Data Center Network Placement and Service Protection in All-Optical Mesh Networks

Abstract:Cloud services based on data center networks (DCNs) require a transmission infrastructure with high-capacity, low-latency, low-cost and high-availability, which can be offered by survivable optical networks. DCN placement is a fundamental issue in supporting cloud services in optical networks. It concerns not only the cost of providing cloud services, but also the service availability against failures via proper service replicas. In this paper, we jointly optimize DCN placement with service routing and protection to minimize the network cost, while ensuring fast protection of all services against a single link or server failure. An ILP (Integer Linear Program) is formulated to achieve optimal joint design. It integrates p-cycle (preconfigured protection cycle) for fast protection against a single link failure, and DCN replicas and fast service rerouting against a server failure. To make the design more scalable, a two-step heuristic is proposed for large-size networks. The first step separately solves the DCN placement and service routing problem in the failure-free scenario, and the second step takes fast service protection into account. The proposed design is validated by extensive simulation studies.
An Efficient Resource Sharing Scheme For Double-Link Failures In Optical Mesh Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new resource sharing scheme for double-link failures in survivable optical mesh networks. With 100% protection guarantee, our proposed scheme can accommodate reasonable contention for sharing resources and minimize backup capacity for reservation. Simulation results show that this sharing scheme can achieve satisfied performance in terms of resource utilization ratio and blocking probability.

Abstract:In this paper, a new architecture of optical networks-the server view based on optical networks is considered. New ILP formulations are proposed to analyze the network capacity with Network survivablity under the two types of node servers. Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of these new formulations. The study has shown that the network can achieve the same throughput under the two types of node servers and the network throughput increases when the maximum allowed variation increases.

Abstract:As the size and the complexity of optical mesh networks grow, double-link failures become more probable. To protect against double-link failures, we generally have to provision more backup resources with respect to single-link failures. To improve the resource efficiency, it is important to reduce backup resources used for surviving double-link failures. In this paper, we investigate some representative sharing schemes and propose an enhanced resource sharing scheme with resource contention resolution for double-link failures in survivable optical mesh networks. By fully taking into account the temporal and spatial factors, our scheme can accommodate reasonable contention for sharing resources and minimize backup resources for reservation with 100% protection guarantee. Simulation results show that this enhanced resource sharing scheme can achieve satisfactory performance in terms of resource utilization ratio and blocking probability.

Abstract:At present,the topology of optical network becomes more and more complicated and is going to be the mesh structure.A new design of intelligent real-time monitoring and protection of mesh optical network is put forward in this article. In this new design,the monitoring and protection system is composed of the bottom level of embedded monitoring devices and the top level of network management center.The function of computing the protection fiber route is added to the embedded monitoring and protection device.The device figures out the backup fiber routes of each working fiber in advance, and switches to the backup fiber route in time while the working fiber fails.In the new design,a kind of real unattended intelligent realtime monitoring and protection device of optical network comes true,and it meets the requirement of the development of mesh optical network.The transparent uninterrupted communication of mesh optical network is achieved.

Abstract:This paper focuses on random multi-link failures protection in optical mesh networks, instead of single, the dual or sequential failures of previous studies. Spare resource efficiency and failure robustness are major concerns in link protection strategy designing and a k-regular and k-edge connected structure is proved to be one of the optimal solutions for link protection network. Based on this, a novel pre-configured polyhedron based protection structure is proposed, and it could provide protection for both simultaneous and sequential random link failures with improved spare resource efficiency. Its performance is evaluated in terms of spare resource consumption, recovery rate and average recovery path length, as well as compared with ring based and subgraph protection under probabilistic link failure scenarios. Results show the proposed novel link protection approach has better performance than previous works. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In order to tackle the security and privacy problems in optical networks, a novel mesh-based optical security network exploiting double masking (DM) scheme for multipoint confidential communication is proposed and studied theoretically. For each node in the network, a pair of mutually asynchronous vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are required as transceivers, and the delay fiber (DF) is used to set different time delays as network node markers. In this security network, the encryption of the message is implemented on the transmitter of the source node by using the DM scheme, and the encrypted message is transmitted to the receiver of the destination node through the optical network for decryption. Each network node can output its individual chaotic signals separately with different time delay markers. By regulating different internal parameter mismatches, the synchronization characteristics of transceivers in a security network are numerically analyzed by using the cross correlation coefficient. Simulation results show that the chaos synchronization between transceivers enjoys fantastic robustness to mismatched parameters. Meanwhile, the tolerance of the DM scheme to the inherent parameter mismatch is excellent, so it is suitable for constructing secure networks in optical networks. Besides, based on the high quality synchronization with a correlation coefficient of 0.983, the communication performances of the longest path channel are investigated for a given metropolitan area network scale. Two pieces of 10 Gb/s messages can be effectively concealed in the chaos and decoded gratifyingly behind 100 km transmission, and the system has reliable security to resist illegal attacks. Finally, the network performance simulation is conducted for diverse configurations of the mesh-based optical networks. All the results confirmed the chaotic encryption scheme provides a novel way for any two legitimate nodes to establish security keys in optical networks.
Modeling and experimental evaluation of inter-layer coordination for multilayer survivable networks

Abstract:With increasing network transmission capacities,a single fiber failure may lead to disastrous data losses.In multilayer networks,single layer transmission methods will lead to confused situations in both layers without an interlayer coordination mechanism,which will hurt survivability.This study analyzes the survivability scheme of IP over wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) networks and introduces an extended topology with network resources in both the top and bottom layers.An efficient inter-layer coordination scheme is given for multilayer survivable networks with the performance evaluated for data transfer with a simulated failure on a two-layer network testbed.The results show that the coordination mechanism achieves better data transfer security when failures occur and enhances the network survivability.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a multicast-enabled survivable architecture for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks. By manipulating the sinusoidal control clock and the wavelength of the light source for each downstream wavelength channel at the optical line terminal, different optical subcarriers are generated to provide subscribers with not only multicast data transmission but also survivability against fiber failure in either distribution or feeder fibers. The simultaneous transmissions of 10-Gb/s unicast data and 10-Gb/s multicast data under normal working mode, as well as the 10-Gb/s transmissions for unicast data under protection mode, are experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:The design of the intelligent all-optical protection scheme based on the physical layer of the mesh optical network is introduced.This scheme obeys the principle of 1+1 protection method which is based on the "dual fed selective receiving" mode.The scheme consists of hardware design and software design.A new type of intelligent real-time monitoring and protecting device and an algorithm of automatic establishment of the protecting light path are designed.The algorithm runs within the device and enables the device to establish a protecting light path in the protection fiber network for each corresponding working light path in advance.The real-time optical power of the working light paths is monitored by the device.Once the fault of the working light path occurs,the device will switch to the corresponding protecting light path immediately.The algorithm is assumed to be implemented in a 12-node mesh optical network,and the simulation result is given.By using the proposed protection scheme,the transparent uninterrupted communication of mesh optical network can be achievable in the way of the all-optical protection.

Abstract:With the development of optical transmission technology, optical fiber networks have become critical infrastructures in supporting information transmission on the Internet. However, the fiber cable is very vulnerable to large-scale damage such as earthquakes or pulse bombs. What is more serious is that it will take a long time to locate and repair the damages on fiber links. The long-term repair process will cause continuous network performance degradation and severe economic loss. The fact is that these dangerous areas may be ignored by traditional vulnerability analysis models. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a method to analyze the vulnerability of fiber networks based on network recoverability. We first improve the traditional fiber network simulation methods and damage simulation methods to provide a compatible foundation for the network recoverability simulation. Then, we present the network vulnerability analysis model: the Damage Measurement and Location Model (DMLM). The model employs the heuristic traversal algorithm based on random points to locate the candidate attack positions. We design three vulnerability metrics: two metrics are related to network recoverability and one metric is used for comparison. We also build their corresponding theoretical frameworks to determine the appropriate model parameters to satisfy the specified estimation error requirements. Numerical results prove the proposed model’s effectiveness and excellent sensitivity for essential parameters. The visual results of the vulnerable zones prove the necessity of considering network recoverability in vulnerability analysis of optical fiber networks.

Abstract:High-capacity communication networks are built to provide high throughput and low latency to accommodate the growing demand for bandwidth. However, the provision of these features is subject to a robust underlying network, which can provide high capacity with maximum reliability in terms of the system's connection availability. This work optimizes an existing 2D spectral–spatial optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) passive optical network (PON) to maximize connection availability while maintaining desirable communication capacity and capital expenditure. Optimization is performed by employing ring topology at the feeder level, which is used to provide a redundant path in case of connection failures. Furthermore, high transmission capacity is ensured by utilizing a pseudo-3D double-weight zero cross-correlation (DW-ZCC) code. The analysis is performed with Optisystem simulations to observe the performance of the system in terms of bit error rate (BER), received power, and eye openings. It is observed that the introduction of ring topology at the feeder level of the PON does not impact the overall transmission capacity of the system. The system can still support maximum transmission capacity at receiver sensitivities of up to −19 dB. Reliability analysis also shows that the optimized ring-based architecture can provide desirable connection availability compared to the existing system.

Abstract:With the rapid development of space division multiplexing (SDM) and flexible grid technology, the problem of resource allocation in optical network becomes much more complicated. Although there emerge a substantial number of works about link protection or restoration in SDM-EONs mesh networks, the topic of survivability is dug deeper in this work. It is acknowledged that protection schemes based on ring covers bring the advantages of shorter restoration time and lower costs. However, the RSCA problem in SDM-EON for link protection based on ring covers has rarely been investigated. To enhance the survivability of SDM-EON and make the best use of ring covers, we initially select a set of rings for the protection of all the links in a network topology according to constrains, aiming at taking full advantages of network resources. After that, we propose an algorithm to recover the traffic which will break off under link failures, basing on the set of rings. At the end of this protection scheme, we arrange the resources fulfilling the constrains of spectrum contiguity and core continuity constrains by using several different algorithms considering physical impairment. Based on the allocation in both spacial and spectral dimensions, our algorithms achieve better results of survivability. According to the simulations conducted for the evaluation of the proposed algorithms, our algorithms manage to recover at least 72.8% of traffic when the traffic request number is set to be 1000.

Abstract:The incremental design algorithms that make un2-connected networks develop toward survivable topology are investigated,and a strategy called SBPP-TA which provides shared backup path on augmented topology is proposed.Through formulating Integer Linear Programming(ILP) model and simulation,numerical results show that,SBPP-TA improves the network survivability with little extra resources added into the network.
Fast optical layer mesh protection using pre-cross-connected trails

Abstract:Conventional optical networks are based on SONET rings, but since rings are known to use bandwidth inefficiently, there has been much research into shared mesh protection, which promises significant bandwidth savings. Unfortunately, most shared mesh protection schemes cannot guarantee that failed traffic will be restored within the 50 ms timeframe that SONET standards specify. A notable exception is the p-cycle scheme of Grover and Stamatelakis. We argue, however, that p-cycles have certain limitations, e.g., there is no easy way to adapt p-cycles to a path-based protection scheme, and p-cycles seem more suited to static traffic than to dynamic traffic. In this paper we show that the key to fast restoration times is not a ring-like topology per se, but rather the ability to pre-cross-connect protection paths. This leads to the concept of a pre-cross-connected trail or PXT, which is a structure that is more flexible than rings and that adapts readily to both path-based and link-based schemes and to both static and dynamic traffic. The PXT protection scheme achieves fast restoration speeds, and our simulations, which have been carefully chosen using ideas from experimental design theory, show that the bandwidth efficiency of the PXT protection scheme is comparable to that of conventional shared mesh protection schemes.

Abstract:This study proposes and presents a new central office (CO) for the optical metro access network (OMAN) with an affordable and distinctive switching system. The CO's foundation is built upon a novel optical multicarrier (OMC) generation technique. This technique provides numerous frequency carriers that are characterized by a high tone-to-noise ratio (TNR) of 40 dB and minimal amplitude excursions. The purpose is to accommodate multiple users at the optical network unit side in the optical metropolitan area network (OMAN). The OMC generation is achieved through a cascaded configuration involving a single phase and two Mach Zehnder modulators without incorporating optical or electrical amplifiers or filters. The proposed OMC is installed in the CO of the OMAN to support the 1.2 Tbps downlink and 600 Gbps uplink transmission, with practical bit error rate (BER) ranges from 10−3 to 10−13 for the downlink and 10−6 to 10−14 for the uplink transmission. Furthermore, in the OMAN's context, optical fiber failure is a main issue. Therefore, we have proposed a possible solution for ensuring uninterrupted communication without any disturbance in various scenarios of main optical fiber failures. This demonstrates how this novel CO can rapidly recover transmission failures through robust switching a and centralized OLT. The proposed system is intended to provide users with a reliable and affordable service while maintaining high-quality transmission rates.
