for Post-figurative culture to turn into a new mode of cultural transmission is that changes in the world are always caused by the people who want to subvert the traditional ideas and concepts.In addition,the change in cultural transmission mode will influence the pattern of cultural production.
Use of Community Networks and Its Impact on Community Participation:A Case Study of Nanjing City

Abstract:In the 1970s,the United States launched a large number of practices and research focusing on "community network" in community informatics area.In recent years,with the rapid penetrating of information and communication technology in the daily life of community residents,virtual network platforms based on the community entity also appear in large numbers in urban communities of China,which brings an opportunity to improve community participation of urban residents.However,research by Chinese scholars rarely concerned with community networks,especially that quantitative research in this area has been few.Under this background and taking into consideration the practice of community networks in China,this study analyzed the characteristics of community network use and community participation of residents in Nanjing City based on a sample survey.Furthermore,the study used multiple-linear regression method to investigate the factors influencing community participation.The survey was conducted in 35 communities of Nanjing City by a research group at Nanjing University.The results show that overall community network use was characterized by high popularity and low intensity.Although the average coverage of community network use of Nanjing residents was high,the intensity of use only remained at the "occasional use" level.Most users were from newly built communities.As for the usage type of community networks,"mobile Internet" was most popular among the residents,and community QQ/WeChat groups showed the highest use intensity,followed by community Official Accounts/APPs,and community websites/community forums had the lowest use intensity.With regard to community "O2O",community participation was significantly promoted by using community networks.The use of community networks will enhance the depth of participation by promoting transaction type community participation.This article proposes that smart community development should compensate for the lack of attention to community networks and community involvement,and facilitate a retum to community public life through participation in community activities that increases the vitality of communities.

Abstract:Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) support community engagement of older people to improve their quality of life. Prior research has explored how Information and Communication Technologies(ICTs) enable older people to social connectedness, activity engagement, self-expression, and identity development in older self-organized communities. However, there have been comparatively few studies on how mainstream ICTs help older people manage and develop self-organized communities in China, where the ICTs context differs greatly from theWestern world. This study examined how older square dancing groups maintain and develop groups through WeChat groups and video communities. We interviewed fourteen elderly dancers from eight dance groups. We show how the WeChat group and the video community positively contributed to the internal management for maintaining cohesion and external presentation for seeking social identity. We present insights from members' historical and cultural lens, describe ICTs practice from experiences throughout the country's previous collectivization phase and provide design implications for further research in this direction.

Abstract:Community was first put forward by Ferdinand T?nnies, which refers to a close and cohesive group relationship. In the later research and development, the meaning of community gradually became an objective and material carrier and lost its original analytical value. Combined with the classic theories of T?nnies and Weber, and the promotion of related research by Parker and Fei Xiao tong, we can think that community has a dual connotation of emotion and space. The core feature of the community is the spillover utility beyond the instrumental goal of the organization, and it has a certain spatial basis. This paper proposes a two-dimensional analysis framework of“instrumental-spillover”, which includes three progressive parts: the operable characteristics of community relations, the classification of community relations and two paths of community change. Based on the above analysis framework, the paper then discusses the impact of spatial environment change on community development and makes theoretical and practical case analysis on spatial utility. Finally, the paper tries to suggest the reconstruction and maintenance of community under the new technology and space environment.

Abstract:This paper investigates the role of cultural amateur clubs of residents' community in the traditional neighborhood, and focuses on involving design in community activities to explore the new opportunities and possibilities of community regeneration. With the development of urbanization in China, traditional communities' environment has changed a lot. The mixture of new and old buildings not only broke the traditional residential environment integrity, but also changed the neighborhood relationship in communities. Under the macro-context of social background, understanding the existing problems and situation that residents who live in the modern communities may face when participating in daily cultural activities in the public space, has great practical significance in improving interpersonal relationship's situation, further promoting the development of the social harmonious. Using the Living Lab participatory design method and ethnographic study, we visited and interviewed the residents who live in Qinglong Hutong, Dongcheng District, Beijing, China. First of all, we describe the background, purpose and methods of this research, and then study the current situation of how the residents in Qinglong Community participate in the daily cultural activities. By identifying the persona, sampling investigating and researching on the residents, we create the model on social interaction and network establishment of the amateur cultural activities in the community. The final outcomes of this paper include participatory workshops on Beijing Opera, the applet based on the WeChat, and initiative on cultural regeneration during the Beijing Design Week. The model and sustainable mechanism developed in this paper will be used to support the further community regeneration project.
Neighborhood relations and the regeneration of social space in large suburban communities:A case study of Huilongguan in Beijing

Abstract:This article observes the social space established by relationships inside a certain zone via the exploration of neighborhood relationship,analyzes the territoriality and relationality of a community,and discusses the dialectical unification between social space and all other relationships.By random sampling and qualitative interview,the survey investigated the situation of neighborhood acquaintance dropping in,mutual assistance,conflict,and community identity perception.Huilongguan community represents a typical urban neighborhood,characterized by de-familiarization between neighbors and superficial human association.The TIES model constructed on these features and restricted the neighborhood relationship,consists of the factors of Time,Intention,Event,and Space.It is found that as a new community gradually expanding and developing,Huilongguan boasts relatively harmonious relationships and interactions between the residents and a strong community identity perception,which are very special and reflect the return of traditional community features.Through an analysis of the formation process of Huilongguan community,this study examines the establishment and maintaining mechanism of "a new community",which contains five steps based on time sequence.The creation of a real community needs a certain region and various mechanisms and events.The organic unity relationship between residents plays the dominant role.Space provides an indispensable foundation and the relationships meanwhile shape social space.When residents of a community actively participate in various community activities and fight for their rights,and regard the community as their joint homes,good relationships among neighbors and strong sense of community will be formed and the special mosaic social space structure will be produced.New communications technologies produce new community forms—people can cross community boundaries,even reach the global range to build social relations and social groups,which make global area become a large village

In the context of intellectual media, intelligent algorithm distribution solves the correlation between audience and content; VR/AR and other technologies provide technical support for the “sense of presence” of city image communication. Intelligent software creates the conditions for content production to be convenient and low standard. Abstract:Advances in media technologies allow people to restructure their relations across a broad range of time and space. As a result, modern communities are organized on local, national, and global bases. These communities are sustained and developed by media technologies their members adopt and characteristic media contents they consume. This article explores the relations between technology adoption, content consumption, and modern communities in Chinese television. The results indicate that the space-biased feature of television is enhanced by a combination of space-biased technologies and ritualized contents (i.e., drama and popular entertainment). Meanwhile, the over-emphasized space-biased feature is counterbalanced by a combination of time-biased technologies and instrumental contents (i.e., knowledge/information programs). Of more importance, the study supports three development trajectories of modern communities and media: (1) the larger scale the community has, the more the community relies on media to organize and coordinate; (2) the larger scale the community has, the less the community is tied to the traditional sources; and (3) the larger scale the community has, the less the community has shared cultural practices.

Abstract:This paper examines issues of digitality and materiality of new media, grounded in a study of online TV watching in China. Particularly, by looking at how people make choices and decisions regarding TV watching in everyday life, we highlight material and digital properties of new media TV, and how they support and condition actions and interactions around them. The study illustrates that materiality and digitality are complementary, instead of one substituting the other, and are highly intertwined in the hybrid media environment around which meaningful experiences are conditioned and produced. It also suggests that an analytic distinction between materiality and digitality is fruitful in unpacking the complex relations between media technologies and social experiences.

Abstract:The author argues that a few traditional media such as TV and film have possessed the new characteristics of the socialization due to the incessant development of the media technology and the social culture,which leads to the appearance of the new media such as internet.The main characteristics of them are as follows: the advantage of image,the rapid running of miscellaneous and massive information,and the extensive mutual impacts.The preceding characteristics take an important effect on the complanation and the fragmentation of life,the losing of the historical consciousness,the prevalence of the model of small-narration,the appearance of the consumptive culture and the new subjects.As a result,it objectively accelerates the appearance of a kind of the life sense and the currently named postmodern culture.According to the model of thoughts,we are able to imagine that the new media may obtain a special and massive power which not only produces a completely different dummy society,but also becomes the dominant erector of the dummy society in the complex development of the postmodern culture
