Abstract:The major limitation of soil application of sewage sludge compost is the total heavy metal contents and their bioavailability to the soil-plant system. However, it is widely accepted that the determination of total elements does not give an accurate estimation of the potential environmental impact. So it is necessary to apply sequential extraction techniques to obtain suitable information about their bioavailability or toxicity. A sequential extraction scheme according to the Sposito's guidelines was applied to sludge samples collected from sewage sludge compost at different steps of treatment. Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn were determined in the sludge compost extracts by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), Cr and As were determined by absorption spectrometry. In relation to our country and current international legislation for the use of sludge for agricultural purposes, none of the heavy metal concentrations exceeded maximum permitted levels. Furthermore, it was observed that a large proportion of the heavy metals were associated to the residual fraction and bound to organic matter, which was considered some inert forms. Bioavailable fractions of all elements tended to decrease except Cd.
