Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the application of CAD/CAM technique in reconstruction of mandible defect.METHODS:Before surgery, three-dimensional computed tomography was performed in 23 patients with mandible lesions, then the CT data were transformed into a readable format to produce facsimile models by using rapid prototyping (RP) techniques. When individual mandibular models were produced, evaluation and surgical simulation were performed on the model, which included measuring range of mandible lesions, prefabrication of mandibular reconstructive titanium plates or distractors, ascertaining precise position of transport disk, and shaping the free vascularized fibula, etc. According to the simulation, the mandible reconstruction was accomplished in operation.RESULTS:The surgical simulation on the model produced by CAD/CAM technique highly resembled the real operation. The measurements of the lesion on the model were completely correspondent with those found in operation, and the prefabricated plates and distractor fitted the contour of the mandible. The operation time shortened and the results were satisfactory. The post-operation X-ray showed that the mandible was symmetrical and the maxillofacial contour maintained.CONCLUSIONS:CAD/CAM technique was very helpful for simulation of anatomically complicated mandible defect. By preoperative simulation of the mandible and lesions, surgeons are able to improve or refine surgical planning so that better results can be assured.

Abstract:Objective Computational simulation technology has become an indispensable tool for researchers across the biomechanics discipline.Crucial to the effectiveness of such a tool is its ability to efficiently simulate patient-specific problems.This paper will present a unique and exceptionally efficient approach that converts 3D digital images(provided typically by CT,Ultrasound or MRI scanners)directly into highly accurate computational models.Method The majority of approaches adopted have involved generating a surface model(either in a discretized or continuous format)from the scan data,which is then exported to a commercial mesher-a process which is time consuming,not very robust and virtually intractable for the complex topologies typical of image data.A more‘direct approach’is to combine the geometric detection and mesh creation stages in one process.This approach involves identifying volumes of interest(segmentation of 3D image)and then directly generating the volumetric mesh based on an orthotropic grid intersected by interfaces defining the boundaries.This methodology is used that generates 3D hexahedral or tetrahedral elements throughout the volume of the domain,thus creating the mesh directly.Results Treating the problem using an image-based meshing approach is remarkably straightforward,robust,accurate and efficient.Indeed meshes can be generated automatically which is of image-based accuracy with domain boundaries of the finite element model lying exactly on the iso-surfaces thereby taking into account partial volume effects and providing sub-voxel accuracy.Conclusion Meshing from image data presents a number of challenges but also unique opportunities so that a conceptually different approach can provide,in many instances,better results thantraditional approaches.The ease and accuracy with which models can be generated opens up a wide range of previously difficult or intractable problems to numerical analysis,including blood flow,and patient-specific implant design.

Abstract:Objective: To construct a geometric skull model by using three-dimensional reconstruction, computer tomography scanning and rapid prototyping technology and evaluate its significance in treatment of complex oral and maxillofacial deformities. Methods: A cranial and a goldenhar syndrome patient with complex oral and maxillofacial deformities bone received continuous volumetric scanning of skull and the data acquisition was done by an electron computed tomography, by which reconstruction was performed and the obtained images saved as STL files. Then the data were input into rapid prototyping machine to make three-dimensional geometric model. Direct measurement, designation and surgery simulation could be done on this three-dimensional model. Then the mandibular mirror physical model was manufactured using rapid prototyping according to the normal side. Results: A computer-aided model according to CT data could represent the three-dimensional anatomic structures and their relationships precisely. The replica exhibited dimensional errors ranging 0.02 mm to 0.53 mm. Which provided strong basis for accurate understanding of disease status and reasonable surgical plans and helped improve the curative effect of surgery. Conclusion: Rapid prototyping can help surgeons in many ways for therapy of the complex oral and maxillofacial deformities.

Abstract:PURPOSE: We describe state-of-the-art software and hardware requirements for the manufacture of high quality medical models manufactured using medical rapid prototyping. The limitations of medical models, the source of artefacts, and their physical appearance are illustrated along with remedies for their removal.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical models were built using predominantly stereolithography and fused deposition modeling at both institutions over a period of 6 years. A combined total of 350 models have been produced for a range of maxillofacial, neurosurgical, and orthopedic applications. Stereolithography, fused deposition modeling, computerized numerical milling, and other technologies are described along with computer software requirements.RESULTS: A range of unwanted artefacts that create distortions on medical models have been identified. These include data import, computed tomography gantry distortion, metal, motion, surface roughness due to support structure removal or surface modeling, and image data thresholding. The source of the artefact has been related to the patient, imaging modality performance, or the modeling technology. Discussion as to the significance of the artefacts on clinical use is provided.CONCLUSIONS: It is recommended that models of human anatomy generated by medical rapid prototyping are subject to rigorous quality assurance at all stages of the manufacturing process. Clinicians should be aware of potential areas for inaccuracies within models and review the source images in cases where model integrity is in doubt.

Abstract:Since 1989, three-dimensional (3D) printing has developed rapidly in biomedical engineering because it is individually customizable. By printing medical products at clinics, this powerful tool can be used by doctors, which will enhance the response to surgery and increase the creative freedom of surgeons. In this article, we reviewed the progress of 3D printing in biomedicine with particular emphasis on the types of 3D printing methods that are most suitable for the clinical application, and proposed the concept of Printing@clinic. The four levels of Printing@clinic are discussed, from surgical implants to direct printing during surgery. Three major applications of Printing@clinic, which could be rapidly implemented in the clinical setting, are fabricating prosthesis to assist with surgeries, printing 3D implantable scaffolds, and bioprinting for tissue repair. We believe that Printing@clinic will be an attractive service in the decades to come.

Abstract:Conventional methods for diagnosis and operation planning based on 2D image are still widely used in oral and maxillofacial prostheses surgery, and the accuracy and efficiency are needed to improve eagerly. Aiming at this problem, rapid prototyping (RP), a technique of advanced manufacturing, is applied to fabricate the physical model of bone, and which is used to simulate the operation further. The procedure of RP based precise surgery is presented, and some key techniques including CT image processing, 3D bone model reconstruction, repairing model design, physical model fabrication, pre-operation simulation are discussed in detail. Total 25 successful clinical applications illustrate that, with RP based precise surgery methodology, the efficiency and quality of oral and maxillofacial prostheses can be improved effectively.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a form of technology in which 3D physical models are created. It has been used in a variety of surgical specialities ranging from cranio-maxillo-facial to orthopaedic surgery and is currently an area of much interest within the medical profession. Within the field of orthopaedic surgery, 3D printing has several clinical applications including surgical education, surgical planning, manufacture of patient-specific prostheses/patient specific instruments and bone tissue engineering. This article reviews the current practices of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery in both clinical and pre-clinical settings along with discussing its potential future applications.

Abstract:Computer aided design models in the form of 3-dimensional visual computer models or in the form of actual physical prototypes has aided surgeons in the reconstructive surgical procedure although in only qualitative terms. The goal of this research is to harness the full power of modern computer imaging technologies for quantitative control of craniofacial reconstructive procedures. This research has addressed: 1) a science and technology based approach to the construction of BioCAD models from patient specific anatomical images; 2) the application of such models to craniofacial surgical planning using computer aided design technology, and 3) the marriage of BioCAD models and/or prototypes with commercially available surgical image guidance systems in the operating room. This scheme presented here can be incorporated within any hospital environment.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging system has gained popularity worldwide in clinical application. Unlike computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, it has the ability to capture 3D images with both shape and texture information. This feature has made it quite useful for plastic surgeons. This review article is mainly focusing on demonstrating the current status and analyzing the future of the application of 3D surface imaging systems in plastic and reconstructive surgery.Currently, 3D surface imaging system is mainly used in plastic and reconstructive surgery to help improve the reliability of surgical planning and assessing surgical outcome objectively. There have already been reports of its using on plastic and reconstructive surgery from head to toe. Studies on facial aging process, online applications development, and so on, have also been done through the use of 3D surface imaging system.Because different types of 3D surface imaging devices have their own advantages and disadvantages, a basic knowledge of their features is required and careful thought should be taken to choose the one that best fits a surgeon's demand.In the future, by integrating with other imaging tools and the 3D printing technology, 3D surface imaging system will play an important role in individualized surgical planning, implants production, meticulous surgical simulation, operative techniques training, and patient education.

Abstract:3D printing technology, also known as rapid prototyping technology, is an emerging production and manufacturing method. Medical researchers can create various medical devices for patients' bodies with greater accuracy by converting 3D digital graphics from computer-aided design into physical entities and printing 3D objects layer by layer. Thriving as medicine is, 3D printing, being a widely used and promising technology, will make significant contributions to the progress of biomedical science in multiple directions. The fundamental principle of this technology is akin to building blocks, where small parts are assembled into a comprehensive structure, utilizing materials such as plastic, metal, ceramics, etc. In the production of medical equipment under traditional manufacturing methods, a significant amount of manual debugging is sometimes necessary, which often results in the waste of considerable time and resources. Nonetheless, the manufacturing technique of 3D printing can rapidly and precisely create intricate instruments, as well as produce implants or tissue models. The main focus of this article is to analyze recent progress, applications and restriction prospects of 3D printing in medical applications. Abstract:PurposeVirtual digital resources and printed models have become indispensable tools for medical training and surgical planning. Nevertheless, printed models of soft tissue organs are still challenging to reproduce. This study adopts open source packages and a low-cost desktop 3D printer to convert multiple modalities of medical images to digital resources (volume rendering images and digital models) and lifelike printed models, which are useful to enhance our understanding of the geometric structure and complex spatial nature of anatomical organs.Materials and methodsNeuroimaging technologies such as CT, CTA, MRI, and TOF-MRA collect serial medical images. The procedures for producing digital resources can be divided into volume rendering and medical image reconstruction. To verify the accuracy of reconstruction, this study presents qualitative and quantitative assessments. Subsequently, digital models are archived as stereolithography format files and imported to the bundled software of the 3D printer. The printed models are produced using polylactide filament materials.ResultsWe have successfully converted multiple modalities of medical images to digital resources and printed models for both hard organs (cranial base and tooth) and soft tissue organs (brain, blood vessels of the brain, the heart chambers and vessel lumen, and pituitary tumor). Multiple digital resources and printed models were provided to illustrate the anatomical relationship between organs and complicated surrounding structures. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a powerful tool to produce lifelike and tangible models.ConclusionsWe present an available and cost-effective method for producing both digital resources and printed models. The choice of modality in medical images and the processing approach is important when reproducing soft tissue organs models. The accuracy of the printed model is determined by the quality of organ models and 3DP. With the ongoing improvement of printing techniques and the variety of materials available, 3DP will become an indispensable tool in medical training and surgical planning.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the application value of computer aided rapid prototyping 3D solid model in jaw fracture.Methods 46 cases of maxillofacial fractures,23 cases which were treated with simple 3D reconstruction of CT scan were control group.In the study group,the other 23 cases were diagnosed by rapid prototyping 3D solid model.Then,the coincidence rate of diagnosis and the cur-ative effect after surgery between the two groups were compared respectively.Results The diagnosis consistent rate of the 3D solid model group was 95.7% which was significantly higher than that of simple 3D reconstruction group(χ2 =6.788,P=0.030).And the curative effect of the study group was better than the control group.Conclusion Rapid prototyping three-dimensional solid model can aid the diagnosis of mandibular fracture.Itimproves the safety of surgery and the success rate which enhances the curative effect.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to review recent innovations on the process and application of 3-dimensional (3D) printed objects from medical imaging data. Data for 3D printed medical models can be obtained from computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound using the Data Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) software. The data images are processed using segmentation and mesh generation tools and converted to a standard tessellation language (STL) file for printing. 3D printing technologies include stereolithography, selective laser sintering, inkjet, and fused-deposition modeling . 3D printed models have been used for preoperative planning of complex surgeries, the creation of custom prosthesis, and in the education and training of physicians. The application of medical imaging and 3D printers has been successful in providing solutions to many complex medical problems. As technology advances, its applications continue to grow in the future.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing (3DP) is a rapid prototyping technology that has gained increasing recognition in many different fields. Inherent accuracy and low-cost property enable applicability of 3DP in many areas, such as manufacturing, aerospace, medical, and industrial design. Recently, 3DP has gained considerable attention in the medical field. The image data can be quickly turned into physical objects by using 3DP technology. These objects are being used across a variety of surgical specialties. The shortage of cadaver specimens is a major problem in medical education. However, this concern has been solved with the emergence of 3DP model. Custom-made items can be produced by using 3DP technology. This innovation allows 3DP use in preoperative planning and surgical training. Learning is difficult among medical students because of the complex anatomical structures of the liver. Thus, 3D visualization is a useful tool in anatomy teaching and hepatic surgical training. However, conventional models do not capture haptic qualities. 3DP can produce highly accurate and complex physical models. Many types of human or animal differentiated cells can be printed successfully with the development of 3D bio-printing technology. This progress represents a valuable breakthrough that exhibits many potential uses, such as research on drug metabolism or liver disease mechanism. This technology can also be used to solve shortage of organs for transplant in the future.

Abstract:AIM: To introduce the basic theories and procedures of rapid prototyping, an advanced manufacture technique, and its application for craniomaxillofacial surgery and tissue engineering. METHODS: Thirty-one patients were selected from the Department of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College between December 1998 and February 2005. Electron beam computed tomography EBCT scanner was employed to scan patients` heads and faces in series and thin layers. Data of EBCT were input in workstation from digital inlet, then to three-dimensional reconstruction with method of surface shadow. After final data to be transformed to the files, which rapid prototyping machine can identify, the data were input laser rapid prototyping machine. Three-dimensional bionic cranium models were fabricated by machine in layer-by-layer manufacturing principle. The scaffold of tissue engineering also can be fabricated by same procedure with controlled porous architecture, configuration, and shape. RESULTS: ①Accurate three-dimensional gauging, clinical diagnosis, simulate surgeries and prefabrication of individual prosthesis for bone defect were performed in thirty one patients with craniomaxillofacial anomalies by using the three-dimensional bionic models, which made surgeries simple and accurate. ② The macro pore dimension was about 400 μm in size. The high-magnified image shows that there was a micro porous structure around the macro pores. The average micro pore dimension is about 5μm. The average porosity of the scaffold was 80%. CONCLUSION: Bionic models have become a very useful and important tools for modern craniomaxillofacial surgery. Scaffold of tissue engineering by rapid prototyping is bioactive material, and it is new research direction to tissue engineering.
Pictorial review current and future applications of 3 D printing in congenital cardiology and cardiac surgery

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in congenital cardiology and cardiac surgery has experienced a rapid development over the last decade. In presence of complex cardiac and extra-cardiac anatomies, the creation of a physical, patient-specific model is attractive to most clinicians. However, at the present time, there is still a lack of strong scientific evidence of the benefit of 3D models in clinical practice and only qualitative evaluation of the models has been used to investigate their clinical use. 3D models can be printed in rigid or flexible materials, and the original size can be augmented depending on the application the models are needed for. The most common applications of 3D models at present include procedural planning of complex surgical or interventional cases, in vitro simulation for research purposes, training and communication with patients and families. The aim of this pictorial review is to describe the basic principles of this technology and present its current and future applications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To exploit the three-dimensional model technique and apply it in the oral and maxillofacial surgery.METHODS:Using CT and rapid prototype technique to make three-dimentional model and used it for the therapy of the comminuted zygomatic features, jaw bone asymmetry, defects after tumor removal, and implantations.RESULTS:By using three-dimensional models eight patients with comprehensive bone defects had good results.CONCLUSIONS:Three-dimensional models can help surgeons in many ways for the therapy of the oral and maxillofacial deformities.

The main aim of this project is to minimise the time and cost for the design and manufacturing of the prosthesis. Getting the DICOM file from the MRI or CT scan which gives the body part dimensions (or) views of the body part in different directions . AUTODESK MESHMIXER and 3D SLICER software’s are used to extract and design the 3D prosthetic body part in this project, flexible Biomaterial is gone to be used for the flexibility in the respiration process. There are a lot uses of 3D printing technology in surgery, pharmaceutical industry, disease modelling, development of customized implants and prostheses, organ printing, vet medicine and tissue engineering applications have been explained and this new method compared with traditional methods that used in the biomedical field. Abstract:Three-dimensional printing technology has been used for more than three decades in many industries, including the automotive and aerospace industries. So far, the use of this technology in medicine has been limited only to 3D printing of anatomical models for educational and training purposes, which is due to the insufficient functional properties of the materials used in the process. Only recent advances in the development of innovative materials have resulted in the flourishing of the use of 3D printing in medicine and pharmacy. Currently, additive manufacturing technology is widely used in clinical fields. Rapid development can be observed in the design of implants and prostheses, the creation of biomedical models tailored to the needs of the patient and the bioprinting of tissues and living scaffolds for regenerative medicine. The purpose of this review is to characterize the most popular 3D printing techniques.

With this system, surgical plan design based on virtual model and model operation simulation based on physical model can be realized, and ideal surgical treatment strategy can be acquired, and this strategy can be operated accurately in clinic with help of surgical aid tools. Total 22 successful clinical applications illustrate that, with sugary plan design system based on digital design and manufacturing techniques, the efficiency and quality of maxillofacial surgery can be improved effectively.
