Abstract:A review of studies of China's foreign policy reveals three dominant methods: the area studies approach, the IR theory method, and the integrated approach. We suggest that it is time to pay close attention to an emerging research program focusing on the study of Chinese international relations (IR) scholars, especially their internal debates, as a new venue to understand China's foreign policy. Although Chinese IR scholars are normally quoted as valuable sources in the study of Chinese foreign policy in general, there is no systematic study of China's IR scholars <i>per se</i>. In order to transform the study of Chinese IR scholars to a full-fledged research program, researchers need to pursue theoretical innovations on the relationship between different types of IR scholars and foreign policy inquiries, advance multi-method research designs across the different methods of field interviews, textual analysis, and opinion surveys, as well as encourage international collaboration between Chinese scholars and non-Chinese scholars.

Abstract:In recent years,more attention has been directed to problems in the studies of international relations in China,namely,separation of theory and practice,lack of originality in theory,methodology that lags behind,irregular academic criteria and weakness in academic criticism.As a result of reflections on these issues,the author suggests that being aware of these problems in our own studies will promote combination of international relation theories with practice and will be a means to ensure theoretical innovation.We should take advantage of our tradition in emphasizing history to enhance dialogue between theory and history,reinforce researches on methodology by adding to our store of knowledge skills of quantitative studies and improving our ability to conduct qualitative studies.Meanwhile,we should not neglect establishment of academic criteria to carry out academic criticism scientifically.

Abstract:The Chinese study of International issues faces a dual dilemma in the proposition of theory and policy.First,the formation of theory in Chinese studies of International Relations is still incomplete.Second,Chinese IR scholars also face what Stephen M.Walt,Joseph S.Nye,Jr.,and others call the challenge of "returning to policy".Ways to overcome these challenges include:promotion of empirical research;improvement of the intellectual and academic quality of policy study;revival and reconstruction of history's status in International Relations Theory;and focus on the nurturing of future decision-makers.

Abstract:International Relations studies in China are troubled by the lack of both creative theories and relevance to policy.In the symposium of 9 articles by Chinese IR scholars,symptoms found and prescriptions given vary.After making remarks on the other articles,this author argues that creative thinking and sensible policy advice can be generated by applying mid-level theories to Chinese realities.IR scholars should reach out to policy circles and the business community for a better understanding of the real world.In interacting with the media,however,scholars should be conscious of their independent identity and not be inflated by short-term popular needs.

Abstract:This paper offers a thorough review of the development of international studies in China over the past decade in terms of specific research areas and topics.The review covers both macro and micro issues,among which are hot issues like Marxist theories on international relations,theories of realism,studies of the international regime,constructivism school,discussions about international strategies,process of globalization,international economical politics,studies on the United Nations,nationalism,regionalism,feminism and so on.The paper also analyzes micro issues such as politics and culture,ecological politics,ethics in international relations,subdisciplines such as the British school and the Copenhagen school,and studies on sovereignty,security,benefits of the state,methodology and the Chinese characters as well.In fact,all the major issues and research topics discussed in the academic circle are included in this survey.The author not only provides a brief summary of the achievements in these research areas and the background of the researches,but also offers to comment on the existing problems and suggests diretions for future studies,with emphasis placed on the importance and hardships of this discipline in China today.

Abstract:Building foreign policy theories with Chinese characteristics has long been an aspiration of Chinese scholars, but has not resulted in much globally recognized achievements to date. This review essay begins with an overview of the obstacles to reaching this goal: confusion over the concept of theory, over-emphasis on policy prescription, confusion between the subject and object of study, restrictions on access to research materials, and lack of methodological diversity. To overcome these obstacles, we argue Chinese scholars should bring Chinese foreign policy studies (CFPS) into the larger field of comparative foreign policy analysis (FPA), and take advantage of FPA’s rich arsenal of methodological tools and theoretical lenses to conduct insightful and rigorous analysis and theory building. Such an effort will not only facilitate the construction of foreign policy theory with Chinese characteristics but also contribute Chinese wisdom to FPA theory building, making it a truly global field of study.

Abstract:This essay critically reviews Chinese scholars' recent studies of China's policymaking. For many years, this field of study was, for the most part, pursued only by Western scholars. During the past ten years, however, Chinese scholarship in this field has emerged. The increased attention of Chinese scholars to this area of study has enhanced understanding of Chinese policymaking, policy reorientation, and the relationship between policy and finance. However, the current Chinese scholarship has some limitations.

Abstract:This article is a review of the status of China international relations studies,asserting that beneath the apparent flourishing of this field is a weakness of this discipline featuring the loss of balance in the context of pluralism,the progressive ideology and fading of sense of skepticism,the absence of the spirit of taking science as the cause,etc.It also discusses the negative impact of traditional thinking,and advocates that a critical discussion of the present situation be initiated on a massive scale so that this new enquiry will see further development.

Abstract:The end of the Cold War has ushered in an unprecedented opportunity for the revival of the study of diplomacy. China's rise has brought diplomacy to the forefront of China's domestic political agenda. The situation of diplomatic studies in China reflects changes in external factors that have had an impact on China,and bears obvious characteristics of the times. While diplomacy has become a central issue in China,diplomatic studies face some immediate problems,such as the vagueness of the object of study,and the confusion of diplomatic studies with International Relations and Foreign Policy. It is imperative to free the study of diplomacy from the power-centered influence of International Relations,and to sort out the connections and differences it has with the studies of International Relations and Foreign Policy. After clarifying the "object of study"and its system,short-term progress can be made in such areas of research as diplomatic history,diplomatic theory,contemporary forms and practice of diplomacy,and regional and country-specific diplomatic studies.

Abstract:Urban sprawl is a world phenomenon which has drawn the scholars' attention in China.This article starts with reviewing the definitions,characteristics, measurements,mechanisms and strategies of urban sprawl at home and abroad. Then,it attempts to give comprehensive assessments on the above works.Results show that:①existing researches in China mainly focused on the descriptive analysis, and lack of quantitative analysis;②studies in the West are diverse,but are so scattered that need to be integrated;③cities in China and in the western countries have many differences in many aspects,so Chinese studies about urban sprawl must consider the actual situation of our country;④domestic evaluations always used some indices to measure the effects of policies but couldn't combine it with GIS graphs ideally,therefore,it is needed to utilize western methods as a reference to rich our studies.

Abstract:This paper presents a review of Western scholars' studies on China's public policy process.Interests in China's policy process began in 1950s.Studies on China's public policy led by American scholars initially conceptualized around policy elites and factions but later shifted towards bureaucratic organizations.Different policy process models were proposed,such as rationalist behavior,power struggles,bargaining game and etc.Characteristics of China's public policy process were identified.While many of these studies were somewhat biased,they offer some interesting perspectives that China's policy researchers will find useful in their efforts to gain a better understanding of China's public policy process.

Abstract:The study of East Asian foreign policies has progressed in sync with mainstream international relations (IR) theories: (1) from perhaps an inadvertent or unconscious coincidence with realism during the Cold War to consciously using different theoretical tools to study the various aspects of East Asian foreign policies; and (2) from the dominance of realism to a diversity of theories in studying East Asian foreign policies. Nonetheless, the old issues from the Cold War have not been resolved; the Korean Peninsula and the Taiwan Strait remain two flashpoints in the region, with new twists that can derail regional stability and prosperity. New issues also have emerged and made East Asia most volatile. One issue is concerned with restructuring the balance of power in East Asia, particularly the dynamics among the major players, i.e. Japan, China, and the United States. Regionalism is another new topic in the study of East Asian foreign policies. A review of the current state of the field suggests that two complementary issues be given priority in the future. First, the foreign policy interests and strategies of individual small states vis-à-vis great powers in the region, particularly those in Southeast Asia and the Korean peninsula. Second, what could really elevate the study of East Asian foreign policies in the general field of IR and foreign policy analysis is to continue exploring innovative analytical frameworks that can expand the boundaries of existing metatheories and paradigms.

Abstract:Since the 21st century, the total number of China's educational research in international publications has been continuously increased.But in the overall vision of global education research, it is still just a small field. Local scholars have become more and more involved in the international publication of China's educational research, however,they have not yet formed an academic center with important international status. There is discrepancy among the influence of different fields of China's educational research: the researches of empirical cross-disciplinary are stronger while the studies based on cultural background are weaker.In non-interdisciplinary education research, quantitative and qualitative research paradigms each count half of the number; the core topics of research focus on teacher education, learning psychology, language learning, curriculum reform, education policy research, etc; most of the analytical frameworks stem from western theories, contributing less to the international knowledge system. The understanding of Chineseheritage culture in international China's educational research is too general and abstract, lacking historical dimensions, and is easy to fall into the concept of Binary Opposition. To enhance the influence of China's educational research in international publication, it is necessary to correct the current emphasis on the number of international publications in the evaluation system, and establish a more reasonable one to guide academic research to a development mode of intensive cultivation. Local scholars urgently need to change their status of "academic processing" in international cooperation, enhance their ability to reflecting on western academic discourse and their understanding of China's local educational experience, and consolidate educational practice and cultural identity into theoretical knowledge.
