Inhibitory effect of extract from barley straw on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa

Abstract:In recent years,the blue algal blooms occurred in the main lakes of our country more and more often,especially the species of Microcystis aeruginosa.Mostly reported,the barley straw extract is harmless and effective to control the growth of many nuisance algae.In this study,the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa was heavily inhibited by unfiltered barley straw extract,with an inhibition ratio of 95% at all concentrations higher than 10mL·L-1 after 6 days,and the culture became clear water with no green color.But the barley straw extract lost its inhibitory effect after filtering through a 0.22μm filter.In the culture solution with unfiltered barley straw extract,many unknown protozoa were found suggesting that the protozoa may be one of the main causes for the inhibitory effect of barley straw extract.
