Abstract:In this essay, Mason Marshall argues that Plato's views on Forms play a central role in his educational philosophy. In response to what certain commentators have recently written, Marshall contends that this interpretation not only is accurate but also is advantageous because of how it can help philosophy of education. He also addresses the view, proposed by one philosopher of education, that Plato believes that the most valuable sort of knowledge cannot be fully expressed in words and that the objects of this knowledge are something other than transcendent Forms. Preferable to that view, Marshall argues, is the idea that Plato wants knowledge of Forms which is nonrepresentational.

Abstract:This paper utilises selective writings by John Dewey and Maurice Merleau-Ponty as the conceptual basis for considering how an enhanced synergistic focus on habit and embodiment could support practice gains in schools. The paper focuses on Dewey's belief that established habits can help students to incorporate experiences into evaluations of educational progress and Merleau-Ponty's spotlight on the body-subject, and how it provides a holistic way of conceiving relations that avoid over privileging abstraction and cognition and under-representing the centrality of the body in human experience. We then evaluate the role of language and reflection in relation to habit, embodiment, and education before discussing some of the general educational practice considerations which might improve the quality of students learning experiences. In conclusion, we consider the possibilities for Dewey's pragmatism to function as a theoretical bridge to Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of perception and the nature of experience. We argue that while it is important to recognise points of difference, in relation to philosophical treatments of habit and embodiment, it is also important to consider the overlap and new connections between Merleau-Ponty and Dewey which are valuable to take forward in contemporary education.

Abstract:In the last few years, the term "quality education" has entered thepopular educational lexicon as signifying a high degree of excellence. More often than not, the term is injected into discourse for polemical purposes, suggesting a determination to reject its putative opposite, "quantity education," or "saturation services." If one may take liberties with a formula of the Marxian dialectic, the expression constitutes a flat denial that there is a critical point whereat quantity is transformed into quality. It is a declaration that wholesale proliferation of educational plant, albeit designed along advanced architectural lines, and elegantly equipped with the most scientific laboratories, gymnasia, auditoriums, lunchrooms and libraries will not suffice to win the seal of quality education. Nor will staffing of these schools with professionally prepared and dedicated teachers, enlightened administrators, qualified specialists in guidance, librarianship, nursing, and the like alter the rating. The crucial element that must be compresent with these other factors is multi-racial or bi-racial composition of student body.

Abstract:One of R. S. Peters' interests was psychoanalysis. In this paper, I explore the relation between Peters' philosophy of moral education and his Freudian psychology. In section 2 of the paper, I introduce Peters' Freudian supplementation of the Piaget-Kohlberg model of moral development. To clarify the way in which Peters deals with two unresolved issues of this model, I examine, in section 3, his account of Freud's conceptions of mental health and illness, character and the emotions. In section 4, I bring to light the continuity between Freudian psychology and Peters' levels of life theory. In section 5, I employ this Freud-inspired anthropological theory to elucidate Peters' comprehensive analysis of the concept of education.

A sociohistorical examination of George Herbert Mead's approach to science education

Abstract:Although George Herbert Mead is widely known for his social psychological work, his views on science education also represent a significant, yet sometimes overlooked contribution. In a speech delivered in March 1906 entitled "The Teaching of Science in College," Mead calls for cultural courses on the sciences, such as sociology of science or history of science courses, to increase the relevancy of natural and physical science courses for high school and university students. These views reflect Mead's perspective on a number of traditional dualisms, including objectivity versus subjectivity and the social sciences versus natural and physical sciences. Taking a sociohistorical outlook, I identify the context behind Mead's approach to science education, which includes three major influences: (1) German intellectual thought and the Methodenstreit debate, (2) pragmatism and Darwin's theory of evolution, and (3) social reform efforts in Chicago and the General Science Movement.

Abstract:Within the rough ground that is the field of education there is a complex web of ethical obligations: to prepare our students for their future work; to be ethical as educators in our conduct and teaching; to the ethical principles embedded in the contexts in which we work; and given the Southern context of this work, the ethical obligations we have to this land and its First Peoples. We put out a call to colleagues whose work has been concerned with the pedagogies of professional ethics, the ethical burdens of institutional injustice, and the application of ethical theory to education's applied fields. In the responses we received it can be seen that ethical concerns in education are broad ranging, covering terrain varying from the preparation of preservice teachers, ethics in higher education, early childhood and care, educational leadership, relational and communicative ethics. Perhaps it could also be argued that this paper demonstrates Gibbon's observation that 'Assumptions about the particularity of this time as new and ripe with opportunity to make a difference through philosophy of education are not new and there's much to learn from the persistence of wanting to imagine that they are' (in Peters et al., 2020 Peters, M. Abstract:In this article, which is in criticism of a previous paper by Eric Blaire in this journal, I suggest that one's perspective of mathematics teaching is a logical consequence of one's epistemological commitment in relation to mathematical knowledge, and not merely one of expediency in response to societal pressures, or of pedagogical convenience. I suggest that from a consideration of the schools of thought in philosophy of mathematics, two distinct movements emerge. These are the Euclidean programme, an attempt to base mathematics on firm foundations, and the quasi‐empirical programme, the recognition that mathematics progresses heuristically, and through the re‐transmission of falsity. As a consequence, two teaching perspectives can be identified, knowledge‐centred and problem‐solving respectively. In describing these styles, I criticize the former and propose that the latter can initiate substantial changes and advances for school mathematics programmes.

Abstract:Abstract: The purpose of this study was to survey the historical development of the idealistic educational philosophy. Seven Idealistic educational philosophers were briefly reviewed in order to shed light on their influence on educational practices. Those eminent thinkers were Plato, Augustine, Descartes, Berkeley, Kant, Hegel, and Royce. As a classical philosophy, idealism was occasionally labeled as inflexible and traditional. A significant result of this study was that no philosophers agreed and settled on every single argument even though they all agreed on several fundamental principles. The researcher used a qualitative methodology for data collection and literature, research, research papers, books, journal articles as a method of documentation. Based on this review of seven idealistic philosophical perspectives, the researcher provided some recommendations, the most important of which was to conduct similar studies by including other idealistic philosophers, and studies that focus on their educational thought. Additionally, the researcher recommended develop learners’ thoughts and beliefs regarding the idealistic approaches, techniques, methods, and practices of teaching and learning such as dialectic, dialogue, and discussion.

Abstract:Ruyu HungNational Chiayi University, TaiwanThis is a collective writing experiment of PESA members, orchestrating the Philosophy of Education in a New Key regarding East Asia. In 2016 the pioneering article 'Towards a philosophy of academic publishing' (Peters et al., 2016) was published. It sheds a new light on collective writing that can make great contribution to the academia by creating 'new knowledge ecologies and the global ecosystem of scholarly communication'. By the experiment of collective writing, novel and interesting works are produced, including: 'Antipodean Theory for Educational Research' (Stewart et al., 2017), 'Ten theses on the shift from (Static) Text to (Moving) Image' (Peters et al., 2018a), 'Is Peer Review in Academic Publishing still working?' (Jackson et al., 2018), and 'Experimenting with academic subjectivity: collective writing, peer production and collective intelligence' (Peters et al., 2019). In the year of 2020, the project of the collective writing on the theme 'Philosophy of education in a new key' (Peters, 2020) was launched to explore possibilities of thinking philosophy of education through collective efforts and intelligence. Its leading tone 'Harmonic Cadence' (Peters, 2020) means that the new field for philosophy of education in the times of the post-truth world (Peters et al., 2018b) is open for more participation and partaking. 'The Philosophy of Education in a New Key: East Asia', the collectively written piece by East Asian scholars, aims to answer to the call of the 'Harmonic Cadence' by introducing East Asian sagacity.

Abstract:This article draws on a recent study of infant participation in research, and work in practice theory and professional education, to explore the implications and challenges of educational research of particular encounters, which we call “moments of wonder”. Working with Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of expression, we look closely at one such “moment,” as a rich field of sense—an excess of signification and affect. We see this account as demonstrating the value of what we call philosophical–empirical inquiry for opening up the complexity of educational research and practice, and specifically the interplay of early childhood education (ECE) practitioners/researchers and young children in “participatory research.”

Abstract:Today's educational system is in a quandary. On the one hand, colleges produce deep thinkers who possess skills necessary to adapt to an ever-changing world, but are less committed to the cause of resisting inequalities. On the other, there are students who have the passion for social reform, but are less concerned with higher order thinking skills. This investigation proposes a compromise by connecting the problem-posing method of Paolo Freire and the philosophy of education of John Dewey. This study uses the neo-pragmatic approach of Richard Rorty to open a space that seeks to overturn elitist school systems. It is argued that there is no necessary tension since critical pedagogy and liberal education are actually against institutional oppression and the authoritarian ways of elitist or dominant educational paradigms that emphasize the instrumental rather than the humanist purpose of learning. The right approach can be found in the belief that each person has a transcendental value. The freedom of every man makes manifest the vital role of liberal education in emancipating society from unjust and unequal systems through inclusivity and pluralism.

Abstract:"To center this discussion, I want to be clear about my spiral of action, reflection, and reaction or in popular education terms, the dynamic relationship between theory and practice, or praxis. For many years I focused my academic and activist life around critiques of consumer culture and advertising. For me, this cultural matrix and its voice-piece tore at the fabric of what I considered loving, sustainable, democratic, and just social relations. Up until this year, I was articulate yet fractured in this critique and was able to use my Masters to look for new directions. I began to focus on how consumerism connects with local and global political struggles for human rights and also on the construction and privileges of my perspective. This examination included many readings, but also educational workshops in media and cultural literacy and several creative projects. The mixture of this reflection and action has helped reconnect my interest in consumer culture and advertising in ways I never could have imagined or learned second-hand. Rather than just thinking my way into new ways of living, I've tried to design a Project that encouraged me to start living my way into new ways of thinking. Rather than using popular education pedagogy to change the way I study advertising, it has changed me. This new knowledge helps me validate the possibility for personal development and the hope for social transformation."--Page 1.

Abstract:Technology has been an important influence on the development of education. However, very little research in Educational Technology considers this history, and even less questions it. In this paper, we argue that our understanding of educational technology should be informed by the philosophy of technology – a field that has attempted to explore what these historical developments mean. This paper focuses on the ontological turn in philosophy and the technological thought of Marx and Heidegger. This is used to propose a foundation that can help researchers rethink educational technology, expanding research to account for human-education, human-technology and education-technology relations. It is proposed that human-education relationships should make students 'become what they are', highlighting their subjectivity rather than concentrating on information. Human-technology relationships can change the focus of design practice, so that technology is not merely seen as an efficient tool, but something 'handy' for peoples' educational needs. Education-technology relationships explain how technology can shape education, and re-introduces the idea of 'techne' as something to be valued in education.

Abstract:With the "practice turn" in contemporary humanities and social sciences , there is an ongoing debate arising from the field of philosophy of education , concerning whether teaching is a MacIntyrean practice. MacIntyre does not regard teaching as a practice for it is only a means of serving the variety of practices , while some philosophers of education claim that teaching is a practice for it is a relational activity with its intrinsic goods. In fact , teaching in the context of formal education can be regarded as a MacIntyrean practice in terms of the definitions and examples of practice illuminated by MacIntyre , involving the dialectical relationships among its intrinsic goods , institutions of school and teachers' virtues. Furthermore , this argument can justify the specific position of philosophy of education as a branch of philosophy.

Abstract:The concept of an educated man is a starting point of Richard S.Peters' philosophy of education.He not only takes it as the intrinsic end of education,but also uses it to define the basic function of cognitive criteria for the concept of education.For Peters,an educated man should have knowledge in certain depth and width as well as knowledge of the good.However,this concept is criticized by Richard Derr,John White and Jane Martin as primarily formal,transcendental and masculine and thus insufficient.Based on the analysis of the rationality of the criticism,the author argues that Peters' image of an educated man appears to be general,objective and transcendental,but it actually incorporates Peters' personally educational ideal as well as the mainstream values in Western society and culture.

Abstract:This critical paper posits that an ongoing reconceptualising of educational aims and values is necessary and desirable, especially so given the multiple complexities of current times and the associated need to reappraise the overarching pedagogical principles that inform contemporary education. We propose that phenomenology can yield incisive insights that can inform and shape students’ holistic learning experiences. We focus specifically on the contribution of Merleau-Ponty, as his work concentrates on an intersubjective interpretation of experience which constructively draws on a mix of self and shared, and cultural and environmental occurrences children share. We analyse the seldom explored content of Merleau-Ponty’s Sorbonne Lectures on Child Psychology and Pedagogy and discuss these in relation to embodiment and intersubjectivity; matters which we see as pivotal to the realisation of a more rounded and nuanced education of the mind and body. We then conduct a review of methodological and pedagogical insights which highlight how embodied and intersubjective aspirations could be taken forward in contemporary school education. We argue that if effective, more eventful and at times optimistic pedagogical episodes could support whole school attempts to recover and construct new and enlivening educational opportunities.

Abstract:Marx's theoretical purport seems to focus on the critique of political economics,but its ultimate purpose is the free and comprehensive development of human beings,and education is one of the most important means to achieve this goal.In the context of modern capitalism,Marx examined education,and on the basis of fully revealing the drawbacks of modernity and "human issues" in the modern society,he proposed the philosophy of education with comprehensive technical education as the main content.The purpose of this educational thought is to promote social progress,to stress the harmonious development and common progress of man and society,to emphasize education for the general public in combination with production and labor.Therefore,it transcends traditional educational thoughts in terms of problem domain of modern education,educational purposes,as well as man-society relations in education.It is a revolution in education,possessing important guiding significance for the macro practice of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and microscopic educational practices in contemporary China.Marx's "educational revolution" has been based on its philosophical revolution — practical materialism and historical materialism.

Abstract:The importance of collaboration between research and practice is increasingly acknowledged lately. In this paper, we assert the transformative power of the educators present in the research by highlighting the main principles of the two authentic educational philosophies that have highly influenced the world. Shulamit Imber, initially a history teacher, developed into one of the leading creators of the Holocaust education philosophy, contributing her practical experience and methods to give the past meaning and ‘humanize’ the teaching about Holocaust. Luigi Giussani, the man who wanted to bring the Christian experience in high school environment, considered that the primary concern for an educator is educating the human heart, which is one, regardless of cultures, habits and ways of expression. Basing our research on qualitative methods, i.e. the content analysis technique, we claim that a ‘true’ education embracing the human being goes beyond the border of its subject even if it preserves its singularity.
